ARCTIC AIR PURE CHILL REVIEW - DOES IT WORK?

- I really like the concept of a small evaporative air cooler (aka swamp cooler) and wanted to give this small Arctic Air Pure Chill a try to see if it worked as well as advertised.
*Needed a cooler for a work cubicle **Fastly.Cool** . It did just what I needed, so easy to used and really cooled the space. I am glad that I got it and would buy it again.*
Pffft yeah I bet it worked 😂

It probably works because his office is in a dry area. For example an air-conditioned building that just wasn’t cold enough for him.
right this ARCTIC AIR best forever
Troll... it DOES NOT WORK!
@@seanoleary1979 Sounds like a sales pitch. Probably a bot, or at the very least someone who works for the company.
I just bought this about 1 month ago. I live in NJ and we have had a few hot nights. I keep it on my nightstand and i love it. I got a good night's sleep and felt refreshed the next day. I wet the filter with cold water and put it in the freezer for about 2 hours before bed. I lined the bottom of the reservoir with ice, and filled it with ice cold water. It served the purpose. It is not meant to cool the entire room just the personal space around you. I would recommend it especially if you are going through menopause. 💯👍🏻👍🏻
Yep, I use it by my beside too. I live in NJ and sometimes it's hot and humid. It cools of my bed just fine. I personally can't stand air conditioning and hence my bedroom is over the garage which central air doesn't really reach. This has been perfect today and the few hot days we had so far.
Does it come with duct tape???? Reason I ask is my wife happens to be in menopause and she cant stop bitching about everything
@@friendlyfire6168 you know what!!! 😂😂😂😂
Yep it works does as it says. it is definently worth it.
I live in South Jersey and have two of them. Even adding ice they do not cool down a hot room. They are a huge rip-off! They are basically small, noisy fans..
Thanks for really trying this product out. Your video feels like a buddy of mine telling me the truth about a questionable product. I did end up buying it, I live in a small studio, no ac, no breeze. I feel like I have a realistic expectation of what it will do. Mad props for your time and effort!
Any chance for a very quick 2-3 sentences review of your experience with the product?
@@EAprima it finally arrived... and your review was spot-on. As you said, it won't cool an entire room, but the chilled air is perfect for keeping me cooler. Thanks! I'm happy with my purchase, and I may buy a second one at some point.
I bought one a few yrs ago & promptly took it right back!
Thank you for the demonstration. Your video is the most thorough and informative on this particular unit thus far. I'm glad I came to your site before I come to a decision.
👋 I definitely change my mien
So many terrible comments, I actually LOVE mine! I live in a 200sq ft studio apartment, and is making a huge difference for me. I had this for over a year in the box but the reviews were so bad I never took it out! 😅 started using it yesterday, I aims towards my bed as I sleep on my nightstand, it’s super tiny and compact. Love it.
Yep. People are so quick to downplay this thing and call it a "scam". It's a personal cooler and I found it does exactly what it's supposed to do.
It's absolute trash!
@@sickandtiredofbeingsickand it definitely wouldn’t do much in a large area! But I live in a tiny box so 😂 keeps me cool while I’m sleepin
Okay here's a real informative review I bought one from Walmart for 40. You freeze the filter inside, then pour ice water through the top, it works well when it's blowing on you. I don't recommend sleeping with it blowing on you because when it becomes empty water starts dripping through the vents and its a fire hazard. It does blow cold air good though
I bet it only takes about five minutes to warm the filter up to room temperature and once the ice melts the cooling effect will be reduced quite a bit. Of course, it all depends on the relative humidity and if you are in a humid environment these devices will be no better than a fan.
@@jamesmorrissey5604 Actually worse than a fan at that point, as it will also raise the room's humidity level making if feel hotter yet.
I bought one too. It's just a humidifier...ok if it blows right on you. I try not to run the AC unless I really have to. So, that being said, it did help. Would not recommend use at night.
I just saw your review, and all I can say is THANK YOU! I am considering buying an Arctuc Air fir my bedroom(I live in North Central Montana, and we're in the middle of a heatwave). I appreciate your review very much--I am on a fixed income, and have multiple health issues, which make the extreme heat DANGEROUS, so this would help tremendously!🙂 Thank you, and God bless you!

I can tell you in all honesty as an H.V.A.C technician that these are a scam and I'm surprised the company hasn't been sued for major false advertising.
It does work to a "degree"
Yes agreed. I’m a fellow air conditioning engineer and these things are a complete scam. Anything that doesn’t have a BTU or K.W rating isn’t a air conditioner period.

