- This is a previously unreleased demo recording of the classic Pogues song "Dark Streets Of London". It features a rawer sound, forgotten/unfinished lyrics and a younger sounding MacGowan. I think I prefer this version.
Lyrics:
I like to walk in the summer breeze
Down Dalling Road by the dead old trees
And drink with my friends
In the Hammersmith Broadway
Dear dirty delightful old drunken old days
Then the winter came down and I loved it so dearly
The pubs and the bookies where you'd spend all your time
And the old men that were singing
When the roses bloom again
And turn like the leaves
To a new summertime
Now the winter comes down
I can't stand the chill
That comes to the streets around Christmas time
And I'm buggered to damnation
And I haven't got a penny
To wander the dark streets of London
Every time that I look on the first day of summer
Takes me back to the place where they gave ECT
And the drugged up psychos
With death in their eyes
And how all of this really
Means nothing to me
Now the winter comes down
I can't stand the chill
That comes to the streets around Christmas time
And I'm buggered to damnation
And I haven't got a penny
To wander the dark streets of London
Every time that I look on the first day of summer
Takes me back to the place where they gave ECT
And the drugged up psychos
With death in their eyes
And how all of this really
Means nothing to me
Now the winter comes down
I can't stand the chill
That comes to the streets around Christmas time
And I'm buggered to damnation
And I haven't got a penny
To wander the dark streets of London
To wander the dark streets of London
To wander the dark streets of London
This song saves my life more than any other, turns hell on earth into the funnest moment I've ever had every time I hear it.
Das ist mein Lieblingssong und diese Version ist großartig 😍👍
Amazing. Great energy and a great song. The Pogues were the best from the very start. What a great band, the lot of them.
My favourite Pogues song and a great version. MacGowan, on form, is one of the best lyricists. Currently reading the James Fearnley book so thought I'd check out some oldies.
Great book

The song of youth!
Top song
Long live Mr McGowan
good version!
Goes to show (me), his lyrics are calculated..... as they should be, and it makes him the great songwriter that he is. I mean, the lyrics aren't just laid down, they're worked on until the final version.
Listen to the Boat Train Demo, great lyrics, but the "song" is probably better on the album, when it all flows.
