It's not random at all, it's probably a thought she has all the time when she feels low. When you feel down on yourself, you get all sorts of "random" negative thoughts. Honestly, my thoughts are even darker and worse than this. Though I suspect Rebecca's would be more intense if they weren't on network TV. There's only so much you can get away with on the CW. The show honestly really pushed the boundaries a lot.

this song is genius. it has the over-the-top drama of a broadway song which is comedic but also sort of rings true to just how devastating and blown out of proportion things can feel when you’re in a bad place. i think a lot of us can relate to making these sort of self-loathing generalizations when anything goes wrong, and so there’s comedy but there’s also truth to it. and the last chorus kills me because it’s like she finally breaks and it’s not actually comedic, it’s completely serious and you can feel how hard it is. oof i love this show

It's even worse with the later plot point of Rebecca being diagnosed with BPD, a personality disorder that often manifests as impulsivity, abandonment issues, and emotional instability. If she wandered into self-loathing over her undiagnosed issues and made the assumption that she's struggling because of something intrinsic to her existence rather than a serious mental health issue caused by copious amounts of trauma in her childhood, it would be like someone else's experience but cranked all the way up to 11.

this is seriously how i used to feel a few years back. i was in a really bad mental health state and i just hated everything about myself and kept degrading myself. i also remember when i watched this episode back then and this song came out and i could relate completely. back then i made jokes about it like "lol its totally me" but i also felt really bad and hated myself. i think crazy ex girlfriend is such a funny and fun show, but it also depicts mental health very realistically. i am so glad to be doing much better now and i am so thankful for this show for being there for me when it was so difficult. i dont know if anyones gonna read this but if you are, and youre having mental health problems, please seek professional help, and i know it sounds like a cliche but i promise it does get better. but its important to get help.

i can tell you a few things-
first of all, youre definitely not a lost cause. there will never be a scenario like that. there is always a chance.
second, i doubt that youre a terrible person, because actual terrible people never notice how terrible they are, and they dont shame themselves. unfortunately from both my own experience and seeing many other people deal with the same thing, there is (i guess) symptom of mental health issues that causes you to just despise yourself. ive seen this so many times especially with people who are seriously so pure and caring, so i know that its never an indication that the person is actually secretly evil.
i truly hope that you manage to get help and become healthier as soon as possible (tho it does take time). you deserve to feel well.
please stay strong.

I sometimes think its unneccessary and that I can go by(mental health help and treatment). Kinda hard to admit it in the first place and even connect to new people because Im so in my head. I read somewhere that they were aiming for a "Bernadette Peters in concert" vibe with this, and I have to say they nailed it. Literally the exact thing I thought when I saw her was "She looks like Bernadette Peters about to win Steven Sondheim another lifetime achievement award. Assuming there's one of those he doesn't already have."
The dress is perfect for it. I think I've seen her wearing one that looks very similar, but in purple.

You might relate to the line as a watcher but in the show it's directed at the imaginary concert audience in her own head, and the idea is that this imaginary audience is very familiar with the song, since the song = her feelings and she keeps circling back to feeling this way.

That's exactly how I feel... It's even worse when a friend just cruelly tells me all the things I feel insecure about are justified and really am the horrible person I feel llke I am. This song is so relatable. I came here to listen because I feel like I ruined things with yet another girl I like. And like my mental illness constantly ruins my life and my relationships. I don't even want to say all the negative thoughts I'm having, I'm ashamed and scared of what someone would say to me if they knew what was in my head.
Just wanted yall to know I still feel this way SOMETIMES, but it does infact get easier to rationalize your thoughts because I'm almost 100 percent sure y'all aren't nearly as bad as you think you are. If you worry about your morals and actions you can usually relax on the self judgment.

It's kind of hard to explain why, but self hating thoughts are often childish, because your mind is working double time to name every single way you're terrible. This song perfectly emulates self loathing with a catchy melody, which is why I love it so much.

Greatest song of all time
This song makes me relive the emotions from 15 years ago when I smothered my first boyfriend. I hated myself for driving him away, when he tried so damn hard to give me what I thought I needed. It is so, so cathartic to sing it loud and proud as a flawed human being, now understanding that my issues are my own and while I can accept help, I cannot demand it, and that fairy tale romances are not real. Love is hard and imperfect, and I feel so stupid for shooting myself in the foot by demanding the universe when all I needed was a hug. But I was a dumbass teenager, in pain and in love, and I have grown from that to be accepting that life isn't a sappy fanfic. That's why we still have sappy fanfics. And I love my partner all the more for supporting me in real, practical ways, accepting that he is human like me and fallible, but still comes home to me.
