As you enjoyed it yu should watch the rest just for your own enjoyment even if you don't record a reaction. There's a lot to enjoy in there on it's own merits. Baldrick's "Oh dear, Richard the Third" is a brilliant line reading which has stayed in my head for 40 years!
I'm convinced that most people who say they hate the first series have likely never seen it. It's not as well received as the later ones, but that doesn't make it bad. I've always preferred it, in fact.
Agreed, or just haven’t seen it for decades, it wasn’t repeated a lot like the others. I started to rewatch months ago and was surprised how much I laughed out loud, it’s not the weakest series at all.
I've sat through it 4-5 times as I have them all on DVD. I find it quite painful to get through, there are funny moments for sure but most of it resembles the kind of jokes you find on CBeebies.
Also, a lot of younger fans have no idea who Peter Cook was, or how much of a coup it was to get him to play Richard III. Same with Brian Blessed, just seen as a shouty man by the younger set.
As per the numerous Blackadder documentaries, the creators and stars don't really have the fondest memories of it. Though I don't think even they would advise people to skip it!
Richard the 3rd is played by British comedy legend Peter Cook, former partner of Dudley Moore, and one of the most respected and beloved comedians of his generation. Check out Derek & Clive, if you dare.
So many great British actors appeared in the first series. Some just one-off characters or (like Brian Blessed), in all 6 episodes I.e. Elspet Gray as the Queen.... Also Peter Cook, Miriam Margolyes, Jim Broadbent, Rik Mayall and Patrick Allen to name but a few... Fantastic cast! 😊
The episode where he leads a band of mercenaries 👌🏻. And rik mayall as mad Gerald. There’s so much good stuff in this series, it’s probably my favourite. I think he’s funnier as the slimy, cowardly version in this. And it gets better with every episode.
The first series of BlackAdder is an exercise in alternative history, such as novels where The Nazis win WWII or The South win The American Civil War. In this case Richard III winning The Battle of Bosworth Field. In reality Richard lost and was the last English king to die on the battlefield and Prince Richard (Richard IV) actually died aged 9 or 10, supposedly murdered on Richard's orders.
Aw, I think you should continue with 1 for sure. It is it's own thing, but it does get better and the rest of the episodes all have strong moments that it would be a shame to miss.
You probably noticed Peter Cook as the King! he was a fantastic comedian, If you haven't heard Derek & Clive, I suggest you do, but a review would probably get de-monitised 🤣
Richard the third was found under the car park of Leicester city council building , he is now buried at Leicester Cathedral , quite a way from Bosworth fields
As has been said by others The Queen of Spain's Beard is a must watch. Has some of the funniest moments in any Blackadder. There are little gems sprinkled throughout the series like when Edmund is trying to proove Harry is illegitimate but , yeah, the pacing is a bit off and there is a lot of scene chewing going on for a comedy series.
It’s ‘The Queen Of Spain’s Beard’. Which, to be fair, doesn’t make sense as she’s not a queen. But it alludes to the phrase “singeing the King of Spain’s beard” so it all sort of ties up in a strange sort of way.
@@GrilloTheFlightless It has been a while. I think the title reference comes, however, from the moment when Edmund is awaiting the infanta and the translator comes up behind him, says "Hello" and "I am the spanish infanta" and Edmund looks at him and cracks back something like "No one told me you had a beard."
But like most comedies it was new & people didn't understand it.a new generation who didn't even no who Rowan Atkinson was.or Peter cook,Stephen fry,rik mayall etc were.I was 10/11 when the young ones appeared.just laughed because it was anarchic more than jokes.saw a Canadian woman react to 1st episode of rising damp😫she was speechless at the rascism, bigotry, sexism which was greatly written & portrayed the times(still does 50 years later😫)by 2nd episode she laughed all the way through.each to their own
The last 3 episodes of the series especially are as good as any in the others imo. That duo of Jim Broadbent and Miriam Margolyes is absolute class, and the Spanish Infanta is one of her best comedic performances.
Whether people like it or not depends mostly on their level of education. If you know history and Shakespeare, it is hilarious. If you don't, it's not. It's a great way to find out which are your most informed friends.
When you get to the episode with Miriam Margolyes (Ep4 The Queen Of Spain's Beard) one of the greatest gags of all time is buried in the end credits and never referred to. You will recognise Jim Broadbent (from Harry Potter among many others) as the Spanish Infanta's interpreter, but look for the character's name. You will not regret it.
I enjoyed the 1st series of Black Adder, it was good that the roles reversed for Baldrick and Blackadder in later series but it was still a good 1st series. The Spanish Infanta was my favourite episode....
Not watching the whole series? You're missing out. Frank Finlay as the Witchsmeller Pursuivant, Miriam Margolyes as the Spanish Infanta and Edmund's fate? HIGHLY underrated.
Rowan Atkinson actually wrote this, then made way for Ben Elton for the following seasons........ They are quite good. Particularly the one where they're nearly burnt at the stake
Season 1 isn't bad, it is just that Season 2 was so good it became the base for everything going forward. The best part of the episode was Baldrick's delivery of the line "Oh dear, Richard the Third".
The first series does markedly improve as it goes on. The Spanish Infanta episode and the Archbishop episode are great! I'd like to see you do the rest of it.
Rowan Atkinson tends to write rough idiot characters for himself by choice. As he did so in this series. After this series he gave up writing Blackadder in favour of Ben Elton who changed the dynamic to have Blackadder be dashing rather than idiotic and the only sensible person surrounded by morons.
You should have started with the first series, saw it all the way through before moving onto the second. It’s just daft to not do them in sequence. You also might have had a different opinion but seeing as how there were so many commentators insisting it was bad , that might not have been the case…but as someone who sat glued to this at around 7/8/9 when it was originally shown. This was very much beloved at the time by everyone I knew.
