8:30 - Interestingly because of all the now "known issues" there are much greater odds that the same issues won't be there at the launch of Pimax's 12K QLED. Though because of Pimax's poor launch timing... problems experienced by Crystal and Portal are somewhat highly likely to be shared since there should have been a greater launch timing difference to help alieviate issues like what is discussed in the video. Wondefully because of Pimax's bad launch "window" of sometime in 2024, Pimax now has to get people who were already prepared to drop a couple thousand on a new headset to not reconsider and just give Apple Vision Pro, BigScreen, Index 2(?), Somnium VR, XTAL, or VARJO a shot.... I mean you OBVIOUSLY have a few thousand to even consider Pimax 12K QLED in the first place so... Pimax's ("New" Renowned Quality) or you know someone else.
Maybe just maybe these things might help to reform Pimax into a more competent company that can actually admit when they've goofed up...

The problem with this review is that you like go out and you try to find all the problems they have. For example you guys are showing all this distortion but I can't find it. Why should I go out looking for problems the average person may not even notice it unless you guys focus on it. That's probably the problem with a lot of UA-cam reviewers. Looking up problems for some people to find them and say yeah there it is makes no sense. Maybe you guys see it really fast but I can't find half the crap that you are talking about. Maybe I'm just stupid. I just want to enjoy any VR headset without searching out problems. All of VR headsets have some problems I would probably never look at any VR headset if we searched all the problems.

It's over 1800€ in Europe. I wouldn't call that "cheap". Not with the shortcoming this thing has, like the extremely heavy weight (1100g? wtf where they thinking?) or the mandatory battery.

2000 euros in Europe because they don't include VAT in the price they advertise on their website and you need to add 100 euros for the DMAS speakers as the sound is terrible without it. Finally you have to add 100 euros for shipping. It's ridiculous for such a headset with so many drawbacks.

One of the most informative reviews re: Pimax Crystal. I have been dying - like you Matteo - to upgrade my Index since it's really dated and painful to use in DCS after a while, especially in air-air encounters.
At the time when I got it at launch, it was truly the ultimate VR (still holding up if you ignore resolution) at a time when both the Rift and Vive had annoying drawbacks (Rift's subpar tracking but superb controllers compared to the Vive's superior base station tracking but stupid controllers).
Let's hope the Deckard would be like the Index the ultimate VR although I am kinda starting to doubt it (pancake/aspheric optics, QLED/OLED display, min 2560x2560 resolution, foveated rendering, high FOV, IPD adjustment) for a reasonable price.. nah! unlikely 😕

Just trying to find the right form fit and quality combo to make my experience memorable. So far Pico 4 still wins. Quest 2 was just to low res. Quest Pro, horribly uncomfortable and stll low res, but those Pro lenses were the best yet. Overall best to date, again is the Pico 4. Sure wish I could try that Beyond. Tempted to pre order....

  • @SargonDragon
    @SargonDragon Рік тому +8

The fundamental problem with Pimax as a company is they have _no minimum standard of quality_ on what they'll ship to customers. Their VR headsets are consistently more powerful than anything else on the market. But they'll ship stuff which is half baked. And this isn't just teething issues for a new product release. The mentality is pervasive throughout everything they do. So you get this combination of superlative capabilities and jank.
It's frustrating because I think they really could eliminate the jank part, often without all that much additional effort. But for whatever reason they just don't. It's like they don't recognize this stuff as real problems.
This could be because Pimax is out of touch with people who are _not_ their customers. Pimax employees are very passionate, and I believe they really do care. But I think the only customers they really talk to are hardcore enthusiasts who are willing and able to workaround the problems in their products. Since these enthusiasts have already resolved these issues for themselves, they don't complain about them much. Meanwhile, many other would be customers are being repelled by the same issues and just return Pimax or never buy it in the first place.
I'd really like to see Pimax change its ways. There's so much they get right but they keep on foiling it with just a couple of bad habits that undermine themselves. It's frustrating!

The Bigscreen Beyond is not for me, I have 75mm IPD and it only goes to 72mm with its set sizes. I'm disappointed with many headsets, because they don't cater for large IPD's. When I got into VR in 2016, I had a Vive and then a Vive Pro, both of those went to 74mm, then manufactures started making smaller headsets. Currently my 8KX works for me, with the 70mm IPD + sortware adjustment to get to 75mm. I'm impressed with the PSVR2, it has IPD adjustment from 57mm to 75mm, eye tracking and foveated rendering, if PC VR had this, you would be raving about it at the low price of $800AUD.

