Every time You say, "That is Fire!" I want to say, no kidding Sir! You are now a Rush Fan! Welcome, Brother! I am a lifelong Rush fan, bass player, and U.S.M.C. Combat Veteran!
I like your “bass” 🎸 Pro Shop hat! 😆 You really don’t need to apologize to the RUSH fans. We have spent a very significant amount of time listening to their stuff over and over. Hundreds, if not thousands of times over the decades for some songs. We are the RUSH geeks, we are the RUSH ARMY!
I love both Rush and Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. A win/win. This one has some similar elements to Roll the Bones, released two years following this song in 1991. Also: Requests for Bruce Springsteen - Meeting Across The River (studio) Jungleland (live video)
First song ever I learned the best I could on bass was of all songs was La Villa. Imagine that. Heck it was all by ear, and couldn't afford Tab magazines to grab Tabs. Way before UA-cam.
Just about every song they did in 40 years of recorded history was 'different for Rush'. 'Presto', 'Hold Your Fire' and 'Roll the Bones' are all superb albums, underrated in the Rush canon.
@@mark-be9mq Absolutely, but now, decades later, it's also about evolving beyond the same, tired, cliched old slogans (iT's dA kEyBoArDs!) people reel out and recognising brilliance when you hear it.

My friend, your musical ear and ability as a musician are exceptional. I love how you hear a Rush lick and just pick up your bass and play it, just from hearing it. Bravo!! Love your passion Church Boy.
This song is from their Presto album (my favorite) produced by Rupert Hine. Rupert took them into a whole new direction, more tight and precise. So many great songs, Presto, razors edge, available light & more.
Geddy is playing a Wal Bass on this album. He did from 1985-1992. Check out the live performance of him playing YYZ from 1988’s “A Show Of Hands” to see him playing this bass. This version you can hear all of their parts clearly and very defined. Emotion Detector off Power Windows, Turn The Page, Mission and Open Secrets off of Hold Your Fire
Thank you for this reaction. I remember when this song came out. I felt like Rush came back from a long excursion. After Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, and Hold Your Fire, the Presto album returned rush away from the heavy keyboard production and brought Geddy back to the bass god that we always knew he was. As a drummer myself, I really appreciate how the main riff that you and I love so much has the snare drum back beat on count 3 for the first 2 measures then counts 2 and 4 on the second 2 measures. There is a push and pull roller coaster effect between all the instruments and I remember asking myself, "How did they come up with this?" After repeated listens, I realize that the guitar was the initial instrument that inspired the drums and bass to flesh it out, so hats off to Alex Lifeson for his creativity. Still, thanks for this reaction and all your other Rush reactions. There is no such thing as a bad Rush song. I look forward to you reacting to some of the earlier works from Fly By Night and Hemispheres and more. Geddy's bass work is nothing less than phenomenal. Thank you.
Tell you what you missed? But that's part of the beauty in listening to Rush. You cannot possibly pick it all up at once. You have to listen to them over and over to really enjoy the whole thing! 😊
Great song! Great reaction! I remember when this song debuted in late 1989. Rush were slowly transitioning out of their keyboard/synthesizer phase and started bringing Alex's guitar back to the forefront. Luv the channel BTW. I've been playing Rush songs on guitar for years and I'm also a bit of a music theory nerd. You're spot on when you mention the key, chord progressions, modes, etc.... I've jammed with many church musicians over the years and they have the best ears for picking up music on the fly.
Rush experimented with different styles and producers through the decades, I think you should do early Rush next. 2112 all of first side at once, Second side all fantastic singles!
You should definitely check out Red Barchetta from their Moving Pictures album. A favorite of many Rush fans. It tells a futuristic story about when cars are banned, but a man's uncle reveals a beautiful sports car he has hidden on an abandoned farm. Needless to say, the man starts taking the car out for a spin and discovers the thrill and joy of driving in his uncle's Red Barchetta, but ends up being chased by authorities and has to make a run for it to get back to his uncle's farm. Very interesting story. The music is amazing and very well written - it starts out with a beautiful, slow melody, then builds up to some really cool riffs, has a beautiful guitar solo by Lifeson, more cool and kickin' riffs, and then gently tones it down with a beautiful, dreamy outro with tasteful bass playing and Alex's dreamy guitar playing. I think you'll love it. It's my favorite song.
Neil based the song on a short story named “A Nice Morning Drive” written by Robert Foster. Peart being an avid reader based many lyrics on poems and short stories. Neil was great for giving fans very unique lyrics rather than the same old love story after love story. Rush proved that songs can be based on life experiences other than young love.
