As a cartoonist and lifelong comic lover I enjoy Chris’ channel because it exposes me to new characters, creators and comics. This episode is a good example of why I support his channel. Scud is also a perfect example of breaking from the mainstream drawing style of capes and six-pack abs, and showing the world that making comics is open to anyone with dedication. Great episode Chris, hang in there, my brother!
Cody Ford, completely agree thanks to Chris I’ve been introduced to new things this episode is a prime example of spreading the word to those of us that other wise wouldn’t of heard of Scud.
Thanks for the Video. Hang in there, I have really bad Crohn's Disease. I've had to stop working and am disabled. I am unable to go out and am fighting depression as well. You make my days bearable and I am so excited to see when you post. Stay strong and when you are having a bad day, reach out to us. We love you and will hang out with on a live stream anytime.
I was unaware of this comic and it's creator history, but I can tell this is straight up my alley and definitely will enjoy diving into it.This is the third comic you've introduced me (the other two being Planetary and Moebius comics), so thank you very much!
I remember as a spiderman superfan at age 10 being given this by my dad and crying when I finished the collection because it ended on such a cliffhanger. Then a couple years later Schrab decided to finish the story and I finished it with my dad by my side. This and the Maxx are the greatest Indie comics of all time IMO
As to the subject of your review, it seems like Scud shares the lighthearted don't-take-yourself-too-seriously goofball universe tone of one of my fave 90s books, Mike Allred's *MADMAN*
It's awesome seeing this, especially after learning about your channel because of GVP. The Harmon/Roiland/Schrab universe expands evermore! SCUD is so good.
I first became aware of Scud when I was 12 and went to a comics convention that was in the lobby of a hotel in down town Kenosha, WI. It was literally a room with maybe a dozen or so collectors and their long boxes selling back issues out of their collections. The only creators that i remember being there we the guys making Scud and I'm pretty sure I got a Scud sticker at this convention from them. I can't remember if I got the first issue though. Even though that convention didn't grow into something bigger it's still pretty cool to have gone to it and seen such a grass roots event being put on by people that just loved comics.
I LOVE SCUD. Thank you for this episode. Im a huge fan of Rob Schrab too, so much of what he's done is inspirational and crazy. Love that that whole channel 101 crew is getting a lot of projects and attention lately
When I lived in Chicago, my GF (at the time) and I went to see Dead Ale Wives and took our SCUD #1 to have Rob sign for us. He was super shocked and really excited to sign it and grateful we were loyal readers. I think he was even more socked that we kept it in a hard plastic case. lol
I just started reading Scud! Awesome to see you cover it just as I'm in the middle of it. Love your channel! Best comic book UA-cam channel if you ask me!
I have been a fan of SCUD since Meeting Rob at Comi-Fest in Philly in 1993, way before it hit. The man was, and still is, THE WHOLE SHEBANG, and SCUD is truly a treat with every read.
DUDE! I had no idea that you suffer from depression. Ironically, your funny insightful videos help me deal with *my* depression. You're doing great work so keep on keepin' on! ~Hugs from a fellow cubavera/bowling shirt aficionado
Yeah, I remember seeing Rob's vlogs on UA-cam years ago documenting his work on the final issue of Scud. That's what got me interested in Scud, because I didn't know about it in the 90s when it was originally released. Awesome vid, Chris! Keep up the good work.
Love these episodes. I've known about Scud for a long, long time but just never really took the plunge to actually read it. But seeing a few of the highlights here and hearing the energy and enthusiasm for it in your voice, I'm finally convinced to give that Whole Shebang volume a shot.
Chris, one of the best parts of Scud was the sound track on the inside cover fir the panels. First and only time I've ever seen that in a comic. Mad genius🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
My cousin had a collection of S.C.U.D. comic books he would let me barrow and read. I've been a big S.C.U.D. fan for a long time. I would always consider him my favorite comic book character. I did get kinda sick of no one knowing who we was though.
So happy to see you growing your channel, Chris! Since the very beginning, your content was always very good. Chin up, my friend, even battling your own demons you keep bringing smiles to a lot of peoples faces. That`s the mark of a modern hero.
Thank you for talking about Scud! I had the first couple issues from back in the 1990s and loved it, but I lost track of it as life went on. I'm happy to hear the story continued. I'll have to pick up the collected edition to see how everything turned out.
Don't forget about the Scud video game on the Sega Saturn from 1997! It had one of the best soundtracks on a game I've ever heard, and one of my favorites! Excellent mix of Alternative, Electro-Industrial, Ska, Punk, Jazz... really crazy mix. 🖤 I played it as a kid and it was my first exposure to Scud- I didn't even know it was based on a comic until YEARS later.
I picked up the Whole Shebang on a whim at a stand during a convention and it was a great choice. I had no idea he was attached to so many other things I love, too.
Thank you for this episode. A dear friend of mine worked on House of Cosbys as a writer and passed away shortly before moving to L.A. to pursue that career. It's been nice to know that strange cartoon earned a little name for itself.
I loved Scud when I was a teenager! My friend, John, got a second printing of issue #1, and we’d read it over and over. We liked the idea and look of him so much, yet we didn’t own any more issues. Our town’s comic book store closed around this time, so any comics we got was from a book store, which was only the big two publishers. That was also the reason why I stopped reading Spawn: I just couldn’t find the issues. But it definitely is a series of like to go through.
straight up my fav comic in high school. I traveled an hour to another town just to get issues of the comic. And unknowingly at the time, my first exposure to Rob Schrab and Dan Harmon. Drywall is still one of my fav characters ever.
