The Classic Tetris World Championships Explained

*Small correction to this segment (thanks to Nocturn for pointing this out) - to keep DAS charged, you press the direction for the next piece in a 10 frame window /before/ it enters the screen, not right as it enters the screen. An incredibly difficult move regardless and impressive for players to pull it off consistently with nearly every piece in tournament!
Thanks for watching! My video about going to the CTWC is finally out: ua-cam.com/video/RfuDrcrGnVQ/v-deo.html
I saw the tournament and got mildly addicted to Tetris someday i hope to be as good as half of them

"NES Tetris isn't a marathon" almost exactly 4 years later, this has changed completely, none of us saw that coming!! Thank you for this great video, I was looking for an introduction to the CTWC to show my friends and this is perfect!
It's amazing how a little discovery like rolling just instantly changed competitive Tetris from a sprint for the highest scores to a grueling test of endurance to the point where the game is done with your BS and gives you 800+ lines to clear in a near-invisible color palette.
That's the best explanation of DAS I've ever seen.
Love that "Calm down Joseph" @ 27:55
This video is one of my absolute favorite things to watch every year.
23:48 wait im not watching a SummoningSalt vid.....am I?

That’s what I was thinking! :)

@@chwig7354 The name of the song is We're Finally Landing by HOME. :)
I thought the same thing lmao
I'm humbled by how physically squarelike this man is. Look at the four perfect right angles at the corners of his head. His choice of checkered flannel shirt is such a bold statement of his pride in his rectangular body. He occupies space as efficiently as the tetronimoes he celebrates.
I can't tell if this is a joke or a genuine compliment.
@@CsQ_RandomRepositoryThis is a Tetris video. It makes me confident that the audience would have an air of sincerity.
Hearing Jonas, it’s sad that he’s gone. All respects to Jonas and his family
I thanked you in person at the event, and I need to thank you on the video itself. I am on the broadcast team, and this video contains all of the facts I try to convey to new viewers of the event, but as you can imagine, shoving 20+ minutes of information into the middle of matches is impossible, and I can only get bits and pieces in.
Thanks Chris! After putting together this video I paid attention a lot more to the commentary this year, and holy cow, you had your work cut out for you with all the new stats! As the day went on I was able to understand everything though - this tournament's broadcast really felt like a step up in all aspects of production, everyone's effort behind the scenes was apparent and it was great hearing the dynamic between you and Arda.
@@aGameScout Thanks :) Arda is a mf'n professional and really raised my game (watch me from 15 to see how far I've had to come along). My approach has always been to explain what is going on to people who have never played NES Tetris, as that is the key to growing interest in the game. And of course Trey's work on the tech side is simply phenomenal! I am already excited for next year!
Currently working on the subtitles for this video and you wouldn't believe how hard the automatically generated subtitles are struggling with the word "DAS".
So far I've seen it written it as "as", "desk", "dash", "death", and "ass", with my favorite instance being "a fully-charged ass".
lmfao
It’s because DAS isn’t an English word but an algorithm

normally I'd never comment on youtube videos, but with this video I'll make an exception.
I started watching the CTWC about 2 years ago, just after the 2016 tournament and instantly became hooked to it. I was so excited about it that I immediately started showing it in the living room of my studenthouse and to my friends. Like you said, at first they were a bit annoyed/surprised by it, but when time moved on and I started watching it more, they were starting to get intrigued by it and also started watching it. Now every year it's always a big hype at the end of oktober between me and my friends who is going to be the new champion.
We're living in the Netherlands, so the tournament is always in the night (9 hour time difference), but that won't stop me / us from watching this amazing tournament. Maybe when I'm earning a little bit more money, I'll fly to Portland for a weekend.
2018 was an awesome tournament (too bad I started watching it live from the top 16, so no idea if you qualified). It featured a whole program trey developed with lots of interesting new data. I'd love it if you could make a video about how the new program works, because for me it took me quite some time to figure it out. The presentators helped me out quite a bit
After two years of watching the game a lot of terms became clear to me, but your video explained it even a level further in an excellent way. Thank you for this! For now i'm just going to spam everyone I showed tetris to this video, because it is really great, keep up the good work!
p.s.
Harry Hong is not pressing down anymore, he took over jonas' tactic, he kept on hypertapping though.
This is one of the best videos on Classic Tetris ever made! It was great to hang out with you in Portland. Let's hope this won't be our last CTWC. :)