Optimally evaporative coolers can drop temperatures 30 degrees, and yes it will, only if the outside humidity is very low. While it may seem placing filters in the freezer and using ice cubes in the water might help, it hinders the evaporative process. Evaporative coolers work best when drawing in hot and dry outside air, cooling and humidifying the air and then letting the air escape through slightly opened windows. Even when our outside temperatures are above 116 degrees, upper 80 degree cooled air does provide relief since it provides moisture that's not present in the dry outside air. The key here is that air must be constantly moving from outside to inside and back outside. Also these extreme temperatures here only last a couple weeks a year and the rest of the time it's a lot more comfortable. You must maintain evaporative coolers by replacing pads just before the hottest time of year, and making sure water is distributed to them correctly as a dry pad will admit hot air into your home. The fan bearings need to be oiled twice during the summer season and the water supply float needs to be checked for proper operation as well. The Cedar pads are best and have a nice natural smell to them.
The added benefit if you can use them is they cost a lot less to operate and maintain than regular A/C systems.
Regarding the little portable coolers, just buy a fan. They don't perform like their marketing claims.
When my A/C failed, I put a damp towel on my bare feet and had a small fan blowing on them and I was surprised how comfortable I was. You should try it just to see how well it works just for a test in case your A/C should ever fail.
.
My 18 litre machine has a powerful fan and it works very well when the temperature is above about 24°C. The small ones are useless !!! But I don't need to oil any bearings or replace pads. I take the pads out in the winter and wash them off !!!! You need to dismantle the fan to oil the bearings which have lubricant in the Bushes. So you don't need to lubricate the bearings for years !!! You don't lubricate an electric fan bearings very often !!!
It’s way better to have a pure white roof instead to reflect 80 to 90% of sunlight. They say that having a pure white roof that at least reflects 80% of sunlight will stay about 28°C/51°F cooler from inside compared to a dark coloured roof on a summer afternoon.
I was looking to use it for car camping in my Ford Focus Wagon and from this review, which I greatly appreciate, I do think it would keep me cool at night and the sound of the fan would help me sleep. But I'm just starting, don't even have solar panels yet.

@@rosskrause3926
@tesscot
It would depend on IF you want it for camping or a small room(as weight wouldn't be big issue at home) and just how much temperature differential you want. To get one, AC, made for travel I would start with an online search for "travel mini air conditioning unit"..."with heat" if you want heat, and try camping Air Conditioning. Then you should be able to find brands and sale locations and online ordering. If you want fast find pay and pick up, then your nearest Truck Stop will be number 1 place to go for small "lightish" travel AC. There's Quick Trip, Loves, Flying J, Pilot, etc. to name just a few in my area. Some restaurant chains have taken on placing their restaurants with the stores and fuel pumps that make up a truck stop. In my area I have seen McDonald's, Subway and Wendy's do so. Number 2 place to go next might be sporting goods stores.
Evaporative cooling is what this little thing does. Older generations and depending on location in the states would call it a water cooler, or swamp cooler, and there are likely other nicknames. High humidity areas may be harder for one to cool as well. Evaporative cooling works by passing air though a damp medium. As the water evaporates (the towel dries) The warmth in the air is absorbed by the medium/towel so it can help evaporate the water out of the medium.
Heat, or heat from a warmer medium will always move to a cooler surface/medium. Just like heat from stove is transferred to the pot with water in it and then from the pot surface to the water, heat moves from air to the wet medium, so air coming out is cooler. That small of a unit would work hard(stay on all day) to keep a well sealed and insulated 10' x 10' room cool. I mean it can do it but a regular water cooler would work so much better at cooling a room. They won't keep as cool as a refrigerated system(AC system) but they are much more efficient because all they are running is a blower motor.
@@rosskrause3926 I know this comment is 2 years old. Answering anyway as other may still be looking. Small TRUE COMPRESSOR type battery powered A/C units can be found easily on amazon, ebay, etc. They cost upwards of $900-1200 and some higher. For any decent run time you also have to buy an "extra" battery and they aren't usually cheap (often starting at several hundred $ and use a proprietary connector which means they can be connected only to the same brand/model and likely won't work on another brand's battery powered A/C). They will run on "eco" mode for about 6 hours with an extra (often lithium) battery connected.
*_Additional Research_*
Some compressor based portable A/C units use a "one hose" design, and some use a "two hose" design. Two-hose designs are GENERALLY better but not always by any significant amount even when running on house mains voltage. Research "one hose vs. two hose portable AC" on youtube (and variations on that theme) to get an idea of the differences.
Normally an evaporative cooler draws in air from the outside. When you recirculate it, the relative humidity goes up and the cooling effect goes down and it will feel muggy. Evaporative coolers almost don't exist in humid areas. If you have to use ice, your freezer is going to be running more (and heating your home in the process) so it really is a losing game.
Here in the Central Valley of Ca, really anything over 95 with a swamp cooler is unbearable. I grew up with swamp coolers. We’ve done all the tricks, frozen gallon jugs, etc……they’re junk, especially in high heat high humidity. They work great at 80 degrees and no humidity, but that’s a tolerable temp anyway.
Yeah, they tend to spew a lot of water in muggy areas.
You crack open every window a tiny bit, or, in a tiny room or camper you open one window about an inch- to get the swamp cooler effect.
Exactly, swamp cooler type cooling works well in the southwest (AZ, NM, etc) because it's hot but very dry... When the outside air is already saturated (humidity) they work poorly, if at all... Which is where regular A/C units work because they remove moisture from the air inside (a dehumidifier is very similar to an A/C).
It going to be 99 degrees with 58% humidity today. Both will increase tomorrow and Saturday to 105 and 106. Bottom line….a swamp cooler ain’t cuttin it.
I tried one once during a Florida summer, when the AC went out in my apartment, and it only succeeded in taking HOT air and making it HOT and MUGGY.
Sadly you already have enough humidity
I’m a truck driver, the company likes us to use less idle time, I use this in place of the truck a/c . I fill with ice and have another fan behind it. This device works well.
Buying it just because a fellow trucker uses it 👍🏽
This is its purpose. Not for ac on whole rooms but for tight spaces up close
Bingo!
hey fellow trucker! thanks for giving me another reason to get it XD i already had 2 reasons to get it but its great to know its application can be used in trucking too.
Think this would be effective in a regular cab Ram?
Here in southern Mississippi and Louisiana, you can save the $40 and use a spray bottle of water. To simulate it further, use a regular fan. It's the same thing basically. On routine summer days, you will not need the spray bottle. Your sweat will suffice.
in Florida too.
bullshit i use a spray bottle and it doesn't work but my portable air conditioner does

