I typically take for granted that most inexpensive dive watches are not truly 200m rated, but it is put on the dial more as a marketing piece. None the less, it would still be more than sufficient for the 99.9% of us that will never wear these watches in anything more than the shower or pool while on holiday. So as long as you make sure the crown is solidly screwed down you shouldn't have many problems, enjoy wearing it and go make some fun memories with your watch.
I take the WR with a grain of salt on affordable watches.I have a Tandorio Pilot and the nh35 inside is about +5 a day.I liken it to”The reasonably priced car”,which the speedometer says 130mph but won’t break 100 on most.👍🏻🍀
At one time I was a certified diver but I no longer dive. My only concern now is that I can swim with a watch or wash it under running water without damaging the watch. So far all of my AliExpress watches that I have used that way have had no problems so I am happy with them.
a bmw m series is track ready yet it will inevitably break down after 5 laps (my buddy owns one and I've been to many track meets) if you're a diver, spend the money on a Promaster.
Herman is alive. It's been a very long time. Your the only one who has the ability to test water rating. Very interesting stuff. I really like that watch.
I’ve tested swimming this year at the beach in Australia’s hot summer days ,3 steeldives,1 addiesdive, and 2 paganis and had no problems with any of them .
Same, I’ve dived with Steeldive SD1953 and 1970. Addiesdive MY-H3 & H6. Heimdallr SKX. Welly Merck Diver. Seestern S434. Tandorio SKX, Willard, and no date pt5000 homage. None failed, all of them worked perfectly as they should. I dive regularly in the Gulf of Mexico. Everyone takes one video on UA-cam as gold, it’s hilarious.
An excellent job educating the watch community, very much appreciated. Now we know more about: questionable depth ratings > if you buy an inexpensive watch, don't swim with it on (I would never swim with any watch on, what's the point of risking a leak?). That inexpensive watch depth ratings are questionable. And how watches can be tested. Many thanks !
I have always taken the depth claims with a pinch of salt but nevertheless 60m is bloody deep, way more than a sport scuba diver would venture. Free diving? - no prob.
This is the best thriller/action film I could hope for today! Thanks, Gary, and kudus to the neglected Herman. I expected this result, but not the cause. Like yourself, I assumed the glass would shutter at 5 bar or so, as did the Pagani once before, at 3 bar. I guess Tandorio didn't want to waste money on manufacturing two separate dials, one for the stainless-steel case-back (200m), and one for the mineral crystal one (30m?...).
Excellent test Gary. I was a little suspicious to see 200m on a watch with a glass caseback. Maybe the seam between the metal and glass did it.. I do dive regularly and have used a Steeldive Tuna and a Heimdallr Monster and both were ok. That was good advice to users of this particular watch. Don't be too confident of its performance in water.
Great video Gary, when we buy watches we have to trust the manufacturers are being truthful about the watch's capabilities. Thanks for watching out for the buyer 👍
I did last week put it in my basket to buy but for the very reasons you say, had chosen the solid case back…low cost diver has to be viewed as a dress diver that can be swum in, no more. Good vid Gary
Well many Chinese watch manufacturers just put "something" on their dials, like "Automatic" which is undeniable and "200 m WR" which is expected on this kind of watch, but 99% of all customers are never going to test properly. Probably this watch can even handle swimming and shallow diving, so mostly they get away with it. I've been missing Herman! 😄
Hurray for Herman. It appears that the seal between the metal caseback and mineral crystal failed. Do manufacturers use a glue, gasket seal or just a pressure fit for this caseback assembly?
I've always taken the water resistance with a pinch of salt. even on more expensive watches. I tend to only take a watch into water if I'm comfortable with it getting water damage. Before I bought from Ali express, this was my faithful invicta diver - though I was ignorant to the QC issues (luckily mine never suffered from these)
I would never expect a glass back to pass such a test given the glass is normally very thin and not designed for any type of dive watch. As you said the original steel case back would not have any issues.
