- In this video, learn to model a basic house in SketchUp with the push pull and offset tools!
♦SUPPORT ME♦ www.thesketchup...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To start, we’re going to draw the footprint of our house. If it’s a rectangle, you can just activate the rectangle tool by tapping the “R” key, then typing in the measurements of your house and hitting the enter key.
Now that we have the footprint of our house drawn, we’re going to use the push-pull tool to extrude our house into 3D. To do this, activate the push pull tool by tapping the “P” key, click once on the face of your house, then type in the height you’d like to see and hit the enter key. This will extrude your house at the height you entered.
Now that we have our house shape, we’re going to add slope to our roof. Probably the simplest way is to find the midpoint of your house, then use the line tool to draw a line up 3’. Once you’ve drawn your line up, you can draw lines to the two corners to create a face, then erase your center line so that the face you created is one uniform face. Then, use the push-pull tool to extrude this face to the back side of your house.
Remember that you can use inferencing as you do this to quickly draw this new shape to the back side of your house. You can click anywhere on the back side to do this.
Now what we’re going to do is use the offset tool to draw our eave. Remember, the offset tool will draw a series of lines based on the lines around the perimeter of a face. Activate the offset tool, click on your face, then type in a distance, like 6”, and hit the enter key. Now clean up the new face that was created, then push pull it so that you have a 12” overhang on one side, then extrude it back the other way so you have a 12” overhang on the other side.
Now, let’s add a door and a window. To do this, we’re going to use the rectangle tool to draw our door, then use the offset tool to create some trim. You can start by using the rectangle tool to draw your door - in this case, draw a rectangle that’s 3’ wide x 8’ high. Now, use the offset tool to draw 3” of trim. You can push-pull this trim 3” or so to give your trim some detailing.
Let’s do the same thing with our window - draw a window on the wall to the dimensions you’d like, then use the offset and push-pull tools to create your trim.
The other thing we can do now is create a chimney. To do this, I’m going to start by drawing one lrine right off our roof along the green axis. Once you’ve done this, you can use the rectangle tool to draw a rectangle the size of our chimney. From here, you can either extrude this rectangle down using the push-pull tool, or you can just manually draw in lines along the blue axis that intersect with your roof to fill in the faces. This is probably a cleaner solution.
Finally, if you want to, you can come in and add materials to your house using the materials section in your tray. This is quite easy - just click on the material you’d like, then click on the face you’d like to color in order to apply the material.
One thing I’m going to do really quick is add a wainscot to our model. To do this, all I’m going to do is use the move tool in copy mode to copy the lines around the base of our model up about 3’0”. Simple double click on the face on the bottom to select the perimeter, deselect the face by “Shift Clicking,” and use the move tool in copy mode to move the perimeter lines up about 3’0”. You can push pull it slightly to give it a little depth, then apply a brick material. You could even model a small cap in here if you wanted to.

It's 2022 and I still find this very helpful as a beginner guide. Thanks!
Very informative. I've learnt how to use sketchup in 20 mins.
Great to see this learning video. Thank you for explaining everyting so clearly and for teaching new things from the last video while reinforcing concepts and materials from session 1. I am learning alot. Thank you.
I like how, when you make tutorials for beginners, you don't assume much, you really show us each step, what to click or which key to press, etc.
Except seeing which tools are being activated. "Over here" is not something I understand as obvious (being a beginner), and the size of the pointer hinders seeing "here"... Maybe being descriptive while using the keyboard (which does not work all the time) and mouse... "along the top toolbar" or "on the left toolbar" as the mouse is flying from place to place. I rewind the video a bunch of times to catch up with the pointer. The video is good for content.
which one is the UP KEY?
It is soo boring
Where is the play list for this video Collection
This tutorial is so good.
I have a glitch. My up key to make chimney horizontal doesnt work. Any suggestions?
yes very helpful, thanks so much.