Love the use of Home - We're Finally Landing @23:48 underscoring the "humanity" in Tetris. Summoning Salt's WR progression videos sometimes use that to great effect as well. Thanks for putting in the time to make this!
Rest In Peace Jonas. You will be missed. Thank you for your wondrous contribution to the worldwide Tetris gaming community.
I'm rewatching this in honor of Jonas...
Rest well buddy, you changed the world for the better... That's all any of us can ever hope to do
Amazing video! I did the commentary with Chris during the finals of 2016 (I was away training in 2017 and James has done amazing since). Love the passion behind the video and all the research behind everything.
This single video is better than every other Tetris documentary combined. Quick paced, incredibly informative, made by a guy that actually goes from zero to a competitor--so he knows what needs to be explained more than a guy neck deep in the subculture, and actually funny. I mean, take away the top hat in the background and you have a pure cringe free video watching experience, lol.
Thanks for the kind words! And haha yeah I’ve gotten some flack for the top hat, it’s not something I actually wear normally though. It was meant as an Easter Egg nod to a time I got dressed up for a video on my other channel (ua-cam.com/video/AdW0yATHzu4/v-deo.html)
Watched your video, watched the 2018 CTWC and came back to say "Thank You!" These championships are enthralling and I'm surprised by how long I've went without knowing about this. The most exposure I've had to Tetris at a high level has been through various GDQ appearances. Can't wait to see your recap video of how you did !!

Thanks man, like a lot of people UA-cam recommended me a Tetris Championship video and I found it way more entertaining and engaging than I ever expected and I've been watching quite a few of the videos (even saw yourself in the last one) but a few of the mechanics of the game were eluding me like DAS, why levels started where they did, and the "kill screen." Your video was very informative, best of luck to you in Tetris!
This video is no doubt amazing and needs to be seen! I started watching the Tetris championship by accident 3 months ago, and I couldn’t stop watching.
Now I know the players, understand the rules, and recently stayed up in the UK to watch the Tetris 2018 finals in full!
I can’t describe it, but it’s amazing to watch! And this video is the perfect start to appreciate what goes on at that tournament .
Woah! An actual screen cap with ME in it! I am beyond humbled! This was an EXCELLENT video, but honestly... to truly get the full effect.. one DEFINITELY needs to attends a CTWC and witness the majestic awe in person. They need an expository video like this for every e-sport. What a great introduction into this hidden gem of a community.
I want to make some for other e-sports eventually!
I’ve actually never topped out. I’m still playing the first game I started in 1989 after I was struck by lighting and bitten by a cobra. I’m currently on lvl 4,038,045,863,746 with 7 quadrillion lines however I don’t know how many points I have since I maxed out four days after the game was released (I know I know I’m a late bloomer)
You’re probably wondering how I’m typing this as I play. Well after the lightning strike and 🐍 bite I was also given the ability to use other peoples bodies to multitask and buy large amounts of sour patch kids and hot pockets to bring my body that’s playing Tetris so that I maintain my brains undying need for sugar and fat to keep me sustained
Hi Todd Rogers, did not expect to see you here!

Wow, what a fishy story.
You too? Man, I thought I was alone in this!
BOOM! Tetris for Jeff.
I like that you used the same music at the end as Summoning Salt uses in his Speed Run World Record videos. It's just such a good, hopeful music.
This was fantastic, I was enthralled for the whole thing. Good luck on your attempt to win and have fun!
I'm only 4 minutes into the video but I must say: I found those Tetris championship videos some months ago and I've been gradually obsessing with them to the point that, when the 2018 tournament happened the other weekend, I had been anticipating it for about two weeks and I couldn't wait to spend the whole weekend glued to the live streaming of it -none of my friends understood why I was so excited or why did I have such a great weekend just watching the tournament. It is also odd because I usually don't watch or enjoy sports/e-sports.
Also, I'm from Spain and I couldn't believe that the week after that Jonas was trending in Twitter because some publication had erroneously stated that he was a 60 year old man from Albacete.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience before I continue watching this video, in case I forgot to do so once I finish it. I'm loving the first four minutes, I'm already learning new things, and I've already pressed the subscribe button. God job man :)
And now that I've finished watching I have a question: How did you fare in the championship in the end? Did you qualify? (I don't remember seeing you in the streaming, although I wasn't watching ALL day)

Qualifiers for the CTWC finals are also held in select retro gaming conventions around the US where the winners will be sponsored by the convention and flown to Portland to compete in the tournament. Let’s Play Expo in Irving, Tx held the southern qualifier,
Game On Expo in Phoenix Az hosted the Desert Qualifier,
Tecmo Madison in Madison, Wi held the Midwest qualifier, and Replay FX in Pittsburgh, Pa hosted the East Coast Qualifier.