I've had one for over a year. It's more of a personal cooler. Cooling a room of any size at all is a tough task and I doubt you won't drop the room temp any more than a degree. Pointing it at your head while working at a desk or work table is your best bet.
So basically it’s just a glorified fan 🤷♀️

Thank you. I was on the fence before watching your vid. Now I bought one. Not gonna replace an AC but just enough to cool down a small office! 👍👍👍
I totally agree. I think the reason so many people complain about these is they think it's going to be like a mini air conditioner and cool down large areas. I thought that it worked just as it claimed to and was quite surprised. I was also a little skeptical about introducing more humidity imto the air but after more use, I found it wasn't an issue. Thanks for watching!
I grabbed one and have been using in the garage. I’m impressed by how if cools but the thing she seems to make a big puddle ( and no I’m not overfilling). I keep mine on an upside down bucket in the shop sink so the water she leeks doesn’t end up on the floor. Have you had a similar issue? Any fix?
I found that it can make some condensation on the outside when using ice water which can result in a little water on the surface, but nothing major. We just set it on a small hand towel to absorb it.

I've had 2 of these for a couple of years or so. Yes they don't replace AC, but put them on your side table near your bed, or coffee table, when I lay on sofa. I think they are brilliant, they keep you cool. But do not cool a full room. They save on your electric, by not using your big AC all the time. All in all I think they are Brill!!!
I bought one for my sister to have in her bedroom several years ago. It was a piece of junk and didn't cool off the air coming out of the vent at all. Out west they call these "swamp coolers." They are quite different from genuine refrigerated air conditioning and will only work in very dry climates.
same. got one at walmart. tried it out. returned it.
In many places it's almost never humid and hot. I'm going to fill it with ice water if that happens, like with my home made ones. It's an almost sure way to get a solar power, low watts cooling.c
I have to disagree just got mine and usually my room is really hot I can tell that the temperature dropped
I was just going to come on here and mention the "swamp cooler". Just a big bowl of ice water placed in front of a fan. It wouldn't cool like a regular ac but it did increase the coolness from the air flow of the fan. I also noticed on the side of the machine in this video had the arrow showing the water line on the side. It seems the water level was much higher than the line on the machine which would affect the results of the cooling but who knows.
My sister says hers works pretty decently to cool the room. Every online review I've seen says they are pure junk and don't work at all. Misting stations definitely work in hot humid climates but air movement seems necessary. Big misting fans for outdoor use work great too even with the high humidity and heat. Those big fans have large water tanks or they hook directly to water hoses. Moving air seems imperative. Shade helps too.
I purchased one since I recently moved into my 2dr coupe and read the reviews and stars etc, I actually like it and keep in mind that I live in Az where it’s way over 110 in the summertime and this thing is like having my car ac on, it’s super cold, I soak the filter then stick it in my ice chest every morning and at night I pop it in and use ice instead of water so it last a bit longer. It stays plugged into my jackery and sleep a little over 6hrs and it stays cool and even cold in the morning…in Az so it’s got my vote.
What if I can't get ice water ? I'm I allowed to use just water
Well I just purchased this and I love it. I sleep with it on my nightstand in my face. I wet amd froze the filter, and used it for the first time last night It works perfect for my needs. What I don't like is the light, I had to use tape to cover what I could. I love a dark room while sleeping. Overall I love it
I agree, it works good for what it is. You obviously had reasonable expectations with it unlike so many others that think it's a replacement for an air conditioner.
