"The torn up ticket stubs of a hundred mugs, now wash away like dead dreams in the rain" How poetic is that line ? Genius "Shane" ! R.I.P😥
Like Atlantis you just disappeared from view. God bless and thanks for the music
Goodbye Shane, my hero since I was 12, am sat here now at 50 listening to this lyrical genius.
D.I.P.
Drink In Peace.
This album introduced me to The Pogues. Rest in Peace Shane.

Likewise. My gateway to the Pogues. One thing Tower Records got right, recommending these blokes.
Likewise. Back in '89 out in San Diego when I was in USN when I first bought this, on cassette! Lot of wonder under the bridge since. RIP Shane!
Best band ever rest in peace Shane sorely missed
Been listening to pogues for 20 days straight. What a masterpiece this is. Rip shane you legend
Rest in peace big guy. I'll be playing your music to my kids
theyre my boys fave band
We always listen to the Pogues, and Shane in all his many musical incantations over the years, in the car.
Torn ticket stubs from 100,000 mugs. Washed away like dead dreams in the rain. I love that lyrics
Masterful and poetic, a brilliant songwriter.
An absolute genius and legend of his time
The pogues are one of the best bands ever! Seen them in the famous barras , one of the best nights of my life! Don't get bands like that no more!
RIP Shane MacGowan. You’re cashing your twin trifecta up at White City greyhounds in the sky.
It's a day for tears and a day for cheers. RIP Shane
That was such a great song. Happy memories. You were an absolute diamond Shane. X
Only Shane can transform you to a time and place in 2 mins flat and make you feel part of it. Can't think of a modern artist who writes lyrics like that. Unreal!!! RIP Shane....
Alfredo Zitarrosa was the only in the same level..
Like Atlantis you just disappeared from view, Shane. I saw you twice in Boston

There were popular here in France.
Now when I wear a Pogues t-shirt , nobody but old winos in the streets come to me about this band.
Do I have to learn something about this situation?
Oh, fuck-I'm going to have a beer.
And sorry for my bad english.
Oi me bro much love only 31 buy this is my band much respect to France
Who remembers Les Negresses Vertes? A Pogues influenced French group, it seemed-I had their record.
@@surfercrow they are still popular in France, dispite the fact that singer Helno died.

Shane's dancing is joyous
Rest in peace our beloved bard and poet, may the whisky they pour on the other side will wash down all your thirst.
what gloriously textured instrumentation and arrangement. and Shane's voice has so much texture as well. plus, his little dance! i can't get enough of this.
Life has been better because of Saint Shane MacGowan ☘️🚬🥂🖤
Fully agree. Incredible song.
@@danielosullivan3110 On this day he really did become a Saint, Have a great party up there Shane!!
Brilliantly stated 👍R.I.P Shane !
Their masterpiece, if you ask me.
My favorite pogues song. 2 minutes of genius
The winter it is past, the summer’s come at last, the birds they are singing in the trees, their little hearts are glad, but mine is very sad, for my true love is far away from me….same air as curragh of Kildare
Very nostalgic song from the album PEACE AND LOVE dedicated to London (White City).
The song tells about a place where it was celebrated races of dogs and now "paddies and the frogs came to gamble on the dogs".
Congratulations to Shane McGowan for this excelent song.
Here a tower shinning bright
Once stood gleaming in the night
Where now there's just the rubble in the hole
Here the paddies and the frogs
Came to gamble on the dogs
Came to gamble on the dogs not long ago
Oh the torn up ticket stubs
From a hundred thousand mugs
Now washed away with dead dreams in the rain
And the car-parks going up
And they're pulling down the pubs
And its just another bloody rainy day
Oh sweet city of my dreams
Of speed and skill and schemes
Like Atlantis you just disappeared from view
And the hare upon the wire
Has been burnt upon your pyre
Like the black dog that once raced out from trap two
Please note that the album was dedicated to the memory of the 95 people who died at Hillsborough Football Ground.