I suspect the Victa, being a major brand, actually tested their design and it doesn't *tend* to leak (let alone implode) till at least 400m. If you take it apart and take a look, I'm sure you'll likely see the crystal back is two or more millimeters thick: plenty. Jodi on Just One More Watch was only able to shatter the most paper-thin display-back crystal because it was like .5mil thick. Fun fact: I used to have a Citizen Ecozilla that I'm pretty sure would take the full 3k compression they do on Hydraulic Press Channel. It only claims 300 but LOOKS like the same design as their 1000m Autozilla, which times the usual 3x resilience beyond rating they seem to get on the channel tells me the damn thing could probably go to three kilometers and come back up no worse for the wear except for a dented caseback!
I don’t have a Tandorio bit I have some other Chinese micro brands and a couple of Seiko 5’s, that I swim in regularly. I lifeguard in the summer and I’ve not had one problem with my SEIKO’s, my Seestern, or my San Martin’s. The only time I’ve had a problem was when I briefly had an Orient Kamasu, I was not overly pleased with that watch and don’t regret selling it.
@@destrygriffith3972 It fogged up the first time I wore it in the pool, I immediately jumped out and threw it in my bag. Probably because of the crown, which was small and gritty and very hard for me to screw down.
Just bought a Tandorio (50 fm homage) with PT5000 movement; which I think will look very nice with a NATO strap. For under US$100 (delivered), seems hard to beat Tandorio value for money. I usually go with SteelDive for a daily-wear tool watch...but I wanted to try the PT5000, and Tandorio fit the bill nicely.
@@societacooperativatourmast8395 Generally, you cannot go wrong with Steeldive. However, Tandorio hasn't let me down either. Recently, I had a bit of fun modding a Tandorio (Cpt Willard) diver ($50 w/NH35 mov't). It came with an unbranded WHITE dial, BLACK ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal and Black/Chrome-circle dial markers. The BGW9 lume is not great within any dark-black dial marker, but I was going for a PANDA look. Replaced the bracelet with a black nylon strap ($5). I bought a silver SEIKO dial sticker for another $8, that goes well with the PANDA look. For $63, it's a killer looking tool watch. For the money, Tandorio is hard to beat. You might miss the signed crown or the nicer signature caseback on the Steeldive, but in terms of specs...the Tandorio watches have not disappointed me.
great video and its a concern for me I purchased a watch last year with an astronaut theme from them that stated sapphire glass I tested it with a diamond tester it was not I sent it back and got a full refund but for a few months after still saying sapphire so not the first time this brand has overstated a spec for a watch so I just will not buy from them again.
Re your first pressure test, always seen watch folks release the pressure all at once, not slowly. I probably misinterpreted what they were doing. 🤷🏻♂️ Sad that it leaked and may indicate dishonesty on Tandorio’s part. Did they really test some of their cases? And randomly test cases from different lots? Seems not.
Fun video to watch, I’m not a scuba diver , sometimes I get my watch wet so I want something that is water resistant , it’s kind of hard to beat up a watch with this much value in the price range. We all know how many people who scuba dive 200 meters breathing helium because oxygen doesn’t work that deep?
Still just consider that the deepest part of the Chesapeake Bay (where I live) is only 174ft (53 meters) and then only in one point the 'hole', average depth is 7m ... so 60m WR isn't bad. But I agree misleading WR - i don't think I would buy any Aliexpress (or most watch brands) for diving that aren't ISO certified. I do sometimes think that we as watch enthusiasts over emphasize the importance of the numbers (just like specs of the watch) without knowing what they mean in real life situations (i.e. how deep do normal/ average scuba divers go?). If we did know what the numbers realistically mean then maybe the WR numbers would be lower and more realistic and we would be ok with them.
I decided to try a Chinese watch and bought a Baltany 3-subdial Pilot chronograph. I don't know how waterproof it is but it seems to be a good quality watch. That went well so I decided to buy a Boderry bronze diver. The crown pulled completely out of the watch. They sent me another one and the crown on it doesn't work properly either. I'm not sure about buying another Chinese watch.