Just bought one, works great when I'm sitting at the couch or at a desk area and have it on me. I'm currently sleeping on the couch and it is perfect for just blowing on myself. No it won't cool down an entire room but can help you feel regulated for when you want to sit by it and feel the coolness.
Ditto here in Texas it gets hot but when close & pointed at you can feel the difference.
@@RUSTY-A-L I live in East Texas and need some extra relief because other people in our house can't handle cold and I am burning up.
It's a swamp cooler -- a very old idea. It evaporates water, which cools the air by removing the latent heat of vaporization of the water from of the air. This is Thermodynamics 101. I doubt very much that it will work very well in places like Birmingham, Alabama, where it approaches 100% humidity, because you can't evaporate water into air that is already saturated with water. However, in dry places like Las Vegas, Nevada, it should work exceedingly well. However, you might want to keep the space you use it in pretty well ventilated, or else you could create a mildew problem when all of that evaporated water starts condensing out on the cooler surfaces of the room.
Well put.

I tend to have skin allergy during Spring especially. My skin will turn very dry. I started using it and it really helped my skin.
I was given this as a gift for my office because we have no air. I found it easy to use and it works great on my desk. The only downfall is the condensation that builds up on the adjustable shutters on the front and it leaks down onto my desk. So just need to put a tray or towel underneath to catch the condensation. Along with freezing the cartridge once soaked over night - I filled the water try with ice cubes before putting the water in. Takes a full 16 oz bottle almost and during the 9 hour day - filled it 2 1/2 times. But overall, Concept is great, it does work and keeps you cool but needs some adjustments.
adjustments? you mean get a real swamp cooler and exhaust fan installed?
People in the Mojave Desert in California and throughout the Southwest are very familiar with this method, except our Evaporative Coolers are mounted on the roof and pump 3-5,000 cubic feet of air per minute through the house. You might pay $4-600 for the cooler but it's well over 100 degrees outside and in the 70-degree range in the house. You simply turn it on, it takes the hot, dry air from outside, pumps it into the house. You open some windows here and there to let that 3-5000 cubic feet of air back outside again. The thing I like about "swamp coolers" is how healthy your skin becomes in the summer months. No dry, scratchy elbows and knees, etc. We look at this demonstration as a simple downsized copy of the big coolers, made in some third-world country for pennies on the dollar. Swamp coolers don't work where it's humid, you're just adding to the problem. They work in hot, dry places only. The electric bill is not crazy. You're paying for a blower fan and a little water pump. With this silly thing you're paying "moocho" dollars for a little plastic toy.
Thank you ..just bought a similar model on sale for 40 $ ,wanted to check reviews before deciding to keepit ...
I fully understood it was for close range only as it shows on the box .Folks expecting a 50 $ mini to cool a ehoke room need to give their heads a shake ..

Exactly! Expecting something like this to be a substitute a/c for a big area is crazy. When using ice water and freezing the filter, it blows cool air which is exactly what it's supposed to do.
I have an Artic Air. It does what I expected it to do. I live in Seattle where air conditioning is not necessarily an amenity in apartment life. Similar units are going for double the price of the Artic Air.
But this little unit keeps me cool on a warm night. The low setting is all I need to stay cool at night and I really don't mind the noise; it's like white noise to me. I usually turn the lights off at night. I am please with the Artic Air.
I live in Seattle as well and I’m literally watching this video because I want to buy one lol does it cool a whole room? Or does it just cool you if you’re sitting in front of it?
Probably in front of it. It's very very small does not replace a conventional air conditioner. I would say it's best for an emergency situation or as a replacement fan while you have an air conditioner running.

