  • I've handled plenty of antique Japanese edged weapons but this one really stood out despite having an unexceptional blade.

That mountain and the trees look really detailed. Wish I could've seen what it looked like before it aged.

Underneath the tsukamaki are the 2 menuki one either side. They are meant to fill the 2 small hollows inside the gripping hands.
This blade needs a polish and after exposing the 'landscape' (keshiki) or activities of the blade it's impossible to return it to Samurai mounts hence the honiki shirasaya (white scabbard) which keeps the newly exposed steel free of contact with any dirt inside the old saya.
You would get an exact honiki wood copy of the blade made and mount the koshirae (sword furniture) on that and display the two together.
The laquered saya is very nice and probably the most desirable item in this rig unless the new polish were to expose something beautiful.

I promise I don't mean to be a know it all jerk, just imagine you hearing this with a kind and objective tone lol. I am well versed in nihonto (authentic Japanese blades). There is nothing unique about this sword or its mounts. In fact the tuba (guard) is very lackluster. The menuki are not matching. The saya is a bit unique but in rough shape and missing the blade that slides in to it. There, now I am the big meany .

That's okay LOL. I mean the actual scene and motif though. I am not an expert at all but have seen a lot of antique blades from Japan and this is the only one like this I've run across.