Can't be too loud, you might disturb someone.
I think she is just nervous about her first time leaving her house.
I think this video is good to show how really any activity with interesting rules, enough complexity and high skill ceiling can become way more than maybe even its creator intended near said ceiling. That does make me wonder what other 'hidden sports' like tetris are just as engaging at that high level...
I really relate to the part where you talk about your own experience! Watching hours and hours of a game, understanding all of the hip lingo, and understanding strategies does nothing for you if you don't play. It gets a lot of people down, but they have the tools! They know what to do, they just need the muscle memory to do so. Like, a big problem in the guitar/clone hero community is that everyone wants to go on expert and FC ttfaf like the streamers, but let's be real, if you haven't played in years, you'll be lucky to get a 4 star on slow ride. Sure it feels lame playing on easy, or level 0, or whatever, but we all gotta start playing or else we'll never get good.
I really love this video and how everything is explained! It's funny that this old game just started to shine brighter and brighter. When I was a boy, I played tetris on SEGA genesis, original hardware and cartridge and of course CRT screen. It was amazing experience back then. Well, after watching this video, I feel like I want to recall that memory. Anyway, I watched thd CTWC 2018 from the begining to the final. also the 2017 one. I don't know all the people competed or i would rather say "having fun" but slowly their faces become more familiar and I can tell they and you're a good person. Keep up the good work. I wish I can be part of the community.

Not only did I sit through a 42 minute video about the 2018 world championship of Tetris, I sat through a 29 minute video explaining it. I had very minimal knowledge of Tetris, and about the same level of interest, but both videos were captivating. The former being incredibly intense and exceptionally commentated, and the latter being very well produced and purely interesting. But underneath it all, like the endless amount of commenters beneath the championship video, I, too, realize that there is something uniquely enthralling about this game and its community.
Fantastic video. Hope it trends in 2019 : 3

thanks for that detailed information about competitive tetris. very well explained! awesome video!
This is a very good video. I was one of the many people who first got in touch because of the famous 2016 final video and instantly fell in love with the CTWC. What I like most about the CTWC is the participant field. So many cool people full of character and diversity. And this is actually what kinda displeased me about the ctwc 2018. Don't get me wrong, Joseph played some very impressive tetris and his win is totally deserved, but i fear that the bitter truth is that in the present time some e sport affine youngsters could easily replace all those promiment people playing tetris for decades if they decide to go for classic tetris instead of idk starcraft or LoL...
That may be an issue if the prize pool gets really big and a lot of people come only for the money, or if new people are unpleasant in general. So far I haven't seen that happen though. Joseph and Greentea, who I think were the 2 youngest competitors this year, absolutely wowed the crowd both with skill and with heart. Many of the "old guard" players I talked to recognized that the field was so competitive now that it would be hard to get very far anymore, but they all loved the fact that it was so international now and that the level of play was increasing. One player who had competed for years and went out in the round of 16 told me, "That was an incredible show! And I saw it for free! I would have paid 100 bucks to see that." I didn't really hear from anyone that they weren't interested in competing next year, rather it just made them more excited!
I don't know Starcraft is absolutely fucking incredible, people won't fall away from it. Not Starcraft Broodwar at-least. Broodwar had an incredibly historic moment very recently in ASL Season 6. Champion literally crying when he won, I was also rooting for him so dang much!! I also have to agree with aGameScout, I don't think the increased competition would really ruin the community.
@@aGameScout It got even more extreme than I predicted. On the one hand i am absolutely stunned by what is possible by todays standards and how limits are pushed every other week. On the other hand, the old guard as well as the original concept of the competition has pretty much disappeared.
I'm really happy that I somehow landed on this amazing video.
You're a good presenter, explain very clearly and on top of that your charisma transports your passion flawlessly through the screen.

I already watched a lot of CTWC...and it reminded me that I had a Tetris cardridge for the GameBoy which, to my surprise, still works! But CTWC has been making me want to play the NES Tetris...not on an emulator, that would feel wrong. But what I didn't understand yet, was some of the language being used in the commentary, including the various naming for the pieces, as well as how the transitions work. Thank you very much for explaining those. I hope you had a great time on CTWC - and if I wasn't stuck here in Germany, I would be very happy to fly over to Oregon and participate in CTWC too. The last time I played on an emulator, I had 40k-ish of a score... I played this game a lot on my Gameboy when I was in hospitals due to my visual impairment and the number of surgeries done to me. In fact, my mom owned this very cardridge before she passed it on to me, which therefore makes it hold a huge value. And makes Tetris a special game to me! So thank you very much for this video! GG!
