The one KEY element of the song that you guys may have missed is that Maggie was an OLDER woman. ("The morning sun when it's in your face really shows your AGE... but that don't worry me none, in my eyes you're everything." She is a cougar, who lures this young schoolboy (let's hope it's college, lol) away from home, his studies, etc. using her sensuality. She's probably having a midlife crisis and needs him to feel young again, and he's so in love (or lust) that he's "as blind as a fool can be" and is being toyed with for her amusement and to keep her company. The age gap is only alluded to the ONE time in the song, but it changes the whole dynamic.
I have a 1967 cougar 390 4speed ! Thanks
No, certainly not college. No one in the UK would have referred to college/uni as 'school' at this period. He's about to begin a year (let's hope it's his last, lol) at secondary school, and his youth gives the song the edginess I've always associated with it.
Yes.
Yes an older woman - [EDIT - FOR THOSE SIMPLETONS OR WHO HAVE DIFFICULTY READING ENGLISH - NOW HERE IS MY SIMILAR STORY] Even 22 can seem old to me when I was just 18 and after this song was released and I had just started university, my first love/lust taught me about making love but derailed my studies - very heady times and so very poignant - this song takes me back there, every time..
Not only that, but at the end of the song he hasn't left her yet. "I'll get on back home...one of these days." I always liked that little bit of a dark ending, where he's sort of stuck in limbo.
The album this was on, Every Picture Tells A Story is one of the great albums from the era. Every song on it is great. Mandolin Wind, I’m Losing You, the title track, Reason To Believe, Tomorrow Is A Long Time. All are awesome. Pick one an give it a listen. You won’t be sorry
For real!
Agreed! “I’m losing you” is an amazing example of perfect rock-n-roll
Great album for sure
Love Reason to Believe.
@@r5photography it's a decent cover of a Temptations track
Hey kids, that's a 52yr old song that will last forever. I am approaching 70 and as a 17 yr old naval cadet, I remember my 'Maggie May' very very well
This was my husbands an my song since 1969 and my name is Maggie May. Still makes me feel I am at college. Love never grows old.
As parents of young girls, you would LOVE Rod’s “Forever Young”!
Forever Young was originally a Bob Dylan song. Rod Stewart added a lot of lush production and a good music video.
ua-cam.com/video/Frj2CLGldC4/v-deo.html
I had that song for my son’s dance with me ( his Mom) at his wedding... this song and rod’s rendition just meant everything I wanted to say to my children!!
@@alexanderwalter4595 Rod's song is actually a different song entirely that he co-wrote about his children although it was lyrically very similar to the Dylan song with the exact same title. It was so similar that Rod sent the song to Dylan asking if he had any problem with him recording it. They agreed to share royalties from the song.
"The First Cut is the Deepest", and "Tonight's the Night", so many songs to choose from.
Tonight's the Night is one of my favorites 👍
I love The first cut!! X
Must say that they should listen to Cat Stevens original of “First cut is the deepest” rather than Rods version.
First cut is a Cat Stevens song though Rods version is good
Years ago someone described his voice as sandpaper on velvet. I always found that a perfect description. Love him.
most accurate description i have heard. proud old canadian boomer who was/is a great fan, but some how missed that description. thank-you
-#sexy-- raspy-
Every picture tells a story! You wear it well! I'm losing you!Mandolin wind! All great songs from Rod!
A near perfect song and performance. Rod was a King in the 70s.
And gain in the 80s and 90s, lol he is a legend!
I loved early Rod just like I liked early Elvis. They both went "Vegas" and sucked ever after. He was exceptional when he played with Jeff Beck.
King of the 70s, up till 1977, then a train wreck for five years, then a master again. Masterful: "The First Cut Is The Deepest", "You're in My Heart", "Sailing"
Dreadful: "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy", "Hot Legs", "Ain't Love a Bitch"
I sang this every morning of my first pregnancy 31 years ago. I didn’t know if the baby was a boy or girl. I didn’t name her Maggie 😀
@@shannonperry9530 OH YEAH 70`S , 80`S 90`S .... Simply The Real
Superstar !!!
