The end probably the most listened to mandolin lick of all time.
Ray Jackson of Lindisfarne played the mandolin, but as Stewart didn’t want to pay him any royalties,on the back of the album where musicians are listed,Rays name was replaced by just putting mandolin player.not a nice thing to do.
@isg01010.....That is no lie and I think I'm far enough along to start working on learning to play it now.
Bless you! I thought only I fell in love with that part of the song. My dad bless his soul tried to play one for 30 years or so. Peace from Northern Michigan
Outside of bluegrass.
@@Biden4more That would be correct! 👍
Maggie is a grown woman and he is a school kid (in the story) who falls for the older woman, as any kid usually will, but she just wanted to have fun with a young boy. So he's broken hearted. (This actually happened to a friend of mine back then, in '71). Rod was the singer of the band "Faces", whose lead guitarist was Ronnie Wood, who now plays with Keith Richards and is one of the Stones. He is playing the mandolin at the end (the tinkly instrument; he also plays another instrument associated with country music, like the mandolin, and that is the pedal steel guitar, which he plays on The Girl With the Far Away Eyes).
I can't believe you guys haven't heard this song. I heard it over a thousand times and it never gets old. This is true music.
that is what I was thinking lol -
This song came out after I’d gone to Vietnam, returned to finishing college, and quite frankly had profound effect while trying to prioritize my life. It’s all good…phew. 🙏
"Maggie May" was the #1 song of the year 1971.
I remember it well!
Sorry fellas, I was 5. I love the song, but my recollection of 1971 is shady at best lol.
A song about a cougar before that was even a "thing". This has been my favorite of his for decades.
I still love this song. It reminds me of my best years in high school. It takes me back to a very nostalgic time. I could never put it into words, but there's just something about it. Those who are fans of this song and this time, understand.
Love Maggie May!!
Oh my God, Rod burst onto the scene with this song when I was 16. We had never heard anything like it and I get such great memories every time I hear Maggie May. Can you imagine being 16 and this sort of stuff was happening all the time! Great days.
No, he didn't "burst" onto the scene. Rod had previously been lead singer for Jeff Beck Group and Faces, both successful. Though he is solo here, he is actually backed by his Faces bandnates.
Same. I have been a fan since this song came out.
@@denroy3Right! In 1968 Rod was singing with Jeff Beck. Love their song, “I Ain’t Superstitious” from the Jeff Bec “Truth” album. Great song if one wants to here the playing that made Beck famous, along with some early Rod Stewart.
I saw Rod and The Faces in 1974 at The Apollo in Glasgow (Scotland). Rod was born in London to Scottish parents and he has always considered himself to be Scottish, which we love. It was an epic gig. The crowd sang every word of Maggie May with him and we brought the house down at the end of it. His band at the time, The Faces, was really tight and great to listen to - Ronnie Wood, now of the Rolling Stones, played lead guitar. If you want to hear more of the same, You Wear It Well and Stay With Me are classics. His post-Faces split stuff was commercially successful but never reached the same heights as The Faces period for me.
I'm half Scottish on my dad's side. My dad's mate is a celtic fan like Rod. And was once on a cruise that rod was on. My dad's mate is a big drinker. He can put back 10+ pints comfortably. And he got talking to Rod in the bar about football. Rod Drank him under the table...carried him back to his cabin. Then went back to the bar and carried on drinking 🤣. That man can drink !
@@billdoor3140 No doubt about that. I was walking away in a crowd of fans after a Scotland game at Hamden (we won) when a limo stopped in traffic beside us. The back window rolled down and there was Rod and his mates knocking back the brandy, then having a laugh with us until the traffic moved on. Top man and fellow Celt.
It's just "Faces" by the way, there is no "The" in their name, shortened from the original groups 'Small Faces', because Rod was taller than Steve Marriot, haha.
Rod Stewart the medieval minstrel wandering from village to village singing his stories to the common folk while playing the mandolin.
Maggie May was my mantra
Still played on FM radio to this day, yeah this song from 1970 is that good!
Being in high school in the 70's this song was my first intro to Rod steward, along with "Piano man" by Billy Jolel, and "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John.
Maggie May is based on one of Rod's true life stories.
I believe he was about 16 at the time.