Actually, most people think Red Barchetta is simply about a joy ride, but there's way more content in that song. The article that the song is based off explains the story better, but in a dystopian future, certain cars are banned (the Motor Law). Only certain government issued, bloated, SUV type vehicles were permitted on the road (the alloy air cars). The drivers of these alloy vehicles were encouraged to run all banned vehicles off the road, hence the chase at the end of the song. It's been years since I read the original article, but I believe that's how the story went.
Fairly new to your channel, and a lifelong Rush fan (saw them 12 times) I could be jaded about the literally hundreds of Rush reactions I’ve watched, but I really enjoy your energy. The fact that you pick up the bass in the middle of songs and play it back is a plus, not a hindrance. You bring a lot of knowledge and perspective without being preachy or “stuffy academic.” If you’re ever in Birmingham, look me up.

You can’t stop and you shouldn’t stop. Limelight and 2112! 2112 will put a new crease in your brain. 🧠 It’s a half concept album. It’s their early masterpiece. Very serious RUSH. 20+ minutes, I believe for that first side of the record that’s known as 2112. The flip side of the album had single songs that new fans should not ignore. It’s from their weed era! Ha Ha! You will get to it, it’s inevitable. RUSH used a lot of different techniques and musical styles but it’s always unmistakably RUSH. We can’t wait for your 2112 reaction! Do the studio version as opposed to live for the first time. There’s a version with animation that’s cool. You’ll see. You WILL see! 😆 Classic 70’s Space Rock! 🙀🪐
This album from Rush…. Was a welcomed departure from where they were heading. Grace under pressure to power windows and peaking with Hold your fire…. Although great albums, some fans were looking cockeyed at them for the pastel direction their music was turning. This album was a welcome return to three guys and three instruments.
Geddy’s tone in this era of Rush was driven by a few things, but most important among them was his use of the hand made Wal basses with thinner gauge flat wound strings. While it’s not not nearly as aggressive and lacks the deep low growl of a Fender jazz, its mid range tone is amongst the best I’ve ever heard and lend itself to clear articulation. Love the Wal. If you like this bass sound and tone, give a listen to the track Open Secrets from the album Hold Your Fire. Keep up the great reactions, and your mission, if you choose to accept, is to learn this one and play along!!!!! Challenge issued!
great song from the Album Presto. On my journey, I had this whole album on replay for a while. Of course, I can say the same for most of Rush's catalog :) Rush and Iron Maiden are my favorite bands and both are very bass driven (Geddy Lee and Steve Harris). Enjoy your journey! Cheers!
As they put out new albums, even us diehard fans were usually surprised by at least one song on the album that we never saw coming or anticipated. That was part of the fresh fun even if it took a few listens, but you can say that about a lot of songs. We never knew which direction they were going to go, we just knew it was going to be RUSH.
Thanks for getting to another Rush song. I am glad you are going to continue reacting to Rush, as I find these videos quite enjoyable. Also there is soo much great music from this band, you have just barely begun the journey. For example this song, which you seemed to like, is Ranked #57 on the list of top 100 Rush songs. Just imagine how much more there is for you to discover and enjoy! You have already chosen 2 songs I have suggested so I will let others guide your journey further.
I'm one of the few who loved Geddy's Wal bass period. I always thought certain songs didn't sound right without it and wished every tour he'd rotate it in, but he never did after the Counterparts tour.
Remember distinctly hearing this song in the fall of 89' driving to work for a 3rd shift job on 99.7 the Fox in Charlotte NC...in those days you only knew the album release date and waited for the first single to be played on the radio and hoped you would here it several times before album release...this song created so much anticipation for Presto for me. Listened to it non stop for months and was able to attend the opening night of the tour in Feb. 90' in Greenville SC...one of my fave memories of my Rush fandom🤘
@@markandersen5187,Thanks man, it’s been a while. You are right. I only saw that tour once. I forgot the song on which album, but I remember that show! Me, 2 cool friends and a very cute girl. We had second row! One of the best concerts! It’s been decades since I’ve listened to Presto, maybe I should change that. I remember they had huge inflatable rabbits, one on each side of the stage! 😆
I totally understand bro Alex is riffs regarding show don't tell on his Gibson Les Paul is really amazing he has really lightning reflexes and it can keep up with the base in the drummer
You're a character Church Boy, in the best possible way! Watching you react is conjuring up an image of the scene in the Blues Brothers when Joliet Jake 'Sees the light' with brother James at the pulpit surrounded by the church band, chorus.
So cool to revisit this music with someone that knows music. Your comments are bang on!!! Very cool. Please go back to Signal album and listen to the Weapon Live In Toronto 1984 (2021 HD Remaster)...mind blowing!!!
Geddy is playing a Wal bass during this period between 1985 and the early 90's. He would transition back to his '72 Fender Jazz bass on the 1993 album Counterparts and stick with it for the duration until the band's retirement. The Jazz has a more beastly growly tone to it when compared to the 'popcorn' tone of the Wal.