While the packaging can be blamed for the broken strap it really just means that was a weak point from the start and with the significant weight it's bound to end up broken.

Hello Raven. The standalone functionality only added battery weight. A built in chip was already required for the inside out tracking anyways. We also advertised these features as NOT being available in the headset at launch when we first announced it more than a year ago. At every point in time along the way we have clearly communicated with our customer base that those features would not be available when the headset first started shipping. We are however looking to release the firmware enabling standalone in the next month or so.

The crystal has an identity crisis, it has no idea what it wants to be.
Typical pimax over promises. They should have
      A. Stuck with pcvr, drop the
      B. Ran it without a battery
      C. Got all features working for launch and shipping.
      D. Resigned it..there is no need for the size. The aero is half the size with nearly the same tech in it

    • @WhatsupAbroad
      @WhatsupAbroad Рік тому +3

@brettgrieves The aero lacks many of the features we have implemented. And a full body redesign for each headset would have required us to run extra factories and significantly increased the end user cost. The standalone functionality is also demanded by all of our B2B partners, sales of which total nearly 25% of our total sales. Many use cases require the wireless functionality and inside out tracking. We also have multiple other models being developed on top of the Crystal mold. The Crystal is the base unit upon which several other headsets are being designed. Some of those may indeed drop the standalone mode and be PCVR only. The use of a single mold, same hardware, and same software means that we can devote 100% of our efforts towards refining the Crystal and all of those stability and performance improvements will apply directly to our other models. In fact the Crystal will be the best supported device we have ever made as it's functionality is the basis for all our other models. We are constantly rolling out updates to improve the user experience and those updates will all come together. We have some great stuff coming, some of which I believe will satisfy exactly what you just listed that you want.

You say that there is a major drawback from every HMD compared to the Index when in my experience, the Aero is an upgrade in nearly every aspect, with no drawbacks in my eyes. The FOV is what everyone wants to bring up with the Index, but my measured FOV with the Aero is 108 horizontal which is the same FOV with the Index.
The Aero from top to bottom is above average quality material, where Index is known to have cheaper parts that are riddled with breaking or issues (I have had 3 RMA's already within 8 months of owning the Index), customer support from Varjo is far beyond any other VR company, Aero weighs significantly less, it has auto IPD so the fit is perfect visually every time, the out of box comfort is the best of any HMD available unlike the Index which required a comfort kit, tilting the facial interface, and needs a front USB fan or between the eyes feel like its sitting on a volcano. Which brings up that the Aero has a built in fan, that I forgot was even there until I occasionally feel a nice refreshing breeze within the HMD. Plus you get to use whichever audio headphones you enjoy most and mic. For me, nothing beats open back Sennheiser headphones that seem to be made for the Aero since they fit one another flawlessly. Add on my wireless mod mic and you've got audio that can't be beat. The tracking uses the best part of the Index which are the 2.0 basestations and knuckle controllers. And the tracking is flawless as well. I've not once had tracking issues with the Aero over the 600+ hours of using one and I have a VR library of around 200 titles that I rotate evenly through. The Varjo software is top of the line as well and the Aero is supported by native SteamVR. And this all without mentioning the best part of the Aero, which is the lifelike visuals. The edge to edge clarity, 35PPD, around 4K resolution per eye, extremely bright, fantastic colors, huge sweet spot, no glare, no screen door, no funny issues like warping or screen tearing, etc. Plus the Aero is highly reliable and just works as intended. You put it on, turn on the pc and HMD, and you are in OBS recording without any tinkering or issues.
Needless to say, the Aero has been legit near flawless for my wants and needs. I can't wait until all VR users get to experience what I've been fortunate to use for the last 7 months. I'm in VR 4-6 hours a day, and I'm always showing others my experiences via live streaming so others can get an idea and hopefully learn something while having fun. And every time the Aero gets put on, it's a mind blowing experience that never gets old. Even games I've played hundreds of hours, I catch myself just pausing and taking it all in as it truly is an amazing experience.
I've only used my Index once since getting the Aero and all the flaws poured out and I can't see myself ever using the Index again. Varjo and the Aero deserve more recognition and hopefully the incredible technology is mainstream sooner than later because, WOW. Sorry for the long message. Cheers!