Just imagine all the mold that'll collect on that filter, in a high humidity environment.
@@davemerrick8432 Try cold-ish water instead of ice water if you want to cool down for longer periods. Drinking ice cold water only alarms the body to heat up, because you're drastically undercooling your inner body. The near east has been doing this for an eternity, like lukewarm tea for example. The trick or rather idea is to ingest liquid that will cool the body, but not enough to trigger it. Drinking something ice cold does feel good though, but I've been getting used to something between lukewarm and cold for almost like two decades and once you're fine with it and you get over the part where your brain thinks drinking ice cold water is better, you'll notice how much longer the cooling effect lasts and how you won't get those super-heat moments where your body gets this small rush of heat. Of course, it's important to keep hydrating to keep that effect, but it's not like you'd stop hydrating anyway.

Yes I have one of these and it does help keep me cool on the hot days here in Southern California. Fortunately the humidity is very low when it's hot. It won't cool a room but it will cool you if it's blowing on you from about 5 feet or less away. I checked the temp of the air coming out of this cooler and it was 69 degrees when the room was 88. I think it's just about as effective to spray yourself down with a water sprayer and sit in front of a fan. That's evaporative cooling that really cools you off.

Though I've not tried one, I don't think that machine was ever intended to cool a room, I think it is intended to be a personal cooler -- meaning when it's pointed at a person. To think it would cool an entire room is kind of ridic, and the people out there who thought it would cool a room were simply delusional!. It's a personal cooler, not a room cooler!
You have nailed it. I have had one for about five years and couldn't live without it. I don't have regular air conditioner but this one does the trick for me. I carry it from room to room and it's on my nightstand when I go to bed. It is a personal AC and not made to cool a whole room. The filter can be frozen and you can add ice cubes in the water reservoir if you want to.
Exactly. It's a very expensive tiny piece of crap fan. Ads are disgustingly misleading and this company is unethically claiming that it works magic- it doesn't. Don't waste your money!!!!!
@@MyBold-Blossoms I'm embarrassed to admit I fell for it too. Ours arrived broken so I called and they immediately sent out another one, then we disassembled and fixed the first one. So even at 2 for the price of 1, with the "discount" I still wasted my money and feel like a jerk. It's a portable fan, which is nice, but nothing innovative about it 😡.
@@sandihackett3849 I’m thinking to buy it form my semi truck. Since diesel is getting higher. Could help me to sleep at night. Thank you for u comment helps a lot.
for real i dont think people are looking at it with freaking logic, it could probably cool a room down but probably a 210 sqft like they have in japan, china or new york like the size of an attic anything bigger its a no go.
IT WORKS AMAZING HERE IN TUCSON. AND IN PINAL COUNTY ARIZONA. I HAVE A 6' X 12' CARGO TRAILER CONVERSION TO A SMALL CAMPER IN THE DESERT. THIS COOLS DOWN MY 72 SQ FT. LIVING SPACE, UNDER A SHADE ROOF.
I been looking for sonething like this for the fact that my dad gets cold at 78 degrees and i burn up. I like how you mention on how you wanted to give a fair review with out any influences of any other reviews. Everytime i cone across im looking for and i look at the spects i glance at the ratings and reviews but then i go to youtube for my final conclusions. Dont know if i would want this product for the fact it is a bit noisy but i do believe it what you say it does. I have a sunbeam early 2000s model and says it has a fan and low and high heating fans and its small about the same as the arctic chill not as rectangular in length but it does heat up my room like in 5 to 10 mins. And it gets hot after that. I bring it to the dinning room for my dad and it heats it up about the same. So yeah its amazing how something that small can work that good but the fan part not too impressed doesnt give out air or nothing.
I've had my Arctic Air a few seasons now, and I think it's great! I generally use it when I'm watching TV, but even on the hottest of days, I usually turn it off after a while because it gives me a chill (especially if I keep replenishing the ice!) If you use it for sleeping on a hot night, don't use ice, and keep the fan on "low," or Arctic Air will soon have you shivering--guarenteed! I haven't used actual air conditioning for a few years now, so Arctic Air has saved me tons of money! Please keep in mind that this little machine isn't meant to cool an entire room; it's only meant as a space cooler. But it's very effective at what it does! I give it a big thumbs up!
Is this a paid post?
Not for whole house or whole room cooling but handy as personal cooler and can be life saving if the house a/c goes out until fixed/replaced and helpful for those with hot flashes. Works much better in dry/low humidity desert regions. Clogs up easily especially if have hard water and not easy to reach the drip hole or to find something small enough but stiff enough to unclog it (earlier models before the Pure Chill model)-- so if have hard water best to stick to using distilled water. Basically it has equivalent of a computer case type fan. NEVER leave water in it sitting and stagnating -- health risk!
You'd be better off laying in the bath tub, and save yourself a lot of electricity and money.
I can fart harder than the little fan these device come with..
A very nice and well-thought out review! Very helpful review! While it "works" on cooling a person within a couple of feet maybe, it probably won't cool anything like a room. I couldn't see a family of 3 - 4 huddled together with "cooler" air blowing on their faces as being effective. I likely wouldn't buy it based on your candid review. But thank you All American Mack!
It WILL, however, cool down a bedroom with the bedroom door shut, and will cool down a small bathroom pretty fast. Door closed is the secret. I have one and it's great. I recommend it.
No it can cool a room. I run a 1000w power supply on my gaming system, which is water-cooled and that triple fan radiator makes for a toasty office. Without this little evaporative cooler after a short gaming session I would need to be dragged out of here... here in Africa we have a dryer heat than most. We also don't normally have air conditioning in our homes because we're not delicate flowers. My office is easily the coolest room in my house even mid gaming session thanks to what is essentially just a knock-off version of this cooler.
@@VegasLady81 I've tried it into my car (a small space) and is doing NOTHING-it's not even working like a small fan!!! STOP LYING!!!
Actually when you first had it right on it, the temp still went up 1 degree so it didn't keep it from rising at all.You started at 73 and when you checked it after 5 min, it had gone up to 74.

