The Reilly Method of Head Drawing- Part 1
Вставка

- In this video I go over the step-by-step process of creating the human head using the Reilly Method. If you already know what the Reilly abstraction is-- and simply want to know how to draw it-- this video is for you. I hope this video is helpful in breaking down a drawing technique that seems much more overwhelming than it actually is.
I hope that you enjoy my first video. More to come! Please like this video if you find it helpful and subscribe if you'd like notifications on my videos as they are released. Thank you!
being self taught from the age of bookstores to this new age of internet, i find it fascinating how you can see dozens of people talk about the same concept and never communicate anything. Then you ind one great resource like this video and you immediately "level up" your work just from one session.
Thank you very much for this video.
Indeed ! ... Internet and good people are an amazing mixing
Best head drawing tutorial I've ever seen. Thank you!
張庭羽 and hardest indeed,it's seems kinda complicated :P
I know this is 4 years old but it is one of the best explanations of a drawing process I have ever seen. Succinct, clear, exactly the right level of technical detail. Thanks for the great work in preparing it.
Wow this is one of the few resources I was able to find that actually spoke on how the reilly method worked and how to do it. Thank you! This is so useful especially when knowing something like hampton’s or the loomis method, combining them with this is useful. Really appreciate this, thanks!
This and the other videos in the series, are some of the best videos on the Reilly method that I have found.
Thanks!
Man, this was so easy to follow. Thanks.
Such an informative tutorial at a pace which allows you follow as you go along. Like what has already been said there's plenty of tutorials on UA-cam but none that can compare to the steady process and calming narrative. I had to chuckle when you said 'you will not have to follow all the steps as you progress' I will never grasp the concept!! Thank you for an amazing lesson.
Keep safe....
I apologize for the delay between videos. I have several videos that only need narration and I wasn't a fan of the poor audio quality in this video. As soon as I receive the microphone set-up that I ordered I will narrate the videos that I have edited and get them up. I plan to keep a regular schedule of at least one video a week from that point. Thank you for your patience and support during the infancy of this channel while I figure this all out.
Like your videos. Thank you very much!!
Fantastic overview! Thanks for posting this: Reilly's material always seems to make more sense when I see it done step-by-step instead of trying to infer it from a diagram.
The Loomis method is okay but it does have its limitations but this method picks up where that method leaves out. I'm so glad I found this video.
thanks dude, this is better than the art classes I pay for

