I had the Plumes when it first came out and it sounded great on bass, only issue was that it sucked the low end so it went to a guitarist friend. They didn't need to change anything, just add a blend knob. Shame they haven't done that as I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.
i didn’t realize how much i missed that intro! thanks for reviewing this, i’ve been looking for a good overdrive pedal but now i don’t know if i need the pedal or the baby groot in my life…
Love this kind of a video coming from you Janek - having iconic bassist, educator, musician, artist to showcase new pedal takes this classic format (today dominated by some random, mediocre bassists) to entirely next level. Absolute pleasure to watch + this makes the best ad for the Blumes I can think of being a bassist (and ofc your fan) myself :)
I absolutely love this pedal as an always on clean boost, it keeps definition on the low notes giving this edge of breakup feel of an old tube amp ....
Yes that intro is great I remember that, just spotted that it was a pool table lol. Some interesting tones, so key to make sure bass distortion and breakup isn't destroying the fundamental and glad to see that being preserved even on the darker settings. Lav mic needs EQing sounds muffled maybe? Or just use full mic positioned out of shot if just sat in one spot rather than moving around? Good to see smashing out the content!
They omit it because it's not needed... blend knobs are not magic. Some circuits do very well with them, some don't. Just sticking a blend on a circuit does not automatically make it great for bass, and conversely, there are some great bass circuits with no blend knob needed.
@@jdjk7Agreed. I actually tend to really dislike blend knobs. The only blend knob I’ve ever liked has been on my Amptweaker Lefebvre Tight Fuzz that only blends in clean lows. Straight blend knobs, for the sounds that I go for and how I play are terrible.
@@jdjk7bassist who designs pedals here- you are dead on, if you add a clean blend or clean, low pass, etc, a lot of the time the harmonics and tonal character of a drive / dirt / fuzz disappears completely, left with this weird combination of an overly plain clean sound and this crappy fizzy sound over the top. Sometimes there are ways around it, and tricks to pull, but even when it’s theoretically possible, it’s not always reasonable to add all of that in terms of size, associated cost, circuit complexity, you name it. Bassists have convinced themselves that they constantly need the biggest fattest lows, but in reality, there’s a huge tonal pallet that a lot of guys miss out on. I think it’s a wiser approach to just take a sound as it is and see what you can do with it, and if you truly find that the lack of low end just doesn’t work for you, then, maybe that pedal just doesn’t work for you 🤷♂️ . Having a clean blend for the lows is not as much of an ‘obvious panacea’ the people pretend it is
There are also other ways to do a wet/dry mix within a signal chain. If you find a pedal you love but want to blend some clean signal with it, things like the Xotic X-Blender exist for just that scenario.
YESSSS!!!! I've loved the breakup of the Plumes on bass since the day of its release, and I'm excited to have a version with more low end so I'm not working to keep my low end. Massive WIN!
Damn you EQD! Take more of my money! I'm a total fanboy, Jamie Stillman is an evil mad scientist. The o.g. "Plumes" has been a fixture on my board for the last couple of years. On certain gigs, it's been an always on pedal. Also makes a great boost. Definitely gotta check this out!
Awesome video, as always. Just got one of these pedals and they are great. (Also, look out for those DJI microphones; they do Chinese-Israeli surveillance. Find US or British kit)
@@janekgwizdala I remember from one of your vlogs a few years ago you were making some headway with a film score project (on solo bass with effects if I remember rightly!) and you took us to see a meeting on the project. I'm guessing it didn't materialise in the end. I think you would be great at this, including scoring for and perhaps playing other instruments too. Maybe in 2024!
When I saw the over the top reel on Instagram that EQD put out to announce this pedal, while it was indeed the single greatest advertisement I had ever seen, I thought that it was possibly a joke. Woke up at 4am to feed the baby this morning and was pleasantly surprised to see it in stock on the Sweetwater website. Instantly ordered. After watching this demo I’m even more excited for it to arrive. Janek, if you see this comment, I’ve been wanting to ask you, what has been your experience putting octave pedals in front of your Woolly Mammoth? The MXR BOD is my go to octave pedal, but if you have one, you should try putting it in front of your Mammoth. Something very strange/terrible happens - volume gets cut in half and the fuzz goes from rip roaring to sounding squashed and terrible. Any ideas for a possible solution?
Nice one! I'm not on instagram so I haven't seen the ad you're talking about, but it sounds like they spent some money on marketing for this release! The woolly mammoth is just one of those pedals that's really hard to contain. I use it when I want total chaos and unpredictability. When I want something controllable and repeatable, I avoid it at all costs.
Really enjoy you got a earthquaker video! I absolutely love them, my Astral Destiny is my favorite pedal!? Have you ever used that one or own it? What we’re you using at the end of the video?
its killing some of the sub stuff around 50 and emphasizing stuff around 100, kind of a bummer cause i was hoping they'd make something like this, but sadly still not useable for bass imo
Sound is subjective of course. One person's usable is another person's fail. But to say the pedal is unusable for bass is very far from reality. Having played it, and remember I'm not getting paid to say any of this, the response from the pedal for bass is spot-on. Finger style, processed, with a pick... it does it all. I, like most bass players who want to exist in the right place of a mix, am not looking for a ton of sub push around 50. That sub bump makes it very difficult to do anything on stage in the real world of working as a bass player in my experience.
Everyone has different philosophy. But in my travels of impatience its better 2 save your 99 dollars and got a decent pedal with a blend knob. You be happy in the end. Anyone interested in any slightly used cheep pedals.🤓
1. Watch the video until the end for all of the information. 2. I think you probably clicked on a video about gear because, like me, you’re a fan of gear. If this was a true ad, I’d be getting something return for it besides a free pedal. I’m not. It’s a demo video to help you make informed decisions about equipment.
$99 Not sure why everyone is being so coy. No good falling in love with a pedal that costs $500 and you've no budget. Personally I think the Plumes sounds great as is. Will wait for some to hit ebay in a few months that have been played once out of the box.
Nice to see the Pedal Studio back!
Janek this stop-motion pedal intro is fantastic!