:)
I had trouble drawing my chimney. I couldn't get it to come out straight from the roof. I couldn't get a flat axis. Which keys do I click, push, pound or break to get it right? Using SketchUp 16 with windows 7.
When you drew your rectangle, did you lock it to the blue axis using the up arrow key? Activate the rectangle tool using the "R" key, then tap the up button to lock it to the blue axis, then type in your chimney dimensions and hit the enter key. Let me know if this helps!
Thank you for your help. I had to draw my rectangle on the ground, double click it on, then use the move tool to place it on the roof, and then use the push/pull tool to raise it up. I can't get my keyboard to function as you do like press "R" for rectangle tool. Is there a way to turn on my keyboard to do those kind of functions? Thanks again for your help--I find your videos very helpful!
TheSketchUpEssentials Is there another way to do this without using the arrow key? I can't seem to get it on the right plane either with the arrow key.
This isn’t the free version though. Is it?
Word
why is the video garbled?
Best Tutorials I’ve ever found. Giving complete instructions without making those of us watching feel like dummies... clear, concise, efficient descriptions and soooo easy to follow! Your voice is PERFECT for tutorials/teaching... THANK YOU SO MUCH! (I’m almost 60 yrs. old, and these have been perfect for me to continue to keep my interior design skills up to date. So helpful! Thank you !) I would LOVE a tutorial on setting up the actual screen. I can’t figure out how to get all my tools in the screen, instead of off to the side, all by themselves. 🤪 I work on multiple screens, so the tools open up on a totally different screen and it’s obnoxious.
Thanks for the videos! (One suggestion: if, possible... maybe add a little graphic to the video around the 15:00 mark reminding people to hold down SHIFT while unselecting parts of the model?)
Hi Dan - unfortunately I can't really go in and change the videos, but it's a good point that I should have mentioned. Thanks for the feedback!
@@Thesketchupessentials - i think it would be considered a "new" video and all views and comments would be lost? I might be wrong?
my god thank you so much i was struggling so much!
Great tutorial for learning and getting the hang of a few of the main tools. I do wish I knew the Mac short cuts. I'll have to find a cheat sheet.
Much appreciated! I have a much better understanding of the basic elements. I am very 'fluent' in Visio as I have used it in my past career. Sketch up seems very similar and by the same token very different. Your teaching style very much appeals to my learning. In dabbling with sketch up previously, I was frustrated with the tools and got caught up in trying to use the help and hunting and pecking. Your channel is exactly what I was searching for. I'm currently disabled and on Disability so I cannot support your channel as yet, but I will share and like and let the ads play at least. Thank you.
Thanks very much Peter - I really appreciate it! Glad you're finding the channel helpful!
Thank you Justin! I am learning fast :D
Awesome! :)
i'm in love with this channel, I can follow your tutorials so easily, thank you
For MAC users you will need to select the connected edges individually using the shift key and then use the move tool. To use the copy function for the move tool, you will need to click on Option key instead of Ctrl. Hope this helps someone who gets stuck in this step like I did :)
Thanks for this - as a lifelong PC user, I kind of forget to offer up the Mac options sometimes...
Also, to unselect itens we have to use Shift Control.
THANK YOU!! I was losing m mind!
Easy to follow, I'm 66 yrs old and enjoying the easy and concise lessons. Thanks for offering your time and expertise, it is greatly appreciated!

I am pressing the arrow up key to drawing a rectangle to for the chimney but it is not locking to the blue axis. please advise.(I am using a laptop).
When I have me rectangle tool selected the arrow keys do nothing at all. No ability to lock onto axis. Any idea how to fix this? Your videos are very helpful. Likes on all of them!
He did. Basically, all your Drum kit/percussion or whatever u want to call was ALL RED. So if you have a drum kit - KICK, SNARE, Nice tutorial

Thank you so much for this video! it's really helping me
There´s ALWAYS a coulple of pl who press the Dislike Button doesnt metter if the Video is good or not...
excuse me sir in the video you were working in feet and suddenly you started working in inches is it possible to change units mid work or are you just randomly sayingit also when i typed in 12 inches it was way bigger than what was being shown in the video so are you telling us the correct measurents or is there some technical error on my half??
