When a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life.
    Director: William Friedkin
    Writer: William Peter Blatty
Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Linda Blair

Okay, so i've seen a few comment suggesting this movie. It's a BIG classic of the horror genre and neither Dan or myself have seen it so this was an easy decision to watch next! The movie is 51 years old right now and let me tell you, it holds up so well!! The use of practical effects over CGI really helps. I thought the movie was a bit slow paced at times, but i think that's just a sign of the times, all in all i thought this movie was so so well done and would highly recommend to anyone that's a fan of the horror genre and yet to see this classic!

I’d suggest reading the book if you ever have the time. The movie is pretty much lifted from it word for word which is part of the reason that it moves so slowly in the beginning. The book spends a lot of time with the attempt to disprove she’s possessed and there’s a book on demons and the occult that’s found in the house that they leave out of the movie. They suspect that Regan has read the book and as a result, convinced herself that she’s possessed. So they sort of leave the portions in the movie where Damian doubts her possession, but they don’t fully tell you why.
Other than that there’s so much lore surrounding this movie it’s super fun to research it and watch the behind the scenes and documentaries. ie., there’s an actual serial killer who is an extra in the movie. He’s in the hospital scenes during her tests. And the actress who does the voice for demonic Regan or Pazuzu is named Mercedes McCambridge. Her son killed himself and his family and blamed her in his suicide note. As a result of all this people say the film and the people who worked on it are cursed. Adding to the creepy factor.
This film really changed the way films are made and marketed. It was a phenomenon, with people lining up for blocks to see it and some people getting sick in the theatre and walking out. Great fun to read about all of that. There’s a documentary on UA-cam that covers a lot of it.

Thank you so much for the really insightful comment!
Now knowing that the movie is following a really faithful adaption from the book (didn't even realise there was a book!) does make sense why it feels slow in the beginning. I think the part about the book on demons and the occult with the theory amongst the characters that Regan convinced herself she was possessed would have been great to include in the movie personally.
I've been somewhat ignorant to how much lore there is surrounding this movie, I really appreciate you taking some time to write this comment. I'm definitely going to be doing some deep dives into the lore surrounding this movie, gonna line up a few videos and that will be this evenings entertainment!

The "dead space" in the old movies is to allow you time to understand and empathize with the characters. That's why even though it's from the early 70s, it hits hard. It doesn't use jumpscares to frighten you, but instead lets the horror build over time. It's why it's one of the greats and is considered a real classic.

@@JackWillReact I'm re-posting this here, so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle:
Okay . . . Constructive criticism-time. (No, nobody likes unsolicited advice. However, embrace this as a series of suggestions from a viewer who believes you have potential to become a successful content-creator(s)/channel with a solid subscription-base. You need some fine-tuning, some streamlining.) And, please, do not react with a standard knee-jerk angry response, or double-down on the lackluster points these edicts will illuminate, simply out of defiance. Neither action is productive.
      Let's do this point-by-point:
1.) Your video is just too long. 30 (tops....) minutes is an adequate length to boil the sap into syrup, and relay all that need be.
2.) The ratio of film watched to your drawn-out reactions is what makes your videos too long. 10 seconds of film to 45 seconds of you discussing what
you just watched is, frankly, irritating. (And the zeal, or intensity, with which you strike the pause button is so palpably irksome that that sound may as well
      perform as a third partner.)
3.) Not every comment needs to be 'the money' comment. Your points are both on the obvious side while simultaneously drawn out; milking them.
Use precision. Be targeted. Stay focused on a trajectory. You should take a hint from successful reaction channels,
where the creators watch the film/television show ahead of time (They all do...),
then perform as if they are reacting to it for the VERY first time. This will allow you the opportunity to hone your script and tighten your acting skills.
You are not lying to your audience, not at all. You ARE reacting to the film/show for the FIRST time - while being recorded for (hopefully) an audience.
      In short, tighten-up your reactions.
4.) Let the scenes play-out through their conclusion before reacting. (*click-click-click* goes that pause button...) You disrupt the flow of the material
and lose the potential for more and better line-deliveries.
5.) Please, be patient with this: Lose the frustrated stand-up-comedian-wannabe' shtick. Go for more appealing and likeable and less Gee-aren't-I-a-clever-one?
Your humor is milked and your bits are overplayed. Tone it down.
6.) Dispense with those silly cuts/edits of screen-grabs and liftings from other source material to highlight (more like make it overwrought) a particular comment or reaction.
      Nobody likes them - Nobody.
I hope that you take these recommendations in the manner in which they were delivered - in the hopes that you get better over time. Again, you have potential.
I will periodically check on your channel and see how you are doing. I would like to become a champion of your progress. Take care, and be well.

