Great points. You know your BMW stuff. I just got a '08 M6 convertible. Main reason why I got it is that V10. That engine will be a legend. I also had the AMG CLS63 when it came out. But when you want raw performance with a real race feel, the Mercedes isn't even close. The SMG grew on me. Makes a lousy automatic but it matches the car and is clearly meant to be used in manual mode. I grew up in BMW town, (Munich, Germany) and you are right on. These are built to come alive at 100mph and the pull right up to 200mph. People looking to be fast of the line 0-40 stuff American muscle will do. But having many no speed limit areas on the Autobahn that is where we battle it out. Top speed and like 100-160 mph range while holding high speeds in curving sections. That is what these cars are built for. These type natural aspirated engines will never come back in the age of EPA and electric. Rod bearings....well...It's a race inspired engine and they need to be taken care of. I will simply have mine replaced when I hit 60k miles. (Got 40k now). I am changing oil every 5k miles and I am sending oil samples to lab. If you look back at high performance cars from the past, i.e. Testarossa, Porsche 930, that is nothing. And the rod bearing job is about $ 3,500 so....all things considered, that is not so bad. I heard a lot more horror stories about the N63 engine. A lot of people "don't get" real BMW. You clearly do.
I bought a 2010 in late 2019 - alpine white mint - was just over 20k mi now just under 40k - got a new SMG and pump free under aftermarket warranty and now still under dealership repair warranty - and now I got a code 😮 I paid for clutch and flywheel.
You've just convinced me to get the rear diffuser and the trunk spoiler. My mechanic has taken care of my '07 meticulously therefore says no worry's on the rod bearings. I too love this car and will never sell. Thanks for the video. Outstanding presentation!
Love the car. I have a 2010 E64 55k miles. Car is well maintained by a BMW race shop. So far have been throttle actuators. Get the MOTUL oil sent out for testing and so far no signs of rod bearing issues. Car is Nardo Grey with Silverstone interior. Full carbon package inside with custom flat bottom steering wheel. Has wheels, suspension, Full Dinan exhaust, Dinan Carbon fiber intakes, carbon lip and diffuser, Dinan pulley, body matched rear spoiler on decklid. Thing is a beast and sooo much fun to drive.
It is the SMG pump priming in preparation for you shifting the car into neutral to start it. And yes the con rod bearings need to be done before it starts to make noise as you could turn a bearing and seize the motor or fill the vanos with copper bearing debris and destroy the vanos actuators and pump. These cars are so cheap now that even a good example plus a rod bearing job is a cheap super car. With the top speed limiter deleted the M6 will run with the F430, R8, Gallardo, 997/998 Turbo and C63(6.2na) all the way to 337km/h / 205mph for 35% of the price. See the link: ua-cam.com/video/UrnI5JziDgs/v-deo.html 2010 M6 Owner
Amazing spec.. I've got the Indianapolis red with black interior. Personally i like the brake light on the boot lid if there's no spoiler. P.s when locking the car without the key fob, touch the actual lock mechanism where you would slide the key in. That's where the sensor is located. I only found that out after 4 years of ownership a month ago haha All the best.
Great video. I have a 07 convertible S85 in my third year of ownership and just like my previous 6 series it’s a love hate relationship. Except I’ve driven my M considerably less and it’s been even more unreliable. 2500 miles total I’ve put on it because I’m working on it more then the days are sunny up here in the PNW to drive it. It’s basically a high maintenance garage whore at this point. I did the ABS pump/module, MAF sensors, pre & post cats, steering sensors, every fluid changed out, throws codes like no tomorrow, and next on the list is the Idler & Throttle Actuators. Luckily the oil labs I’ve sent out look good thus far but I’m dumping it before that needs to be done because that’d be the first job on this car I won’t do myself just simply due to not having a shop/lift space to do it in. If it caught fire or went for a joy ride at this point I wouldn’t shed a tear. It’s a beast when it’s acting right and I love it but the headache has out weighed the joy. Plus any decent shop nearby who’d actually do a good job to work on it wants an arm and a leg. First thing I priced out was the rod & bearing job after I bought it because I planned to keep the car and it’s 5-7k. Places simply do not want to work on it. It’s my unicorn I’m have to take out to pasture. Wish it wasn’t the case but it’s a money suck and I’m sure I’ll kick myself 30 years from now when it’s worth $$$ and much more rare.
