  • Join us for breakfast in Malaysia as we eat roti in Kuala Lumpur. With plans to visit KL Bird Park we woke up early to find breakfast in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia hoping to eat at one of our favorite spots in the city. Unfortunately, that place was closed but we did find another spot nearby specializing in serving various kinds of roti for breakfast. We ended up ordering cheese roti and milo roti along with Bombay Toast and to drink we had mango juice, teh tarik and hot milo. It was a feast of feasts and certainly the big breakfast we needed to do a busy day of sightseeing afterwards.

Breakfast in Malaysia | Eating Roti in Kuala Lumpur Travel Food Video Transcript:
Well good morning from Kuala Lumpur. It is actually a really nice morning. It is not hot out and it is overcast so this is very pleasant. So today this morning we wanted to make a breakfast video but the place we came to is closed for some reason they haven't opened today. So we are looking for a backup that will be equally good where we can show you some of our favorite dishes. So yeah, we're on a bit of a hunt right now and hopefully we'll find something really good soon.
Alright, so we finally found a place for breakfast. Woo hoo! Yeah.
So we found a place called Restoran Annexe and it is found on Nasi Kandar and yeah it is on the way. We're heading over to KL Bird Park this morning.
And we just saw it and we're like yeah let's go try it out. And they specialize kind of in at least in the morning they specialize in Roti. Roti and prata. Yeah, so we've ordered a whole bunch of those. We've ordered like three and we've got a couple of drinks coming so yeah breakfast is on its way.
Alright guys so the drinks are here. Sam went for his classic Teh Tarik and I got myself a Mango juice.
    Tea time for Samuel.
I burnt myself just touching your cup earlier. Like that stuff is pipping hot.
Yeah. And you would think in somewhere like as hot and humid as Kuala Lumpur I wouldn't be having hot tea but early in the morning I still. I still crave my hot teas and coffees.
It has got very milky, it is sugary.
    Oh, roti cheese. Bombay toast.
Okay so we have to admit the breakfast menu was a little bit limited this morning.
So we couldn't order that much stuff to show you. But we did manage to get Bombay Toast and just by looking at it it kind of looks like a French Toast. Except that instead of being served with like syrup or you know Maple Syrup or whatever you're used to you get a dal. Your lentil curry sauce whatever. And something else. So let's take this for a swim. Yeah, it looks pretty good. It looks like it does look fluffy like a piece of French Toast.
We're getting used to eating curries for breakfast so yeah. This is how we roll here in Malaysia.
So next up we're going for the cheese roti or cheese prata. They use the name interchangeably. Yeah and they've uh they've given us a really big portion here. Yeah, I know. Like it is not just one layer there is like seems to be a bottom layer as well.
I'm seeing a lot of cheese. Like sometimes when you order this they just put like one measly slice and they're like that is it. Here is your cheese roti.
I think that is the best cheese roti I've had. Yeah? And we've been eating this in Singapore and also here in KL.
So that is a wrap for breakfast here in Kuala Lumpur.
As I should be. In terms of price point that came to 18.70 Ringgit which is $4.15 and that was for four drinks and three mains. So yeah, that was a super cheap breakfast. Filling. Now we're ready to go explore.
And you know what? We should also mention before we finish up. Oh yeah. There isn't just one typical Malaysian breakfast. Because you have so many different cultures here. There is like different meals that you can get for breakfast. There is Malay, Chinese, Indian food. Yeah. In fact, we saw someone at the Central Market selling little triangle shaped Nasi Lemak. Which is wrapped in a banana leaf and yeah that looked tempting as well too.
So you can get noodles, you can get rice, you can get roti. There is plenty of variety. And that is what makes it awesome here. Yeah. Alright, off to go sightseeing. Tata. Ciao.
This is part of our Travel in Malaysia video series showcasing Malaysian food, Malaysian culture and Malaysian cuisine.

Wow, your story about the friendly Malaysians paying for your breakfast is SO COOL. I have never been to Malaysia, but I used to work in Indonesia, and I also know Singapore well. I love that part of the world. Your story brought a tear to my eye, and made me think, next time I see foreigners in America (where I'm from) or in my current home (Brazil), I'm going to pay it forward, and pick up some checks. It's an anonymous gesture that binds us all together in a global community. Congrats again for your videos.