I live in a dryer area and I use little swamp coolers like this a lot. They're a nice little spot cooler to avoid using A/C in a whole room when I just need it pointed at me when I'm at my desk. Like all evaporative solutions for cooling it only works well in low humidity. This is not going to cool down a room of any size, it's only good for cooling down how I feel and make the worst of summer more bearable without A/C running. What I hate are the advertisers that call these air conditioners and mislead the uninitiated into thinking they can cool a room down significantly.
Yeah....like in the commercial...cooling down a room a guy is welding in!!! 🤣
AC can also mean air cooler
you should try a commercial unit that is paired with a high-mounted exhaust fan- you won't even miss the a/c
This should be commonsense, you have to do a load calculation to size a HVAC system to run a building. Artic air machine is the size of humidifier or vapor machine, it's not going to decrease room temp. The sensible heat will decrease which is the heat you body is or were feeling.
I like the video ad that suggests that the inventor was a teenager who came up with this invention to help school kids study and concentrate because the AC didn't work in their school , so this was the solution .🙄
i have one of these, and i really like how it works. Its not a room cooler, its a personal space cooler. So at a desk, or next to your bed, it will keep you cooler. i really like how it works, and on days when my room reaches near 100 degrees, it keeps my personal space about 20 degrees cooler when aimed right at myself. For me, totally worth the 40$

Great and honest review man! I have thought about getting one of these and put it in the bathroom. Which I could eliminate the window a/c I currently have in there. For $40.00 I think it is worth a shot. Also I live in the Arizona desert where it is a little drier. So maybe this portable cooler could help more in the dryer environment.
Yeah, here in Toronto it is not so much the heat, but the very humid days that sucks the life out of me. I've always figured these devices would just add to the humidity and make it worse. I use a dehumidifier to get the humidity back down to around 50% in the apartment. And that helps immensely when we get days of 35C+ humidex.
I lived in Phoenix in the 60s and our house had a swamp cooler on the roof.
It did a great job cooling the house and we used the run off water from it to water the back yard...just moved the hose around.
I get dry heat here, and I open a window a tiny bit for the swamp cooler effect. I get to rest in the heat. I only have the volume inside the camper to cool, so it's the right size.

It was 98° yesterday and I was comfortable. Today will be 100°.

Great review. In my experience, 2 of those did keep us cool when we sat near it. Fan qasnt as effective, it just spinned the hot air.
But it is not an AC replacement . Just for emergencies. My room was 86 degrees, and AC was down.
I use a regular fan in my small home office. When it is on and I am within about 2 feet, (which you were in your video) I feel my regular fan is cool feeling to me and refreshing. A good measure for apples to apples would be to place a hand or better a thermometer to measure the difference between the two.
The sound it makes will have me sleeping like a baby I think I want one
I live in Colorado, so these work well out here as long as it's under 80 degrees. Right now I'm working on converting it into a humidifier by adding a part on the fan area.

