I have this Montero in the same year and trim after my dad called me from Denver Colorado one unpredictable day. "Hey son, I bought a 1991 Mitsubishi Montero, tell mom not to worry. I'm driving through the Rocky Mountains and I'll be home in 18 hours". I'll never forget that phone call.
Very glad that you reviewed this car but disappointed that you didn't mention the history of the Pajero/Montero/Shogun. It is much more than a cheap 1991 off roader, it's viewed internationally as one of the most capable 4X4's ever built.
You can tell mitsubishi really wanted to make a name for themselves with this car, and the first generation is definitely one of the best cheap offroaders you can get right now. Big high mounted metal bumpers and lots of ground clearance, no trim pieces that can fall off, the light covers are made to be replaced if they crack instead of getting a whole new lamp. Just lots of small things that make it a fun budget offroader
I had a blue one in highschool. Was automatic. Probably my favorite car i ever had. Also had a 91 isuzu trooper. Mine had an arm rest but was an automatic. Had computer problems. Left me hanging more than s few times. Still loved that car
Those are awesome trucks. I taught my sister how to drive in the 2 door, 4 cylinder, 5-speed (her first car). I think having it as her first car made her a good driver.
In the Philippines, we have the smaller version of the Montero roughly of the same year, it's called the Pajero. It had a diesel engine (4D56) 2.5 liter Inline 4 cylinder. There also was a V6 Gasoline model but didn't sold well due to our country having higher gas price compared to diesel per liter. Then eventually around 2007 we got the Montero as a mid size SUV but still had the Pajero as a Full size SUV of which both are still diesels.
I have the Montero Exceed 2.4 LWB and have owned my old girl for 17 years. First registered1989. She just makes me smile. I am in the UK, just thought that I would mention that fact Love the video guys
Acceleration: If you really wanted to do something about that, a Toyota 1UZ-FE engine from an old Lexus LS-400 will bolt right on to the transfer case without modification. You will have to move motor mounts though. Actually, all the 1UZs have the same bolt pattern -- and lots of power.
I got two GEN I, a SWB (2 doors) 1988 4cyl with 500k miles and a 1990 LWB (4 doors) V6 with 320k miles. Like yours it has that orange label on the driver’s side door pilar meaning you have the off road package that includes the headlight washers, bouncy seat and rear lsd (limited slip differential).
I've had mine for the last 14 years and I love it. Try finding parts!! Love it so much that I've resorted to having parts made to order when necessary.
Always wanted one of those cars when I was little, remember them when they were new, they would rust, and all of the V-6 developed valve guide problems, but they were great for what they were. Would last a long time
If you ever want to do a power swap for way more, a Toyota 1UZ-FE engine (any of the 1UZ's) will bolt onto the Montero transfer case without modification. You will have to relocate the engine mounts, however.
Sweet vid, love my 91 Montero! Still dealing with the idle issue? My 'bouncing RPM at idle' issue was solved by bypassing the FIAV in the throttle body. ..I tried all of the diagnostics in the FSM and finally arrived at "replace throttle body". As a quick fix, I popped the freeze plugs, bypassed the FIAV and was back in business. It makes it a bit cold blooded but great otherwise!
@@MicahMuzio Absolutely! Growing up in the 80's, my Dad owned quite an assortment of off road rigs that we would beat around in. Definitely some of my favorite memories!!
My parents had a 1990 version automatic. I really miss that car and the center top gauge cluster. Also the shifter for the four wheel drive. That one also had a center foldable arm rest coming out of the driver seat.
Just bought one here on Australia. 1991 Gen 1 V6 petrol auto LWB 300,000kms aud$5000. Driven by a Canadian preschool teacher for the last ten years. Fuckin stoked. Going to be my daily driver. Love these.
I used to have a SWB 1987 Montero - 2.6l, Gas, Automatic in the US, but now living in Europe I've got a LWB 1990 Pajero 2.5l, Turbodiesel, Manual, I definitely prefer the manual diesel, both are great trucks though.
"Working on" the wheels rubbing on tight turns... I don't know if you need to change all the lug studs to do that, but I made a spanner tool to remove the front rotor/disks. It involved grinding some grooves on the outside of a 1-1/2" iron plumbing straight coupler fitting and brazing in a couple of 3/8" dia. pins.
hey hoon - don't "clean" the IAC (11:45). they go bad when people try to clean the MAF or hit it with some other solvent. you can still get the part for under $30 and it takes 5 minutes to replace.
also, your 4x4 is illuminated because the one of the switches on the transfer case needs to be replaced - another cheap part that you can still buy and is easy to swap out yourself.
My 2003 sorrento feels just like this. Dont know if its a bad thing but I love it. Also SR was top trim on monteros sunroof and some other nice things.
What was called the company where he ordered the front grill and is there any link to that company. I think he said "Mohinic" but im not sure and i cant find anything under that name. Thank you in advance!
If you come to Ontario, Canada (Straight Pipes territory) I have a 2008 Mazda5 GT You might find fun to review. It's a 5 speed stick, and in typical Mazda fashion, it loves to be revved on. I'll need to get that exhaust fixed first though. LOL
You review cars for a living on KBB and on your personal channel a la SmokingTire, god I am jealous of your success (not to mention the whole helicopter pilot in sunny SoCal thing too)
I love my ‘98. Decent review, great looking rig. Maybe just take it down a couple notches. Did you guys split a gram prior to filming? It gave me anxiety. Just breathe.
Hello Mica, very good choice, the montero, pajero shogun 4x4 Mitsubishi, what's more, I also have the same car that you are driving, it is 1992 but it is not a manual transmission, but rather it is a 4-speed automatic transmission including over drive. It is the best, I bought it here in Ecuador many years ago, I could say almost as a package, with the only difference that here they sell these cars for the price of 12,000 thousand dollars. Although the truth is I have two Montero cars, the second is a four-cylinder mechanical transmission. Greetings, I hope you come to Ecuador or invite me to your country, goodbye.
Is all this in the owners manual? Don't touch that either! And I need help getting in and out sometimes as well-ultra short legs, tremendously long torso and huge hands. Yes, an oddity.
Micah, you seem pained doing your signature rear window test. Have you considered jazzing it up a bit? Perhaps with a prop? How can anyone tell where the sightlines are by just watching the window go down? You need something to place in the back seat, in each video, to give some perspective. It should be the same item for each test. This might also give an idea of how claustrophobic the view out the back is. I think you could get creative with what you use. Stuffed animal. Sensi the censorship bird on a stick. Car seat. Blow up doll. Just a suggestion.
Now that I think about it, a replica of the auto-pilot from the 1980 movie "Airplane!" slowly inflating to full size back there would be priceless! LOL
It's beautiful and love the color tone! I own a Mitsubishi Pajero 1989 L149 2.5 Diesel Turbo, so far I have been using it for daily and for a road trips ua-cam.com/video/Emi1eF69-hE/v-deo.html and it's pretty basic and durable kinda car. It's also so very easy to maintain.. It is a very fun and enjoyable to drive, they are not meant to go fast but it is everything for me.. love ever since! Planning to convert to camper for future plan!