Just a thought: With these inexpensive watches, I'd suspect that any WR failures were more likely because of fast, slightly sloppy construction than any failure of the parts. First thing I would try is to remove the back, thoroughly grease the gasket, and re-assemble. If I was really ambitious, I'd do the same to the crystal gasket. Same thing if there's a gasket on the back glass. I don't think the mineral glass back window would have any effect on WR until you got to depths (like 300 meters) where the glass might physically fail due to overpressure.
I think, the process is that they dont have stoxk in hand ,when you order, they assemble it hastily. When i received my Steeldive 1907 i made sure to do my part and tighten the caseback myself😅 but still im afraid to shower with it. Si i bought a Tandario W10. One to keep in a glass box one to abuse 😂 im no diver. I do laps in the pool, 2000meters freestyle 500 meters of butterflies
Es ist sehr schwer für mich die Dichtung richtig zu setzen wenn ich diese Uhren auf hatte. Sie verrutschen sehr leicht beim zu drehen. Ich teste nur im Waschbecken.🙈😁
Get it, unscrew the back, grease it, screw it back (all this for the fear of the notorious Chinese QC 😋), (maybe don't even get the glass caseback), go swim, all well. It is like so, isn't it? Cheers Gary, now we know the problem, can fix it and enjoy!
Salt water would be problematic. Would be great to test some Addiesdive, Steeldive, Seestern. Tandorio is a more economical brand. Also test watches with a steel case back. Great to know. I wonder if the Steeldive Addiesdive tuna is a proper water resistant watch
I'd love to have both case backs ideally and a spare different colour bezel to boot and bracelet switch out option jubilee and oyster or president or all 3
Gary, Thankyou! You have just shown what liars the makers of this watch are. Your pressure tester tests the crystals to 60M, can you imagine what could happen at 200M?? I would have at a guess to say either a major leak or the mineral crystal shattering. I was already going off the cheap chinese homages. Now I feel you should test all watches against their claimed water resistance. You truly exposed Tandorio for its false claims today.
Totes. *Might* make it up 200m exactly without implosion, but no safety margin beyond that like we seem to see from other brands on the Hydraulic Press Channel. Got a Deep Blue claims 300 with a display back I finally thought to be sus about, but that crystal is thic, so I bet it would actually take the typical 3x to blast it - friggin' kilometer! One thing took me forever to see tho is that the crystal is beveled and seated in the caseback in such as way that the optics refract and make it appear that there is no metal for it to push on as it compressed by water and forced inward. I had to take off the caseback and really look closely: there *is* a tiny ring/shelf of metal there that the crystal seats onto - the clever beveling just makes it so you can't see it from outside the watch. I suspect it would hold fine because crystals are so much stiffer than metals, as we see on HPC when even the cheapest models seem to well bend the casebacks on their way down to shattered faces.
My tandorio gmt came with the case back completely unscrewed. It literally fell off. They look the part but nobody should consider this brand as anything other than it is….a watch parts store that has some guys who put all the parts together and call it a watch.
I don't mind 'em on dress watches with WR ratings of 30m or so, as they shouldn't be exposed to more water than one would get on them when washing one's hands (especially when paired with a leather band). On a real diver, solid caseback is the way to go...and if we're honest, while the movements most often found in these cheap Chinese watches might be workhorses, they're not exactly much to look at.
Hi garry! From what I know the rating doesn't work like that, 200wr isn't 200 meters proof watch just like a 50mr isn't 50 meters. 200mr is around 30 meters of actual depth rated. So testing it to more than that isn't that fair in my opinion. I tool my steel dive willard down to 30m under while scuba diving but wouldn't trust it more than that
the exibition casebacks never really do well with WR. Especially on something that should be diver, you want to go with a sturdy solid screw down caseback. if its only going to be a desk diver or the swimming pool, fine.
I'm not a diver, so I don't know: how deep do normal recreational divers normally go? Isn't 200 meters reserved for professional divers with special equipment, like helium mixture? For me, 100 meters is more than enough, I think.
Thank you for doing this test Gary. I don't understand why some manufacturers lie about these things I wouldn't expect more than 100m from a GMT - It just makes us question other claims.