Hi, just wanna tell you how useful this tutorial is! Thanks for sharing this!
You have taught me my new passion THANK YOU!!
Thankyou. Very clear and informative
Awesome demonstration 👌
thanks to this guy everybody is beautiful to me
I've watched a few vids on this method and all of them are different. But so are faces. As long you understand the concept and stick to a certain order tou do just fine. I like this vid particularily for the order, starting to build around the eyes and top parts. Looking forward to more from this.
Great tutorial 😊
Kyle.......THANKYOU!!!! This was the best tutorial on the Riley Method, I found. You're the best. I definitely subscribed!
i really like how you explained the reason behind the rhythms. this is a very helpful thanks
Loved the session ❤️
Excelelnte method. Very well explained. Thanks. Very useful.
I have to thank you Kyle, with this simple method I improved a lot the quality of my drawing, I don't the technique as my main drawing method, but the Riley method is incredible o put the featured in the right position even with perspective or foreshortening. Thanks a lot again
Thank you for this video im sure this will help in my drawing as a beginner.
I eventually found a clear and unterstandable step by step video, thank you!
Great video! You put in a lot of important info that many others have failed to include. Some others are like, draw this circle, then draw this one, but don't explain or include how they are connected, or how you find the correct positioning. But you did and that helps a lot, so thank you!
One thing tho, shouldn't the top of the ear aline with the brow line, not the eye line? All the artists I've seen say that and even my own ears are like that on my own head. The tips of my ears aline with my brow line. But everyone is different, and I understand that.
Bless you for this video
This seems to cover more than the Loomis method meaning it's time for me implement this. Thank you!
This was great. Very helpful.
Well done. Got a little confused about marking the top of the ear with the eye line, not the brow line, but there are people with huge ears, or little ears, or no ears, so no big deal. Thank you for the time and effort of making this. Much appreciated.
excellent.. this really helped me!!! Thank You
Finally someone got around to putting this online - thank you Mr Hefty!
Thank You .. very useful information
Very clear! Thanks.
Thank you so much for this. I'm going to practice right now.
Good stuff and super helpful! Thank you! Still relevant in 2020!
Amazing video, could it be possible please to have 3/4 view tutorial/demo please.
Underated video! Thank you very much!
Thank you so very much. Your lesson was appreciated fantastic.
Thank you. Great video. I've never seen this method before but it's so useful. Your explanation is great. Looking forward to seeing more.
This is really, really good stuff. It explains a lot of things the Loomis method seems to think you should just know.
Thank you. Just keep in mind though, the Loomis method is still very good, it just isn't really the same thing. The Loomis method and the Reilly abstraction are very complimentary to one another. Once you commit the Reilly abstraction to memory what you will actually be drawing most of time will be a lay-in much closer to the Loomis head. You will want to use your knowledge of the Reilly system to lock things in place, and most of this will be done in your head and by "ghosting" over the paper without actually putting down a mark. Think of the Loomis method as a system of basic construction and the Reilly abstraction as more of a mental roadmap :)
Right. I guess that's what I was trying to express.
I've spent years practicing my drawing and illustration. But the face was something I never had confidence in, because unlike pretty much every other part of the body, it's very complicated with all of the plane shifts. Everything else is basically a cylinder or a box. They aren't that hard to figure out.
I would usually accidentally do something right on the face, and I'd be okay with that. But the problem was, I never understood why what I did was right. I just knew it was right.
I mean, to someone who didn't know how to draw... it would probably pass as really good. But to people who know what they are doing... they would see that I kind of faked it. I know they would, because I see it, and that's exactly what I'm doing. I'm drawing it without understanding what I am drawing. And, that's always been something that I've struggled with. And no amount of Life drawing or books I read really resolved the matter for me. I learn by seeing. It's not enough to just tell me or for me to read about it. I really have to see it. And, you've shown me how.
I just could never pinpoint the anchor points of where the "magic" was supposed to happen to tie it together. And though Loomis gave me a good understanding of the basic layout and what things are supposed to look like, I could never shake the feeling that he was skipping some details. And... I see now that that was the case. This method filled in those blanks for me.
I'm confident that with a little practice on this method, I'll be able to sweep through the faces with more confidence and understanding. Thanks for the tutorial. Keep 'em coming!
I happy to have helped. Just keep on practicing the rhythms and you'll be amazed how much more efficient they will make you, even by just having the knowledge in your mind and not actually drawing the lines.
Great video on the Reilly Method. The best explanation I've found yet! Thank you so much!!
Very useful video! Thank you very much!
Man is this complex. I realise I know nothing about drawing head. But I find this video really helpful.
I love it. SUPER HELPFUL hopefully youll create more vid for side view 3/4 etc..
Thank you! Your teaching is awesome! 😎 you make it understandable
Thank you for educating me! Clear explanation .. amazing
It was usefull! Thanks! I want to see the continue!
Excellent!
Very helpful video! Thank you!🙏
SO HELPFUL! I thank you for the step by step process as well as explaining the landmarks in a simplified yet in depth way! :)
Thank you for this video. Best explanation for Reilly available online. Subscribed 😁
thank you, i been look for a demonstration of this method for a while.
Such strait, smooth lines. 👏👏
Fantastic and straight to the point video! Thanks man!!
thank you this was fantastic! im going to practice some draw over rights now. I just handwrote out all 26 steps so i can follow one by one. thankyou!
Excellent video. Thank you Kyle!
superb, watched it many times. thankyou
Hi, you could see how quickly you levelled up after Loomis method! I have been using the Brigeman method and will definitely get a new sketchbook and try each Loomis and eventually Reilly - thanks for this very useful video!
Bro thank you this just inproved me to draw better hyper realistic portraits from loomis method this is way better
Great video, thanks
Thanks, Kyle. This was helpful. I just bought the Asaro head that you used at the beginning of the demonstration. This helps a lot with lighting.
This is brilliant and a great refresher course for me, thank you!
This is blowing my mind!
hey what an amazing video, definitely the best demonstration ive seen!!
oh it would be great if you did this on the 3/4 view
Very useful, thank you!🙏🏻
thank you so much. can you recommend any books or learning resources that breakdown and teach the Reilly method even further?
As far as books are concerned I honestly don't know of any really good books on the Reilly method. There are several out there but from what I've read about them they aren't very deep. One of the reasons tracking down instruction on this is so difficult is that Frank Reilly never wrote any books on his method and most of his students went onto art careers and never taught or wrote books either. I had a great deal of difficulty tracking down good instruction on this method and thats the primary reason I wanted to start my channel off by sharing what I know about it. I know how hard it is to find.
That being said, I can point you to some of the resources I do know about. There is a video course by Ron Lemen on drawing the male portrait available from the Gnomon Workshop as either a DVD, download, or as part of a monthly subscription plan. In one of the intro chapters he briefly goes over the Reilly method and I watched this part over and over and drew from it many times. It is very brief but the good thing about video is that you can rewind and rewatch it as you need to. NOTE: he doesn't go over the Reilly method in his drawing the female portrait DVD, so stick to the one on the male portrait if you are going to buy one of them rather than starting a subscription.

