      PewdsXCutieMarzia I know I'm late but the game hints that in real life her father sexually abuses her. The lily represents her virginity and innocence, I think the seeds are a euphemism for semen, so when Boaris asks to trade your petal for a seed, it represents how her father sexually abuses her.
      I don't really understand most of the endings either, but I think the good ending is Mari standing up for herself.

      Emily Clark you are correct, actually. The good ending is where Mary runs away from the shadow figure and touches paintings in order to escape it, in order to get into a secret room, where she can unlock the door to reality. When she is awake she unlocks the door in her room. That's good ending. However, the door in the debug room has three locks, and if you can't open the door, the freaky shadow comes and jumpscares you

    It's her father who abused her. If you listen to the radio completely and study the version of Sleeping Beauty in her dream, it's made a bit more clear. Her uncle is represented by the penguin. She also lived in the mansion with a tutor and a maid, represented by the fox and the rabbit. The boar is her father, and yes, when he asks her to take his seed, the innuendo is perfectly intentional.

    I think that the only reason that the fox and rabbit were so awful when you lost the game is that possibly they were murdered by her father, meaning that "the end'' was less remembering their personalities, and more the fear in her heart when he killed them in front of her. The only reason the penguin is still alive is because he is traveling and does not know what is happening to Mari, it also explains why in the worst ending where they recite the poem and there is blood everywhere you see the outlines of the fox and rabbit, but not the penguin.

    I believe it was the dad that abused Mari due to:
    Mari being locked in her room due to her dad.
    Mari`s mom stating how she will try to save Mari and herself (an abusive relationship).
    The fact that the song name for when Mari is chased by the monster is entitled `BADDAD` in the file registry.

    • @simcoll1
      @simcoll1 10 років тому +188

      Actually it's entitled BADDAD because it's actually just a set of chords being played repeatedly which is B-A-D-D-A-D but yeah that's actually also one of the reasons. And Mari's mother could be dead actually, from what I gather she could fell too deep into her dreams never to wake up again which makes either she's in a coma or dead one of those two.

    I don't think the uncle is the one abusing her, if the story is about molestation like you suspect. All the references to him are positive, and he gives you the bonus code to use the energy ball at the end. I think Pen Guindel might be a dream representation of the uncle. Guindel could be an alternate spelling of Gwendel, He's also the one who tells us to find the angel, and the only animal that doesn't seem happy about taking our petal. Plus we know Uncle Gwendel gave Mary books and a stuffed doll that looks like it could be a penguin. I'm betting the father is the abuser since it's implied that it was him who locked Marry in her room. He's probably represented by the boar.

    Some comments about the animals and what they may represent:
    Spoiler
    If you remain in each of the three puzzle rooms for about 15 seconds after the animals disappear, you will notice a creepy black & white static image in each of them. Each image will blink then disappear for the next 15 seconds, so it's kind of tricky to make it out.
    Spoiler
    In the bunny room, there's an image of a maid falling down, presumably about to crash into the ground killing herself, or already dead. In the penguin room, there is a decapitated male body in the armchair. In the fox room, there is a body of an elegant woman who looks as if she was covered in blood and had her eyes gouged out.
    I wonder if this may be a hint that the animals represent the people the psychotic father murdered in real life? It would correspond with the toys/items ripped to shreds in the dark version of the hallway. It might also explain why none of the people from Mari's life (the maid, the private tutor and the woman in the bar - I haven't found any hint as to who she was, Dora's suggestion seems likely) intervened in the sexual abuse. The ending song lyrics suggest that the father was not only sexually interested, but heavily obsessed with Mari so given the fact they live in a desolate mansion (as per radio message), it seems likely that he resorted to murder to keep the girl for himself.
    Also, Boaris's facial expression when he tries to persuade Mary to accept his "seed" is ominously similar to that of her father's in the brief jump scare that happens after you leave the dark hallway for the first time.
    Finally, the "good" ending leaves me wondering if Mari's mother is really deceased or only deep in coma, suffering the very fate Mari is trying to avoid.
    It may be a bit far-fetched, but... the angel has a voice of a mature female and guides Mari through her nightmare to the dream inhabitants' dismay, as if she knew very well how dreams work and as if she wasn't part of this one. Can the angel be Mari's mother in coma communicating with he daughter through the dream world? She does, after all, mention the key she herself needs to find to escape.