Forgive me by contradicting you, but the Pogues components, Philip Chevron and Darryl Hunt witnessed the horrible Hillsborough disaster, but WHITE CITY is composed by Shane McGowan.
White City is a place in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, to the north of Shepherd's Bush.
The area now called White City was level arable farmfields until 1908 when it was used as the site of the Summer Olympics. In 1909 hosted the "Imperial International Exhibition" and in 1910, the Japan-British Exhibition. The final two exhibitions to be held there were the "Latin-British" (1912) and the "Anglo-American" (1914). During this period it was known as the "Great White City" due to the white marble cladding used on the exhibition pavilions, and hence gave its name to this part of Shepherd's Bush.
The White City Stadium in the north of the area, known as the Great Stadium, was opened in 1908 for the Olympics. After the Olympics, it continued to be used for athletics until 1914, and was later turned into a greyhound racing track.
The stadium was demolished in 1985, the album PACE AND LOVE, was launched in 1989.
One of the best Pogues' song for sure! so fast and dancing!!
It's like folk punk rock.
@@joliecide is it really? Tell me more!
is what I say on every other pogues song on the current album 😆
@@joliecide Because it is Folk Punkrock lmao
A tower of shinin bright, RIP
read Jimmy Fearnley's book "here comes everyone". awesome for any pogues fan. Shane was becoming increasingly difficult at this time and the band members were getting fed up. Still, best band ever
Seeing Shane do that little dance always makes me smile. 💚
Yes , very funny !
Shane is a feckin genius !, Fantastic songwriter
Ah isn't it just great. It really does not get any better.
Seriously underrated
100%.
Oh sweet of my dreams
Of speed and skill and schemes
unbelievable writing
Love Shane dancing around, really at his best here, thanks for sharing this
in his prime is right.
What makes this so great is that, clearly, he - like me has spent years on the terraces at the City desperate for his dog to come in. Lost days.
Many a Taxi I took up to White City from Shepherds Bush and then walked home !!!!
I miss this era , it was a pure hapiness !
Rip Shane
Love this 💚🍀
"Oh the torn up ticket stubs / From a hundred thousand mugs / Now washed away with dead dreams in the rain"
Shane was a hell of a poet...
And the car parks going up, and they're pulling down the pubs, and it's just another body rainy day.
@@jdishner If you didnt' post it it I would have mate , great minds eh !
A touch of blade runner there too…
RIP Legend from White city
I lived in White City for 10 years. My Mother woke up to Shane asleep on her couch in our flat ‘Wolfe Tone house’. My brother had bought him back after a drunk night 😅.
Peace & Love was not a good as If I Should Fall From Grace, but it is still a fantastic album. I bought the cassette (yes, cassette :-D) as a 13 year-old after seeing he White City video on MTV's 120 Minutes, and I have never looked back. The Pogues are one of the greatest bands in history, and Shane is one of the greatest lyricists ever. Love this song, love the band, great memories.
heavy rotation on 120 for sure.....I remember I hated it when I first heard it but it grew and grew on me, and now I love it....
I loved this album from day one, very interesting mix of rhythms between songs.
RIP Shane ❤
Shane, a lyrical genius xx
The beautiful melody is a traditional tune: The Curagh of Kildare.
+Ben McConaghy And what was it before that? Its like anything else, an evolution.
dbpgh I don't know what it was before that. I wasn't saying anything except that the lovely tune is a traditional air. Borrowing tunes is pretty acceptable in folk circles. Like you say it's just an evolution.
@@benmcconaghy3313 Agree. A lot of the Pogues music was either traditional or based on a traditional piece. It's great to see the traditional songs still in our modern culture. Awesome band. Worked with them and was a great time.
fascinating. I didn't know that. Beautiful song, both versions!
ua-cam.com/video/kv8zyBi4ZXk/v-deo.html
The Pogues are looking great here. Fantastic stuff.
A song for our times I think. Poetry and song speak across the decades. Then it was Irish, now it is others. How would we stand now had our ancestors been turned back and all their gifts and contributions been missed. Think on.
Back then the force of european migration was generative the irish and others were building up something great, now the 'others' are only destroying what was once great.
Goodbye, Shane. And thanks.
GENIUS. Just no other word.
I wish I was listening to these guys when I really appreciated music
I’m learning this on my accordion!
My favorite band ❤❤❤
Absolutely wonderful. The best group of the world.
Valencian Country.
Good ol' West London. Great tribute
Their best songs ever.
Big-Up to the West London Irish (1950 - 85)
RIP Shane
Just heard The Bad News. R.I.P Shane xxx. Please Give Kirsty A Kiss from Me also xxx.
This song brings joy to my heart.
Me encanta este tema. Lo oyes y te dan ganas de volverlo a oír una vez más. Maravilloso ese coro de voces y el bailecito de Shane. Si no fuera español me habría gustado ser irlandes
Good affectionate tribute to White City, west London.
No chorus - absolutely brilliant
Takes me back to Middlesex Poly and directing this video. Lots of fun. I have so much footage we didn't use - of Shane when he came to shoot extra scenes for the video. And a bunch of other stuff with the band and Strummer in NY.
Well done. This is my favourite pogues video.
The guy that saved Irish music and its history has become both, good stuff, you are part of that history 🇨🇮
This video is so dope
@@patrickcallahan9599 that's the Flag of the Côte D'ivoire which is an African country, same flag but flipped, easiest way to remember is by which colour is nearest the pole, Green for Ireland, Orange for Côte D'ivoire
Great job.
BRILLIANT!!! I miss The Pogues!
God Bless The Pogues!
My favorite group and my favorite song.
This reminds me, of only good things in life
The curragh of Kildare 🙌
I'd love to write a song like this dedicated to the memory of Finchley Open Air Pool (that was pulled down in the 1990s)
YES. BEST VERSION. THE WOOS!
I can't listen to the song without them now.
@@squitlawless Any idea where to find a high quality version? Digital or physical? I'm not sure what release this version was on.