The slow buildup is neither "dead space" nor is it inefficient. It's world building, lets you marinate in an alternative reality and in something closer to real time, which makes the subsequent, rapidly escalating mayhem all the more effective. (I will allow that the actor playing the detective, Lee J. Cobb, who was well-known at the time, is a bit of a ham--a little too phlegmatic, He stretched out his screen time for all it was worth and then some.) I do enjoy watching your reactions, though!

Don't necessarily expect people to believe this but it happened all the same.
Around the age of 10-12 (in my 60's now) I started to hear heavy breathing come into my bedroom and get closer and closer, I used to be frozen in fear when it happened.
I also started to have recurring nightmares about some house and I would go up a flight of stairs and when I got to the top there were dozens of stairs and doors and I would be lost and go into all these weird rooms getting more and more lost trying to find my way out.
One night the heavy breathing started up again when I was undressing for bed and my parents had friends around.
I ran down the stairs still holding my pyjamas into the back room to put them on (modesty) thinking it would go but it followed me down the stairs into the room so I just put my pyjama bottoms on and ran into the living room where my parents were.
They were only on the Ouija board!

At the beginning, Father Merrin is at the dig in Iraq. He finds a carving of the demon Pazuzu's face. This is the same demon that he exorcised from the boy in Africa years earlier, an ordeal that damaged his heart. Merrin realizes that this is a sign that Pazuzu is coming back, and they will do battle again, thus the face-off between Merrin and the Pazuzu statue.

That Father Merrin supposedly battled Pazuzu in Africa is _not_ based on author William Blatty's writings. He never named Pazuzu as the culprit, that was something that they introduced in "Exorcist II: The Heretic", often referred to as one of the worst sequels ever made, and which was not based on Blatty's writing. In fact, the behaviour of the possessed Regan doesn't correspond very well with Pazuzu, who for starters was described as being protective of mothers. It does however line up pretty well with Pazuzu's arch-nemesis Lamashtu, who enjoyed torturing mothers. In fact, Pazuzu was sometimes called upon to provide protection, especially against the sadistic Lamashtu. Remember "Evil against Evil"? Why even mention that if it is completely irrelevant to the story? I feel that Blatty did his research when writing the book, so it seems very unlikely to me that he'd pick the "wrong" spirit.

Dead space? No. World building. Establishing the fact that this movie takes place in the real world of science, medicine, law enforcement, and people who don't yell DEMON!!! if someone sneezes weirdly. This was a world where no one had seen The Exorcist.
Friedkin made a mature movie for smart people about the mysteries of faith and good and evil. There was no music to close people into knowing when to be scared. Most of it took place in daylight. There were no cheesy jump scares. Friedkin had just won Best Director the year before for The French Connection, a very gritty cop movie set in New York. He had started out as a documentarian and he kept that sensibility in his mainstream movies. The acting was naturalistic and understated and the possession scenes were always based on the two exorcisms performed in the 20th century Western world, one in Europe and one in the U.S. If it didn't happen during those two rituals, he didn't show it. In other words, he didn't make up scenes for their shock or fright value. And he didn't insult the audience by explaining what he was doing or why the audience was seeing something. A death occurs. The police investigate deaths. Real doctors performed the tests that Regan was subjected to. The technology was as up to date as possible In 1973. And as stated by the director and writer, they had no interest in making a horror movie. That it is embraced as a horror movie is due solely to the documented subject matter and occurences. If it happened, he showed it. If it didn't happen, he would not show it.
But he did have a deep interest in showing the world in which the Exorcist was set.