Listen to “Stay With Me”. He has a lot of great songs but that is one of my favorites and I have to smile at his audacity every time I hear it.
The girls LOVED Rod......
So many decades to explore with Rod. From his sexy 70s, to his mastered 80s, to his crooner 90s. His discography is massive.
Rod is definitely a legend. This song as well as "the first cut is the deepest " are my 2 favorites. But ya can't go wrong with any of his hits....and there are many.
His later hits were pop crap.
From this same album, "Every Picture Tells A Story" and "(I Know) I'm Losing You"
Every picture tell a story.
Mandolin Wind, with Ron Wood
Fun fact: Cat Stevens wrote the first cut is the deepest as a teenager!
PP Arnold’s version of “First Cut is the Deepest” is the best IMO. And I say that as a huge Rod Stewart fan.
“Stay With Me” by Faces, with Rod as lead singer is pure energy from start to finish. Should be added to your list.
Absolutely.
One of the best intros in rock music! Had as my ringtone.
100%.
My fave!
Awesome track
You HAVE to listen to FOREVER YOUNG by Rod!! You will more than cherish that song always and that can be guaranteed! It will explode every heartstring for every child you have. Tissues required.
This was Rod Stewart’s first hit, and it was everywhere on the radio in 1971. No rock song that I’m aware of had ever featured the mandolin. A huge hit!
REM "Losing My Religion" has the mandolin as the lead instrument
"Maggie May" expresses the ambivalence and contradictory emotions of a boy involved in a relationship with an older woman and was written from Stewart's own experience.
Not true the song is a metaphor about Rod overcoming his addictions.
@@MrTsimpson123 In a Jan. 2007 interview in Q magazine, Rod said it was inspired by his 1st sexual experience, with an “older woman” he met at the 1961 Beaulieu Jazz Festival (he was 16). He also said her name was not Maggie May. He got that name from “an old Liverpudlian song about a prostitute.”
I what's going into my senior year, when this song came out. It brings back such great memories
@@MrTsimpson123 where is the source of your info? Not saying you're wrong, just never heard that POV before.
Yep, I am a huge Rod Stewart fan. I have seen multiiple interviews where he says the song is based on his first experience. It was with an older women at a music festival.
Rod Stewart has some really great songs. “You’re In My Heart” and “Forever Young” are two of my favorites. As a new mom I think Amber will love “Forever Young”.
I danced to Forever young with my son at his wedding. Cried my eyes out!❤
Agree. Nice one
@@donnagonatas3155 I did the same.
@@Kimberrann perfect song. Forever your babies😭
Bob Dylan wrote Forever Young for his son, a lullaby!
Grew up with this wonderful song. But don't sleep on "Mandolin Wind" or "You Wear it Well."
LMAO Jay was like "She broke his heart and took his soul!"
Rod Stewart is a British National Treasure, he's made so many great records an couple of my favourite 'The First Cut Is The Deepest' and 'You Wear It Well'.
The mandolin in this song is the spice that makes the dish! Love Rod's earlier stuff.
It’s my favorite to, but I thought it’s a Ukulele. So I looked it up and it’s a Ukulele. Only reason I knew was because I grew up listening to them. They are similar tho.
@@mitzicoleman7187 is a mandolin. It's even in the liner notes on the album. Ray Jackson on mandolin. A ukulele does not sound like a mandolin.
Ray Jackson from the band Lindisfarne played it & he didn't even get a credit for doing it, (apparently Rod had forgotten his name!)
@@Rob-fs8vq true! I believe the notes said something like Mandolin on Maggie May played by Lindisframe.
Yep, Ray Jackson, Lindisfarne
There’s something magical about the mandolin into to this song... 😌
One of the best sing-along songs of all time. I'm sure the number of people screaming the lyrics while driving down the road is mind boggling. I don't think I have ever met anyone who didn't know this song and it's lyrics by heart. A true classic.
That "sound" was a MANDOLIN which is seldom used in contemporary music. It has such a distinctive sound that tickles the ears......