Another good resource that is pretty cheap is Sheldon Borenstein's youtube channel. It is a paid channel but the price is pretty low. He goes over the abstraction in his head drawing lessons pretty thoroughly. He's a great teacher with a lot of experience as a professional and I can vouch for his channel, it was very helpful for me. There is a 14-day free trial period so you can check it out and see if it helps you.

Finally-- if you have some extra cash lying around-- I would recommend the Watts Atelier online classes. Jeff Watts is really into the Reilly method and he's a living master. I think he may be one of the few people around that actually learned from a professional artist who was a student of Frank Reilly's. This is the most expensive option at $100 a month but from what I've seen and heard it's worth the price. I'm actually starting the drawing courses there myself in the next couple days, so maybe I'll see you in the student forums.

Jeff also has a youtube channel so you can get a little sample of the courses

Just keep in mind that there are many variations on the Reilly method and everybody teaching it (including myself) will have little adjustments to it or additional rhythms that suit them. It might seem a little confusing but there doesn't seem to be a "right" way to do it, just many ways. I hope you find something helpful here. I wish there was more but, like I said, the reason I lead with this topic on my channel is that I know how hard the information is to come by.
+Kyle Hefty thank you so much for the very informative explanation. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to respond with all that info. I will definitely look into those. I'm also looking into the full body Reilly abstraction, the 6 lines of the figure I believe its referred to as. hard to find much complete info on that as well.. I recently saw a book recommended on ConceptArt forums called Elements of Painting: Teachings of Frank Reilly. and it was written by one of his students apparently, Ralph Garafola. it really looks fantastic from what is shown on the website but it is indeed expensive. about $125 USD. so hopefully someday I can buy it or find it on eBay or something. the website is frankreillytheelementsofpainting.com
Thank you so much for this. I really learned so much.
The best❤️
Thank you for a fantastic video!
8:21 "Woof, take me to your leader!"
Thank you for explaining this so well ☺️
Great video! Thank you.
Looking forward to new content. I’ve been looking for a book on this method but all I find is Loomis.
Thank you so much! This is wonderful!
many many thanx for this video!!!
amazing work
Great work
when you go down the rabbit hole of construction and rhythm and realize you know nothing about drawing
Well, keep trying and eventually the rhythm will become real drawing. I didn't start drawing seriously until after 32. And I am still learning the basic of portrait drawing at 42. But those drawing rhythms did become passable drawings for me when I kept going at it.
I don't know everything about drawing. And after practicing for a while, I do know a little something about drawing. It's all about efforts and practice.
@@rukawa23gold very inspirational.
@@radwaygo3140 Thank you. Drawing is fun 💎. Follow my IG if you want to check out my work. IG ID: nobel_prize_medicine
great video bro... thanks...
This is definitely way better than the loomis method however, i think that combining them is even better.
So useful!
great one Kyle, really clean and neat
Really helpful, you explain so well, everything is easier now! The sound is okay. I liked and subscribed ;)
The sound is clear and everything is Fine!...the video it is very useful...Thank you for your time....subscribed and i wait for more.
Thank you for the sub :)
Thank you so much, this video was super helpful!
instant result! And it all makes sense. Don't fall for the Loomis meme. This is gold.
Thank you, I'm happy you are seeing improvement in your work :)
What do you mean? The Loomis method is not trustworthy? I ask because I'm new in this craft an Loomis is pretty much recommended everywhere.
I mean that there are more than one way to draw. Don't get into Loomis and only Loomis because some forums and websites are obsessed by it.
Riley method is based on Loomis method just saying
The Loomies method is the base for the Reilly methode! (in this video) Of course, you can draw the base head construction with an other methode too, but .....why??? These both methodes work so great together, how we see in this tutorial.
Wow, awesome. Such a useful guide, thanks man! :)
Yeah I found it useful, thank you!
Thanks man.... This is pretty good.
Also would it be possible to do the Reilly method for the figure?, I understand this would be more comprehensive in breaking down please?. The only reason I ask is is because I find your videos easy to understand because you're a great teacher.
Hey Kyle! I am just hearing about the Reilly method, I think I had seen the rythyms and stuff before, but I had no Idea how useful it can be. Do you know any sources on how to apply it?
Thanks again! You teach it very well!
Thanks for the video, but I already confused for the hairline, could you please teach me how to find the hairline? Thanks!
Thanks Kyle great video!
Thank you very much for the tutorial. Clear succinct depiction of the method which is enriched by your live video . You are a very good instructor. Kudos!
oooh, this is soooo useful. thank You very very much! :))
Omg this is so helpful