@@cheripetty1805 I believe you are both right.
It's about an older woman he lost his virginity to in 1961!
You need to check out his, FOREVER YOUNG"! Its a sweet. sweet song that you will want to sing to you kids.!
Popular request thus far!
"Young Turks" is a great song and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" is the first Rod Stewart song I ever heard on the radio. I was young and had no idea what it was about! 🤣
Rod sings, “The First Cut is The Deepest”. You must hear it.
I love Rod Stewart !!! From the beginning until now ! ♥♥♥
the instrument is a Mandolin
Someone back in the sixties described Stewart's voice as the sounding like "the morning after a night of too much bourbon and cigarettes".
his catalog is ever changing, sexual, heartfelt, loving, kindness, evoluving.....What an outstanding performer for more than 50 years strong Keep going!!
Soooooo many greats!! ❤😊Rod Stewart is a legend, for sure. “You’re in my Heart” “I Don’t Want to Talk About it” “Forever Young”
Love Rod Stewart.
1971 was the year. I had just gotten married and we were traveling to Louisiana from Georgia for my husbands job. We heard this song on the radio and it was the first time I had heard it and really liked it. Heard it a lot after that. Hard to believe y'all have never really listened to him. He is one of the best. So glad you like him!!
Isn’t it amazing how music can transport us to a specific time and place…gotta love it❤
Sorry Karen, in 1971 I was 5. I love the song, but my recollection of 1971 is shady at best lol.
What can you say about Rod Stewart?......... he's a freaking legend! ✌️
Rod is Pop, Rock, Disco, Jazz, had duets, ect. A truly versatile talent spanning the decades.
Don't discount the contribution to the earliest framework for what would become Heavy Metal wirh his first big gig as frontman on The Jeff Beck Group's first two albums
the instrument at the end is a mandolin, which is typically a bluegrass instrument
Any of his performances from live at the Albert hall are peak Rod Stewart. He’s a different animal with an audience… you won’t be disappointed ❤
Sam is so so cute
I think that my physics teacher was Maggie, from what she said. My parents loved to dance to Rod. Therefore I love him.
Rod Stewart is the best storyteller vocalist of all time. His whole catalogue is outstanding. Met him once in the 80's and he was a true gentleman.
At one point I heard him called the Crown Prince of Rock and Roll. Maggie May was not his biggest but is my own personal favourite. He had a huge number hits. This was just his first one.
Rod sings with Jeff Beck on the Curtis Mayfield classic, “People Get Ready”.
That song put Rod on the way to greatness!!! 🌈🕊️🆙🕊️🌈 are you rapture ready???
Hi Guys the instrument to start this and the end is a Mandolin . Pretty cool sounding instrument . This was the 1971 release that set Rod on his Journey . His unmistakeable vocals . This was a massive hit for him and the band they were called The Faces . Glad to see you have discovered Rod he is still recording today . Thanks John
You're right, mandolin is played at the end, but the beginning (after the classical guitar intro) is a 12-string guitar.
@@xchiro1818 Know it all! JK
Rockin Rod. He became more internationally known when he joined legendary guitarist “Jeff Beck Band” in around 1968ish with future “Rolling Stones” guitarist Ron Wood , then Rod & Ron Wood joined the band “Faces “ after 2 albums with Jeff . Deep catalog of great music
It’s a mandolin. Not something you hear a lot of in rock, but essential to this song. I always thought this song had a Welsh/Scottish sound and feel to it. I especially love the 2 guitar solos. I was captured the first time I heard it in 1971 and I love it as much now as I did then. ❤
😂Yes 'the ladies took advantage of Rod"
That's The Stones Ronnie Wood on Bass
Great reaction guys! This is off the Every Picture Tells a Story LP that came out in 1971. I'm pretty sure that this LP and song put Rod and the band Faces in the public eye. Every song on it is great but one of my favorites is Mandolin WInd. I think you would enjoy it also.
Mike, one of my favourite albums of all time! Rod has one of the great rock/blues voices of all time.
@@johnwaga3702 I understand. Bought the LP after hearing Maggie May on the radio. Played that LP until I wore grooves into it!