Anyone diving to two hundred metres, ior sixty metres is not likely to wear a Tandorio watch, but as a watch to wear for swimming and at the beach it should be fine. But watch out for sand under the bezel.
I send them a message about a video doing this test. Lets see if they actually check it out and set things straight. I really like the look of this watch and almost pulled the trigger untill I saw this. But lets all be fair and not be that manly. 200m underwater, 5m underwater will be my own record. :-)
I've been more surprised how well they seem to hold up for folks than that they're not quite 100% honest. That I can grab an Addis, Steel, Pagani, let alone a San M and expect it to likely take up to at least ~50% of claimed depth when none of us swim to 200m, actually makes me pretty happy and impressed with our consumer demands. Once you wake up from the fantasy of getting more than you pay for and remember who you're dealing with, it's actually honestly impressive how much you do get for the cash these days: legit certified Helms, Deep Blues that actually seem fit for use in the deep blue, Cronoses you literally can't compress even with a hydraulic press, San Martins with finishing as good or better than Seikos or Citizens. SM in particular I can't wait to pick out my first of and confidently showboat around the pool...
Yes Tandorio you should have left it at 100M. However, on a side note. What percentage of people really dive with their watches? I mean how many professional divers are there in the world compared to # of dive watches sold? I think, IMHO, most watch makers should make desk divers. As they are thinner and thus look better...to me. Why have this thick watch on your arms that you know you are not going to do nothing more than swim with it? JMHO.
I had an orange tandorio skx and it got dirty so i lightly rinsed it under water in the sink for about 5 seconds and water got inside it. The crown was secure and so was the backplate. 200m? Not even a meter and it drowned. You get what you pay for. They should be sued for putting that rating on the dial....i dont care if its a homage. Better water resistancy in a cheap casio 50m watch. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY
Even as people are, typically, overreacting, let's not forget the Cronus' successful 3,000 meter test. This watch, even with the see-thru back, would not have had any issues used for merely swimming, probably even snorkeling. With the solid case-back, who knows what it is capable of? There are many accounts of Helms, ostensibly specifically designed to be used for diving, failing. Has a Subby never failed? At a thousand times the price of this watch?
I think many reviewers that look at Aliexpress watches are getting a tad silly . Ali watches provide exceptional value for money & have better specs & finishing than $500 Seiko's . As someone else said for most of us these watches will be swam with & possibly snorkelled with & they will be fine for that .
Unless that 200M is certified it's just a claim, but since very few of us will ever expose our watches to anything near that kind of pressure I'd say it's safe for everyday use. But I still won't go out on a limb and bash all Chinese watches because this one failed, this is a company specific issue.
Chinese companies should stop lying about their product (and most of them do it), but on the other hand we should also recognize that this is the nature of buying from China. Absurdly inflated product claims seem to be the norm. I've seen them claim 10k mah from an 18650 battery that when tested only had 600-800. But we all knew it was probably well under 1000 going in. It's like an abusive relationship that both parties have gotten way too comfortable with.
Laughing….how many of you have dove past 10 meters? I venture to guess the average bloke has never swam deeper than 60 ft because after that you need scuba gear,(unless you are a trained skin diver.) the number of people who scuba dive is less than a percentage of the population and they aren’t wearing a dive watch to measure oxygen stores, they are using a dive computer. Can I wear it swimming? That’s all I really want to know.
My pelagos says it’s good to 500m. Truth is, the deepest my watches have ever gone maybe 15ft at the beach once. As long as I can shower with it I’m good.
I've personnally tested the Tandorio 62Mas and several SKX homages in the swimming pool at 5 meters depth, without any issue. That beeing said, i wouldn't trust a sub $100 Ali's watch for diving. Instead, i would use an Heimdallr, Steeldive, or Addiesdive. And even Seastern and Sugess, because surprinsingly they are ISO 6425 compliant. Why don't you test these brands instead?...maybe shouldn't we forget that once upon a time, Swiss watches were considered the laughing stock, trying to copy french, english, and american watches. Noone laugh anymore now : )
I see you named Herman after Herman Munster, which is also a kind of cheese, which is made by expelling moisture from curdled milk under pressure? Makes sense.