What YT reactors don't remember to mention is that The Exorcist was the biggest box office success ever in 73/74. It earned $500 million worldwide in a year domestic/international. And the people who went to see it were mainstream audiences, not horror fans.
These were people who hired babysitters, went out to dinner, then went to an actual theater, bought their tickets there, and waited in line for an hour or more. And they did so in the company of that most frightening thing of all: Other People. Strangers. People You May Not Like.
They didn't buy their tickets online or watch it on a streaming service on a HD TV at home. No, these people went out into the world without being sure they wouldn't get to the theater and find it sold out that night. And they couldn't buy tickets for another night.
And this was NOT the crowd that went to see Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Night Of The Living Dead or The Evil dead or slasher movies or grindhouse movies. This $500 million was paid by people who saw The Sting and Godfather and My Fair Lady and Cabaret and The Way We Were, etc.
And this film was made by someone with absolutely no interest in making a horror movie. And it could not be made today. If you've seen another movie where a 12 year old girl masturbates with a cross then made her mom lick her blood, you're seeing porn.

This is a true story. My mom and my 2 elder sisters used to bring my brother and I to watch The Exorcist when I was only 5 years old in first year of kindergarten. Most of the time I felt a bit bored and bothered my mom for snacks/drink or just to gain her attention. Only 3 scenes made me stop and watch: the opening desert archaeology scene with the red blood movie title; the crucifix masturbation scene; the final exorcism scene. My sisters were annoyed and complained to mom that I don’t know how to watch a movie in a cinema. Almost 2 decades later, I gained respect for this vintage classic as a young adult who is also a movie buff. So when it was playing on tv for its 25th anniversary close to midnight, I recorded it on vhs tape but since there were commercial ads the original duration is inflated. I let the tape continue recording the show In Living Color after the Exorcist ended until the tape ran out. One fine day, my parents were out sleeping over at my sister’s house leaving me all alone at home at night. I am not insane enough to watch The Exorcist in such situation but I needed to reel the tape fast forward in order to access and watch In Living Color. I remember of fast forwarding only about 2 hours and 7 minutes then press play on the remote control. Imagine my horror and shock when the scene that exploded on tv at cranked up volume was that of Regan roaring and sticking her tongue at the 2 priests. That completely freaked me out; I turned off the tv and turned on all the lights that night while sleeping. The book ties together a lot of loose ends from the film. It’s truly a perfect story - a brilliant film, too! But the novel is incredibly written, and, apart from the disturbingly graphic scenes, is actually quite beautiful. I appreciate the ‘ugly’ and the shocking details because it makes us care even more about the characters. I’m glad y’all reviewed it! 😄

Some trivia for you. The scenes of Regan in the hospital getting the MRI and PET scan was real. The director knew Linda Blair was too young to know how to act like she is having them, so he asked her mother if he could really have it done to get honest reactions. She said sure! (She said yes to everything that Linda went through. So, rust colored liquid that they put on her neck is Iodine. It’s used in all procedures for the area to be germ free. The needle in her neck was real. The blood squirting out was real. The actor that played the Doctor that put the needle in her neck turned out to be a serial killer in real life. I say serial killer… he only killed and disposed of three bodies. All young girls. Oops on the casting director!
When Regan was doing the power crunches, she was laying on a mechanical spring board it slipped and jammed her in the back. She still has problems with her back today. When the mom comes in and gets a face full of Regan’s menstrual cycle and then pimp slapped across the room, she permanently hurt her back also.
Regan’s bedroom was a set built in a meat locker. There had to be real fog coming out of her mouth. So the costume designer put blanket material under everyone’s costume. When the director called cut in between shots, the cast had their coats in there, including the production team. They would put them
On… except Linda. Her costume was that flimsy night dress and there was no way to insulate it.
The voice of the demon was an actress from the 1930’s, 40’s and so on. Her name was Mercedes McCambridge. She had previously been nominated for an Oscar years before this. If you want more trivia, let me know.

It's not supernatural, as the title suggests. It's about three criminals that undertake a difficult mission which offers a modicum of redemption. I hope you'll give it a shot, someday.

The novel by William Peter Blatty was based on an actual exorcism of a 14 year old boy from Maryland which took place in St. Louis, Missouri in 1948. It took several weeks, the last few of which took place in the old Alexian Brothers hospital in south St. Louis, which as since been torn down. According to the priests journals, the events were similar to those in the movie but a bit toned down, no spinning heads or floating beds.
Also, the part of Father Dyer, the younger priest who gave last rites at the end, was played by Fr. William J. O'Malley, a Jesuit priest who was brought onto the film originally as a consultant, but then given a small part.
Father O'Malley, until his recent passing, taught at Fordham Prep School in the Bronx, NY.

