They actually DO work in very dry environments. Here are basically a tiny version of a swamp cooler- a type of air conditioning used throughout places like Arizona and Southern California from the 60s to the 80s. I’ve had a large house version and it kept the house very cold but also very humid. It’s the exchange of very dry air with moist air and the resulting cooling effect.

HVAC engineer here: This is an evaporate cooler. When you evaporate water, it takes up energy from the air thus reducing temperature. However, this also increases the humidity which makes it feel warmer. These types of units are really only useful in areas with dry, hot temperatures like Arizona or Nevada.

back back in the days we had a giant "water cooler" , anytime you need basic water. Just go take a shower....LOL

  • @RobertRoberts329

Swamp cooler. Had them for over a hundred years. These are made for arid hot places like Arizona where the humidity is under 30% and you need humidity and cooling.

Works the best in dry climates.
The lower the humidity the better it works.

I just came across one for $4 at goodwill! Haven't tested it with water in it but we will see it does turn on and blows air. I think this would be good for a desk in a office type setting! Blowing right on you it might be ok for that. Great review thank you sir.

i know several people that travel a lot in the desert that like these things and they say that they actually do work very well in the proper setting, but for most people who buy these thinking it's going to work just like an air conditioner in hot humid weather, i understand why so many people say these are junk and garbage.

You would need to run a dehumidifier to lower the humidity put in the air by the evaporative cooler.