I think the quality of these Chinese watches forces this kind of scrutiny, but I don’t think anyone is surprised at this result. Do we like them any less though? That’s my dilemma. These “homage” errr replica watches.
I never trust ANY Chinese specification. Knives are NEVER the quoted steel. Batteries are NEVER the quoted capacity. Watches NEVER meet the depth rating. If you want a cheap dive watch get a Casio 👍 PS : Because of the unique case design, 200m Vostok Amphibias regularly exceed 700m 😲
Tandorio SHOULD NOT sell these watches as cheap as they do either, I guess you just can't trust Chinese products, better to sell your house and buy a swiss watch, because "they're worth it"... P.S. People who buy mechanical watches in the 21st century do it either because they can't afford to replace batteries or they are so bored with their lives they need adult toys to play with. My grandpa wore a mechanical watch most of his life, but once he switched to quartz he was very happy and felt no need to go back, that's the progression of technology.
You are the first youtuber I've seen to correctly use this pressure tester
I typically take for granted that most inexpensive dive watches are not truly 200m rated, but it is put on the dial more as a marketing piece. One to keep in a glass box one to abuse 😂 im no diver. I do laps in the pool, 2000meters freestyle 500 meters of butterflies
Really enjoyed this video. 👌
Withstanding air is harder than water so it did well
Es ist sehr schwer für mich die Dichtung richtig zu setzen wenn ich diese Uhren auf hatte. Sie verrutschen sehr leicht beim zu drehen. Ich teste nur im Waschbecken.🙈😁
Still impressed with the value of the watch. Good video. Cheers.
Yup, it shouldn't put you off, we just need to have realistic expectations especially when there is a crystal in the case back.
Looking and sounding professional, nice.
Did the steeldive sd1970 survive this test? I can’t find the vid you did
Did I do a vid?
Good day sir. I have a steeldive sd1907 200m l. Im afraid to go swimming with it 😂
I don't know why they offered an exhibition back?
Get it, unscrew the back, grease it, screw it back (all this for the fear of the notorious Chinese QC 😋), (maybe don't even get the glass caseback), go swim, all well. It is like so, isn't it?
Cheers Gary, now we know the problem, can fix it and enjoy!
Would love for you to check a sekonda 1846.
Thanks for this.
Salt water would be problematic. Would be great to test some Addiesdive, Steeldive, Seestern. Tandorio is a more economical brand. Also test watches with a steel case back. Great to know. I wonder if the Steeldive Addiesdive tuna is a proper water resistant watch
Good day sir. I have a steeldive sd1907 200m l. Im afraid to go swimming with it 😂
@@mansour9790 I sold my Aliexpress watches, and I bought a few Citizen Promaster Eco Drive and one automatic. Happier to wear original designs
That’s exactly what I said…I think the crystal would have cracked and imploded…
Yeah putting together a complete watch and calling it a watch is just bizarre. Same with putting together car parts and calling it a car, just crazy.
I am not a fan of clear casebacks - sapphire if they must but preferably always steel!
I tool my steel dive willard down to 30m under while scuba diving but wouldn't trust it more than that
A watch rated at 200m isn’t suitable for 200m of diving but it must pass a brief test equal to 200m
"You get what you pay for" proven yet again. Very good video as always. 👍🏽😬
It’s just a nice-looking copy of a $15,000 watch, meant to look pretty on your wrist. Only a fool would use it for diving.
@@markseymour8365 Or even a $15,000 watch for diving.
the exibition casebacks never really do well with WR. Especially on something that should be diver, you want to go with a sturdy solid screw down caseback. if its only going to be a desk diver or the swimming pool, fine.
I’d like to see if the Japanese and Swiss 200 meters pass that last test
Exhibition backs are not usually DIVE worthy below 100M.