    So I have this theory that the penguin is Mary's uncle. Not a representation of him, but actually her real Uncle. If you get his seed without giving up your petal, he refers to you as "Mari", which is her real name in the waking world. As far as I remember, he is the only one to do so except for the angel fish, who is definitely the mother.
    Added to that, if you keep clicking on the radio in the first room, you will eventually be told that in this world, people have magical abilities passed down through family lines, and Mary got her powers from her mother. I don't think we ever find out whether her uncle was brother to Mari's mother or father, so it's not too much of a stretch to assume that he was biologically related to the mother, and therefore inherited the same dream-altering powers as she and Mari did.

    • @BeanieBabyXx
      @BeanieBabyXx 4 роки тому +133

      I know this was six years ago but I have to reply with my opinion cause I have a little more to add. I think these characters are representations but as the way Mary interprets them so each character is different. I won't go into who Boaris is cause we all know who he is.
      Bunnilda was obviously Mari's maid in the waking world so was obviously a present in the house a lot. She probably knew about the abuse happening in the household but felt powerless to stop it at risk of being fired or being seen as a liar.
      Penn Guindel is of course her uncle who seems to be absent physically from Mari's life but wrote to her in letters so she probably spoke to him a lot in those. He's kind to her but oblivious to the abuse as he's not there to see it so he can't stop it in anyway.
      Foxanne is (as we presume) Mari's tutor who probably came to the house to teach her (not very well due to the games they play together). This may be because Mari's father may have not wanted her leaving the house to go to school and maybe tell a teacher. This must mean that Foxanne probably knows about the abuse too but doesn't do anything to stop it either for some of the same reasons as Bunnilda.
      Now there may be a reason why Bunnilda and Foxanne go mean and evil when you get the questions wrong but Penn Guindel remains calm and nice. Mari may see the bunny and fox in the waking world as people who can help her due to their knowledge of the abuse but are unwilling to so her perspective of them is warped so when they take the flower petals, they get mean. The penguin however is nice because her uncle is unaware of the abuse, shows incredible care to Mari and Mari knows that if he knew about the abuse, he would help her and put a stop to it. I think that's why they act in different ways.

      @@BeanieBabyXx honestly I thought the fox was a bit more, suspicious? Than the others. Not as bad as the boar (for obvious reasons), but the fact that she was the first to say "go to him later" and "ignore the subconcious dream symbolism" as her first interaction gave me some retroactive, "uh oh. Maybe she knew but ignored it." thoughts. The symbolism/stereotype of a fox (usually characterized as sly, selfish, cruel, etc) vs a bunny (cutsey, fluffy, herbivoire as innocence) or a penguin (clumsy, bumbling, sweet) could also be a such hint, especially from a childish perspective. Though i could be reading too much into this.

    Fun fact: the animals are all coded in certain ways. The dream animals are all coded to be soft and sweet. They’re soft lines, small expressions, lots of rounded lines/shapes and pastel colors. They talk cordially as if addressing a friend/madam of the house. Boris is contrasted by sharp lines, slimy talk, and wider mouth. His entire character is sharp lines, his collar, his tusks, his fur. Even if you didn’t hear their blatant dialogue, you could reasonably surmise Boaris is the enemy.

    I think the solution of the plot is a lot simpler than people are making out. Everyone is saying she's afraid to go out, afraid to unlock the door and leave her home, but she honestly didn't have the physical key. The game tells us that the father locked her in that room, and that she won't be able to leave until he comes home, perhaps to keep her from running away or getting help. He's also into taxidermy, which is kinda weird and out of place. If the animals were meant to represent people she knew, then I'm quite certain he's Boaris, or perhaps that shadowy figure chasing her if we assume that it's not one in the same, though I doubt it since the shadow was standing where the boar's head is. If the father is abusing her, whether it be sexual or otherwise, then the theory that both are a symbol of her fear still works. The mom is assumedly either dead or in a coma judging by the memory text displayed upon reading one of her old book, and was probably the angel fish. The penguin was the uncle, which explains why he was the only one truly regretful for having to take a petal away, as he actually cared for her. I have no idea about the rabbit and fox, though.

      Reading your post (albeit nearly a decade later) it occurred to me that even if Mari had escaped, it's possible it wouldn't have done her any good. If she's in a mansion then that means her father is very rich - and powerful in the community. If he owns the police then they'd simply return her to him. And he in turn would be far worse to Mari then he already was, if such a thing were possible.

    I think the key in the game is reference to that. Mari is trying to get the key, which represents control of her life, back from her abuser.

