I’d heard of this case before, several times, but no one begins the tale with the victim, her personality, her life. Everyone starts with the poisoning and what came after. Thanks for painting such a vivid picture of Peggy as a person. What was done to her was just horrific.

"Smart" is actually not defined properly in American system. American system just evaluates vocabulary and a miniscule set of drab computational skills. When you look at eastern cultures, smart is a compilation of not just academic smartness but also application, innovation, emotional intelligence, social inteeligence, ethical intelligence, abstract thinking, big picture thinking, cross linking various aspects of life and occupations, personal responsibility, sensibility to different cultures, awareness of various perspectives, resourcefulness etc etc etc. I mean there are entire books on just each one of these subjects. In the grand scheme of things she was probs smarter than all of those people who are basically just good test takers.

Thalium was used in an assassination attempt by the South African security police under Apartheid in 1982. They detained Eastern Cape student activist Siphiwo Mthimkhulu and poisoned him, knowing that the effects of the poison would manifest later when he was no longer in custody thus allowing the security police deniability. Luckily he was rushed to a good hospital in Cape Town where a neurologist was able to diagnose him in time. He proceeded to sue the minister of Police which was a great embarrassment to the apartheid state. This ultimately led to his direct 'elimination' by the security police.

been following him for over a year now. I truly admire the human being and family man he is. my father being a Vietnam vet and Marine, cop, mayor just finally retiring the other day at 74. I admire him taking up the post he did as a seal. by chance falling into becoming a content creator and not only that but starting a non-profit for all the stories he's told. constantly being on top of putting out content with his family and wife for our enjoyment. Not even knowing that sometimes it's the best part of the day for us, just something nice to get us through. I just got to say I'm really thankful John, always wishing the best to you and yours and the people you speak about and all who listen. thank you!

I've never heard this version of the story. I heard the coke was left on the front porch and one of the family member took it inside once seeing it sitting there. I never heard that he broke into their home and placed the coke in the pantry. Also they showed where the bottle tops were removed and only could be seen that the tops were removed from looking at them under a microscope which showed tiny scrape marks...George had painstakingly pried each top off and then used his bottle capper to put them back on. I think the wife knew, but they couldn't prove it. I think this story was on 60 minutes.

The killer in this case has to be simultaneously one of the smartest and dumbest criminals in history. On one hand, he used a very potent and uncommon poison with vague symptoms that make it difficult to identify. On the other hand, he cooked up a "fictional" scenario that bore an uncanny resemblance to his crime, distributed it to dozens of people, and bragged about his knowledge of poisons to an unusually curious stranger who turned out to be an undercover cop.