My fav too is Mandolin Wind. Just sew him in concert again last night in Lisbon. lost count of the amount of times I have seen him in concert. First time was in 83 Earls court London.. Guessing Last night was the Last... but I hope not
Faces (Small) were in the public eye with a guy named Steve Mariott well before Rod came on board.
You're pretty wrong. While Faces members are playing his backing band, this was Rid going "solo". Faces was a well known group before hand...and Rod was also known as the lead singer of 'Jeff Beck Group' before that, another successful endeavor that actually made him.
Long John Ba
Baldry was a famous English folk singer around the days they Beatles were first famous. Long John was very popular on BBC TV and one day he spotted a young kid playing harmonica at a train station and singing. That Young man became Rod Stewart and later Long John heard a young piano player who went on to become Elton John. So, Baldry started the careers of Rod Stewart and Elton John, two legendary performers in the Rock Industry in England and later the world. Both these future start played in Long John's band known as the Steam Packet. That is little known history.
Yeah I really dig Rod Stewart and this is a big favorite of mine!!!
One of the best and most perfect songs ever recorded!... and yeah thats a mandolin.... early british rockers were influenced by classic english folk music, mandolins turn up often in early British rock
Ron wood sounds so good on the guitar in the song he went to the rolling Stones after this. Rod Stewart is a legend Great reaction guys rock on
And don't forget his wonderful bass work in the same song too.I will look at Ron Wood in a new light after this.Never knew he played bass till now.
@@michaelporter8053 multi-talented musician
This has rapidly become my favourite reaction channel, not just because Sam is so beautiful, no, I couldn't put my finger on it before but, Phil is so articulate, and then I find out he is English, and that explains it all...
Great reaction! You can't go wrong with Rod, but a suggestion from me, would be: "The First Cut is the Deepest".
Yup, Rod does a great cover on that song, written and first sung by Cat Stevens when he was a teenager!
This hit song was the song that made Rod famous
It's a mandolin, played by Ray Jackson of the band Lindisfarne, who just happened to be in the studios and improvised the piece to fill out a flat repetitive outro. He was paid the princely sum of £15, Musicians' Union session rate. Despite the song going on to be No.1 in both the UK and US he didn't get a penny more. Tight sod Rod.
Well ,he was Scottish.
A Cleveland DJ Mitch Michaels played Maggie May the B-Side to Reason To Believe and the phone lines burned up
"Hot Legs" Is a must guys. You will love it.
Only Rod could make a mandolin cool
... and John Paul Jones.
Give a listen to Led Zeppelin's
Going to California live from Earl's Court.
And bagpipes
R.E.M. says what’s wrong with “Losing My Religion” that it’s not cool?
A ton of people make the mandolin cool.
Mandolins have always been most cool even when they weren't considered "cool."
We had *thee* best music back then.
Try "Forever Young", the official video. Any song by Sir Rod is worth a listen, he is a legend.
If the ladies are taking advantage of Rod imagine the rest of us!!! hahaha :D
The lady of the song was well known at the time and she handled the exposure like the class act she was🎉
On the radio 20 times a day for years. Part of summer living too. No internet, only three tv channels and RADIO music! Life was simple and fun as heck.
Hard to believe you didn't know about this monster hit of Rod's. Not only is he a rocker from the 60s, but he is still going and his live concerts are fantastic. So many hits, so many women, he is late 70s now and still performing live and on records.
Not everybody is an old fart of the Rod Stewart era. How many songs from the 30s can you even name ?
Handbags and the Gladrags, another surprise in Sir Rod's vast repertoire
It's sad that the young generation will never truly experience some of the great artists but it's great that some them keep an open mind enjoy music I grew up on
From the '71 album "Every Picture Tells A Story". (Had it on 8-track. : ) That whole album is good.
Every Picture Tells A Story is a masterpiece.
I was 16 yrs old when this came out & LOVED it!! It was 1976. Co-written by Rod & Martin Quintenton. Just brilliant!! 🥰🥰🥰
Maggie May came out in 1971.
I always loved Maggie May. It was No 1 in Nov 1971 the week I was born.
I do believe that was a mandolin. Great song. I had forgotten how good RS is. I had this album and just about wore it out. Nice reaction.
Stay with me is the ultimate party rockroll song!!
