  • Should the time ever come when you decide to map out your nutrition, it can be a bit overwhelming trying to figure out what to focus on first. Well, Protein is a pretty safe place to start. Even when you look past the gym bros and the artificial pushes, you'll still find that protein does many things that no other nutrient can replicate, and that when you don't make it a priority, you'll find that it can cause a domino effect of bodily failures that makes achieving your health goals much more frustrating. So, let's make sure we are all on the same page about what to expect from the king of the nutrients.

      Honestly, it may take a while, but I suggest going through everything, as it gives your viewers a basic education on nutrients (similar to your earlier videos on micronutrients, added sugars, and transfats). I have been able to follow your tier lists without trouble, though I would often need explanations on some of the specific fats early on.

      Maybe you can pick carbs and fats. That would at least help a lot of people like me understand and implement a moderately healthy diet. I know there are micro nutrients too but a balanced and diverse macros should be a great start and might help pave a path towards an overall balanced diet. Also can we consume a micro nutrient on a few days a week and still reap benefits the rest of the week or is it different for water and fat soluble micro nutrients?

      Talon's videos are solid so (assuming you have no preexisting conditions or specific goals other than 'be healthy') you could choose a random meat, bean (or grain) and 2/3 vegetables from his B/A/Top tier and you'd have a pretty good blueprint for balanced meals.

    This is what bothers me about people's conception of protein. They think protein from bread/pasta/beans is the same as protein from meat/dairy. I mean technically yes protein is protein, but protein has its own list of micronutrients that a lot of people probably don't get enough of.

    • @stuartblevins891
      @stuartblevins891 11 місяців тому +73

      You're right. The protein from meat and dairy stimulates IGF-1 production which fuels the growth of tumors. And it comes attached to a carcinogenic slab or slurry of saturated fat and cholesterol that increases risk for heart disease, digestive cancer, obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, alzheimers, and parkinsons.
      All plants contain all 9 essential amino acids in varying amounts. A diet of varied whole plant foods easily hits the marks for all 9 essential amino acids, as well as the total protein requirement. Increasing your heart disease risk by 46% to get "better protein" is a terrible idea.

      I was there too. Drank alcohol daily, ate out every meal (usually fast food), was fatigued 24/7; it was all I could do to get to work and goto the bar after. Neither parent cooked so I wasn’t raised to cook, actually discouraged from it. Anyway I started making simple proteins (ground beef, steak) and eating veggies raw… didn’t know what to eat so I googled “ten healthiest veggies” and started there. Then I increased my daily step count and started going to the gym as often as possible and take my word for it it works. Change your diet and raise your activity levels. It’s gonna be tough at first but let your motivation override your old, bad habits. You got this.

      Human body does not need carbs nor sugars. Increase your protein and fats to protect your organs and muscle.
      The body only needs a little bit of sugar compared to what's in carbs and sugars and will make it AS NEEDED.

      What I find annoying is many who are vegan or vegetarian have some kind of “holier than thou” attitude. Honestly it’s great if someone wants to be vegan or not eat meat but it’s certainly not for everyone. As stated in the video you need to be very smart about what you are eating in order to avoid under-dosing certain nutrients. Meat is just convenient, plain and simple. I agree with your point that SOOO many websites bash meat especially red meat when it is a very good thing to consume once or twice a week. Wish you the best, have a nice rest of your weekend.

      @@aidey8mph605In the video he just stated to eat a variety of protein sources. There is no complicated analysis that needs to be thought about here with regard to protein sources. Just don't eat the exact same thing all day every day. I don't even think about my protein sources and I get stronger every week.
      Typically, on a plant-based diet, you don't even need to worry about deficiencies in macronutrients so long as you're generally eating healthy foods and hitting your calorie goals (most healthy plant-based things that have a sizable amount of calories will also have a sizable amount of protein and/or healthy fat).
      There are a small handul of micronutrients (4 or 5 maybe) that are difficult to get from plant-based sources, but typically you can find cereals and plant-based milks that are fortified with those nutrients. So long as you are eating healthy otherwise, these few micronutrients are the only things that really need to even think about.

