"I want to be a kinder, gentler person. I want to be... a stronger person."
This line is one of my favorites in any fiction. There's a plethora of examples in media where strength is equated to power, respect and the "no fucks given" philosophy. That a man's worth comes from his ability to be "better" than his fellow men. Vinland challenges that perspective, proposing that true strength comes from your ability to care for others and create. To be able to leave the Earth in a better state than you found it, even if you contributed to it's ruin in the past, it's never too late to start making amends.

it made me feel hope for the first time in a very long time, i had always felt as though i could never undo what i had done in the past, and that is entirely true, what i have done will always remain a fact, but proving that i can do everything in my power to make it better is what truly matters. creating instead of destroying, caring instead of hating. it takes so much more strength to truly care for the world and people around you.
who i was doesn't define who i am. maybe for others around me, but i know it's not true of myself. making amends and moving on is so much better than giving up and giving in. only wished i had realized it sooner.

I’m still very early on in reading it, but I also appreciate how Hell’s Paradise has a similar theme of men NOT having to be unthinking, unfeeling vessels of anger and violence. Being emotionally vulnerable and honest with ourselves and caring for others is strength, and Gabimaru has started to attain that through his marriage but can’t really define that yet

@Latvian Dragon That's pretty silly. This was a time of conflict and change for the Norse, and not everyone would have been very violent. It's also hard to imagine that some people wouldn't have suffered from ptsd.
The original Vinland Sagas included the Christianization of Greenland and Vinland. So there is precedent in the source text.
Art is meant to show the world that can exist. Showing how war affected Thorfinn, and how death and violence effects everyone in the story, is within that artistic vision and is very well done.

It's a huge manga by the author of Planetes. Curious how little attention you serve out to those people following it, just for being ouside the US iron curtain bubble.
Curious, but not uncommon, USA is very hostile even to Spanish speakers watching Saint Seya, to let them learn civics in school in their native language, let alone anyone learning Japanese.
Instead, USA has no official language but still barely any schools for the unofficial ones. The network to IMPORT foreign art is not very solid, when all you ahve is fractured minds doing shooting drills in Uvalde, and who have to translate their day in school to share it with their parents. Not even immigrants but people who were there when it was annexed like Ukraine.
Your life that you apply, is the political forces you fund. And the application form USA is HEAVY.

I think that many people do not understand the meaning of this phrase.
"I have no enemies" does not refer to the fact that no one wants to attack you, insult you or be against you, it refers to the value that you give to those actions, the fact that you should be a better person, not respond and break the cycle of violence, I have no enemies is like saying "I don't hate anyone", your enemies are decided by you, it is something metaphorical, not literal.

There will always be enemies, there will always be extremes. There will always be unforgivable.
What should matter is understanding the grey parts, and not being driven by emotions. But it is also important to recognize the extreme evil and not be such a fool like not recognizing that you are being exploited and being destroyed by what you perceive as "not enemies". Last of Us 2 parades that philosophy around and shoves it in your face without actually taking the time to do the heavy lifting necessary to properly convey it to it's players. Vinland spent it's entire first season lulling it's viewers into a false sense of direction showing how cool and epic Thorfinn's journey of revenge was at times while at the same time planting the seeds necessary for the massive tonal shift that is season 2 where it then hyper focuses on the consequences of war and violence. It's an intended tonal whiplash that manages to be a wake up call to the viewers who aren't just there for an action show. Storytelling done right, making you reevaluate the story so far with a new perspective instead of spoon feeding ideas.

Christianity play a big role in the series. While Thorfinn isn't necessarily religious, it does serve as a motivation for some other Norsemen in the story that also want to build something better. There is a clear contrast between the violent Viking tradition and the more "love" focused medieval Christianity

I'll just leave this here. Since Vinland saga is a work of art and art is subject for interpretation, I think I will give my own here.
I have no enemies is an ideal imo. It's something you may know is unobtainable. It just seems so unlikely especially the way we are now. Warring in comment sections like the disagreements we brook here will somehow affect us personally.
For my personal journey I think adapting some form of pacifism is useful. I mean if say I was attacked of course I will defend myself. If someone attacks someone near and dear to me I will then try and pursue justice. But I will not actively seek out conflict nor hurt others who aren't even involved. I think having no enemies entails not making any more than what you already have.
I may be rambling here but I can say that while I don't have any enemies per se. I can be more mindful of how I deal with people so I won't make more enemies.

I love this anime/manga it’s my favorite for its writing and characters and what it teaches it’s viewers is very special.
It’s awesome to see the series getting its due love from people now, not without its hate but if people go into it expecting an action anime they will be very disappointed as the main focal point is through the characters and writing as Makoto Yukimura has implied. The philosophies in how someone can change and be a “true warrior” through loving and appreciating life rather than squandering it by killing and hating is something truly special.

Turn the other cheek is about submission to evil as what it actually is is what would you do if you are slapped turn the other cheek and offer it to the slapper if somebody were to rob you and take your coat give them your shirt too etc. It's literally telling you to play a good rousing game of front hand back hand.

Shonen is easier to market, so authors purposely dumb down the first few bits to introduce people to the manga and/or anime, and once it acquires a following, that’s when things hit the fan.