I've been listening to Harmontown for a while now. So glad you've exposed me to some Schrab history! And if you're reading this Rob, you're not a cheapy peepy in my heart
I really love this offbeat far out comics back in the 90s because you'd get these way crazy characters and just out there story lines that were just so entertaining
Sarah Silverman once said, "Most people wipe from front to back. Rob Schraub wipes from side to side". On another note, I had a friend from my hometown who had a good deal of success on Channel 101. His name was JD Ryznar and his show was called " Yacht Rock". It has inspired a whole genre labelling music by the same name.
I was made aware of Scud back in the mid to late 90s when the super obscure Sega Saturn game came out based on the comic. It sounded like super fun idea though I could never find anything at stores at the time. Thanks for letting me know about The Whole Shebang, definitely adding that to my list of things to get first chance I get!
My brother gave this to me to read when I was 7 years old. I'm not sure if he was a genius or irresponsible, but it completely blew my tiny mind with its awesome violence and weird humour.
Chris! Your work is top notch with great scope and depth- thank you. Sorry to hear about your problems with depression, and whilst I dare not declare myself a mental health expert, I think that lowering your alcohol intake is a good idea to alleviate those problems. I'm sure you've considered the thought, but i think the best first step is to stop drinking during filming videos- it adds a little bit of flavour to the vids but are ultimately not necessary to the main run.
It's gems like this that keep me watching. I love when u do mainstream but the Indies and foriegn comics are my fave! I think I remember seeing this one on the shelves and passing it by. At that time, I was marvel or bust. Growing older has it perks. Great episode Chris!
I can’t believe the Dan Harmon who made “Community” and “Rick and Morty” got started with a comic book. It’s really cool and shows that everyone has different paths to success
This was one of the most interesting videos I've seen on this channel. I'm so ignorant about comic books in general but always wanted to get into them. Shows like this are a window for casuals like me to look into and see clearly what is out there I might really enjoy. This comic in particular has really grabbed me. Love the style and humour. Also I can't help but want to colour that entire comic. The strong yellow really leaps off the page making it easier to see through this guys art style. The Black and white pages are harder to see. But maybe that's because I'm watching on a computer. It would probably be very different holding it in your hand. What the heck. My comment is so long no ones going to read it anyway so I'll add that I bet in the near future it will be possible to use A.I to colour in comics. Googles can already colour photographs perfectly to look completely realistic so I bet it could do comics too.
I'm currently reading The Whole Shabang. It is truly one of the best things that I've ever read. Rob is a mad genius! It's like TMNT if they never went commercial.
I loved SCUD throughout the 90s.....glad u made an episode highlighting the fun it was....have you ever heard of BEAUTIFUL STORIES FOR UGLY CHILDREN? It was on par with this niche...
I agree that Tick, Cerebus, Bone and Madman were probably the most visible "independent" comics at the time (I guess you can also count Beanworld since Larry Marder was brought on to Image to give them some cred) but there were still plenty of independent publishers putting out some great stuff: Chaos Comics had Evil Ernie and Lady Death, Malibu had Dinosaurs for Hire, Kitchen Sink had Omaha and Black Hole, and my personal favorite Slave Labor Graphics had Milk and Cheese, Caffeine and Ariel Schrag's books. It was also the time when Drawn and Quarterly was really ramping up with: Optic Nerve, Eightball, Peep Show, Jimmy Corrigan, Berlin, etc. And I guess Fantagraphics is the most well-known independent publisher today due to their award winning Peanuts and Disney reprint books. I'm not sure if I'd call it a "rebuilding" phase since it was really mainstream comics that collapsed leaving the field wide-open for the independents in the late 90's-2000's.
JthM was my independent DIY style Comic in the 90s. Few things inspired my personal writing and drawing style like Vasquez in my late teens. Also Rob Schrab wrote the foreword to the JthM collection.
This was a great episode! I'm definitely gonna go out and read this one! Actually, my local comic book store is the producer of a different indie comic you brought up, The Tick!
I'd read some issues, and probably still have them, back in the day. Loved the art, humor and overall theme, but, it was around the time I took a [long] break from comics. I'll be looking for The Whole Shabang(sp) next stop into my local brick and mortar shop. Thank you very much for reminding me of this bit of brilliance.
I ran across Scud in the 90's and it always had its hooks in me. Years later I was finally able to pick up the Whole Shebang, and I can say without hyperbole that it's my favorite comic. It's silly, it's sweet, it's frantic, it's insane, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Then again, you'd expect a guy with a Scud tattoo to be somewhat biased.
I can't believe Scud is originally a comic book character, i only knew him through the Sega Saturn dual gun wielding game, i can't wait to buy this now, hope i find it
Chris, I love yah vidz....I'm so Glad I came across ur channel sum how-i dnt even remember....wait I think I do! The "Bad 90s costumez" video I randomly saw on recommend....hahah....
If you liked Scud, you will absolutely love The Mask (The comics by Dark Horse I mean, not the movie.).
Agreed.
Read both. Great, fun comics.
I'm mr miskys look at me
Does scud remind you of that character
And if you like that, you'll like Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.
but stay away from its sequel Son of the Mask lol
As a cartoonist and lifelong comic lover I enjoy Chris’ channel because it exposes me to new characters, creators and comics. This episode is a good example of why I support his channel. Creating dinosaur zombies because their brains are smaller targets?!
I'm taking notes for uh...non-apocalypse reasons.
Yes. Shuds! Thank You Rebeltaxi for making me aware of this comic.
WE'RE ALWAYS IN OUR CLUB HOUSE GETTING HIGH