The 2018 movie Hereditary makes a few sly nods to the Exorcist: Both feature likely-possessed girls of similar age who craft sus-looking sculptures and drawings, albeit Charley is far more obsessive and prolific than Regan in this regard. (Also, Regan doesn't incorporate dead bird parts into her figurines!) The mothers in both movies, Chris MacNeil and Annie Graham, make expeditions into the attic via pull-down trap doors, and a suddenly flaring candle signals the unseen presence of the demon, at a certain point, in both pictures . . .

so, before the priest can expel the demon they need to know it's name. there is a whole rite called the Roman Rite that they recite and part of it is calling it by it's name and separating it from the possessed. also fun fact, they consulted a priest exorcist for this movie and this is considered by the Church the most accurate depiction of how it would go, right down to the colors of vestments, the way the stole was put on, etc.

Not sure if you are familiar but there’s a story in the Bible where Jesus exorcises a demoniac and casts the demons into a herd of pigs who then run over a cliff. I love the ending because Damien serves as both pig, a lowly beast into whom a demon is cast, and Christ figure, sacrificing himself to allow life for another. If you look on the wall outside the window he jumped from you can see the word “pig” graffiti-d on it. The demon also calls Regan a “sow,” perhaps a reference of this verse.

The unabridged audiobook of the 1971 novel "The Exorcist" as read by the author William Peter Blatty is available on UA-cam. This is the first installment of his Faith Trilogy. The second is his novel and 1980 film "The Ninth Configuration" with the film also available on UA-cam. One element is a story arc of the astronaut from "The Exorcist" party that Regan had told, "You are going to die up there". In the novel Fr. Dyer had even done a harder number on him at the party prior to that. The final installment is Blatty's book "Legion" which became the film "Exorcist III" in 1990. React to the theatrical version but view the restored original director's version afterwards as the studio ordered a major rewrite and reshoot. Both are available on UA-cam.

    1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱😱
    2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always🤣
    3. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release.
    4. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for dramatic effect.
    5. Father Merin and the demon/Pazuzu had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis.
    6. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually broke her coccyx when the demon makes her hard fall. That wince of pain is the real deal.
    7. The first priest Karras admits his lack of faith to/Tom, was a real priest.
    8. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter.
    9. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her.
    10. Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith.
    11. RIP Willian Freidkin😇

ALL this to say, when going-in blind on an older, well-respected work...MAYBE take the era of its production into account. Some films have more real world effects on people and pop culture than just what happens during the runtime. I also think you cheated yourselves by skewing your reaction away from honesty toward something performative. That's perfect for slasher movies and comedies but... not for everything.

This seems to be the new 4k-release: The Theatrical version from 1973 has the restored audio track from the Extended Cut 2001? I'm confused now

The movie was about faith and beliefs.

5 minutes in and I already have had enough of the jokes and predictions and invaluable commentary.

The scenes where the room was freezing cold were actually filmed on a set built in a refrigerated trailer!

Very good reaction you two. BTW, if you want to watch more of this franchise, PLEASE only react to "The Exorcist 3", and "Exorcist: The Beginning", in that way, you can view them as a trilogy.

Chris and Regan were living in a rental house. They actually live in Los Angeles.

Not bad for a 50 year old mlvie, huh? Still has some of the best horror scenes put to film. I can't believe you made the joke about Karras punching Capt Howdy only for him to do just that later lol. Others have already said the connection Pazuzu (the statue and relic at the beginning) has to the possession so I wont go into that again.
I'd love for you guys to check out Cube. Its one of my favorite sci-fi/psychological horror thrillers. Also, I second the recommendation for Sinister as it has some very well done horror scenes and twists some classic tropes.
See ya in the next vid!

The father’s mother maiden name was Mary, and since the devil hates the Virgin Mary, the demon could say her maiden name!

Excellent video. Was so glad to see you posted today. Consider watching the other Exorcist videos. They're all varying quality, some much worse than others. II is considered awful, but it's a weird, wild ride. III is much better and you see Father Karras return briefly.

Thanks mate, appreciate it! 😊 I'd be very much down to check out the other Exorcist movies, they made one really recently as well didn't they? And no way! Father Karras returns!? I need to see this now!!

I saw this as a 10 year old in 74 (we always got the movie a year later in our small town) in a theatre by myself, (well, it was full) and then I had to walk home 3 miles through the woods 🤣needless to say I was high-stepping. Different times, hell I smoked cigs in the lobby.
