Great performance is even more awesome!!! AIC is top 2 or 3 for me. They had the perfect mix of metal and grungy blues. Down toned guitar and the best voice to go with the sound
Everybody stop bitching about laynes guitar playing. If you watch any live video where layne is playing guitar, you can obviously tell that he's a little less comfortable then when he's just singing, and yes, I always found the way he strums to be a a little strange as well. Like somebody else said on here, layne had just picked up guitar not long before this period of time, so even when he was playing guitar with mad season a couple years later, he still doesn't look to comfortable playing and singing live and he's obviously focusing much more. He spends a lot of the time watching the fret board. But that's only because he wasn't as experienced with the guitar. He had been drumming and singing for years and years before he picked up the guitar, so no shit he's not going to be as comfortable with it or play it with the same ease that he sang with. Layne was a fucking amazing singer, with an amazing voice, a unique voice, but he wasn't an amazing and unique guitar player just because he could sing amazingly, he was an average player who was a very good song writer , so stop holding him to this high standard and giving him shit just because he wasn't shredding the guitar up there, that's not what music is about.
They realised Hate to Feel was going to be nearly impossible to play live, because the harmony is what drives the lick for the verses. It sounds boring without it, and it would be incredibly, embarrassingly apparent if it wasn't there live. Its not a terribly difficult part to play, so what they obviously did was teach the part to Layne, and he played it only on tour. Layne never claimed or hyped himself up to be a guitar wizard, and quite frankly, it's a small miracle he was even able to play as well as he did, if all they did was stick a guitar in his hand go "play these notes," after they recorded the album and realised they needed a rhythm guitarist live. Its not something you just pick up, and he played perfectly in time with Jerry, all why harmonizing and belting vocals... dude was actually pretty fn talented, and singing was his main gig (which he excelled at in spades). Anyone taking a crack at a highly revered (and not to mention DEAD) musician for not being super great at an instrument that isnt actually his role in the band is ignorant at best (not you, OC, just riding your posts coattails), monstrously retarded and insensitive at worst. Congrats on passing the medical diagnosis test for gross incompetence if you're anyone who came here to shit on Layne's guitar playing.
Please cease from criticizing Layne's guitar skills. The majority of his talent was in singing and writing lyrics, but bottom line....he loved anything to do with music (such as guitar - get the hint)? I think that it is great and healthy that as low as his self-esteem was he was brave enough to not only learn the guitar but to play it in front of the audience ("Hate To Feel" and "Angry Chair"). For those who criticize Layne's guitar playing I ask you this: Are you a true fan of Layne as a person and would you have the courage to do a new skill in front of thousands - especially when standing next to Jerry?
@@alexandretheodoro2414 exactly my friend! people can judge and criticize all they want, but let’s see those critics get on stage and do the same! Much love from Finland my friend!
And I'm just going to say this, anybody that knows anything about Alice in chains knows that Layne would always encourage Jerry to sing and Jerry would always encourage Layne to play the guitar... Because even though Layne was lead vocals often, he can play the guitar.... And even though Jerry was lead guitar.. his ass can sing.
I have been playing guitar for like 4 years and in no way am i in a position to say much. But Layne had just started playing, and even after a tiny bit of experience he could play and sing. Impressive, i cant even do that yet with my 4 years.
I think it was Jerry who said in a interview that Layne had only then learned to play the guitar, so he was already in his later 20s when he started. But he added that Layne practiced often and was becoming really good. Layne said Tom Morello taught him guitar (/watch?v=Emt_WlEqlfU). Layne was a drummer before he was ever a singer (for Sleaze?) he did kick ass in drums, later in singing, so he would have kicked ass in guitar for sure sure xD as when he did something he really gave it all he got.
He actually wrote some great songs for Mad Season. Its sad he passed on. I can't even imagine what kind of music hed be making if he was still alive today.
Plus for those of us other troglodytes who also came to play later in life, we have a great place to start with the songs he wrote that we already know and enjoy.
@@MortSubitegoddamnit yeah apparently he was recording home demos for a solo album, but not sure how true that is. It’s just sad that we gotta imagine what he could’ve accomplished with all that talent, just hope he’s at peace wherever he ended up.
I don't see a point in complaining about his technique or skills on guitar. The song sounds fucking amazing that's all that matters. They have Jerry for the lead stuff.
53 here been listening to AIC for over 20 years! Now I'm i.to reading the lyrics and understanding their meaning. They are the best band and they have so been a part of my life and got me through some hard times.
4:00. He plays just fine. For the ppl complaining.. I bet most of you don’t even know how to play & how hard it is not to miss or mute chords. I can’t play for 10 minutes without my fingers hurting.
Yeah just trying to learn guitar is hard I mean it’s achieving for example Layne Staley can sing and play at the same time for example I can’t do that so yeah he’s good

@moreoreos123 i know lol i can hear them both. i definitely hear where your coming from but seriously never use "not a hard song to play" as a reason why a guitarist isnt great. because there arent too many of jerrys riffs that are insanely difficutl but hes still one of the best guitarist in my books. layne wrote this one angry chair and head creeps which to me are all fantastic songs. very creepy and brooding. if they were wanked up on guitar theyd sound alot worse IMO. just a thought
Shut up he doesn't strums wrong the problem is the height of the guitar and its weight... Like Layne said, "Shut Up! I got the floor"...

yes Dirt was a great album...and Facelift was amazing

Mort Subite Layne wrote the music to this song all by himself including the guitar parts. They didn't need to teach him this because he wrote it.
Layne had fucking massive hands,

Exactly his guitar playing is good
@Ben Wade yeah unfortunately
The pain and tremble in his voice at 3:34 is so haunting but incredible. Makes you wonder about all the horrors his eyes and mind saw