The first series was alot darker and Baldrick actually was fairly intelligent, very different from the rest of the series but not in a bad way, still bloody hilarious 😂
i think if you liked this first episode and saw potential in it i say watch it, i personally think its a good series, it has it flaws but it was trying something new
I recall how much I loved this as a 14 year old when it first came out. It's not true that its wasn't a success, it was popular and an award winner. However it was also very expensive, with a huge cast and lots of location filming. Obviously the Blackadder and Baldrick characters are very different, this is Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder, the other one is Ben Elton's version performed by Atkinson. I just don't understand the hate piled on this series, the other episodes feature Mitriam Margolyes as the sex mad Spannish Enfanta, a amazing witch trial featuring Frank Finley and in another Blackadder ends up Archbishop of Canterbury, and throughout you get Brian Blessed in one of his best roles.
If you enjoyed this one, then you should continue to watch the rest of the series. It's a different slant on what would become Blackadder, but still has it's funny parts.
I think I said a similar thing when you guys posted the first episode of season 2. And I'll say it again here. There's nothing wrong, per se, about the first season. It's just the least good of a show that just got better and better with each and every season. Season 1: okay Season 2: very funny Season 3: hilarious Season 4: genre defining
I'd rather see you watch the full series of this instead of the utter shite that was blackadder back and forth. Blackadders Christmas Carol on the other hand is brilliant
In each series of Blackadder, he moves down in social class and gets smarter. In the first series, he's royalty and kind of stupid. He's smartest in the fourth series, but just a commoner.
Series 1 was a bit of a mixed bag. It does have some great gags but it also is a bit weak in parts. Episode 1 also has the late, great Peter Cook doing his best Laurence Olivier impression as Richard III
I loved the first series, it was the best, way ahead of Game of Thrones, it cost too much, made on location in Alnwick Castle (Hogwarts) and they had to cut the budget for the later series.
Series 1 is fantastic in It's own right but there are 2 reasons why the later series were so different. 1. Although the BBC liked the 1st series of was just too expensive, outdoor locations, she we with dozens of background characters etc. The other series were all studio based with a handful of fabulous cast. 2. Ben Elton was brought in to write with Richard Curtis, Although I think Ben has gone off.the boil since the late 90's. @@michaelcattrell2407 i agree on 1-6 but was not to keen on 10-13 they had got too old . Their time had passed in my opinion. Still love it all but just was not as funny. Still love the insanity of it all
See baldrick should have had a cunning plan , when black adder lopped richards head off. Season two is when black adder becomes black adder. The guy in the bed is Henry the 8ths dad Henry the 7th the guy who actually won boworth. It’s an alternate reality
As a massive Blackadder fan, I can't remember exactly when I got switched on to them, but I did watch 'Forth' when it was originally broadcast in about '89, and it was watched by everyone in the student accommodation I was living in at the time, staff included. I found the first series hard going, and it's not my favourite, and apart from the obvious (filmed on location, vs filmed on sets), I think from the cast, crew, and writers, made massive changes from the second series onwards, and the characters are far more defined. That said, without the first series, we would never have had the rest.
Thanks for doing this! Did you notice the much higher budget? Location shooting! Epic score! Brian Blessed in every episode! Stunts! Later episodes don't require Shakespeare knowledge to get all the jokes. I wouldn't expect you to do the all six given the luke warm reaction, but the witch hunt episode and the finale are worth seeing at some point as both are better than this. If you have time. If you're not doing anything better.
I think many who saw the first series when it was first shown loved it as something completely new and very entertaining. And, if you were a history fan or a Shakespeare fan it was all the more enjoyable because of the many related references. But the subsequent series were even better. The lower budgets meant that the writers had to become more creative and this pushed the show to new levels of quality. Those who saw the first series after any of the later versions might well have been a little disappointed as a result. Which is why the first series is sometimes less well remembered. But it was ahead of its time and is still well crafted and well worth seeing all six episodes. I'd leave the specials until later on, personally. Especially the Christmas one, which is a real treat to watch during the festive season.
Brian blessed is one of our finest actor's ever. Also Peter Cook played king Richard was as funny as Rowan. Try listening to him and Dudley Moore in adnauseum.
Season 1 is definitely below par but judging it on only one episode is rather unfair. I very strongly recommend that you also watch Episode 4 "The Queen of Spain's Beard", which is by far the funniest. It also stars Miriam Margolyes, who you might know from her outrageous Graham Norton interviews! Well worth a look.
I like Series 1, cool time period it's just the production was a bit rough and ready compared to the later Series. I think Black Adder being thick makes it more believable, we all have a tricky in our families 😂😂😂
I wouldn't go near the specials, they were capitalising on a good reputation but clung to past tropes. You'd be better off following through on the first series.
This was my favourite series of Black Adder. The episode with the Spanish Infanta still makes me hoot with laughter just thinking about it.
Just call me Jeremy of Estonia :)
You have the LEGEND that is Peter Cook as King in this series... one of the true greats of UK comedy
Whole season is a must.....100%
Watch it all! - It is the original Blackadder! - it’s excellent
As you enjoyed it yu should watch the rest just for your own enjoyment even if you don't record a reaction. There's a lot to enjoy in there on it's own merits. Baldrick's "Oh dear, Richard the Third" is a brilliant line reading which has stayed in my head for 40 years!
My favorite line. I love the understatement!
"Oh dear. Richard the Third..."
First series was fantastic.
S2 is a significant improvement on s1, which is true of many sitcoms.
@@DavidZ4-gg3dmThis obsession with strength. Just let it be and appreciate the creation, it must begin somewhere. Anyway, I whole heartedly disagree.