EVERYBODY WISHES WE WOULD DIE
SUPERFUCKERS!
HEREEEEE WE COOOOME, LIKE A BOOOOMB

"SCUD is reaaaalllll Marty! SCUD is reaaallll!" lmao!
Thanks for the Video. Hang in there, I have really bad Crohn's Disease. I've had to stop working and am disabled. I am unable to go out and am fighting depression as well. I hope you're doing well🤞
Hey, I hope things are doing well for you man.
Hope you’re doing okay, I am sorry to hear that
I hope you got better buddy 🤘
"Scud is Real"
Honestly, based on what I'm seeing, that's an accurate idea. It's based on the artist's personal life after all.
Making it helps with your depression watching it helps with mine
I learned of Scud about 20 years ago. About 8 years ago, I found out that he had completed the series and my life was complete.
Thanks for being vulnerable about your depression. I love your show. It cheers me up all the time
I was unaware of this comic and it's creator history, but I can tell this is straight up my alley and definitely will enjoy diving into it.This is the third comic you've introduced me (the other two being Planetary and Moebius comics), so thank you very much!
Had to order the collection from amazon immediately. Scud had been on my 'need-to-read-this' list forever.
I remember as a spiderman superfan at age 10 being given this by my dad and crying when I finished the collection because it ended on such a cliffhanger. This made me pick up the "Whole Shebang" version of Scud (all comics in one book)
im fighting depression for some years and you help a lot with what you said and your videos, the world need more ppl like u! thanks a lot bro!!!!
It's awesome seeing this, especially after learning about your channel because of GVP. The Harmon/Roiland/Schrab universe expands evermore!

Later on a lot of that team moved to Los Angeles where I got to watch them play a lot. Very funny crew.
I just started reading Scud! Awesome to see you cover it just as I'm in the middle of it. Love your channel! Best comic book UA-cam channel if you ask me!
God I love this channel, I'm learning so much from the comic world. All while finding authors and artists that are inspiring. Great work!
Thank you for opening up about your depression! When content creators are vocal about their struggles, it really helps to end the stigma! +subbed
Absolutely LOVED Scud back in the 90s, it was my #1 comic way back then
I have been a fan of SCUD since Meeting Rob at Comi-Fest in Philly in 1993, way before it hit.
Always loved this channel, such a wholesome show! Keep up the good work
I read Scud about a year ago because of this video. Thanks a ton man. You do great work.

This video got me into Scud and I couldn't be happier
I just love that you talk about the most underrated comics so much😤😂👍
Thank you for doing SCUD! Long before Deadpool made headway into being the merc with the mouth, SCUD was doing it WAY before!!!
Big fan of Scud and I love the art. Nice episode.
scud was so different at the time. Really cool you took the time to make a video about him
So happy to see you growing your channel, Chris! Since the very beginning, your content was always very good. Chin up, my friend, even battling your own demons you keep bringing smiles to a lot of peoples faces. That`s the mark of a modern hero.