Plese Sir.
My up key does not work to make chimney.
How can I do this?
Let me know.
it's super disappointing, and I feel like I've almost lied by keeping tNice tutorials comnt up and letting others see it, but I'm not going to delete it
Hello, did you do this with sketch up pro ?
How can I set the same working space ?
Thanks
Can someone please explain how to unselect the trim lines when you try to move the base of the house up? I did not understand that last part. When I try to unselect the door trim lines, it unselects the whole perimeter, and I cannot move the base at all.
Why does my rectangle tool do not responde to the inference lock key? I use Sketchup 2016
followed your this successfully till I got to materials
my materials are not to scale am getting 2 and a half bricks across the entire face
please show how materials get pasted on object in proper scale if through any script please explain how to use it.
you gotta tune the instrunt, by right clicking on it in the channel rack
Thank you and I am so much like the way you do just keep sir & help others like me as a beginner
What an awesome video! I want to ask, how to deselect the door trim line from all connected lines (at the bottom of the house)? I still don't get it. Thanks.
I couldnt' figure that out either
Nice job. Concise and you do a great job explaining your actions in a way that I can follow.
Why is it important to reverse the faces? Why is there a different between front and back faces?
Wow, this is an absolutely top-notch video. I used to use this program a lot back in high school but it's been a while and I had the sudden urge to start using it again, and your video is the perfect teaching tool to inspire that!

Lovely amazing professional and an incredible drawing EVER👍👍
Look forward to see more
I just saw your video and already subscribed 😊
My rectangle tool does not respond to the arrow keys, what supposed to be the problem?
I M EASY LAERNING....THANAQ BROO
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Coming from almost 6 years using Modo, and now have a couple of good archivs projects. Great video, compact and useful, you make wanna consider sketchup as working tool, thanks.
Cool - glad you found it helpful! :)
You teach really well.Thank you:-)
Thanks very much!
how do you change the dimesons whilst in the rectangle creating tool
wooow this was so interesting and easy to learn from, thanks for the tutorials
I love the house you made, it is very awsome. I want more of those videoes
what version youre explaning on plz
Excellent again. I have one problem though. I am using Sketchup Make 2017 as well ...but there is no tray and nothing that indicates how to show it. Have I done something wrong or is this not available inn the free version? Thanks ...just subbed.
Great Tutorials really easy to follow along for beginners. b Thanks for taking the time to put quality info on the world wide web
Glad you liked them!
Your first video was using the free version, then the second is using Pro (?) version. I'm using these to teach (facilitate) a drawing class. I'm hoping you stick to the basic tools.
This video is from 2017 - the free version wasn't even a thing then. You can follow the actual progression of the series you were on by visiting this link - ua-cam.com/play/PLEQT0qjXe6zjjv3uiHZ5G8Yj37gM8smNU.html .
Regarding materials, could you prepare a tutorial on how to develop a bill of quantities (BOQ)? Say, an MS Excel list of what materials are used, how much/many of them are used. THIS is because based on such a bill, the unit prices of each material can be done after inquiry in specific market. NO contract can be concluded without BOQ, you know.
BOQ is the key leading SketchUp to actual engineering projects.
Slowly getting better, I have a house just need to add the materials. Thank you.
very good and helpful and quick to use easy start especially for beginners
Awesome - glad you found it helpful!
I love And I sucribed.Im learning fast:)
Hi Justin .. 🤭well, yes, I am 3 yrs behind but your tutorial is fantastic - yes, the Flow of the tutorial is fine.
Awesome, thank you!
Hey Justin--what's the best way to make your mind 'think in sketchup steps'. Like, if I have a design in my head, there must be a better way than just trying to model each piece of plywood and then putting it together. How do you build efficiency? Sorry if that doesn't make sense.
