Correction: Elvis often gave credit to the black artists that came before him. He did not steal black music. It was an era of experimentation and many thousands of hours jamming melding of R&B, Gospel and Rockabilly. Elvis was a genuine part of this era and new sound. He was a pioneer. Not first. But still a pioneer. In that era, it was an age of legendary song writers. Elvis performed 800 songs. He was a musician who played great rhythm guitar and piano and boy could HE SING. Legendary sought after rich baritone. ZERO of his works were stolen. EVERY SONG WRITER GOT PAID, and paid really well. Yes -- Including the black song writers that sold their music to Elvis to perform. Legends such as Al Green, BB King, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Sammy Davis Jr, Chuck Berry and Little Richard roamed the Earth at the same time Elvis did and they all knew Elvis, loved him, and praised him very highly. Elvis merged black and white music to help form Rock and Roll jolted a youth movement and civil rights movement to the forefront so both could succeed.

The theft narrative is a false one that was perpetuated by both Black and White people who feared the mixing of the races that this cultural revolution was bringing about. Jet Magazine interviewed Elvis on the set of Jailhouse Rock in 1957 when he refuted a nasty rumor about him saying the only thing a N Word could do for him was shine his shoes and buy his records. He said during that interview that he never said it and anyone who knew knows that he wouldn't. He gave credit to all the Black artists of the day in that interview and Jet Magazine believed him. Unfortunately that Urban myth still persists to this day even though where he was supposed to have said it, was a place and show he had never been to, and a city he hadn't ever visited up til that time. As for Cultural Appropriation, he grew up with that culture. Listen to his first record, one side is a blues tune: That's Alright Mama, the B side is a bluegrass tune Blue Moon of Kentucky. Neither sound like the original. His gift was his blending music genres and coming up with something new.

I hear you all! We aren’t saying we believe this. But it is a fact many people still have these thoughts of him. And it looks like this will literally be a big narrative point for the film. Unfortunately there are some people that don’t seem to realize or know that Elvis actually grew up within the black community. During a time of segregation he had black friends, neighbors and attended black church and black clubs. Yes, he was greatly influenced by the blues, gospel and black culture, dress and music. He also blew the racial doors open for black music and exposed it to the whites in mass. He faced attempts of the establishment to cancel him, having his records removed from machines, smashed and even banned, threats of violence to him and threats of arrest, yet he stayed the course. People like Muhammad Ali, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Jim Brown, B.B. King, and Sammy Davis Jr. who all knew Elvis Presley and were his friends all have spoken very highly of him and the person he was. Elvis Presley changed things, after Elvis black artists had more exposure to a wider multi racial audience and more radio airplay on white stations, this was all happening and set in motion before the civil rights movement and has been acknowledged by the Civil Rights Museum.

Absolutely! Elvis was born and raised in Tupelo's poor, predominately Black community! He was brought up on Black gospel and blues, it was embedded in his heart and soul as much as it was any other music-loving child from that location and era. It's not appropriation when you're part of a culture. And he never failed to acknowledge and honor who his musical influences were and why they were. He was just performing the songs he knew and loved. It wasn't his fault that the majority of White, middle-class society didn't care much about that genre of music until some relatively unknown kid with white skin was onstage singing and dancing to it. Then suddenly Black music--and by extension, Elvis himself--became a threat to the morals of their own precious White kids they wanted to keep separated and sheltered from any aspect of any culture other than the one in which they'd been raised.

The funny thing is that black people around the same era as Elvis were not about that "Elvis stole from blacks and never gave credit" cause they knew the truth, B.B King knew, Fats Domino knew, Sammy Davis Jr. knew, Muhammad Ali knew etc. it was only generations after who spun it like that and it's a shame that untrue image is still in the minds of many especially in the black culture.
I think a movie done right about Elvis is very needed cause people don't know who he truly was anymore.

Most people don't know enough about him. The guy was raised in a community where he was the minority. Look up the interview that Baz Luhrmann did with Elvis's best friend and neighbor Sam Bell. You will see that Elvis was not seen as a different race among those that he grew up with. Sam also details how Elvis often left his seat at church among the boys to get up and sing and dance. He has been on record many times giving credit to his roots. There is much truth out there but people have to be willing to seek instead of accepting punchlines.