You simply must watch Rod with The Faces performing "STAY WITH ME" live. It is the epitome of a Rock And Roll band doing what they do best. Every member is absolutely 💯 % on point! 😀
Excellent choice!
Their "Maybe I'm Amazed" beats the original, IMHO.
God bless you and thank you !!!
This takes me back. My old school days listening to this with my then girlfriend....oh boy, what memories. Thanks for playing it.
Rod Stewart does a great cover of "I'm Losing You".
That sound you loved is a mandolin.
This is a song about a kid being lured into a relationship with an older woman ( a cougar), then after he falls hard for her, she moves on the a new conquest and drops him.
'You Wear It Well', is a similar sounding song. 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy', is a disco song he did. 'Hot Legs' is another good one, but he's had numerous hits over the years.
He was with The Jeff Beck Group and Small Faces, as well as having a successful solo career. My wife and l were dating, when this song was a mega hit in '71.
Faces. Small Faces was a different group.
I have a 1967 cougar 390 4 speed,thanks!
Glad someone explained it to them
I wonder if you're like me and wish that the Faces had stayed together ? I have the same reaction every time that Amber did when he heard the mandolin. And after this song my next favorite is Do ya think I'm sexy - it may have been cheesy but boy did he pull it off. I think they would both like it. My 3rd fav is Tonight's the night
This is the song that put Rod on top.I had a .45 of this song and played it many times. Those were good times.
I was a firefighter in Galveston when I first heard Maggie Mae. We were waiting for the arrival of a tropical storm. A cop stopped my the station in his patrol car, and we were talking to him when Maggie Mae came on his portable radio. The conversation abruptly ended, and we listened in awe. As soon as it ended, I asked, "Who the f*** was that?" None of us had ever heard him before.
I later heard the 'B' side of the 45rpm record, Reason to Believe. Whenever I was near a juke box I played both sides.
Rod with Faces is one of the best bands to watch on stage, they had a lot of fun on stage.
Used to be The Small Faces before it got shortened.
Love, Love “Maggie May” !
Great choice
Had that experience at 19 .. Never forgotten , A very beautiful 35 year old woman..
I'm a 60 year old woman who first heard this song when I was in the 4th grade. It's been one of my favorite songs ever since.
Another favorite Rod Steward song: "Young Turks" Yes, his voice is unique. "Da ya think i'm sexy" its kind of an awesome fun disco song by him too! Oh, and "Some guys have all the luck"!
Was starting to think I was alone in mentioning’Da Ya think I’m Sexy’. It brings back memories of the back seat if a VW Bug (tight fit), smoking, uhm you know, tearing down the road singing (screaming) the lyrics- well the chorus anyway🤣. The 70’s and 80’s were good times, don’t think we really realized it the time.
I love Young Turks!! Great story tellin in that one!
Another vote for listening to the song "Young Turks"
I loved the song Young Turks
A little known fact-Rod was considered a good enough soccer player that he was encouraged to go pro but he chose music instead. We’re all the happier for it too.
Could have played professionally. I saw him in the old annual England-Scotland game a Fram in Palos Verdes maybe 20 years ago, on the field with Richard Gough and Ally McCoist.
@ Steven Ellers re Soccer Star ; Well known fact : Rod Stewart is the principal / victim / perpetrator in the most well-known urban legend of modern times. It happened early in 1971 right at the time of Maggie May. Everybody without exception believed it. Any comments? I'm a wacky Christian now so there's no way I would now mention this greatest of all urban legends if I hadn't have lived through it. Rod Stewart is the principal in without a doubt the most classic urban legend of our time. God bless Scotland. Rod was Scottish.

Celtic was interested in him in his youth.
I've seen him 1st hand at his concerts juggle and launch soccer balls from stage that are tossed up for him. He's a huge Celtic fan and attends many of their matches when he can, especially any big ones.
November 5th, 2021.
Steve,
Greetings and God's blessings.