@@russelschultz Perhaps, but it was a lousy sounding bass for Rush. Weak with no bottom end. I thought the Steinberger sounded better. Even Geddy tired of the Wal after a while. The Rics, Fender Precision and Jazz basses were still the best.
As a bass player myself, I love the bass lines on this (well, on all of them to be honest), but man, there is a clarity of attack on the drums by Neil on this album that is unparalleled.
ok, we know you dig the music… and so do we. but watch the cartoon video of 2112, and pay attention to the lyrical story. as much as RUSH is musically amazing, when you listen to every song’s story, it just proves they’re aliens. 😂 Neil is genius. greatest drummer ever and a lyricist to boot. crazy combo. the stars were aligned when these guys met.
A lot of their songs - no matter when they were released - are still extremely relevant today. Consider this song in our current "social media" environment. The algorithms show you exactly what you're looking for, catering to your already established preconceptions and prejudices without bringing forward the opposing viewpoint. You think a certain way, follow a certain belief, vote a certain party - and when you hit a search engine or scan your UA-cam/Instagram/Twitter(X)/TruthSocial/Facebook feeds - you get mainly info that already reinforces your view. It demonizes the opposition by filtering it out. No facts that challenge your belief, which makes you believe it even more. We get into the habit of taking what we see/read at face value without question. I think Neil Peart was a prophet when he wrote these lyrics - listen to the song again with an ear towards social media, and you'll see what I mean. Don't just take my word for it.
trick to listening to rush is to start early and end late... they played longer as a single group than almost any other group... their music styles changed greatly from 70s till they stopped... almost every album has a story line.. some of my favorites are... trees.... mystic rythums... freewill... tom sawyer... and red barcheta...
There's a reason we refer to it as the "Rush rabbit hole"...there's more of an Alice in Wonderland allegory there than one might expect...They always sound like Rush but no two albums really sound the same. I really consider them as being kind of their own genre.
@@thatsnice99why not just let people ask for what THEY love and keep your negativity to yourself? No need for you to listen to one you don’t like man. The list you gave separately has some great ones and a couple that aren’t my favourites but I appreciate you putting out there what YOU dig. Keep doing that! 😀
@@MJS-ON I’m h it’s not negatively. TSS is a horrible song which set Rush back 10 yrs. Please don’t steer this highly knowledgeable person up to have him pretend TSS is good as he tried to do with this song. I want to POSITIVELY point him in the right direction.
@user-bv4rx6hz5e Please don't waste your time arguing with thatsnice99. He's nothing more than a troll who thinks that his opinions are superior to those of the rest of the world, and he has consistently trashed Time Stand Still while true Rush fans like myself appreciate its deep lyrics. If he's not even smart enough to recognize that whenever he clicks on a particular clip so he can trash it, UA-cam's algorithm regards it as just another hit so future reactors will see it as one they should react to, then he's not really worth our time and energy. Have a great evening, and remember: don't feed the trolls!!
@@lindaward5376 Hi Linda. I can’t argue with you. I have tried a few times to, in a positive way, get Billy (thatsnice99) to be more open to other people’s preferences and simply offer the ones he likes, rather than criticizing. Hasn’t worked once so, you are probably right, I will ignore him from now on.
This is from the Presto album. Rush changed with the times but always sounded like Rush. Expect the unexpected. Cut to the chase is another one to check. It is another 90's song and another banger!
The Presto album saw Rush bring a little more aggression back into the guitar and drumming from their albums since Moving Pictures. Alex's guitars are more forward in the mix, Geddy is riffing like a madman on the bass and the synths became more of a padding to fill out the music instead of being a featured instrument. Neil had been reinventing his drumming with new teachers and inspirations and his lyrics became way more personally philosophical and introspective.
This album was supposed to be their return to a more classic Rush sound (read: Alex wouldn't shut up), but a lot of folks consider it a transistional album. I'm a drummer and loved Neil's work here, and the biggest accusation would be the production was 'thin'. Don't care, I love the album. Great Eddie Murphy laugh, btw. 🤘🥁
Always here for my favourite Rush reactor. You mentioned Springsteen's voice. Suggestion, for a change of pace: Iron Sky by Paulo Nutini, from the live Abbey Road sessions. If I were a betting man, I'd you'll LOVE IT. ;)
Ok so now that you followed this recommendation ( I’m a drummer by the way) I hope you will follow my next suggestion which is The big money. On that note, I would recommend you listen to one of my favourite Rush song which is on the same album as Show don’t tell…. And that song is Available light. That song, since Neil’s passing as me shedding a tear every time I listen to it. The lyrics are poignant and Geddy Lee gives his absolute best and most heartfelt vocal performance ever!!! It’s a different brand of Rush and a very unique tune, but that’s why I love it so much. But first, The big money !!!😂😂😂
BTW, The big money is on the same record as Marathon and Territories which I know you liked. The bass is ridiculous on that album bro, it's stupid good !!! Can't believe he manages to sing over his bass in that song.