I had a similar thing happen in Ipoh. A lovely man who we chatted to paid for mine and my partners dinner but he scooted off on his motorbike before we finished eating, so I didn't know he had done this till we went to pay. The meal was also one of the best Indian meals i've ever had so it's a memory that will stick around in my heart.

It's really interesting to see different people's reaction to food's that I'm familiar with. In Singapore and Malaysia , we typically pronounce Milo as My-Low

Roti is so good! I bought one in the freezer section of a mart and just cooked it. But freshly cooked Roti sounds more delicious. :)) We pronounce Milo as My-lo and its pretty much like Ovaltine/Ovomaltine, a Chocolate Malt drink that is so good! I sometimes eat the powder as is or add a couple of drops of water to make it a paste and eat it as is or spread it on toast. So addicting and so good. :)

Ive always associated french toast as a bread dipped in egg and eaten with chilly sauce and mayonnaise. But yeah, a culture is to pay breakfast for friends because street food is cheap, roti maybe for rm1. ++ and a drink for rm2-3. So its around rm4-5 per pax. And thats why we sometimes have a courtesy to pay for curiuos foreigners.

To those who want less sweet taste for their hot drink (Tea Tarik or Hot Tea with Milk) or any kind of fruit juice, remind the waiter "Less Sweet" or in Malay "Kurang Manis." (Kurang = Less. Manis = Sweet). The is a local cafe across the street of KLCC next to Public Bank Building for Local Malaysia Breakfast. KLCC Mall on the 4th Floor also serve local Malaysian Breakfast.

You two are so adorable! Thanks for taking us around the world with you. I've watched several of your videos and think that they are improving all the time. For example, I like how this video has more close-up images of the foods you ate. You've also described in more detail how they tasted. The kitty at the end was the icing on the cake. However, if you don't mind a suggestion from a viewer, I think the back-to-back shots of you tasting the same dish were a bit repetitive. If you wanted to show both of your reactions to the same dish, I think having both of you in the same frame eating it at the same time would be more interesting. Otherwise, I think a shot of Audrey eating her dish and another of Sam eating his would be good. Anyway, I'll continue to watch your videos even if you think I should shove my suggestion where the sun don't shine. ;-) Happy travel.

In Malaysia you have to ask whether fruit juice you order is fresh or from the box... and tell them whether you want sugar added in the fresh juice.
The default setting for fresh juice is with water, ice and sugar.
You have to say if you dont want water, ice or sugar.

That clock monument at 00:19 is on Medan Pasar, was built in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of King George VI. It's one of the few Art Deco structures in K.L. The others are buildings, e.g. Oriental Building, ex-Wisma Ekran, OCBC building - all in the vicinity of the clock.

Samuel, this is not happening. I know you left Malaysia a few months ago and Google seemed to algorithmically felt that I have to watch more of you. This becomes more apparent after my late work and on the sofa before midnight. Anyway, back to your roti, my wife and daughter totally digs roti cheese. I don't, yet as I believe cheese and dough sacrilegiously belongs to a margherita pizza. Nonetheless, one day at a mamak in a suburb of Kepong that we stumbled upon for the first time, I made an exception. Because when my daughter ordered her supper of it, I was perplexed why when she broke the roti cheese, the melted cheese stretched white and long....I ordered mine and then interviewed the mamak guy. He said they use mozarella cheese balls instead (not one but two in it). I was woaaaa now THAT'S A CHEESE ROTI! That is is called an exception.
On roti Milo. For fun I ordered it together with a glass of cucumber juice. Cos I asked the dude what's the juice on your menu board that no ones order. Okay, here is the raw deal: Milo roti and cucumber juice does not match. Don't do it. There is a difference between being food adventure and bad fusion.

Malaysians and visiting tourists as well, tend to get the pronunciation for MILO confused.. This is because the english and malay language tends to be mixed togerher when ordering food. In malay it is pronounced as MeeLo and english it is MyLo.
On another lighter note, you are litterally "corrupting" our standard format of eating roti canai and toast with your adventurous tastebuds.
I once went to a McDonalds with a fellow local lady. In addition to the main meal I ordered apple pies for both of us. She took her apple pie and dipped it in chilli sauce and ate. I found it rather strange. Well, I suppose people have strange ways of enjoying their food.