I responded to your comment in the main comment section so everybody could read it. Now that I posted it to the main comment section it looks like the comment I posted to the main/original comments section ( as opposed to a response which would not be seen by readers unless they looked up the responses to your comment ) was retained under your heading also. I guess God really wants you to read it . A reply to you was where I first wrote the main comment. I've done this a few times so I know the format. I've learned to cut and paste my response to the main section so more people can read it. Usually a person gets one or the other between the posting placed in a reply or posted in the main comment when one cuts and pastes from a reply to a comment. I call a lot of prayer lines. I called one to get some prayer support before I made the main comment post. The one I called before posting had a lady named Fiona who was from Scotland that prayed for the posting. Otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned Scotland as my last comment. Pretty interesting. Rod Stewart in an interview discussed the 1971 urban legend with Katie Couric of Yahoo News in 2012. It's easily available on the internet. One can come back and edit comments anytime. There's an old saying that there's no writing just rewriting. At the risk of leaving a few proofreading errors I'm going to send this now and know that I can edit in the days to come.

Rod Stewart was known as a great poet his music was very down-to-earth
Love Rod Stewart..,he has a long career. In his older years he reinvented himself came out with crooners song. All his songs are amazing.Reason to believe, Do you think I'm sexy,Forever young......
"Your in my heart" is another Great song of his.
Yes! I agree!!! ❤️
"Maggie May" is the original "cougar" song. lol "The First Cut Is The Deepest" "Tonight's the Night" "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" "You're In My Heart" "Reason To Believe" and "Handbags & Gladrags" would all be great Rod Stewart reactions.
Forever Young
Lol! So true! 🤣😂
Hot legs! Is a great rocker
Mrs Robinson , Simon and Garfunkel.....?
Best song of his....Every Picture tells a story.
“YOU’RE IN MY HEART” - by Rod Stewart! You will ❤️ it!!!!
Rod in his wild days with the Faces was one of the best rock'n roll bands of the beginning 70s.
Yes, Rod Stewart Faces is a great band. A lot faster passed.
I agree. Rod and Ronnie Woods’ “Stay With Me” is my favourite rock song of all time. You must check out their live performance of it on UA-cam!
@@johnwaga3702 Love that song. One of the ones I used to get my die hard jazz aficionado father to actually listen to...and like!!!
He and Ronnie Woods were in the Jeff Beck Group before that. Check out their version of "I Ain't Superstitious"
@@wandaminter9421 Both you and your father had great taste!😎
From that same album (Every Picture Tells A Story) a song that really show off Rod's voice is Reason To Believe.
One of the top voices in pop history.
My favorite Rod Stewart song is "Have I Told You Lately". It's so romantic.
Rod Stewart's "You're In My Heart" is one of the best love songs ever. It's a must hear!
I just voted for that!! Yes please!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The instrument that comes in toward the end, playing the high, trilling notes, is a mandolin. They're commonly used in bluegrass music, but are pretty unusual in rock. Next Stops:
"Forever Young"
"Young Turks"
"People Get Ready" (featuring Jeff Beck)
That was my guess. Big fan of bluegrass
What? No 'If You Think I'm Sexy'?
@@jackies5481 I try to limit myself to three Next Stops each time; I've kind of made a game of it.
Jeff and Rod’s version of People Get Ready is just sublime! One of the best versions of that song!
@@jackies5481 I think they reacted to that one already?
I first heard this song as a young teen girl. Now I'm a retired senior. Whoa! What a difference, LOL!
Really brings back memories from my younger days. This song must be at least 50 yrs old.
You guys have reacted to Rod before, the song was “Da Ya’ Think I’m Sexy”….”Maggie May” is one of my absolute favorites ❤️. Try “Young Turks” and “You Wear It Well” next.
💯
I watched an interview with Rod on a talk show and he sang this song. When he finished, one woman in the audience yelled out, "I lost my virginity to this song!" He just kind of stepped back and smiled. He said, "You did? Did anyone else lose their virginity to Maggie May?" and about 25 people raised their hands...both men and women. It was so funny. Thanks for your reaction guys. Rod sure was fun to grow up with. Take care and be well. Peace. ☮️
I would have guessed that it was "Tonight's the Night'
@@theresamariegoesplaces9688 was for me
@Theresa Marie Goes Places....That song probably would have had 45 people that raised their hands. lol ☮️
@@rickycoleman8841 ....very cool. ☮️
Oh so funny!!
