Re: Watching the 1st series before the Fourth - I'm really not sure what context they're talking about, it must be quite obscure, so you're probably safe to just watch the 4th. As for it not being a good, it really isn't, but that just makes everything that came after so much more impressive.
I'd vote going straight on to Blackadder Goes Forth which continues in the same vein of humour of the previous two series. The first series is in a different style and is decent, but I rewatch 2, 3 & 4 far more often than the first. Not sure what context is being talked about in relation to the first series, but whatever it is, I wouldn't say it was necessary. And look forward to more classic Hugh Laurie in the fourth.
Do watch the 1st Series either before or after series 4 it doesn't matter which order. However do watch Blackadders Christmas Carol next as that was broadcast between series 3 and 4
The 1st Series is "different." It's by Richard Curtis & Rowan Atkinson, they brought Ben Elton in for the later series and played it for more "laughs." Also, Series 1 is shot on location, as opposed to purely in the studio with sets. That said, it's wonderfully funny in places. Percy and Baldrick are hilarious. And, it's worth watching just for the "Queen of Spain's Beard," featuring a wonderful stint my Miriam Margolyes, as the Spanish Infanta. Talk about totally milking it. The same goes for Rik Mayall as the mad prisoner in the final episode. Oh, and Hugh Laurie _does_ appear in Series IV, as a character called..........George! 😉😉
Yes to be complete you watch it all. You get to see a witch trial. A battle with King Richard goes very wrong. Back Adder has to get money from a dying man before the Church does. The prison scene is a very funny. It has Brian Blessed. What's not to love about that? The final title song is one of my favorite TV show songs.
The ‘Queen of Spain’s Beard’ is a must watch from the first series. Jim Broadbent & Miriam Margolyes are hilarious together. However, straight onto the fourth series would work best now.
Go straight to the fourth series by far the best bring tissues your gonna need them empathy always in top comedy, then dip your toe into the first series.
I say get the first series out of the way because blacksdder goes forth will be the best send off you could have , you’ll in for such a treat I was 10 when it aired and the ending is some of the most moving tv you’ll see!
All four series are very good. Probably should watch them in order if only for chronological order and context. Season 1. = Wars of the Roses Season 2. = Elizabethan Season 3. = George III & Prince Regent Season 4. = WWI trenches Everything is subjective, eg I found the first season the best - “Spanish Infanta” is hilarious !
There are very much two camps regarding the first series, people that think it's great and will say you should definitely watch it, and those that will tell you to not bother. I'm in the former set, and I'll back it up with the fact that the North American reactors that I've seen watch it (Taffe for example), all loved it, and couldn't see why they were warned off it. Now, as objective as I can be about it, and without spoilers: The pros: It had a huge budget for a sitcom of the time, with a large ensemble cast, including some legendary faces (I won't spoil it) dozens of extras, horses, and expensive location filming. It's quite an impressive production (for an 80s sitcom). And the stories for each episode are mostly very fun. The cons: The main characters aren't very well developed yet and it's hard to pin down what they were going for. It's not very broad humour for the most part and some of the jokes will work better on historians that the general public. Blackadder himself is not a very likeable character and that's a problem in a character-driven sitcom for some people. I do urge you to at least watch one episode and make up your own mind. They can more or less be watched in any order except for the first and last. Episode 4; "The Queen of Spain's Beard" is probably the funniest episode with the best guest star.
Hi Megan👋 Edmund Blackadder from series one is a completely different character to the other series. He is unmasculine and devious( Rowan Atkinson described him as a talking Mr Bean) he is aided by Baldrick, who is the brains of the trio alongside the hopelessly effete Percy. Edmund Blackadder always attempts to circumvent lifes vicissitudes rather than take them on head on is loathed by his own father. Its definitely worth a watch maybe after you have viewed 'Go forth'
Watch the first. It's different, but it's not rubbish. There's good material in all of the episodes, and even if some of it is weaker than 2/3/4, that doesn't make it bad. It's still good, just not as good. But it would be a shame for you to miss the best parts of it.
Blackadder S1, or more correctly titled "The Blackadder" is definitely rather patchy, so I suggest you start with the 4th episode "The Queen of Spain's Beard", which is by far the funniest: and guest stars Miriam Margolyes. who you will remember from her outrageous interviews on the Graham Norton Show.. Then if you want you can watch the rest or not.
I don't see any particular connection between the first series and the fourth, so it it would make more sense to go on to the fourth. There is a Christmas special which sirs between 3 and 4, a take on A Christmas Carol. That said you should watch series one afterwards. It is different in the characteristics of the principle characters, but it is very very funny, and made on a much bigger budget that later series. People who fell in love with the later series tend not to like that it's different.
If youve already seen 2 & 3 there is no harm in going back to 1. Some people who watched 1 gave up and never went beyond that so dont appreciate what Black Adder became.m I think you'll appreciate 1 now
I like the first series personally. If you don't want to watch it, I'd suggest watching the 1st episode of season one, so you know how Blackadder came into being
Id personally go in chronological/hsitorical order still... ie Christmas Carol next, since it takes place historically after the third, then Goes Fourth, then... BlackAdder goes Back and Forth... which was a special mini movie done for the turn of the millennium back in '00, cant see people mentioning that one in the comments. It ties up the franchise nicely. Then id go back to the first series, not sure why people give the first series so much negativity, given it was the first BA I ever saw while its different its not bad, and its only different since the show was finding its feet.