Excellent song, excellent video
Thanks so much. I made this right after leaving college. We even shot most of it at my college.
Best band ever. Besided TMTCH of course. :)
When Jolly Ol' England becomes Britainistan this will be the requiem for the whole country.

White City - buried under the Beeb. Thanks.
Comment #200 Of the two opportunities I had & went to see the Pogues here in the U.S. in Chicago, Shane no-showed us for both shows. I’m still get pissed when I think about it. I was young, saved my money, drove for hours to get there, and my junk grabbed by a bouncer, etc… but I still love the Pogues. I did get to see Joe Strummer who stepped in for a few, but it didn’t make up for the TWO concerts he missed!!! Two different years. fuck.
Peace & Love. 🖖🙂💖

the best
does anybody remember them performing on st. Patrick's Day on Saturday Night Live way back in the day. I'm trying to figure out which show that was for nostalgic purposes. I could never forget that performance even though I was pretty young. this guy just looked absolutely smashed and I loved it
St Patrick's Day, 1990. Host was Rob Lowe. They did White City and Body of an American. Perfection.
Denis Miller's reaction to that performance on the news part was "I like the Pogues, but I also really like lyrics."
Yep...watched it that night
That’s how I discovered them!!!!!
The SNL performance was my introduction to them as well! I was in the 7th grade. Me and my mom kept referring to Shane as "The Wolf Man." Fast forward to Easter 1992, my mom went into Middle Earth Records and heard "The Sunnyside Of The Street" playing on their system. She brought home "The Essential Pogues" collection on cassette. We suddenly realized it was the same band that we had seen on SNL a few years before!
Joy!
Thats the man.....
Authentic never lasts long enough, does it?
“Washed away like digeridoos in the rain”
Wunderbar! Ruhe in Frieden Shane
"State of Grace" brought me here jaja
Wimbledon dogs gone now. No greyhound racing left in London.
what about Walthamstow or has that also gone?
gone!
@@robertgodfrey4096 Crayford and Romford greyhound tracks are both in Greater London and both still going, in the London Borough's of Bexley, and Havering respectively. However there's nothing more central than that. I can easily name a dozen off the top of my head that are now long gone, and I am sure there were many more than that.
State of Grace brought me here
good is good
made in england super love it
I’ve been to see them
does anyone notice the 6th finger on the boxers right hand at the very end