    To people who doesn't know: the author said there is going to be a *sequel* for this game, but *it follows the True Ending* (the one you get if you follow Boaris, but you keep 2 petals). (Xe also said we aren't going to take control of Mary/Mari, but of another character.)
    It's a pity it doesn't follow the Good one (the one where Mari goes out of her room), IMO. ^w^;

    This game is the embodiment of 'There is more than what meets the eye' it seems.
    From what I got from the game, I'm thinking that Mari is controlled by her Father. The rabbit and the fox were used as ways to install fear in her maybe. With their dead corpses I can only assume that's a metaphor of him exacting some sort of violence to ensure fear is placed in her? Like a warning of 'if you leave or defy me this is what will happen?'' Or they could represent people she knew that were her friends or were close to her that got hurt when she told them about what was going on with her? It could explain why all three animals turn into those weird ghost shadows.
    I think the boar represents her father's presence. He doesn't present riddles like the other three and he is a 'predator' compared to the other three animals. He even refuses to give Mari his seed unless she gives him her petal unlike the other three that presented a challenge to her.
    The penguin really seems to be the only ally she has and represents her uncle I think....He's the only one who gives her advice to find the angel and also the only one who doesn't turn twisted. I can also assume he's her uncle as he was also helping her mom-The woman who wrote the letter to Glenn. That and also in the real world the penguin is the only animal that is in her possession which was given by her uncle.
    Just throwing out what I thought, but overall this game is rather cutesy and disturbing which will completely ensure I won't sleep a wink tonight! Keep up the breakthroughs Manly!

      I also thought the Penguin might've been the Uncle since they both like books. Someone pointed out the shadow's theme song is BADDAD so that pretty much confirms it's the father.
      There's interesting stuff in the bonus area that mentions how the original game was based around the mother saving Mari so I think some of the dialogue from her is reference to that. It seems lucid dream walking powers are a family trait.

    • @13deathKISS
      @13deathKISS 10 років тому +44

      Having that as a family trait would be scary in my opinion. Ha ha.
      It just hit me how also at first I thought this story would be close to Alice in Wonderland, but now it makes more sense with Sleeping Beauty. Especially with the open story book having that story read.
      Mainly because of what Beauty's father did to her while she slept. Sleeping is the 'best' escape from reality, but even that is dangerous and you can't depict reality from your dreams.
      A lot of this reminds me of Yume Nikki, symbolism wise. It makes it really interesting.

    It sounds like the person hurting her was her father, considering he locked her in and it led deeper into the nightmare when she waited for him. There's also the fact that her uncle gave her the only "friend" (the penguin) who remained a friend and tried to help her out of the dream with hints. He also gave her the only way of protecting herself.
    There's also the hints that her mother was once in the same dream/nightmare but didn't manage to escape and was lost, leaving Mari to fend for herself.

    Bunnilda tells a story about a man who was loved by two women.
    Maybe the goddess of love symbolises her mother and the goddess of the underworld her father's lover.
    Penn Guindel symbolises her supportive uncle. He want's her to get out and escape from home and tries his best to lift her morale. Ana could be Mary's mother/his sister. I guess he couldn't save her.
    Foxanne may represent the said lover. She entertains Mary halfheartedly, get's agitated quickly and got a drinking problem.
    Boaris represents her abusive father.
    I have no idea what the ghosts could represent. They all died?
    At least that's what I think.^^

  • @youjtw
    @youjtw 10 років тому +92

    It's not the Uncle who moslested her. The Uncle was the one who gave Mary the books and the penguin doll, the same penguin who helps Mary during the dream; the other three characters, Maid, Mother and Tutour are female which means she was molested by her FATHER. The same father who locks her in her room for god knows how long. The same father, who like the king, "gathered his fruits of love" from sleeping beauty.

    Fun(?) Fact, the song that plays when The Chaser is coming after you is titled "BADDAD" in the fandom because of the cords playing in the background that continuously loop (Being B. A. D. D. A. D.).
    Also, though I am unsure how true this is, there may be lyrics to the song as well, going like this:
    "He's Coming
    He's Always Chasing you"
    "Good girl, Sweet Girl.
    My sweet girl, you are mine" (Crying in the background)
    "GET OUT OF HERE"
    "He's Coming"
    "'You are MINE' he says. 'You are MINE' he says"
    "He's always chasing you"
    "He's gonna come"
    "He's Coming"
    "GET OUT OF HERE"