    • @aidey8mph605
      @aidey8mph605 11 місяців тому +1

      @@brentclapp6374 that was my point is that someone who was vegan but not eating proper proteins (a variety of beans and legumes mostly) then they could be deficient. It’s far simpler for the average person to be healthy if meat is included in their diet IMO. Not to mention there aren’t as many quick options for vegan if you weren’t able to make food for yourself due to time constraints though this is getting better with time.

      Technically anyone could be deficient if they’re not eating the right foods? And there are actually some good, quick plant-based protein options, even outside of the processed stuff. I eat a lot of pre-baked tofu, tempeh, and canned beans as a college student because all of them just need to be heated up. If you include the processed/frozen options, which have actually been widely available for a couple decades at this point, it’s even easier. It’s not just about dry lentils lol

    Maybe I'm in the minority but I feel like protein has been a bit glorified compared to the other macronutrients (not to say it isn't extremely important or anything, of course)
    When I've heard people in my life talking about nutrition, their basic understanding is "protein great", it's all/most they think about or know, and fats are demonized by society ever since it was suspected that a US president died of a condition/cause presumably related to dietary fats.
    They're double the calories of protein/carbs and thus I feel like that's yet another way people demonize them, thinking fat makes you fat. Which it can, but it's also really key for nutrient absorption, hormones, and especially in my experience, just eating enough (as someone with a very weak appetite) and that's why things like Omega 3 supplements exist, why many supplements have oils added for absorption, and why you're often supposed to take them with a meal.
    Anecdotally, I've also just felt a dozen times better since making fats a priority. Like avocados and nuts. Which are also pretty good for fiber, especially the former. I'm happier, and more mentally stable.
    Again, that's not even to disagree that focusing on protein first is a bad thing, that you shouldn't do it. I'm just saying that, with how much protein is glorified as a macronutrient (we have protein bars, powders, broths, cookies, cakes, you name it) with so much marketing that I think, even subconsciously, many of us already value it enough that we'll eat a good amount. Meanwhile, fat is demonized and often "feared" by some for being higher calorie. It is the de-facto choice for many people to buy the fat free version of stuff, like milk, yogurt, there's even things like that walden farms peanut butter which I hear is just awful.
    Basically, twice the calories doesn't mean half as good, and it's great to moderate the intake, but the food industry marketing might have you believe it's less important and even more harmful than it really is. Just my two cents. I like a balance of everything, but fats I think are something to at least be conscious of that you have enough. Much like water.

      Definitely a completely valid take. In a world where everyone wants to optimize and make things as simple to understand as possible, this does seem to be their go to. And I feel like I addressed it here but have also never been shy about all the different components that go into good diet. Again if this series takes off I think it could do a lot of good in giving perspective on that. And between you and me the next video in this series may or may not be over some kind of fat

    I like the new video and think it could make a really nice series as you make your way through the list.
    Targeting protein is the single "dietary" change that has helped my weight management the most. I try to target 1g/cm of height (about 0.9 g/lb in my case) and the resulting fullness has helped me keep the processed junk to a minimum without feeling like I am depriving myself. I could see a pretty successful "diet plan" where someone would just hit a protein target with clean proteins and then backfilling with stuff that isn't Twinkies; which is an incredibly powerful thing given the current Fad Diet market.

      What you said is exactly what I try to do. I eat a lot of clean meat and a buttload of eggs from my friend's backyard hens. I fill in the rest with veggies if I'm cooking for myself, or whatever junk food my friends/family want to eat. I feel pretty damn good most of the time eating like this, and only really start to feel like garbage when I've consumed too much sugar/caffeine.

    Hey I seen all your videos and learned a lot I started to make my list of what to eat on a daily basis. But there is just so many options I even took screen shots of everything you rated for top tier on each category. Could you make a video of what the average person should eat like if they just wanted to eat the same thing everyday and just use the top tier stuff for that and for each meal to hit all the micro and macro needs to be healthy.

    You should do a tier list on protein supplements (ex whey, casein, pea, soy, whey isolate, whey concentrate, beef, etc)
