    As an Arachnologist, I love that they use real spiders! And while the spiders are portrayed by huntsman spiders, which are harmless, in the film they are labelled as belonging to the six-eyed spider family, which are indeed known for their potent venom (this is the family that brown recluses come from). That’s a really neat detail! They also seem to have done a good job portraying spider behavior other than one key point that always bugs me: why do people and movies think spiders lay their eggs in people/corpses? There are wasps that do that *to* spiders, but no spiders do that sort of thing!

    • @obyone878
      @obyone878 День тому +3

      I think it's in reference to something I heard about ages ago, where rumors were spread about certain foreigners or Jewish groups laying eggs in people. But, I can't find much on where I heard that. I know there were blood libel lies and ideas that certain groups eat people, but wasn't able to find specifics on reproductive parasitism lies.

      I think, while they used specific spiders in the film production, they were meant to be a new species of spider, in the story.

      I think the whole nesting in people thing comes from writers just wanting the spiders to be scarier. Im certain one spider movie at some point thought of the idea then other screen writers adopted it. I wouldnt be able to act in these films with IRL spiders. Id have to do the Eight Legged Freaks full CGI spider route because Id be too scared. Who knows maybe thatd improve a performance 😅

      @@BelialTnTn I mean, they were found in burrows in the beginning of the movie right? Now normally the response would be to run for somewhere dark, not stand still, but I could see it where this species is overwhelmed by the light and freezes instinctually.

    It didn't occur to me sooner but the memorial wall of victims at the end really brought back memories of the Grenfell Tower fire and how authorities were aware that the building was not up to modern fire codes and many people were told by firefighters to stay in their apartments and not evacuate. Come to think of it, I think this film must be directly inspired by the Grenfell Tower fire.

      Plainly Difficult did a quite straightforward &fairly short (~10min iirc) vid about what happened. Basically, corners cut everywhere, like using cheaper but _flammable_ cladding that was also not built to code, making an actual tinder box of the low-income housing block. And authorities insisted that the residents "stay put", plus so many other issues. Such an absolute travesty. And many of the survivors are STILL on waiting lists for housing after they lost everything in the fire!

    • @from_no_where
      @from_no_where 2 дні тому

      The Grenfell Tower fire was an atrocity, especially in how the government responded to it. 72 people were allowed to die because fixing a building (or making it sure it was built to code in the first place!) wasn't profitable. I remember Tory MPs even jeered at Jeremy Corbyn once for wearing a green tie as a mark of respect for the victims, _while relatives of the victims looked on._ Just horrible all around.

    Bless Huntsman spiders for their services to filmed horror. My understanding is that they are non-venomous to humans, docile, and like to follow their fellows, making them easier to wrangle. That said, how anyone in Australia, Africa, etc. manages to cope with these critters as common household pests is beyond me. Even un-embiggened by CG, their insane leg span is an automatic evolutionary NOPE for humankind. Eeesh.

    i think it’s funny they had to introduce parasitiodism as a trait (something spiders never do as far as i’m aware, but is something that they instead suffer from via wasps) in order to make the spiders truly menacing.
    also omg i’m so glad this one has the spiders really only reacting instead of attacking. i’m also really happy with the things towards the end that show the spiders and people interacting non-fatally and with understanding, which is something i wanted badly from Sting but i suppose wasn’t the right movie for that.

    I don't know if the director meant this, but I took his message to be: Importing a problem, notice that it has a lot of trouble co-existing with the main species, dumping it into a low-income area, and being shocked at the negative result and blaming the low-income people for not being able to get along with the problem.

    I hate spiders so so so much. My worst nightmares are about spiders. I've dreamt of my entire home being covered in those webs with the spider sitting inside it, and there were ones who got to dog size and bigger. I had to walk around and i was so scared/grossed out I couldn't get rid of them i just tried not to touch anything 😭 why do our brains do this to us

    Iguanas aren't poisonous whered you even get that? Also wait wait wait. Was that spider at the end suppose to be one of the invasive ones or just a native one he picked up while walking through the woods?
    But yeah really enjoyed this one. Spiders are great for horror films.

      Iguanas aren't venomous, but their bites can get infected pretty easily, like most reptiles. Probably an innocent mistake.

    I consider myself to be something of a "recovering arachnophobe." Like most people, I grew up with spiders being a potent symbol of fear. The more I learned about them, the more frightening they became. I remember once describing spiders to a friend as "the animal kingdom's equivalent to a serial killer" due to their hunting behaviours. A few years ago, however, I read the book "Children of Time" by Adrian Tchaikovsky. It's a sci-fi novel set over a course of centuries that charted the rise of a civilization of sapient jumping spiders (in tandem with a human story set on a spaceship). The author conveys an incredibly impressive vision of what a civilization shaped by the biology of spiders would look like and the potential revolutionary historical moments in it's history (like their invention of ant-based computing and their first space missions in silk airships). Even though the spider narrative follows no particular characters, it does an incredible job of humanising the spiders and making you root for them. It's really changed how I look at spiders. I'm now the kind of guy who will see a massive spider in his house and just leave it alone and let it stay there.

But first and formost I wanted to mention you look healthy and energetic and in a much better place overall then let's say 10 years ago. Normally I wouldn't comment on people's well-being I know so little about but you mentioned struggeling with and overcoming depression in another video and I think it really shows. Looking forward to many interesting videos by you in the years to come!

    As a huge spider lover I do worry about things that stoke the fear on towards them, but I don't think it's too hypocritical or contradictory. Spiders being a bit of a sympathetic force that is just trying to survive, but is still shown as an ultimately terrifying horror here fall into the man vs nature - nature isn't inherently cruel but still has to exist? We love all kinds of dangerous animals and to a point understand even though a tiger is beautiful it is terrifying and can quickly become horrific if we were being hunted by one. Maybe I'm overthinking that reflection in the beginning though!

That being said, this is one of my favorite obscure horror films bc the skin crawling horror of being surrounded by giant spiders (or near a giant one at all) is so real and kind of fun to watch through film. And now knowing what this story is about, I appreciate all the more!

    As someone who both worked at a school in the projects and who sincerely loves spiders, I completely get the parallel: you can spend so much time educating people about why they should care, and they will say they understand, but when they come face-to-face with the reality, they generally run away in a fit of squeamishness. This movie sounds brilliant and its going straight onto me to-watch list.

    There's definitely something to the idea of the spiders just wanting to exist, but there's also a huge misfire in the analogy by having them "out breed" the residents and "displace" them that sounds really damn close to some of the ways real life pundits talk about immigrants and the impoverished.

    But seriously. Be kind to your eight-legged friends. They take care of all the bugs that do cause problems, AND they have PAWS. Yes. Spiders have paws. That is adorable