It's always good to hear the mandolins come in at the end of this song.
I knew Amber would melt once the mandolin strings broke in. So unexpected on the first listen, but so great.
The Rod Stewart rabbit hole is a good one to explore. “Hot Legs”, “Tonight’s the Night”, “Young Turks”, “Forever Young” are some of my favorites.
Young Turks takes me so far back into my early teens.
Love Rod in general. So, so many great songs! For sure though, Young Turks takes me back to high school days too. They really can't go wrong down this road.
❤🎧 If you go down the Sir Rod Stewart rabbit hole, I promise you that you'll discover a ton of classic songs! Rod has been recording for 60 years, and he's still going strong. Much like Sir Elton John, Rod covers the categories of: pop-rock, blue-eyed soul, blues-rock, folk-rock, soft rock, and some fun disco numbers. ❤🎧
And don’t forget Sir Robert Plant
@@leannewilson7184 I wish we could have a Sir Donald Fagen
You haven't even scratched the surface of Rod yet!
Rob Stewart is an icon, please forever your an this old heart of mine with ron isley (you will love it)
Give a listen to "Forever Young" "Lost In You" "Young Turks" "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" "Infatuation" "The First Cut Is The Deepest" and so many more.
"Lost in You", "Do you think I'm sexy", "Young Turks", Infatuation".
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was only joking, my fav.
That mandolin break at the end gets me every time; absolutely enchanting.
Rod's Maggie May never gets old. Never get tired of it. The Mandolin is always a delight.
The mandolin...
So happy you are reacting to Rod!
Definitely “Forever Young” is a must; especially for parents!
My all time favorite song by rod Stewart!
Saw him in concert in 1978. Man, what a show!!!
Seen Rod about 15 times, his attention to detail and his showmanship are unmatched. He always puts on a great show. You put your money down and he never, never disappoints. Try "Forever Young" or "Sailing" next.
And bring Soccer balls to throw on stage lol
One of the seminal songs of the 70s, his first #1 hit (in 1971). Other great hits (all #1s) are "You Wear it Well", "Sailing", "Tonight's the Night", and "The First Cut is the Deepest".
Quirky factoid - On "Tonight's the Night", there's a voice of a woman speaking french at the end of the recording. Its his then girlfriend/super model Britt Eckland. However, in subsequent releases of the song (after they broke up) they removed her voice background.
Rod Stewart sounds the same today as he did way back when. Years later he can still be the entertainer he is.
All over the radio in summer of 71.
This song is about an older woman using an
inexperienced young man. One of the GREAT songs by an AMAZING artist!!
Forever Young
Have I Told You Lately
Tonights the Night
Love Rod Stewart. Not the purest of singers but his voice is very distinctive! As soon as he opens his mouth you know its him.
Rod says he wrote this song after an ONS with an older woman --- FYI, he was not heartbroken. In an interview I watched once, when asked if "Maggie" was the only older woman he ever had a relationship with, Rod grinned sheepishly and said "definitely not" LOL. My name is Maggie, and I cannot tell you how often the opening verse of this song has been sung to me... however, I absolutely love RS and that mandolin solo is like heaven.
I read it was inspired by his dog.
I love Rod Stewart so many great songs.
One that's worth a listen is by Faces, Stay With Me (live version). Rod gained his popularity in this group, then went solo later.
OMG so emotional listening to Rod....Maggie May was one of my late dads favourite songs. When I was a kid it was playing all the time in our home.... it's a warm hug memory
Heard an interview clip with him, where he said he was driving to London when he heard that this had hit Number 1 in UK. Said he turned the car around and drove home to hug mom and dad. I love that thought.
BTW, I worked one of his shows a few years back. He's still got it, but I'll mention that at 5'10", I towered over him!
Ahhh, the older woman, younger man story. Always a tear jerker.
That instrument at the end is a mandolin. I’m a mandolin player as well as a guitarist, singer and songwriter. Mandolin is such a gorgeous instrument!