Atm I'm only interested in PCVR. I'm not gonna buy a PS5 to play VR. I do not at all care about playing mobile games in a headset(I've had the Rift S and put 2500 hours on it until it broke). I've had 2 quest 2's and the compression just makes PCVR feel like crap. We can't get the index in Norway, though with the amount of basestations and controllers you run through using that thing I'm not sure I'd bother either way, even with our very consumer protecting by-law national warranty laws, it's just a hazzle to have to send stuff in and get it repaired/swapped all the time. Not to mention I haven't seen a single PCVR game where the forums aren't slap full of people complaining about features not working on the index controllers.
But, as Matt mentions, the biggest reason I can't be bothered to actually buy another headset is just, there's no software(mainly games) worth buying one for. The landscape is so barren and dried out.

We're at the point now in VR where I really think future headsets all need to offer some form of eye tracking - whether that means it's built-in or an attachment piece - for under $1000 USD. PSVR2 has the right idea for future proofing their headset and supporting foveated rendering for performance improvements. I don't think I'll be upgrading from my current VR setup (nearly 3 years old now) until something like that comes out.

Have you given that a good amount of time b/c it’s great. Super comfortable, high quality build, great lens. Yes FOV isn’t as big but big enough. Audio not built in which is the other gripe but headphones can be plugged in. You should comment on that as I’m sure other high end VR folks like myself are prob thinking the same. It’s the clear alternative until big screen gets in people’s hands although the aero still has better visuals.

At AWE I made sure to try the Varjo XR3 then the Pimax Crystal.
The Varjo XR3 is well balanced, no pixels at all, smooth framerate, mediocre FOV, and has eye tracking, but I didn't like the color saturation at all.
The Pimax Crystal is literally crystal clear, good color saturation, a good horizontal FOV and especially vertical, and has eye tracking.
I did encounter a stutter when following a ship that was flying by but maybe that was because they were using a 4070. The
Crystal is definitely built for simmers because like Bradley said, after a while it will possibly put strain on your neck from the weight even though
    it's balanced well.

@PeVoNZ For users who are not familiar with our brand I would recommend waiting until after the pre-order period. Users are under no obligation to participate in the Early Adoption phase. I will very happily suggest waiting a little bit for more stability improvements to make a purchase. For those familiar with our brand and who have purchased before I believe they trust our expertise and our quality of service. We work hard to make sure our customers are satisfied, and I think that some of our official responses to this initial shipping hassles show that.
Imo however, even at 1600 USD our headset is a great deal even if it didn't have those extra features at all. With only inside out tracking, PCVR over cable, and auto IPD it is already a better deal than the Aero. 700 dollars cheaper, before basestations and controllers and audio are added to the Aero price, and we include the controllers, batteries, audio, etc in the box with a wider fov, local dimming support, and better colors and clarity. The extra features simply improve the value proposition of the headset. The base features which are already activated are truly priced very aggressively in the marketplace. However it is our job to deliver on our promises and all extra features will be added as soon as we possibly can and users will receive the best customer support we can muster. We are very thankful for our passionate user base and their willingness to participate with us at this early stage.

@farmertrueVR The binocular overlap is bad. There's a translucent V in my field of view because of the lense design. The fov is too small, especially verticaly. Red shift and chromatic aberration is a problem, and turning from right to left produces minute micro stutter. Still no local dimming nor dynamic foviated rendering. I won't even mention the mic and headphones.

    • @farmertrueVR

@@kangjames2492 I guess my face is ideal for the Aero. My measured FOV is 108H x 78V which is far more than I expected. I've not once thought "this FOV needs to be larger". On other headsets you get this binocular vision but not on the Aero.
I've not experienced the translucent V nor any micro stutters. I have seen the red shift but that was only because I was purposely trying to create that issue to see what others were talking about. It's not anything I would have ever noticed unless I dfidn't hear about it from others and purposely tried to see it. Local dimming isn't coming to the Aero but dynamic foveated rendering is already available. There isn't a need for local dimming but it would be nice as would most additional features.
You should mention the mic and headphones. It's one of the reasons I prefer the Aero over other HMDs. With the Aero it allows me to utilize my preferred mic and headphones. All Built in audio solutions in VR HMD's are not on the level that I'm able to use with my Aero. Open back Sennheiser headphones and wireless mod mic from Antlion pair perfectly with the Aero and thankful they didn't add built in like other HMDs.
Sounds to me like the Aero just isn't your HMD. Thankfully I don't have the issues with mine that you have. Like I said, the Aero is exactly what I've been wanting from VR and then some. I can't wait until this quality of HMD is more widely available because it is special.

