Thanks for sharing. I watched the whole video and found it simple and practical. Looking to see how to fasten the shingles. I liked and subscribed and hope to see more in part 2 of this. I will be using this method to build an outdoor tiki bar shanty shack by using recycled materials as much as I can to save on building material expense.
@@WineberryHill Part 2 was just as informative and I gained more knowledge. Thanks for NOT having a noisy, animated graphic intro. Thanks also for NOT babbling on. Great idea !!! I’m going to do this for our garden shed. One thing I’d like to point out is not to cross your arm over like you did at 5:15 and 5:55. If that blade ever binds you might be in for a major injury
Thank you for such a practical and welll made video. Please do one on how to install these and also share any information you have on the durability and water shedding properties of pallet wood shingles.
those are nice clean , large pallets. iv been using cut up pallets for a few years now . mostly for out door fire pits and some indoor heating. we just bought a larger property. and there is a few sheds in need of siding. a chicken coop and the kids need a tree fort. this is a great method. im a big fan of free.scrap the metal, build and burn with the wood. cheers.
Love your work! I'm a DIY urban homesteader getting ready to repurpose a derelict 30 x 20 garage and will definitely use some of your tips to turn it into a greenhouse. Not possible to do geothermal and not sure how to replace old roof with transparent materials economically but you've inspired me :) Meanwhile I'll start with another project - pallet shingles to wall my wood shed.
I need to say that I really love your videos. It is easy to watch and understand everything you do. I only have one question. How do you protect the wood from the weather? Thank you som much and I am looking forward for more of your videos.
Yes, please overview what methods you've tried and landed on for tapering these short flat boards into shingles. Here, used cedar fence boards are ubiquitous, but I've noticed that shingles are tapered. And it's not obvious how to taper 6” wide boards on a table saw or other common tool, especially at scale. FYI: I'm in Austin Texas, and recently I gathered 8 tons of reclaimed wood using just my motorscooter. Simple tools allowed making pallet decks, work tables and simple tarp shelters. I'm now designing a modular work shed with heavy storage in the second story loft. Later, I want to fill the front yard with raised beds that may turn into mini greenhouse.
Great Idea great for on a Fixed Income,Thankyou , the Out House roof fell in recently and Smoke House leakes on hung meat. This will work ,I got a couple drums of creosote I soak them in they will last rest of my life
Yeah, my chop saw needs a new blade, so I'm down to one at a time. Here is part 2 of that video. Let me know if you want more: ua-cam.com/video/kUgF0JzHPag/v-deo.html
They look great. The reason I’m watching is b/c I need wood shingles, I love using them on my projects but Lowe’s hasn’t had them lately. I’ve always wanted to make my own anyways. I’ve thought about just buying wood boards and cutting them down. Right now I could use some really thin ones, I know it sounds crazy but I’ve been considering shims 😬 I’m working on a small space, i think it’d look cool.
There is a pretty wide range of species, but oak and pine are the most common. Oak will certainly last longer. Duration will depend on where it's installed and the weather. I've gotten 10 years on mine. Coating with boiled linseed will also help.
Yea. I wanna know more on this. Bout to wrap moms shed with pallet wood. Gonna use my reciprocating saw to cut the nails and just leave them in an work around them for big pieces and go horizontally. I like the vertical shake planks you have got going on here. Looks wise its good. But how about for wind? Like all those butts. I am gonna put vapor barrier. But it seems like i would get a lot of moisture still? Lemme watch this agin.
Do you treat the shingles to make them more fire resistant? Seems wood roofs are just asking for the building to burn down from any stray embers flying around.
I have done it in the past, and it ends up, making them too thin and likely to warp. Since they aren’t tapered, generally the solution so that they lay reasonably flat over each other is to reduce the amount of courses that you run.
Do you use pine or oak for exterior shingles? Or both? I would think oak would hold up better. What has been your experience? I come across a lot more pallets made with pine than oak. I do find quite a few that are made of unknown hardwood. Maybe tropical? Thoughts? Thank you. I enjoy these videos.
When it comes to shingles, I use what I can find and pay more attention to the thickness to make sure they are similar to each other as possible. Obviously oak is best , and if you can stockpile them prior to a project even better.
cool method, would have been good to see the full process, I kept getting frustrated you cut around the disassembly/peeling off of the individual shingle pieces.
Nice. Looking good. Btw off topic but would this HT pallet wood be safe for pet hamster to chew on? Our hamster is like a living 420cc 15 HP living wood chipper! Goes through chew toys on a daily. I could have purchased every Milwaukee tool available with the money ive spent on her chew toys in the past year. Lol ok im exaggerating but Man i can save some money cutting up small blocks for the fam ham.
Do you use wood varnish outdoors? In Poland we must protect every wood that stays outside because after a cold winter it will look awful and start to stratify. I saw many films from Canada and they also protect wood. So are you using some sort of magic in the US or another kind of wood that doesn't require varnish? I tested vegetable oil a few times with wood and the results were impressive, but most varnish and paint used on wood are based on chemistry. Please don't feel offended by my question. I just feel like my mind will blow every time I watch films from the US with such nice looking wood that seems not to be covered with any kind of protection material.
I think I just happen to have a climate friendly to leaving exposed wood because there’s a lot of it on my property and it’s lasted a very long time that said I’m not opposed to using whatever I have handy including something like you mentioned vegetable oil

not all shingles are tapered, i dont think he is tapering these based on looking at the finished roof.

I totally agree!
What type of wood are the pallets made from? Does it matter what species they are made from? How long do the shingles last?

Do you taper these shingles. Can they be used on the side of your house or are they more for rough/rustic applications?
I have tapered in the past and it encouraged warping. Mainly for out buildings imo.
Do you treat the shingles to make them more fire resistant? Seems wood roofs are just asking for the building to burn down from any stray embers flying around.
I haven’t, but I live in an area where the risk that is actually very low, but it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to do some thing linseed oil?
I would soaked them in linseed oil terpentine and diesel and dry in sun before installation 😊
Good idea!
Wow, i didn't know about MB! THANKS. Do the shingles not get tapered?