I'm not a diver, so I don't know: how deep do normal recreational divers normally go? Isn't 200 meters reserved for professional divers with special equipment, like helium mixture?
For me, 100 meters is more than enough, I think.
I doubt most recreational divers even go lower than 40 or 50 metres.
Thank you for doing this test Gary. I don't understand why some manufacturers lie about these things I wouldn't expect more than 100m from a GMT - It just makes us question other claims.
Why specifically from a GMT? GMT Master being 100m is irrelevant.
@@DM-rc4yu probably because there’s no point putting that much WR on a watch that has no business going anywhere that deep.
Anyone diving to two hundred metres, ior sixty metres is not likely to wear a Tandorio watch, but as a watch to wear for swimming and at the beach it should be fine. But watch out for sand under the bezel.
Fantastic video, many thanks. Buyer beware!
I send them a message about a video doing this test. Lets see if they actually check it out and set things straight. I really like the look of this watch and almost pulled the trigger untill I saw this. But lets all be fair and not be that manly. 200m underwater, 5m underwater will be my own record. :-)
I don’t have to worry about a measly 200m with my Tandorio as it is rated down to 300m.
Not long ago you could get a ISO rated and pressure tested diver's 200 Seiko SKX for £90.
Always depends on what "not long ago" means. I remember $1 gas 🙄🤣😂
I've taken most of my Ali watches on actual dives(out of curiosity) down to 47m without issues. Maybe a fluke? Pity though
Most I tested have been fine too
I've been more surprised how well they seem to hold up for folks than that they're not quite 100% honest.
Good day sir. I have a steeldive sd1907 200m l. Im afraid to go swimming with it 😂
Yes Tandorio you should have left it at 100M. JMHO.
Pretty much nobody needs even 100M WR. If you're actually diving, use a dive computer, not this outdated tech.
I like Tandorio watches, lots of bang for buck, that said ! If your into diving you wearing a dive computer.
If you’re taking this as a dive tool, well, good luck
I had an orange tandorio skx and it got dirty so i lightly rinsed it under water in the sink for about 5 seconds and water got inside it. The crown was secure and so was the backplate. 200m? Not even a meter and it drowned. You get what you pay for. They should be sued for putting that rating on the dial....i dont care if its a homage. Better water resistancy in a cheap casio 50m watch. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY
I can't hold my breath long enough to swim 60 meters underwater.
Busted!
Still a good value for the watch. I think tandorio offers the Best value watches in that price range
Now do the same test on your aliexpress sponsors watches not just their competitors that under cut them 😂
Even as people are, typically, overreacting, let's not forget the Cronus' successful 3,000 meter test.
A hundred times.
Neither one of my Rolex’s are certified. Maybe they’re not water resistant either,
Chinese companies should stop lying about their product (and most of them do it), but on the other hand we should also recognize that this is the nature of buying from China.
That’s all I really want to know.
ı will wear it in a two weaks while swimming. wait for it:D
I put my watch on a fishing line to 200 metres. Why? Stuffed if I know! 🤷♀
Tandorio cannot be relied on to ship. But fortunately, AliExpress will refund.
Noone laugh anymore now : )
Try it in the blender next
If you were to dive to 200m then why would you purchase a cheap Chinese watch? Surely this test is irrelavent.
How many of Us dive up to 200 m in our lives?.......:)))))))))))))))))))))))))
I see you named Herman after Herman Munster, which is also a kind of cheese, which is made by expelling moisture from curdled milk under pressure? Makes sense.
Herman from the Simpsons…he’s got 1 arm…
@@ILikeWatches2 Very cool. And he can still shop at the Leftorium.
If you want a cheap dive watch get a Casio 👍
PS : Because of the unique case design, 200m Vostok Amphibias regularly exceed 700m 😲
Some people buy a watch to tell the time, some people are so bored they buy a watch and don't care about the time. Some people hey!
I just don't buy watches with stupid names like Tandoori and Parsnip etc
Never believe anything on the dial of one of these watches. The only guarantee you get is that they are hand crafted from the finest Chineseium.
none of these homage shit watches can pass this test . none .