Coming from part 1 and 'free' now we seem to be in a different app. I don't have all those menu/icon items. You didn't have those in part 1. What's the deal?
You jumped series - this is a much older series from before SketchUp moved their free version online - you want this playlist - ua-cam.com/video/I_bJPNnO3HQ/v-deo.html
Really helpful. Started sketchup today and I find your videos quite informative without being too much. Thank you
the dimension thing isnt working
pls help
Hi...its been useful...but the materials are not being availale in my sketchup....can you please help me with that
Like...at all?
Why doesn't the house shape show up in the Outliner? There's no shape you can click on from the outliner as opposed to using Autodesk Maya. Is there a way to get it to show up in there?
Any groups you create will show up in the outliner. If you don't group anything, you won't see anything in the outliner
AMAZING!! Thank you so much! I've tried a few different video courses and just haven't been able to get it until I started yours. Thank you again!
Your better than the guy in '="SketchUp School" I'm glad I found someone who teaches and knows he is not a comic. Good Going!!!!!
What toolbars are you using? And how do you turn them on? After installing Sketchup I do not see any of the toolbars you have showing.
How can I unselect? Everything else was good.
I have the same question!
just figured out on a Mac, it's shift+command
Good job, extremely helpful.
Much appreciated.
Glad it helped!
Oh man, when making the wainscoting, I don't see how to deselect the lines of the trim around the door nor the face without the lines around the entire face deselecting, too. I got the wainscoting done, though... just not how you did it.
Recently attended a class where I paid some architect $480 and walked away clear as muddy water about SketchUp. So relieved to happen upon this channel.
This was the best sketchup lesson I've seen. Been a newb to sketchup for so long because I never learned the basics. Great job, thank you!
Thanks - really glad you liked it :)
hellow thank you bro ... everything you teach us is correct i made my own house aha ahah ha
Lol - glad you liked it!
I cant get the r key with up key to work.
Great beginner tutorial! One thing I did notice was that you didn't explain how you hollowed out the chimney. Overall, a great video!
how to undo material applied.
Super helpful, thanks!
This was the best as a new person, I followed accordingly only to find that SketchUp is not that complicated. Thanks very much
this helped me out so much since ive never used this software before. love you videos. new subscriber here.
thank's i learn the basic of sketchup.will follow the pther videos
Thank you so much! I was struggling with SketchUp until I found your videos.
Thank you, really helpful as I teach myself interior design!
Awesome - thanks Helen - glad you found it helpful!
Creating chimney on the house is not working, as I keep pressing the up key but nothing happens.
Thanks for the awesome content. Very helpful.
Thanks for creating this video! Your explanation was very relatable and easy to follow.
I appreciate it man.. but I got problem creating chimney
This is not nearly enough information for me to help...
Awesome video. Thank you so much. You are my new hero
Glad it helped!
TheSketchUpEssentials it helped loads! I worked through another 3 videos today 🙂 thank you
How did you heal the face of the extruded roof section before extending it?
Nice workflow and tutorial. Hadn't learned the memory feature of the tools yet....PRICELESS! Love those golden nuggets. Keep up the great work Justin.
can someone tell me which one the the "up key"?
I m using a Mac
thanks for tutorial
👍
This was amazing. THANK YOU!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Justin, Great starting point, very useful
Glad you think so!
Love it!!! I'm totally new to Sketch up! I'm a Solidworks girl, but want to design house remodels with CAD at a beginner level...
Awesome! :)
Thanks so much, I appreciate all of your tips and feel very comfortable with your tutorials. Awesome job!!
So WHICH ONE WOULD I ORDER TO DO WHAT YOUR DOING IN THIS VIDEO?
quite helpful! keep it up
Very well done, Justin. I know this is an "old" video but as I'm just getting started (and using SketchUp Make 2017) it was very helpful. I look forward to watching (and doing!) more video tutorials.
