Absolutely wonderful talk, love it, l was there at Stamford bridge in the 1960s and 70s, fantastic players, Chelsea were my life. It's not the same anymore, Peter Osgood, Alan Hudson, Charlie cook, Ian Hutchinson
Alan Hudson was good enough to play more than 100 times for England. He was better than any other midfield player then or now. Must ask Alan: Could you and Stanley Bowles have played together in the same team.
You mention, AH, having Peter Storey turning up as mini cab driver, such was the fortunes of ex players of that era no matter how great their talents. I was working at an advertising company in Knightsbridge in 1984 where for a period of time following his spell in management John Dempsey was also working as the company delivery (van) driver. - great guy Was a great fan of Chelsea late 60s - mid 70s , and living in Mitcham spent many a Tuesday morning watching you guys train at the sea cadets sports ground (now home to Tooting and Mitcham United) Thanks for the memories
fantastic as usual, what an era that was, i grew up in the 70s and it was a brilliant time for football, far far better than today's sanitised boredom, birch was a great character, that Leicester side he played in was full of characters, i could listen all day to these reminiscences, the stories are brilliant, so sad about the great stan bowles passing, he was a magnificent player but i know dave sexton had problems with him, it was a tragedy that QPR didn't win the league in 76 as they were the best footballing side and it would have been lovely for stan to have won something, far less talented players won loads of medals whereas a genius like stan won nowt, same in 75, Stoke were the best side and should have won it but sadly didn't, thanks a lot for a fantastic podcast, best wishes to all concerned
Osgood was the best centre forward He should have played in Mexico ... Jeff Astle Francis Lee were not up to international standard Typical of England managers .. Same as Jack Grealish.. Thanks for the show The producer is doing a great job
Ossie was good but so was Lee, Astle you are correct. BUT the mistake was Ramsay taking Charlton off it allowed Beckenbauer a free run. Up until that point Beckenbauer was too busy keeping Bobby in check. This was despite Banks noit playing. That was a great squad. then he really screwed in in 74. As for 78 that was too a travesty. For England not to make a World Cup in 74 and 78...absolute disgrace the quality of players we had would walk rings around the current crop.
love Alan but I think that in a lot of games that ive seen on you tube of that Chelsea side the only two super greats were ossie and charlie , the rest of the side were good but not in the class of these two and was the cat as good as jennings?
