  • The End of The Movie
    Starring Josh Groban
    Featuring Rachel Bloom
    SO THIS IS THE END OF THE MOVIE
    WHOA WHOA WHOA
    BUT REAL LIFE ISN’T A MOVIE
    NO NO NO.
    YOU WANT THINGS TO BE WRAPPED UP NEATLY
    THE WAY THAT STORIES DO.
    YOU’RE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS
    BUT ANSWERS AREN’T LOOKING FOR YOU.
    BECAUSE LIFE IS A GRADUAL SERIES OF REVELATIONS
    THAT OCCUR OVER A PERIOD OF TIME
    IT’S NOT SOME CAREFULLY CRAFTED STORY
    IT’S A MESS AND WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE.
    IF YOU SAW A MOVIE THAT WAS LIKE REAL LIFE
    YOU’D BE LIKE “WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT MOVIE ABOUT?”
    IT WAS REALLY ALL OVER THE PLACE
    LIFE DOESN’T MAKE NARRATIVE SENSE.
    NUHUH
    WE TELL OURSELVES THAT WE’RE IN A MOVIE.
    WHOA WHOA WHOA
    EACH ONE OF US THINKS WE GOT THE STARRING ROLE.
    ROLE ROLE ROLE.
    BUT THE TRUTH IS SOMETIMES YOU’RE THE LEAD
    AND SOMETIMES YOU’RE AN EXTRA
    JUST WALKING BY IN THE BACKGROUND
    LIKE ME,
    JOSH GROBAN!
    BECAUSE LIFE IS A GRADUAL SERIES OF REVELATIONS
    THAT OCCUR OVER A PERIOD OF TIME
    SOME THINGS MIGHT HAPPEN THAT SEEM CONNECTED
    BUT THERE’S NOT ALWAYS A REASON OR RHYME
    PEOPLE AREN’T CHARACTERS
    THEY’RE COMPLICATED
    AND THEIR CHOICES DON’T ALWAYS MAKE SENSE
    THAT BEING SAID IT’S REALLY MESSED UP
    THAT YOU BANGED YOUR EX- BOYFRIEND’S DAD
    OHHHHH
    NEVER BANG YOUR EX-BOYFRIEND’S DAD.

    The fact that Nathaniel is still waiting for her, even after knowing what she's done, and knowing that he's in a position where he's allowing himself to be used, makes my heart break just a little more with that alligator hug.

    • @chrysalis33
      @chrysalis33 6 років тому +341

      Nathaniel's story is heartbreaking. It brings back memories of when Greg brushed off Rebecca's feelings, except this is so much worse because Nathaniel NEVER felt emotions before this, or acknowledged them, at least, whereas Rebecca was so easily swayed by Josh right after. The alligator hug is EVERYTHING, though. Whoever thought of that little detail deserves a cookie!

    • @problemeliminator
      @problemeliminator 6 років тому +194

      Remember that Nathaniel had no problem trying to kill Josh's grandfather, that meant nothing to him - he lacks a moral grounding. So he probably doesn't see how Rebecca's past and current actions are wrong, either. I don't think he's dedicated to her, or behaving selflessly (he has never developed a capacity for that). I don't think it's that simple, not with this show.

    • @janellwilliams2394
      @janellwilliams2394 6 років тому +78

      problemeliminator I think his lack of seeing it is part of him sorting through his own issues, or starting that path. Kind of like Rebecca with Greg. It was a breakthrough moment, that opened her up to other choices.
      Also, I definitely think he's going to have to address his issues before this is over. But I agree that it is almost unfair to Rebecca's character to have the person she ends up with after this, no matter how long it is for, to not be someone who was here for all of this. I think they will find each other, and it will be a moment of character growth for Rebecca as she sees that whatever they have isn't healthy for him. And a moment of growth for him as he learns how to not be selfish, genuinely, but takes it too far.
      Then again, life doesn't make narrative sense. So maybe there will be other twists that change that path (probably). But I definitely think, all said and done, at the end of CXG Rebecca will not be in a committed relationship. And if she is, it won't be with another main character.