When the apocalypse comes around, old 90’s and early 00’s off-road SUV’s will be the best chance we get to reunite the fractured nation states.

I was just watching some kbb reviews with you doing the reviews and i jist had to come over here and say youre hilarious!!!!
I really appreciate you taking the time. Cheers!!
I knew someone at my high school who had one of these, an antique. I always thought it was a cool vehicle.
Love my 1990. The Monty's are best!
Raider/Pajero/Montero/Shogun/Galloper :)
Love this vid. I grew up in one of these. These things are tanks.
Tony Montero is a good name. Nas mentions this in "The World is Yours", which completes the Scarface connection.
Have an '88 Raider since 2001, best trucks, more vids.

I don't really care for this channel that much but good choice on reviewing this car. Also a similar era Isuzu Trooper could be warranted.
wave runner Well, thanks for powering through the video despite your dislike. 👍 I’ll see what I can do about that Isuzu Trooper review.
Just discovered your channel.. Felt like I was riding with you guys in the back seat ..cool!

I would love to find something like this or a Toyota 4-runner of the same era, just to have an off road tank. Very nice example and great review!!

I miss my '04 Sport, I'm stupid for gettting rid of it. Can't find another one anywhere
It's the best 4*4 of the world.
Most owners kept that early montero until it was needing $$$$ work , passed it off to their boy etc.. I was a mitsu tech
nice work on your Montero...mine has 298K miles and want to give it a face lift, what is the name of the auto parts place in S. Korea? thanks
Mohenic garages

Is the engine in that car good?
I think mine was the same year. A blue LS 4 door but with an automatic, and a huge sliding electric glass sunroof. Bouncy seat rules!~
I would love one of these, but I’m curious about part availability. Do you have trouble finding parts for it?
Always love square cars
Sensi missed an s-bomb at 11:49
Do your job sensi!!!

According to Jeff, it's a company in the Philippines called "Mohenic" with an E. Try googling "mohenic pajero grill".
@@MicahMuzio It worked! Thank you!

Hi. Could you please tell us wich size of wheels were the original for your Montero? Thanks!
15-inch wheels are the original stock size. The ones on this truck are 16-inch wheels.
