I purchased this one from Walmart. I added ice water and I did wet the filter under the tap (no freezer).
I find the unit to cool off the area for me where I am sitting next to it and am outside reading the paper. I am in Houston,Texas and it is humid out here today 5/26/21.
Gonna keep it bc I like reading the paper and I do enjoy the cooler breeze from the unit.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a small Swamp Cooler!
Swamp coolers only work in dry climates. We have one in the SoCal desert and use it in addition to our two ACs. It works great here when days are sometimes 110 degrees, but don’t expect it to work in humid conditions.

That's right. Here in Phoenix we've had Swamp Coolers for many decades. If you can wet the cooler pads then put them in the freezer of course itll be very cold but that's just using your freezer as an airconditioner. The goofy guy in the video doesn't even need an AC. You have to live in a place where it's over 110F to understand. This little box will melt in Phoenix.

Just a quick thought and I might be wrong. The IR thermometer might be measuring the temperature of the blades not the air. This means that if the material absorbs the cold then it is lost from the air being blown out because some materiasl absorb temperature better than others. This might be why the temperature registers as warmer in the new model. Doesn't mean that the air has that temperature, but it might be a close enough approximation.

The thing with evaporative coolers is that the air needs to be hot and dry to start with. If your ambient humidity goes above 15 or 20%, they don't work well at all. I have a large one on top of my house and here in the southwest U.S., where the air is pretty dry (usually 12-18% humidity), I can keep the inside in the mid-70's even when it's 95+ outside!😉

I've read it's counteractive to because the air needs to be warm and dry for it to pull in the air and work properly. It will feel colder at first but evaporative units won't woyk properly like that. I tried and it didn't work so that how I found out. You'd get better results just putting a bowl of ice in front of a fan.

    Good review and points made.
One other thing that I will point out for those that may not be aware is that this increases the humidity levels in the room as opposed to a typical a/c which removes moisture and lowers humidity. The increased humidity is not good for long term use especially in a closed space with poor circulation.

A bowl of ice cream I kid you not! I think I’ll leave it right where it is at! Slept so hard I didn’t even run to the freezer to refuel it lol. My BR was nice and cool when I woke up. So everyone I give it 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 & a 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. I subscribed to your channel and can’t wait until I’m off work on Sunday. Gotta have a look at your videos. You’re so interesting to listen to so looking forward to that. Now I will tell my co-workers who say that their window AC in another room doesn’t work well in the BR. They are gonna love it. My motto ✌🏼❤️✌🏼❤️✌🏼❤️✌🏼
      Stay safe out there!!!! J

I have the Original i bought when I lived in Alabama. It didn't work well in the South. I moved to New Mexico and it works beautifully! It's an evaporative cooler which works best in dryer not humid climates. It cools small spaces. I have mine by my bed. And I put ice water with cubes or crushed in it.
It's great for when the power co decides to have a power save event and the disable everyone's AC compressors at peak time. Makes it comfy in a small space and makes you able to stay home with no AC for the 4 hour power save events.

Hey there John, I just watched your review on the Artic Air Ultra, I have to say I thought you were rather harsh. I purchased a the same product a yr or more ago and have used it daily during the hot months non stop. I live in So. Texas. Where the temps are passing 95° by 7:00 am and usually in the 104-109° by 2:00 pm. I was recently in the hospital for 5 days and nights. Both the staff and patients were complaining of the lack of A/C and coolness. My son brought my fan and yes it did make the room cooler. Several of the medical staff were impressed and spoke of purchasing a unit in their future. Thank you.

It reminds me of a time when my air was out. I used a small portable fan approximately the same size as this unit. Set a metal bowel of ice in front of the fan and " Walla' cool air. I also tried one of those frozen plastic ice blocks to keep thing cool in your lunch bag/box ie... I'm wondering how much difference the was. I think the best way to make on of these to it full convenient is to have a refrigeration coil the fan blew through and build a water reservoir that would automatically shut off when reach to its capacity.

Just purchased a unit and it seems to work fairly well. The materials used seem flimsy and cheap, but cool air blows out just using tap water. Tried freezing the filter, and the air seems a little cooler blowing out. I'm thinking if you keep a few bottles of ice cold tap water in the fridge-freezer, you could frequently change the water during real hot temps for constant cool air. I sent for a second filter as well thinking that I could keep a second one in the freezer and rotate as needed. Maybe if on the road in a vehicle without AC (becoming rare these days), a little cooler with ice packs could hold extra ice water bottles and a cold filter or 2 to switch out or refill as needed. It's not sweltering hot yet here in early May, so we'll see what the real deal is in a month or two.

Another note: traditionally evaporative cooler pads consist of excelsior (aspen wood fiber) inside a containment net. The excelsior is woven to allow space for air to pass through. If I was to have one built I would use plastics for the box, the longest-lasting fan possible with the same CFM as the Pure Chill, a wet/dry pump as I need to leave it running 24/7 for my hand so it dries out overnight (alternately add 25% to the water tank) and a pad the same depth as the Pure Chill, which is thinner than the Ultra, made of excelsior. The adjustable panel in the front is critical (my Pro version had the adjustable front) so I can point it straight down at my hand. I think all of this is critical for normal use as well.

The one I'm using has been running 24/7 for a full year and is cranking out air as cold as when it was new. Just keep the tank full and clean the pad (filter) and it should work great. Sometimes the pump does not spray water as often as it should. Simply It a few times on the top and it should start going again. MAKE SURE TO USE ONLY BOTTLED WATER!