I don't know how watching the first series would provide more context for the fourth, as they're set in completely different time periods. Everyone has different opinions, and while there may be a general consensus that the later series are better, there's still plenty to enjoy about the first. You should watch both, but in either order is fine.
I would say watch the first series….you will always wonder why we say not to otherwise haha 🤗 glad you got to Blackadder…it will be great fun to see you enjoy it 👍✨
It's true that series 1 is completely different and not as good. But I still think it's funny and worth a watch. There is not need to watch it before series 4. They aren't connected so you can watch any of it in any order with the one exception perhaps being Back and Forth which you should watch last. But whether you film a reaction or not, series 1 is still worth a watch. Just remember that it is different
Love this episode. I always felt that the last episodes of each of the four series were a step up from the rest - even the first series. As for what to watch next, Megan, it's your call. I don't remember any links between series 1 and 4. Series 4 does recycle some jokes and characters from series 2, which is why I don't like it quite as much as 2 and 3. You've now seen enough to know what it became, so I don't think watching series 1 will harm your opinion of it. There are a few extras to look out for, too. Blackadder's Christmas Carol - just hilarious The Cavalier Years - a bonus episode made for Comic Relief Back and Forth - bumper, time travelling episode, made to celebrate the millennium
You won't need any context watching ...Goes Forth. Pretty much follows on the same format as the 2nd & 3rd series, but is even better IMO. The 1st series is a bit marmite. I'd go back and watch it after watching Goes Forth and the Christmas Carol special. Personally, I think it has some great moments. I especially like the "Witchsmeller Pursuivant" episode. I saw it 1st when aired and was looking forward to the 2nd series, so it struck a chord with me. A lot more physical & face pulling humour from Rowan Atkinson, Baldrick is smarter & there's not so much witty humour. Worth watching just for Brian Blessed as the King, who is always good value for money.
The first series is okay in my opinion, it has its moments. A lot of Brits hate it but I don’t think the third series featured in this video is much funnier.
Just MY opinion but I'd skip Bladder the First - I originally came in about halfway through Series 1 when it first started airing on TV and I just didn't like it. Series 2 came on and I thought I'd give it a go and glad I did - Series 2-4 (And specials) are the best, Season 1 is just a curiosity and you would get an idea of how far the characters developed BUT there's almost nothing to like for me. We're all different though, maybe you'll love it (But I doubt it LOL) ;)
I agree .I didnt like the first series as much all the rest were better though there were funny parts in the 1st series. I think is partly because blackadder in the other 3 series was much more sarcastic and cynical if they are the right words compared to the first series edmund blackadder character.
Yeah forget the first one and carry on with the fourth. The first can wait coz it’s crap 😅 this time period is also the time of Jane Austen…who was forced to put in her last book a tribute to the Prince Regent (Hugh Laurie) , who was a fan of Austen’s but Jane disliked the Prince immensely.
for me the only thing that the first season would give you is how the characters change over the years. Blackadder is a really weak and feeble character (in my opinion) in the first and Baldrick is a lot more forceful...they gradually go the other way through the series
@@MeganRuth You don't qualify the original, especially when talking to an English audience. "London, Canada" when talking of other Londons around the world is perfectly apt.
@@terrortorn I realise this, but for me I still wish to clarify as that's how I was brought up and that's what I feel comfortable doing. Thank you for understanding :)
Sadly true. It is very uneven; some bits work, but many others don't. It's a bit fun to see Rowan Atkinson when he was still learning how to act and deliver jokes, though!
Re: Watching the 1st series before the Fourth - I'm really not sure what context they're talking about, it must be quite obscure, so you're probably safe to just watch the 4th. As for it not being a good, it really isn't, but that just makes everything that came after so much more impressive.
The 1st series was great, I loved it.
The 1st episode of 1st series is good and fills all you need to know don't you know !
Blackadder Goes Forth, please, Darling!!!! 🤣 (In joke - and lots of Hugh Laurie)
I'd vote going straight on to Blackadder Goes Forth which continues in the same vein of humour of the previous two series. You'd probably enjoy Laurie and Fry in the series, ''Jeeves and Wooster.''
Do watch the 1st Series either before or after series 4 it doesn't matter which order. However do watch Blackadders Christmas Carol next as that was broadcast between series 3 and 4
Only watch the first series to totally appreciate how good the fourth is. (I'd go to fourth if I was you!)

Yes yes yes to all of that! And a big budget with location shooting, castles and actual horses!
I don't know why people hate the first series, I absolutely loved it.

1st season is really good, just different style
Def watch the 1st series, it's very underrated!
Agreed, I don't get the hate for it. I absolutely love it.
Go straight on to the masterpiece that is Blackadder Goes Forth.
The first series is as good as the education of the viewer. If you know history and Shakespeare, you will get the jokes.

Fry and Laurie were a double act had their own sketch show like the two ronnies
A Bit of Fry and Laurie is another UK series to check out
I think the Christmas Special lands between Series 3 and 4. I think. So probably that.
Go to the fourth series and forget about the first series. Love your reactions.

'I can totally tell that's stage-fighting'
...no they actually just beat the shit out of Hugh Laurie in front of a live audience. /s
😂 I didn't mean it like that! I meant they used stage fighting as apposed to the combat they typically use in cinema which is a different technique.

whist quite funny in its own right, it’s not the same as the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. IIRC it’s not necessary to watch it for any of the subsequent series.
watch the Specials >
Just watch the 4th and don't waste your life.