    _As I started to watch last night, I felt I probably shouldn't see this before sleeping_
    Children’s stories can be dangerous things, as are so many things in a child’s world. The dark undertone of the game made me remember the old Italian version of "Sleeping Beauty" which saw her raped by the king as she slept. I felt all the characters, cocktail lounge, & forest with dangling spiders (hate them!) were creepy, especially Boaris.
    What a pity that we have to associate sweet words for little girls like darling & dear with a pedophile. “We will have our own special time later” & “do more _pleasurable_ things together". That is true horror with a true monster.
    Mari & her mother were abused by her father.... as her mother couldn't help, Mari had to find a way to "escape" through her dreams. The fragile petals of a lily were a pretty metaphor for purity... so one by one, her innocence was lost.
    If within her dreams she could escape to safety, then she could resign herself to her waking fate - a harsh sad reality of abuse. If she could solve life's puzzles & escape her dream pursuer... well, it is still just a dream. Could she escape or did she just dream it all?
    It was an interesting game... No matter how gently touched or handled though, the subject matter of abuse is a sad & difficult one. Very nicely played.

    • @guydoingnothingreal

      Hard to tell if she did or didn't escape. If the whole thing was a dream, then it's like Yonaka sleeping or comatose while the Mogeko King molests her. Mary or Mari is molested but escapes reality by dreaming. It was a sad game. Happy games don't have as emotional a story though. =)

      Well, you may want to either lower the volume and turn on all the lights in your room (to feel safe) when the video gets around the part Mari enters into the dream version of her "real" bedroom. It's noticeable as less pink and fluffy. It's a very gradual transition into the scary parts, but I'd say it's around that time in the video shit starts getting creepy with the music and atmosphere. And it gets worse as ManlyBadassHero replays the game (the repeated parts are cut out) and newer and darker scenes are shown. There's a part where a creepy face appears on the screen and later a tall figure begins chasing after Mari while you can hear the words, "He's coming, he's coming" being whispered loudly. Omg. :| I had to cover the screen during those parts because I was super freaked out. I would list the video times for the scares, but I'm too afraid to research the frightening parts...

      I can kinda relate to Mari, she doesnt want to be in the body her father touched sexually, so she dreams herself as another girl.

    When Bunnilda, Penguindel or Foxanne says “seed” they refer to an actual seed, like a plant seed, but when Boaris says it I think he’s referring to his semen. The same word takes on a completely new meaning depending on the context and which character says it.
    The way the developer pulled that off is smooth as hell.

      Simple. When you go into a Doom game you already KNOW the doomguy's gonna rip and tear demons. Nothing to be surprised about, the world is hell due to the UAC (again)
      OTH you go into a crapsaccharine world everything looks pink and fluffy and as you play on you slowly start to realize the 'saccharine' part was nothing more than a smokescreen for something far darker and sinister. In this case a daddy sexually abusing his daughter.

    I just realised something.
    A lot of people have a theory that Mari’s mother is in a coma, and that this magical dream stuff is a power that was passed on through the family. We can presume that the voice speaking at 36:32 is Mari’s mother: “But, Mari… be careful. If you fall too far into your dreams, you won’t ever wake up.” We know that finding the key would have saved both Mari and her mother, and that’s exactly what her mother tried to do. But when you enter the more nightmarish version of the dream, the father starts to chase you. Perhaps when you get caught and you ‘die’, you end up “falling too far into your dreams.” I believe that the Mother tried to do exactly what Mari does in the game, but she fails, gets caught by the father, and ends up in a coma.

      Actually, that's exactly what it is. If you listen to the radio broadcast it pretty much spells out what to do to avoid the bad parts. Most people probably weren't quite listening to the radio at the beginning though. Understandable, but it definitely gives you details. It even tells you how Mary really looks in real life.

      Yeah, everyone tends to ignore the radio broadcast even though that's the ONLY voice you can trust 100%. If anyone listened to it in its entirety it would actually give them the BEST ending.

    I knew your playthrough of this would be enjoyable! :) (Especially since the game deals with symbolism and implications rather than literal storytelling in more than one way.)

    I don't think anyones mentioned this before:
    In the good ending, the ending line is "good morning Mary". Many people see this as the good ending being nothing but another dream, she didn't actually escape.
    But, it's mentioned before that Mary can make her dreams a reality. She made the gold leaf key real, allowing her to escape. So, it's possible that she made her dream self/life real. The line calls her *Mary*, not mari. So I think she made her entire dream into a reality.
    I don't know why I'm realizing this years later but it's interesting

    • @invisiblesun6595
      @invisiblesun6595 5 днів тому

      Good theory, but from what little I can find from the sequel the 'real' ending was when she went with Boris with two remaining petals. It was supposed to be a segway into the second game entitled "Blue Dreams". In fact, in one of Mary's books was an apology from someone she knew by the name of Lac. He was supposed to be the protagonist of the second game. but the company just vanished and the whole concept was scrapped.