Index is 809 grams, and Crystal is 960 grams with the battery, that's like 150 gr difference, and Crystal actually feels better since the battery acts as a counterbalance. It's funny that bradley hates weight the most about Crystal and loves the Index, i don't know what to think, it's fine to dislike things over others, but blatantly lie is the worsts thing for a youtuber, unsubscribed.

I have a feeling this is a disingenuous, unfair, deliberately biased video. I saw another video that mentioned a youtuber(unnamed) that was deliberately seeking out only negative information regarding Pimax in order to confirm their bias....that was this channel wasn't it? There's a video here on youtube that shows a guy going from box to gameplay in less than two minutes called "Is Pimax Crystal VR Headset really that hard to set up and use?" It kind of shows how ridiculous or technologically incompetent some of these pimax haters really are. Sure there could be unique issues but this is how my experience with Pimax has been through three headsets. Maybe I am just special but I don't seem to have any of these nightmare issues one or two people on youtube seem to have.

Your feelings mean nothing in the face of facts. I showed how pimax delivered two broken headsets and its a very know issue. Pimax also confirmed their software has issues with the rtx 4090. Do you have a 4090? They also just pushed a software update to correct the floor position issue. And the biggest issue is the weight. 1.2 kilos is pretty insane when all new headsets are getting lighter and lighter. I doubt I'll see a response back because there is nothing you can say

@@Gamingwithmatteo311 Here's my response: You're a clown. I sure do have a 4090 and I am far from a Pimax fanboy. I agree with some of your criticism including the weight but the fact that you can't find one good thing to say about a headset that has the best display in the history of mankind that is probably a thousand dollars cheaper than the nearest competitor when you factor in base stations, controllers, and audio says more about you, your channel, and your ability to be a fair and balanced "reviewer" than anything you could ever say about Pimax. Stick with a quest 2 bud.

Thanks guys, really enjoyed this chat. Was thinking about the Pimax Crystal for MSFS, which is does have it's merit, after all said and done it is the clearest display in VR and you can't really put a price on that but I declined to get one for the simple reason I don't want to ignore the rest of the VR industry and I feel buying a VR headset just to sim it like ridng a bike only in the dark. I need more. Coming from a HP Reverb G2, I'll probably buy the Quest 3, it has comparable resolution, better lenses, tracking and software and hopefully should reconnect me to the type of VR experiences I enjoyed with the CV1.

Pimax should be doing better, something about their business model has them skipping steps and hoping things work out instead of addressing issues and changing things that don’t work to more simple and effective. I feel they should just focus on ONE thing and do it right . They have the skills , just not executing plans well and keeps hurting reputation . Some think scamming, I think they trying but feel pressure and don’t just do best they can do with one headset to counteract years of awesome stuff … BUT … lol .
Hope they figure out this push , they kinda surprising still banging away after the amount of fail so I respect them trying for sure . Just gotta buckle down so one thing “ perfect “ as possible .

I like this collab because you guys both tell it like it is. The only thing they should've focused on is a high res high fov pcvr headset with eyetracking. Standalone is waste of time because the headset is just too big, they will never have a decent library, games would probably look like sh*t because there is no way that an XR2 can push that many pixels and the battery probably won't last more then 30 mins if you need one in wired mode.

Versus the Valve Index, the Bigscreen Beyond has more clarity and better comfort. But then it has a substantially smaller FOV and lacks built in speakers. Having to BYOA (Bring Your Own Audio) and wear headphones over a VR headset sucks.
Like Matteo mentioned, it's very frustrating that 4 years later, nobody has released a VR headset which is the equal or better of the Index across the board.
The Index got it right. It wasn't ahead of its time. It's that all these subsequent VR headsets have had bad product decisions that really miss the mark. It's like they don't learn from or build upon the Index.
The Quest 2 sells because its cheap. It offers a lesser experience at a lesser price point. It's like 80-90% of the Index experience for half the price.
4 years later, at least one company should be selling a VR headset (the whole kit, not just headset alone) which is better than the Index across the board for $800.
Some people like Bradley are saying the Beyond is finally replacing the Index for them. But it's only barely, and _it's twice as expensive as the Index_. 4 years later. 4. Years. Later.