I have seen many videos on this trailer in which young people have not done their research, or have been given false information. I am happy though that they are at the very least, wanting to learn who this great man was . I do thank you young men for trying to learn who he was, and for hopefully helping to keep his memory alive. I am glad someone mentioned the music here too. Austin Butler was only singing the 50's music, and his voice was blended with Elvis' voice for the rest of it. The cinematography here is spectacular. Costumes are authentic and as I watch, I am right back in the 50's , 60's and 70's!

    ***Reality check**
Elvis was not an R&B artist. he was never strictly one genre... never.
From the very beginning at Sun records in 1953, he ‘covered’ Country Music, Bluegrass, pop ballads, in addition toR&B. He desperately wanted to be another Dean Martin
He only got into trouble when he covered the R&B, but not from blacks so much as he did from whites for crossing the line. all he is remembered for is the R&B part, which is just a fraction of his catalog of music
His biggest influences were Bing Crosby & Dean Martin, white pop crooners. Likewise, Flatt & Scruggs, Hank Snow, and Hank Williams were big influences in country, in addition to RB, yet modern biographies seldom put any light on it. Check out Flatt/Scruggs Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and you'll hear some non R&B music that rocks! But they made Elvis out to be an R& B clone
He is solely credited with DEsegregating music via blending all of these genres and fighting the backlash in the media and in court. R&B artists suddenly were featured on tv & radio with great frequency because of Elvis. Like it or not, R&B changed after Elvis hit the scene, as did Country & pop
Also, all of his early hits, including the first one that brought him international stardom was NOT a recycled R&B cover song at all. It was freshly written for him. Heartbreak Hotel
Even Hound Dog, previously a hit by Mama Thorton, was written by a white songwriting duo, Lieber & Stoller. So now who’s stealing music? They wrote for so many R&B artists in the 50s & 60s. Did the R&B groups steal ?
Then there’s Sammy Davis, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, etc who did the same by covering white standards... & there’s nothing wrong with it
Even the musical instruments themselves were European inventions (sax, electric bass, electric guitar, etc). Are we only to permit people to use these instruments if they resemble the inventors? What about the phonograph itself?
Once any invention (a pill, a car , a phone, or a song etc) is out in public, we are all free to use it. Remember, it’s not Elvis fault for being born into a segregated society
Finally, when Elvis covered a song (R&B, Country, pop, etc) it was only AFTER the original artist already had their own hit with it
What’s being said here is, Elvis should not be allowed to record an R&B song. Like BBking & Mohammed said, Elvis just did everything better. I think that’s at the heart of it.

So.... Elvis's life in Tupelo, MS was one of great influence by the black community. .Not because he was standing off to the side watching.. but because he was a part of it... he went to black churches, sang the gospels with them, they were his playmates, he lived in what we would call the ghetto today. I want you to watch this video. This is Baz (director) interview a black gentleman who was one of E's good friends as a child. Elvis was just another kid in the neighborhood gang of black kids. What rubbed off on him was the same thing that rubbed off on the black children... it was natural and organic and something he couldn't get rid of even if he wanted to. Those who feel he "stole" anything from the black community simply dont know his actual story. This video will educate you. Lots of surprises in it and you can tell it was used for biopic info. There are many accuracies and inaccuracies in the biopic... it's a movie after all but the fundamental parts are accurate. Watch this... ua-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/v-deo.html

Correction: Elvis' so called "manager" (Colonel Tom Parker) did not discover him. Not only was he not a real Colonel, but an illegal immigrant from the Netherlands with a shady past who settled in the southern U.S. and was a carnival barker among other things. Elvis was "discovered" at Sun Recording Studio in his home town of Memphis TN in 1953 at the age of 18 by Sam Phillips who was looking for a white singer who sounded black, so he could get the black sound he admired onto the airwaves and introduce it to white culture. When Elvis started taking the world by storm, Parker took notice and latched onto him, signing him to big contracts, getting him exposed on TV, and making movies. So in the beginning he was good for Elvis, but in the 60's he had Elvis doing nothing but a lot of crappy movies with crappy soundtracks. Elvis hated them because he was not using his talent. But Parker, who was really just a "promoter" not a manager in the real sense, just cared about the money and not his artist and he held Elvis back. Elvis never toured outside the U.S. because of Parker's illegal status (fearful of not being allowed back into the U.S. due to not having a passport). Elvis, getting restless and wanting to perform live again, fulfilled his contracts in the late 60's and did just that. The entertainment world had never witnessed anything like it, as he broke all attendance records & people from all over the world descended on Las Vegas and traveled to see his concerts including famous stars and dignitaries etc. Parker kept him on a grueling schedule ,(which would be unheard of today), in order to cover his own gambling debts. In the meantime, Elvis had gone through a divorce and had developed some painful medical conditions. Although he began using prescription drugs, (not street drugs-they were all prescribed by doctors) as early as the 60's, he began depending on them more and more until he became addicted. His poor health and the drugs took their toll and he passed away in his bathroom at Graceland on 8/16/77 at the age of 42 on the eve before his next tour was to begin. The entire world mourned his death. Now, almost 45 years later, this extraordinary man is still loved and honored, as it should be.
Elvis expressed many times through the years that he felt he would be forgotten. There is a line in the trailer when he says, "I'm going to be 40 soon, and no one will remember me." ELVIS WE REMEMBER YOU, AND WE ALWAYS WILL!! RIP, E.P.