Rod Stewart ~ unique, fun, humor
I'd like you to hear "(I know) I'm Losing You" by Rod ...raspy voice rocking out. It's a cover of a Temptations song.
That stringed instrument was a mandolin, and if you would like to hear more of it, you should react to Rod Stewart's song Mandolin Wind.
Rod Stewart and the faces a great old band. One of my top songs is That's All You Need - UA-cam. Not all like it but i do. Thanks both.
the classic "morning after the night before" story........"Maggie May" was quite the cougar.......the "unknown instrument" you talked about was a mandolin......
Mandolin is a bluegrass standard instrument, but Rod makes fine use of it here. Great reaction!
Yes! Thank you!
This was Rod’s first solo hit, prior to this he was the front man the band The Faces ( a great band) before that it was the Guitarist Jeff Beck who gave him a jump start to his career in the Jeff Beck Group back in the late 60’s.
If you liked Maggie may ,you might enjoy forever young, the video I think is the best one
One of the best songs and recordings of the 70s.
Oh and it’s a mandolin.
Love "Forever Young".
FYI, Rod live is a treat!
'You Wear it Well 'another one for the ladies.
Rod Stewart and the Faces were one kick ass band. Rods solo albums just as good ..true Rockers !
For the catalog. At the end of the 70s, Rod released a live double album (Absolutly Live). It hit like a bomb back then. Listen to it first and then do some more research. And never forget "Live". He's even better live than in the studio. Have fun.🎵🎼💖☮
I really enjoy your reactions notably how you do a bit of research before you listen. Totally blind first listens can be fun, but sometimes a bit of foreknowledge can make a huge difference in one's perception or understanding. Also your analysis of instrumentation is amazing.😀 I've been a fan of Rod since the 70s and he released a new album in 2021- amazing! I'll recommend "Forever Young" if you sample some more. Thanks for inviting us along your musical discovery.
Thank you, appreciate the acknowledgment! We were doing a lot of blind reactions when we began but we felt like we missed the scope of some of the songs or artists. We try to mix it up now without spoiling the surprises! Kind of like when you know you’re getting a birthday gift but not opening it until your actual born day! 😂

This MUST be followed by "Stay with me"
It was a mandolin at the end! Great song and reaction! He is a legend.
all respect to you 2. PLZ pop out 5 MINIMUM kids because the USA desperately needs solid youth
Love Rod Stewart...The Killing of Georgie...Part I & II.......
Your video included the intro.....love that intro
Rod in concert is spectacular and he played soccer so there are soccer balls being kicked.
This is my favorite Rod Stewart song and possibly my favorite 79’s song! I am a big fan!
This was played on the rock radio stations hundreds of times a day...no exaggeration.
He's singing about a relationship with an older woman...💛
For Decades the mandolin was credited to Mystery Man. Within the last 5-10 years, Faces guitarist Ron Wood revealed he'd brought his friend to the studio that day. None other than Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page.
1st big hit for "Hot" Rod! Thanks for your reaction.
I Am Sailing is my favourite song of all time ❤️💯%...
Try listening to early Rod Stewart before he went solo. Phyton Lee Jackson 'in a broken dream' or The Faces 'Cindy incidentally'
With respect, I am baffled at what rock some folks must live under to have not ever heard some of these decades-successful artists like Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, Billy Joel, etc. Just amazed. I am equally saddened how much musical education has deteriorated in public schools over the years. I graduated in 1980 and my music teachers made sure I could identify the sound of every instrument that would come from an orchestra or band. That's a mandolin being played at the end of the song.
I remember listening to Rod Stewarts Maggie May in the early 70s cruising in my custom van, vans were popular back then. And even after all this time, when I hear this song, for a reason that I don’t remember, it takes me back to an intersection near my home where I grew up.
There are certain MUST hear/own iconic albums/artists & "Every Picture Tells A Story" album is one of those.
A live version is always best with Rod. He's interesting and a dynamic performer.
EXACTLY..
One of my favorites
That instrument at the end is a mandolin!
Great rabbit hole to go down.. he is in a group.. the faces ...stay with me.. a great song
The only rocker that I know of that always had the mandolin in his works.
More songs with Rod Stewart; Baby Jane, Downtown train, sailing…. And many more…😊
Before I even watch the reaction...I am laughing and excited to see your reaction.😊