The more moisture there is in the air, the air traps more heat. Just something to keep in mind.
Thank you for doing this review. You did a great job showing what this product was capable of doing. Obviously this product will not replace an air conditioner but for someone on limited income trying to cool off a small area then this product may not be a bad investment.
It's pure junk!!! Don't waste your money!
Yep!!!
Not junk. Just has a specific use so if you buy it with big expectations then you'll be disappointed. I'm sleeping on the couch and have it blowing on me, helps a ton and actually isn't that loud compared to a regular fan
I have one, have used it about a year in the hottest part of the summer. This does work, the trick is to make sure to keep the water as cold as possible in the top pan. Adding ice constantly really helps. Just make sure that you don't over fill it. As the air conditioner runs, the water level will drop -- just keep adding ice and ice cold water. These are good for small rooms or for a small space directly where you are sitting. This wouldn't cool a huge room, but it will cool the general area where you are.
I did.
I do the same with a little bigger one that fits more ice during the night. I'm in California so it does work better, if you live in Florida where humidity is sky high just buy a fan.

While not common in my neck of the woods in the HVAC trade we generally call larger versions of these swamp coolers and they do work well especially for their energy consumption however they do significantly affect humidity in the space being cooled.
then they weren't set up properly- there needs to be an exhaust, as well.
@@tommurphy4307 you can ventilate all you want direct evaporative coolers will raise the humidity of the air passing through them and increase the humidity of the air, there is nothing you can do about that it is just how they work. No matter how much humid air you remove more air comes in through the cooler and picks up more moisture it is just how they work and it is the reason AC sent these the way of the dinosaur in most places
@@keldon_champion the exhaust vent configuration precludes humidity buildup and condensation- thats very easy to understand. theyre very popular here in san diego county (non-coastal) and A/C isn't sending them anywhere- especially with our high electric rates. we have the highest rates in the country. a large commercial or shop building can have lots of issues with humidity depending on whats in there, but the main goal is comfort for those who have to spend all day there- proper exhaust ventilation is crucial to the efficiency of the system.
also i wanted to point out that these devices are not all that similar to swamp cooler systems- these things nebulize the water into the air flow while swamp coolers use capillary media to bring moisture into contact with the air flow- a big difference especially regarding how much moisture is added to the air. if these things were sized similarly to a commercial cooling unit they would put out FAR more humidity....our system at the car dealer where i worked had a diverter door and it could bring outside air in or recirculate on drier or hotter days.
Thank you for your review, I think I’ll passed the idea of buying one. That was very helpful. Specially when you tried it with the thermometer. 👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks for taking time to review. Maybe in a southwestern 'dry heat' climate this could work well. Here in Florida I definitely don't want to add more humidity to our 6 month summer and during the dry season it is cool enough not to need AC or small coolers like this. Half the reason we run the AC in the south is to prevent mold growth. This puts water right back in the air.
Right you are! Gainesville is staggeringly hot right now and of course, the AC took a dump. I need to replace the entire AC in my house. I thought this might work just to cool off the area where I generally sit, but it's just junk. I wasted $40.00. Amazon is getting this thing back.

I like this Arctic Air unit to cool down a room, I think it does help. I think it's worth buying to cool a small to medium-sized room, but I wouldn't expect it to cool more than one such room at a time. Also, I live in the arid southwestern US, so the slight humidifying really helps. I also freeze my filter overnight and use chilled water from the fridge in the reservoir. But I like your idea of using actual iced water; will do that next time :)

@@tommurphy4307 Haha. No.
Frozen water bottles are the way to do recirculating coolers. I have about a third of my freezer filled with water bottles (it also helps the freezer efficiency if you don't stock a full freezer of food). I find that eight to twelve 12oz (350ml) water bottles freeze in my freezer about half as quickly as they melt in front of a summer fan. (And I put them under a light blanket with me while I sleep, too.) But the critical limit is the efficiency of my freezer. If you used a hundred bottles at a time, you could cool a room in no time. But the time to refreeze those bottles lets the heat spike again long before you can continue to cool. So I have twenty four bottles frozen and switch out only eight or twelve of them at a time, depending how hot it is. One liter of ice, melting from -10c to +10c requires about 400 Kj of heat. It depends on the size of your room and how hot it is, but my room is only 27m² and it will cool about 4 or 5 °c in the first hour, and no more than another degree every half hour or so until maybe +15°c, where it struggles to cool further and only maintains the temp.
Thank you for posting and all the work that this entails! 🙏 how bad is the humidity where you are?
@@wallyworld817 Not too bad, so the evaporation from the condensation on the bottles helps a bit.
Last year, we had several weeks of +100°f (38°c) heat, spiking for a few days above 115° (46°c) , where we normally only get two or three weeks a year of +90° (32°c) weather. I didn't have an A/C, so I tried to figure it out. I tried all those gadgets from videos, but those only work to keep a cool breeze on you. An elderly person would do much better surrounded by frozen water bottles (put in thick socks to prevent frostbite). Best to hole up in a small interior room (a different room from the freezer, if at all possible), and let the frozen water bottles thaw in front of a fan.