    When watching this episode I know we were all to think 'how could rebecca sleep with greg's dad?????' but all I could think was how could this old man sleep with his son's ex girlfriend that he saw was in a vulnerable position and also so much younger than him. Like super creepy.
    I get that Rebecca has messed up this episode but Greg's dad comes out of this situation much worse than Rebecca for the whole sex incident. He was in a better mental place than her and should have said no if she offered to have sex with him

    • @TheRulerofEarth4444
      @TheRulerofEarth4444 6 років тому +314

      I was thinking that too but then this song came in and distracted me from that. It brought me back to Rebecca's view point and how she feels about this as opposed to how he should feel bad. It was kinda the perfect place for a song. Kept the focus of the show on our main characters and avoided any messy interactions to get back to that focus. I didn't think about its use as a transition till just now but it was brilliant.

    • @Abby-yq7sr
      @Abby-yq7sr 6 років тому +263

      Honestly though. I feel like if Greg ever finds out though, he's going to be more pissed at his dad. He's going to be mad at Rebecca bc tbh it's kinda a Rebecca thing to impulsively sleep with someone, but I think he knows his dad well enough to know it was a fucked up thing for him to initiate. Especially since the dad played a significant part in persuading Greg to leave Rebecca.

    • @miriamspringett3797
      @miriamspringett3797 5 років тому +93

    • @Isirian
      @Isirian 5 років тому +264

      Glad I'm not the only one to think this. It was fucked up that Rebecca slept with Greg's dad, but exactly like you said, the other way it's worse. The age difference is weird, but that doesn't bother me much, they're both adults. What is creepy is that he saw his son's ex (the ex he hated and wanted to his son to break up with), he saw how vulnerable she was, then rubbed in her face that Greg is essentially doing so much better without her and then goes for it? Who does that?!

    I headcanon that this isn't actually a narration song, it's a conversation song. After leaving Marco's house, Rebecca ran into award-winning singer-songwriter Josh Groban, who was out for a late-night stroll. She rambled a bit about what was going on and he judged her a little but also said the "gradual series of revelations" line before they parted ways.

    Can we discuss how Rebecca's hairstyle always reflects where she is as a person? In NYC it was straight, she enters West Covina and it suddenly becomes curly and bouncy, like how she sees her life changing. And as Season 3 has gone on, it has slowly become extremely unkempt and limp, and is in this episode the most straight we have seen it since the premiere. Also, it still has some curl to it, like she almost went to put in the effort to be the "bubbly, cheerful, and effervecent" WC Rebecca, but she isn't actually there.
    An I the only one noticing this? Any other major hair moments that hit you? Thoughts?

      Her hair is still more on fleek than mine on any regular day...
      Anyway, how do you fit the blond phase after Makey-Makeover in there? It looked good on her, but it was her second lowest point in season two.

    • @janellwilliams2394
      @janellwilliams2394 6 років тому +48

      la cherie I don't think it looking "good" is really what I mean.
      Her hair is well-kept when she is convinced she is okay. It's over the top (the blonde, the black, the times it was so curly and bouncy she looked like she swallowed a can of mousse) when she is on the verge of a breakdown and trying to convince herself she's definitely okay and not crazy.
      When she is more grounded and down to earth -- like in this scene, or in Tapped that Ass, or after the non-wedding -- and is realizing the reality of her life, her hair is much more natural, softer, and less full. This is the most natural her hair has been (minus the dye) since the show began. Not NYC straight, not "I'm perfectly okay and life is a fairytale in WC!" curly.