I have a 2007 M6 convertible, 72,000 miles. It's black so my washers don't show. I also have a love hate relationship with the car. So many things tear up just after the warranty is gone. Transmission SMG failure, $5,200 repair. Brake module $3,200 repair. Roof never works, spent maybe over a thousand for sensors and adjustments. Power steering pump, put the wrong fluid in it and ruined it, duh, that was around $700. Thermostat, over $1,000 can't remember exact. Fan is acting up and showing codes. Replaced all the coil packs, spark plugs and cam sensors, over $1,000 in parts. The rear brake light you were showing has had the end tip broken off twice by car wash towels, and half the LED's are out on the third one, $350. each. WTF. Tire pressure sensors at least all four, maybe more, just over $100. a pop. Has depreciated from $114,000 to maybe $25,000 on a good day. Insurance is seriously high, call Hagerty. There is more, but I will stop there. A 911 turbo Porsche will blow your doors off. Same with a Mercedes SL65. Mine is 500lbs heavier than yours. That's like having two fat boys in the back seat in a drag race. However, it sounds great and looks fabulous. The ladies love it. So, make sure you have a shit load of money if you want to play with one of these. Now you say the cam bearings will soon take a shit. BMW says that's only an M3 problem, why do I believe you more.
Wow hahaha. But yes the rod bearings are a problem with the s85 and s65 motors. People usually upgrade them with better material bearings and so have I. I went with vac motorsport bearings with arp bolts.
For the locking the car part you have to touch the non door handle part it's better for the driver side just use the emergency keyhole grove to the right of the handle
Love your 2008 M6 and your enthusiasm for the S85. I have a final year 2010 E63 w/ Eisenmann sport exhaust. I think just like you. I don’t think I’ll ever sell mine, there simply isn’t any other car like it. As far as the washer spouts, they’re not really noticeable on my black sapphire M6. Maybe you can plastidip them white so don’t stick out like a sore thumb? Regarding rod bearings, I’m on the fence with mine, what mileage do you recommend doing them at? FYI Europe had a MY2005 for the M6, North American release was 2006. .
So you are saying that if you don't get the rod bearings done that the engine will blow up? My indy says that unless there is a problem you should not do this. What are your thoughts?
Well it’s preventative so your engine doesn’t throw a rod out of the block or start ticking. Because worse case scenario if one of the rods go bad then you have to replace the whole motor. Would u rather do a 2,500$ rod bearing job so you can have a piece of mind or have to look for a new engine 10k+ and still not have a piece of mind because most likely the bearings aren’t going to be done on that engine either. It’s just the better thing to do. These cars are about how u maintain them. If you do everything that needs to be done you’ll have less headaches to worry about
So nice.. I love my E63 (sadly not an M6), I think the design has just got better as its aged! Curious.. What’s the ball park cost for rod bearing replacements? Seriously considering one..
I would not go 06-07 I would prefer you to look at 08-10s and make sure you have history records of the vehicle of the maintenance. As well as I wouldn’t go past 80k mile one
@@DashAutowerks found an 08 with 50k miles, i heard the 08-10 don’t have as many problems as the 06-07 ones do but not sure what exactly those problems are

I love this car but one thing worth mentioning is that i cant get over the ugly front of it... i think its out of proportion.. the front end its fairly big.. and the headlights dont make it look mean... and the kidneys shout have been like the m5... on the m6 there also too small

With the automatic locks, you're supposed to put your finger over the keyhole.
Check out the competition m6 Hood, very rare but has more styling, wonder if anyone makes them
Yes, I’ve been thinking ab that just super hard to find them
Put your finger next to the keyhole on driver door to lock it. Thats where the sensor is.