I recently started binging your videos and the second I saw scud I was absolutely pumped to see this! Scud is up there with Spidey in my eyes
Don't forget about the Scud video game on the Sega Saturn from 1997!
It had one of the best soundtracks on a game I've ever heard, and one of my favorites! Excellent mix of Alternative, Electro-Industrial, Ska, Punk, Jazz... really crazy mix. 🖤

"Your mileage may vary" is really turning into a catchphrase!
Also, I have to order the Scud tpb now... Thanks Chris!
I loved this comic back in the 90s! I felt like I was the only one who liked it. Thanks, this is a treat to watch and tickles my nostalgia bone.
I greatly enjoy your perspectives! And I enjoy learning about comics history as well.
I also live with depression. Thank you for sharing your experiences and de-stigmatizing an important health issue in our society. ❤
I just got the whole shebang! It is one of the most fun books I've ever read. Hands down
I picked up the Whole Shebang on a whim at a stand during a convention and it was a great choice. I had no idea he was attached to so many other things I love, too.

9 months ago you posted, and just some time ago it has become a reality :)
You're my favourite UA-camr Chris!
Came for the tropes.
Subbed for the content.
Stayed for the intros.
Man, you got me wanting to check this book out. Gonna start scouting around for a physical copy.
Dude, your chanel is my favorite on UA-cam.
Wow, such a massive amount of character and wit. I'm definitely checking this out
Rob Schrab seems like a great, fun indie creator and this sounds like a cool read.
Thanks for this video!
I'll Definitely check this out!
straight up my fav comic in high school. I traveled an hour to another town just to get issues of the comic. And unknowingly at the time, my first exposure to Rob Schrab and Dan Harmon. Drywall is still one of my fav characters ever.

thank you for your openness at the end of the video. Greetings from distant Chile.
Hi! You caught me being depressed. Good job Chris, Scud is my favorite comic.

Hugs, Dude... As one who also is surviving Chronic Depression... Keep the good contacts. Say goodbye to the bad ones.
I appreciate what ur doing Chris.
Lack of internet be damned I’ll STILL find a way to watch your channel every week
Great video! Keep making these videos, Chris. I really enjoy and learn from them!
"You caught me punishing my robot" would make a good euphemism.
I love love love Scud and Schrab! It's been my fav since the beginning! Can anyone help me locate a legit hardcover copy of the shebang?
Scud needs a movie!
NOW DO MAXX PLEASE
Heard of this a few years ago and was surprised I hadn't sooner. Now I've gotta check this out for myself finally.
What if Scud is not aware of the targets death? Does he have to confirm his targets death or there a system in place or network?
Some how his system would know and he would explode, somthing like that happens to another scud during the book
I’m rereading it because my first read through I stop after issue 14
I only recently learned that Dan Harmon was part of the famous DND “Then I’m attacking the darkness” sketch.
Thanks for this! Ordered this one right away, loved the artwork!
I'm currently reading The Whole Shabang. It is truly one of the best things that I've ever read. Rob is a mad genius! It's like TMNT if they never went commercial.
Loved Scud as a kid , he always had a koo look to him . a lot of great info in this video about behined the scenes stuff i didnt know about
I loved SCUD throughout the 90s.....glad u made an episode highlighting the fun it was....have you ever heard of BEAUTIFUL STORIES FOR UGLY CHILDREN?
I love that anyone else remembers Tales of the Beanworld!
JthM was my independent DIY style Comic in the 90s. Few things inspired my personal writing and drawing style like Vasquez in my late teens. Also
Rob Schrab wrote the foreword to the JthM collection.
I first seen and played Scud on the sega saturn. still love this game to this day.
Hey, fam, you're by no means the only person here dealing with depression & anxiety. Keep up the fight, & the good work!
WOO SCUD! You are indeed a man of taste.
This was a great episode! I'm definitely gonna go out and read this one! Actually, my local comic book store is the producer of a different indie comic you brought up, The Tick!
I grew up south of Boston going to NEC in Quincy.
I can't believe Scud is originally a comic book character, i only knew him through the Sega Saturn dual gun wielding game, i can't wait to buy this now, hope i find it
I'll have you know that thanks to this video, I bought the Scud TPB at my local comic store today. I was not prepared for it to weigh 10 lbs!
I'm really glad someone else remembers this one.
Scud is such a lovable character!
Chris, I love yah vidz....I'm so Glad I came across ur channel sum how-i dnt even remember....wait I think I do! The "Bad 90s costumez" video I randomly saw on recommend....hahah....
So scud is real?
I'm sold! Gonna get it for Christmas! That picture of Scud saying 'I'm jesus with a laser gun and you're all going to hell' sealed the deal.