    I'm going to go on a rant here because I have no one to talk to about this show...
    So, first I found that this episode was truly wonderful in the respect that everyone is dealing with the some type of "crazy" aspect of themselves. From Rebecca's tragically hilarious ways to torture Josh just to get his attention, to Paula's realization that she is more of a mother figure to Rebecca than her own children and has to come to the reality that she is a naive and neglecting mother and wife, to Heather coming to find that she isn't as cool as she thought she was and that she actually might be pathetic. There were a lot of truth bombs dropped in this episode and once the smoke cleared people had to deal with the fall out, which you ended up seeing in subtle ways. When Rebecca was rejected by Josh, her response was to go tell him everything he made her do (that he didn't ask for), resulting in her feeling more rejection from her friends because Josh will tell the what she said and that resulted in her turning him into a crazy person. This is all a crazy pattern for Rebecca. So, once the the truth got out about her, her response was to reject everyone that was trying to help her so they didn't have a chance for her too, which also resulted in her feeling more rejection. Rebecca's actions are dependent on the acceptance and the opinions of her peers because of her relationships with her parents, so, when faced with conflicts that makes other disapprove of her or see her in a different light that she isn't casting, she seems immediate validation the only way she knows how -- through sex. (I.e Greg's date when she took the vegan guy home, and Greg's dad in this episode). This is the only way she knows how to cope with such a negative feeling.
    Moreover with Paula, we see even though she is trying to a better mother/wife at the carnival, she results back to previous patterns where Rebecca takes away her attention from being attentive to her family. We can see this when her boys wait for her to be distracted by something (of course Rebecca related) to ask her a question that they know she would generally (or for the audience sake) would disapprove of. She is focused in on Rebecca's life that when met with the news that her son is Valencias drug dealer, she was excited that she started his own business.
    Its seems like most, if not all the characters, are facing repetitive behavioral patterns and truth if who they are and what their ROLE is in this world. It's like every character is having a version of their own crisis, albeit existential or otherwise. This is why this song is so special to the episode.
    I'm looking forward to the upcoming episodes because this whole season is taking a different turn than I expected.
    If you would like to reply to this, please do. I am open For discussion and would love to hear your thoughts 😄.

      Completely agree with your thoughts about this episode. This episode, in particular, made me remember, that we are not supposed to feel happy, after watching this show, we are supposed to contemplate and understand where Rebecca is coming from and evaluate her decisions. This song tells us, the audience, that there might not be a happy ending, just like in the movies and shows we are grown to expect

    I really do like how they paralleled WhiJo & Darryl's relationship w/ Rebecca's bc it just highlights how good they are at open communication & compromise and how Rebecca needs to work on her view of how a relationship really works.
    That being said-- I think WhiJo & Darryl are going to be fine. Both of them are willing to work to be better for each other, so I'm not particularly worried. Rebecca, though, needs help. A shit ton of help.

    God, the beginning of this episode made me want to give Valencia a hug. Like, the rest had some pretty awful stuff thrown at them, but like, what Rebecca said about Valencia was horribly cutting, and it's worse when you consider the pair's history. They worked through a lot of hate to get to be as close as they were before this episode.
    Also, this episode made me cry so hard. I've spent most of this series relating to Rebecca's anxiety, so to see her act the way she did is absolutely horrifying, and makes me feel like I myself fucked up. Although, Rebecca is clearly suffering from more than simple anxiety and depression. Regardless, it made me refill my prescription for my anxiety meds.

    After watching the latest episode I'm really happy that Greg is doing really well; that he's sober, healthy, and in a good relationship. I know people are disappointed because they shipped those two (tbh I did too) but the show was never about shipping people or people being in relationships and I would rather Greg be happy and no longer be on the show than have him suffer in West Covina because I selfishly like him and Rebecca together. Aline and Rachel even said themselves that if Greg were to stay he would have never been able to get better and grow as a person. And hopefully fans will stop harassing everyone with questions about Greg

    So given all the musical numbers in the show are supposed to be representations of how Rebecca see's the world does anyone else imagine that the real world version of this scene was just that she walking down the street and passed Josh Groban (or at least someone who looked a lot like him) and because she was going through an emotional crisis imagined him going off at her for screwing up her life.

    This episode made my heart skip a beat, have a few laughs here and there but in the end made me feel sad and empty. I'll never get tired of saying that CXG is one of the best shows ever! Relatable, entertaining and overall brilliant.

    The singer has so much fun singing in Rebecca's face. I can see him trying not to laugh. It's so cute. Also, he's cute. And the voice is extra nice. I guess he's popular with the ladies.

    I keep coming back to this video. The last couple weeks have been really messed up and I needed this reminder that life doesn't always make narrative sense

    I don't know who I love more... Josh Groban or Santa Ana Wind?

    Thank you, Rachel... somehow this really helps. My ex (whose dad I ,for the record, didn't bang) was just presumed dead very young in an accident and I can't really process any of it and hang on to weird movie and telenovela tropes to keep up hope that he's somehow still alive... I kind of hate myself for my thoughts that all revolve around me, but i guess that is how these things are processed in our brains...