I have 2-one in bsmt bedroom and one in kitchen. Works good in kitchen. Basement one condensates water and leaks on floor. Hours running with full tank is way optimistic . Air conditioning dehumifies- these coolers don't. The good thing about them is they use 2 amps. Window AC units use 15 amps when compressor kicks on. These work best with cold water in tank.

    Question:
What is the temp of the room that you tested these in?
If the units are cycling air that’s already been cooled through regular AC, this would skew the test, as opposed to testing these in a room where the ambient temperature is in the mid 70’s (or higher).

  • @JamesDavidWalley
    @JamesDavidWalley 4 роки тому +103

Coolers like this work according to two principles: simple airflow (the fan) and evaporative cooling (passing the airflow through a damp filter). Each can give a separate subjective sense of cooling, depending on the conditions.
In this case, you were already in a room at standard "room temperature," so just moving more air faster will give you a sense of coolness. Therefore, the unit with the more powerful fan will seem to cool well, even if it doesn’t do much to drop the temperature (as the Ultra didn’t seem to be doing by more than a couple of degrees). Frankly, a strong table fan with a larger surface area of the blades and a more-powerful motor would probably seem to do an even better job. But, when you're in an overheated room (say, over 80 degrees), the roles get reversed. A stronger fan will simply push more hot, uncomfortable air at a higher speed. In that case, the cooler with the stronger evaporative cooling may seem to work better, as it will actually drop the temperature of the air it’s pushing out.
It's a shame you couldn’t have conducted these tests in a really hot room, which is probably where most people will be using this. Based on the size of the filters (and, thus, the evaporative capacity), I'm guessing the original would do a better job, even if you had to have it only a foot or so away.

I disagree with testing without soaking. It concept is blowing air over water. I had an (very) old one, maybe in the 70's or 80's and what it ended up doing was to make the room much more humid. It was effectively a humidifier. I noticed items in the room actually getting slightly wet.

For those who don't know what a Vornado fan is, look it up. It does wonders with the added Vornado fan blowing from behind the unit. Try that simple modification

    • @cobbler88
      @cobbler88 2 роки тому +1

A lot of these are just less messy versions of using a block of ice and a fan. Agree wholeheartedly on the Vornado. I wanted a fan for camping in my SUV, and there is one model that pushes a lot of air but requires so little energy to run that I can run it all night off a Jackery 240 and still have (if memory serves correct) about 2/3 of the charge left in the Jackery.
It's worth the money (about $45, I believe) but there IS a Honeywell one they sell at Walmart for about $16. But it has 3 fixed fan settings and runs louder than the Vornado, which has a smooth dial to set the fan speed exactly the way you like it. It also takes way more juice to run (I think around 3x-4x as much) and doesn't push as much air when set equally quiet to the Vornado.

Mine seems much quieter than the one you have 🤔 I really like it next to my bed. I turn my ac off at night to save some bucks. Like a few others have said, freeze the filter and put a couple frozen water bottles behind the unit and you’ll get 4-5 degrees cooler. My temp gauge read 52° from 5 feet away w/ the bottles behind it.

This thing saved my butt the last few days. We had a historic heatwave where I live, the hottest temps ever recorded. I’m waiting on my AC unit to get here, ordered it from Lowe’s and they’re taking forever. So I picked up one of these in the meantime. It really helps cool you down when you sit next to it. It doesn’t cool a room down, but it will cool your body temp down if you put ice in it and sit next to it.

These aren't air conditioners, they just evaporate water in order to trade hot dry air for cold humid air. If you live in a hot dry climate then yes this product works, but where I live we have hot humid air so these will do absolutely nothing.

I'd argue that putting ice into it is also counterproductive. To make ice, you need to remove the heat from warm water using a freezer, which exhausts that heat into your room. The freezer isn't 100% efficient, so adding ice heats the room more than it cools it.

Great review. I work in a small home office and am using this device for the first time. It is an 8'x11' with a ceiling height of ~ 7'. I agree that it is loud and when on calls if you do not have an option to suppress background noise then this will be troublesome. However, I think this may be a more preferred option over putting a small window unit in the only window this room has.

I just received this UNIT, ARCTICE AIR ULTRA and have been using it with ICE CUBES in tray and it really does NOT do more than my SMALL FAN I was using. It is LOUD as well. The fan can be heard in room next door. Not quiet at all. I am not impressed for $89.00. My $9.00 FAN here in my VOICE ACTING STUDIO is quieter, less expensive ($9.00) and same cool air or better with my SMALL FAN. I even added ICE CUBES and I do not feel a diff. The fan MUST hit you head on as well or you do not get cooled down. Again, FAN does same thing.

Once your wet, or frozen, filter dries or thaws, it's a small fan.
Fill an Igloo cooler with ice, open the lid and have a fan blowing across the ice.
Have the drain plug emptying into ice cube trays. Have a valet, or your middle child, taking the filled trays to your freezer, and refilling the cooler with ice as needed and possible.
    Boom!
Coolers come in many sizes, to suit your cooling or picnicking needs.

Indeed you are a rare gem to be so creative inventive and resourceful! I'm definitely returning this because it's just a waste of $139 as the noise is not a continuous sound but it rattles going up and down up and down and the regular Standalone fan is much more effective at blowing cool air.