I saw Elvis in concert in 1970 and he was the first superstar that was popular not only in America but all over the world, his Hawaii concert was beamed by satellite and billions watched. The excitement that he could generate on stage was electric, he had a mystic about him and a love for entertaining that made his concerts exciting. I hope you young men will be curious enough to look into his music and his backstory.

I would like to see you guys back AFTER the movie screens. By then you will have learned that Elvis ALWAYS gave credit to the African American performers who influenced him. Elvis is quoted as saying God made TWO mistakes when He made him … He didn’t make him black and he didn’t make him a bass singer. It is sad that Elvis is so misrepresented in terms of his respect for the black community, a community he was an integral part of growing up in Tupelo, MS, and the falsehood that he “stole” their music. As BB King said, on that topic “once something has been exposed (in music) anyone can take from it and add to it. They didn’t make a mistake when they called him the King”. BB King is a black musician who owns/owned a club on Beale Street Memphis and knew Elvis before the fame. He admired Elvis greatly.

I am very glad the man on the left mentioned the BLACK culture... I am black and I don't think black culture is mad at Elvis because he did give credit to the black artist who's music he adopted, I think black poeple are mad at the INDUSTRY. Because the industry did not want to give black artist a platform and then Elvis came and sang the same songs they did and they made him the face of Rock and Roll, Rock and Roll started with black people but it was basically taken over by an industry that wanted to erase them from it and Elvis was the perfect person to use for such a thing. Elvis HIMSELF never wanted that and made sure he gave love to the people who raised him in music, BLACK ARTISTS. Artists like BB King and Little Richard. But I am glad the guy on the left was brave enough to mention that... it doesn't make you woke, it just makes you knowledgable. Amazing reaction.

I don't know whether or not it's Austin Butler (who was great casting for a lot of reasons) singing as Elvis; even with his perfect impersonation. He has been able to sing in 'general' though for, at least as long as I've known who he is. He played a character called James for a little bit on a tv series called "Zoey 101" which was quite well-made - well that's the main thing that comes to my mind when I think about him. He's naturally a blonde. And he dated Vanessa Hudgens for a fair amount of time also. (Those are the only 'interesting enough' facts I can provide). - But love your enthusiasm guys. This should be a remarkable film.

I think its a misconception that black artists dont love Elvis. Im sure some are uneducated on his life and at the time and still now assume he stole something but artists of the time like James Brown (called Elvis his brother/ was inconsolable at his wake and stayed longer than anyone), BBKing, Little Richard… they all gave Elvis his props. He also refused to olay in venues that wouldn’t allow his black band members. Imagine the pressure from Colonel Parker his manager to not care as well… I just feel like they felt the culture of america was hypocritical for accepting Elvis but still trying to segregate music… He opened alot of doors for black artists as well… and he under the table looked after some of those who fell on hard times. He went to segregated events in the black community because it didnt matter to him. Those parts of town was his home. He grew up in that community like alot of poor white people did… So im very happy that he is being represented correctly and as a pioneer of social change and human equality.

Thanks for the info! Doing a bit of research on this topic it seems to me that in today’s world, there are some people who understand the relationship back then, have this perspective. But just because it was years ago the narrative changes in people’s minds today. What I mentioned in this video is not really my opinion, but rather what a large group of modern black America thinks of Elvis today. I appreciate you explaining this.