The album that this is taken from, "Every Picture Tells a Story" is one of those albums that is considered perfect. There is not one bad track on the entire record. If you want to hear the most amazing drum solo ever, check out Mickey wallers drumming on Rod's cover of the Motown classic, "I know I'm losing you". Rod has been recording for over 50 years. His catalog is immense.
One of the most appealing things of that album - aside from the great songwriting - was that the band were so clearly having a freakin' BLAST playing! It just comes through on almost every track. But especially on I'm Losing You. They're just having so much fun!
Every Picture Tells A Story / What a masterpiece
You really need to check out some Small Faces/Faces e.g. 'Itchycoo Park', 'Stay With Me', and 'Ooh La La' . The Small Faces became The Faces when Rod Stewart joined the band as lead singer.
This brings back memories. When I was in the Army, those of us who played would go to the base Rec Center to jam. I learned to play the intro and the mandolin break on my 12-string Alvarez guitar, and every time I showed up, people would want to do "Maggie May".
Rod Stewart is awesome and has many great songs. Maggie Mae is one of his best.
The LEGEND Rod Stewart! Great pick and reaction. He has a great catalog!
Rod was Good man. "Every Picture Tells a Story" and many more...
My Mom was absolutely in love with Rod Stewart. This was the song that made her fall in love with him. She passed away in 2020. This song hits me in the feels. ❤
My sister too was totally in love with him.
You wear it well, Mandolin Wind, and, probably one of his finest 'The Killing of Georgie, Parts 1 and 2'. Some rabbit hole you've fallen into guys! Love your reaction to such great songs. After I watched your reaction to Sam Cooke's 'Change is gonna come' I needed a hug from Amber. Great channel you two!
Thanks for that, I hadn't thought of You Wear It Well in years!. You sent me off on UA-cam for a listen for old times sake. Enjoyed it!
Very much in the same style as Maggie May if they are looking for that sound again.
Love Killing of Georgia and Sailing.
Yes, the ballad of Georgie is so raw.
Oh man, one of the great songs of the 70s, and definitely one of Rod's best. Fantastic storytelling here, you guys will love it! Maggie is an older woman who basically took Rod on (in the context of the song's story, no idea if this is autobiographical) as a young boy toy.
Can't believe this song is FIFTY years old...
@@Shrykespeare Oh man, that's nuts - we're not old though, right? ;-)
You don't think the record I' s better without the video ???
He hits that age gap hard with the line "Mother, what a lover you turned out to be'
In a Jan.
Rod Stewart has such a unique sound and vibe.
Maggie is the proverbial older woman and Rod is the young boy tempted from his home.
One of a kind voice.. He's awesome.
Rod Stewart's earlier stuff, like Maggie May, could make you cry. Mandolin Wind, You Wear It Well, Handbags & Gladrags, and Reason to Believe are all worth checking out.
add gasoline alley, love that song.
True, after the early stuff I kinda think later he pretty much wasted his talent, the songs he could have sung with that voice
Mandolin Wind is one of my favorites!
Absolutely mate , Rod in the 70s for me I grew up listening to him mandolin wind , reason to believe, you wear it well my favourites ! also one that people tend to overlook is you got a nerve from foot loose and fancy free 👍
This was a enormous hit for him
Strictly speaking this is not just Rod Stewart. It was a band called The Faces and Rod Stewart was just the lead singer at the time. He later went on to make a hugely successful solo career.
Rod has lots of hits. Definitely a great artist to get in to.
Yeah!!!!! Rod!!! Ive seen him 5 times. Hes so amazing!!!❤❤❤❤
Another rabbit hole to head down!! Rod Stewart was considered very racy when I was in middle school, but I have grown to love him and his amazing music! Go there, you guys will love him!!!
YOU WEAR IT WELL....."Madam Onassis got nothing on you...". Thanks Robsquad! Great reactions. I'm hearing all these songs for the first time again through your ears. I just went back in time to 50 years ago in the Wayback Machine from Mr Peabody. Now do After the Gold Rush by Neal Young to keep up that 1971 vibe.