Did it cool down a small room for you,?
It didn't help on the treadmill, but maybe that's because the activity is too intense. It does pump out cold air but I found that it has to be really close to feel the effect. As previously mentioned ice cubes and freezing the filter helps.
@@MrBritcanuck how does air pass through frozen filter?
@@805hondajdm The filter still has holes in it for air to pass through. We decided to return ours. It had to be positioned really close to feel the benefit and we drew the conclusion that it really didn't seem any better than a regualr fan at half the price.
Be advised since this is a mini Swamp Cooler it requires the change of state of water vapor to a gas. This is accomplished because DRY air allows water vapor to change state by evaporating using the ambient heat from the conditioned space. Thus the heat is removed by causing the change of state of the water vapor to a gas. If you are trying to get cool air in a HUMID environment the evaporation of the water vapor is not efficient and therefore it will require a regular refrigerant based A/C to help cool you.
It’s not water vapor to gas. Gas refers to a vapor above its critical point so that it could no longer be condensed by pressure. The actual phase change going on here is liquid water to water vapor, which is a process that absorbs heat.

evap coolers or swamp coolers work great in dry climates. So in Montana or Wyoming it will work better, you can even improve it further by increasing evaporation with a dehydrator, or keeping windows and doors open to keep dry air moving. It's a tricky game to play but once you figure it out it works pretty well and is way cheaper to run than an AC.

Adding ice water makes a hot difference. This is more so if you are sitting at a desk In an office at home a small space
I had it and it really works, provided the air humidity is low,or it won't have any effect. Only problem is that it shouldn't go dry,or the water pump will burn. Mine burnt during the night.
or the fan bushings fail because of the water- what's a mother to do??
There's a reason they are called swamp coolers. The only time I have ever seen one do any good was when I was a kid and my folks had one that attached to the passenger window of our car. We were on a trip to Nevada and inland Southern California in summer, where the extra humidity wasn't unwelcome. If you use one in a house in addition to a conventional air conditioner it just makes the air conditioner work harder and waste energy removing the extra humidity you are adding.
lowriders use those and they usually fill them with ice and water....trust me- extra humidity is UNWELCOME here in Socal, too.
Swamp cooler...thats how we survived in California back in the day.. it was ugly and huge...sat tall on the roof...it did its job. All 4 of us slept on the floor under it...lol
Correct. 100% spot on…
I got one last year, I work nights so sleeping during the day in the summer is a nightmare. I tried fans but all they did was blow warm air round the room, i got one of these and I will say despite its faults it worked much better.
The thing to remember is that you cannot cool air without displacing heat. If there is nowhere for heat to go, then the air will not be cooler. This unit will cool the air IF you put the filter in the freezer first. The frozen filter will absorb the heat and blow cool air, until the ice has melted. That is the only way this will cool any air, and even so, it'll only last a very short period.
It's great for your personal space such as at your desk when on a computer. It was very hot in Brooklyn the other day, and my room doesn't have an AC, but with a small fan blowing to the left of me, and the AA on the right, I was very comfortable. I could concentrate on my work, and I wasn't sweating. I have no issue with the noise level, and I was very impressed with how well it worked for me. As long as one doesn't expect it to be a mini AC that does all an AC unit can do, one shouldn't be too disappointed with the results.

Was in west Texas once where i visited a repair facility that had eight large evaporative coolers that carried outside air through a medium with water running through it, and into the building, cooling a large workspace. It was much cooler inside there. The humidity in West Texas is generally very low and that is the reason this concept works there. In Denver I visited an office where they had purchased a cooler that was recirculating water and operating like the swamp coolers described above but did not bring in outside air. The results were it would cool briefly but soon it would raise the humidity in the room to the point where it was still hot but now very humid and muggy also. The fact is these things will cool some but only in humidity levels under 70%. The lower the humidity the better they work.
the difference is the repair place had a properly-configured swamp-cooler system. the air has to come from somewhere else and has to be sucked out to somewhere else, too. it can make a HUGE difference...
Got mines from Walmart. Works really well. Kept my condo super cool, and my light bill down. These negative comments must be people who bought the replica 😆
The humidity in my area was 95 yesterday and 90 today. You can't evaporate water when the air is already saturated. This won't work where I live.