Gotta have a Groot!
please, bring back the pedal show full time! thanks Janek
It’s coming. Planning on weekly episodes after the NAMM show in a couple of weeks, when I should be getting a bunch of new pedals…
this intro is legendary
Yes! The pedal show is back. Happy new year!

Absolutely fantastic presentation, different scenarios, this is how you do a demo. I love the intro, it's simply great, never gets old.
It’s awesome! I just got mine today.

Best demo of it yet.
Great sounds, yet a blend knob is necessary for me to buy and use it. It’s a shame so many great pedals omit this simple knob.
My problem with the Aguilar Aggro pedal too….

Mannn your channel is so complete for bass stuff. Love it 🔥
This was a great video Janek, long time fan, love the new format! Killer sounds

Just the video I needed! What filter is Janek using?
Is it possible to have a discret overdrive as the Darkglass Vintage Micotubes?
Love pedal studio!

Hi Janek!
Have you ever thought about going for film scoring???
Always been a big fan of the medium. I'm always open to trying a scoring project.

I don't have the Astral Destiny. I was using a bunch of reverb and maybe some pitch shifting at the end of the video? I honestly don't remember...
Great video
Great demos which really show what it can do.
Also, in your intro the MXR bass overdrive makes an appearance. What do you tnink of it ?
not great... 🤷♀
Sent mine back the same day, i thought it sounded awful with my spector and no useable tones, shame.
4:10 that's so goddamn nasty! Seems like I'm going pedal shopping (again).
What's that filter?
Auto wah in the hx stomp
Sounds really unique!
99$ for americans, 140 plus shipping in Europe. Gonna end up paying twice as much for one

A bass pedal without a blend knob is pretty pointless these days. Too many other options out there with one.
USED ONE ON OUR NEW ALBUM

Why would you need a blend knon if the pedal is designed for bass already?
🤌🏻
So why it a INSANE value? might have gone over my head but I did not hear price mentioned. So basically I just clicked on a commercial.