Classic 70’s Space Rock!
Great song, and the
Drum work at the end, great stuff.
You're my favorite Rush reaction channel, keep em coming 👍 "a reaction just for youuuuu"
Totally enjoying your Rush reactions! Fire.
great song from the Album Presto.
Yeah thank you bro !!! Happy you gave it a go !!!!
It’s long but 2112 is what propelled the band to the next level and worth a listen for all potential die hard fans
Hold Your Fire album, 1988? I think. Saw this tour twice! 2 cities in my state, one day apart!
Presto 89'
@@markandersen5187,Thanks man, it’s been a while. You are right. I only saw that tour once. I forgot the song on which album, but I remember that show! Me, 2 cool friends and a very cute girl. We had second row! One of the best concerts!
It’s been decades since I’ve listened to Presto, maybe I should change that. I remember they had huge inflatable rabbits, one on each side of the stage! 😆
Reactions from musicians are always the best kind.
I totally understand bro Alex is riffs regarding show don't tell on his Gibson Les Paul is really amazing he has really lightning reflexes and it can keep up with the base in the drummer
The last song in this album is a little known ABSOLUTELY AMAZING song that does NOT get the love it deserves. Take a listen and marvel.
The saint turns to sin !!!
You're a character Church Boy, in the best possible way! Watching you react is conjuring up an image of the scene in the Blues Brothers when Joliet Jake 'Sees the light' with brother James at the pulpit surrounded by the church band, chorus.
the intro off beat stuff is really cool... have not heard this in a awhile.. thanks
Nothing cuts through the mix like that Wal though.
@@russelschultz Perhaps, but it was a lousy sounding bass for Rush. Weak with no bottom end. I thought the Steinberger sounded better. Even Geddy tired of the Wal after a while. The Rics, Fender Precision and Jazz basses were still the best.
@@russelschultz The strings were an extremely light gauge, more akin to piano strings, actually.
In the Church Boys eyes Rush remains undefeated. 😂
As a bass player myself, I love the bass lines on this (well, on all of them to be honest), but man, there is a clarity of attack on the drums by Neil on this album that is unparalleled.
awesome song
ok, we know you dig the music… and so do we. but watch the cartoon video of 2112, and pay attention to the lyrical story. as much as RUSH is musically amazing, when you listen to every song’s story, it just proves they’re aliens. 😂 Neil is genius. greatest drummer ever and a lyricist to boot. crazy combo. the stars were aligned when these guys met.
Back on the RUSH wagon nice to see.
They make changes to their sound each album, but still remain RUSH.
What a song beautiful guitar beautiful bass beautiful drums beautiful keyboards
Violent Femes add it up great bass grove!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
❤❤❤
🙏❤🌹 Neil 🌹❤🙏
I dig your bass playing!
You might like Scars from this era.
and The Pass. my God this is a good song. that base. boom boom boom mmmm
Geddys tone is 🔥 on this album.
There's a reason we refer to it as the "Rush rabbit hole"...there's more of an Alice in Wonderland allegory there than one might expect...They always sound like Rush but no two albums really sound the same. I really consider them as being kind of their own genre.
Time Stand Still' Please. One of their best, in me opinion. Cheers!
Please no
@@thatsnice99why not just let people ask for what THEY love and keep your negativity to yourself?
If you find time ,watch
" Dinner with Rush"
You will enjoy who they are in private.
Great vid,loved your reaction👌
This is from the Presto album.
Rush changed with the times but always sounded like Rush.
Expect the unexpected.
Cut to the chase is another one to check. It is another 90's song and another banger!
The Pass from that album ..... a must
The Trees Live Exit Stage left!!!!
1989 Presto album, Power Windows preceded it in 1985 if memory serves.
Hold your Fire
And PRESTO!!
Please do Limelight from Rush! Studio version
Geddy Lee ladies and gentlemen. Geddy Lee
Time stand still is a great RUSH tune
Always here for my favourite Rush reactor.
You mentioned Springsteen's voice.
Suggestion, for a change of pace: Iron Sky by Paulo Nutini, from the live Abbey Road sessions.
If I were a betting man, I'd you'll LOVE IT. ;)
Just watching your face during the bass run was priceless. 🐵
But first, The big money !!!😂😂😂
that whole album is FIRE!
BTW, The big money is on the same record as Marathon and Territories which I know you liked. The bass is ridiculous on that album bro, it's stupid good !!! Can't believe he manages to sing over his bass in that song.
