Yes, not very light, I agree - but on the other hand, the colour is so warm and deep I'd hardly miss the light. Wonderful present for someone who loves garnets!
Nothing wrong with that Cliff its stunning, i love to cut garnet always suprised at the final color some red some purple some almost black but ever beautiful.
Thanks for sharing. I've been giving it a go. Our team has mehenge that are new. Also, new grossular-andradite, pyrope-almandine, orange, clear, no dematoid yet. Many of them have what appears to be gold or mica inside. GIA certified. We will introduce them on this page now, and in AZ next week!
Wow..I see what you mean...it looked like it wasn't going to be that dark but when finished it darkened greatly! How frustrating for you! Still a beautiful job !!!
Very nicely done, Cliff. That design is interesting to me because I have a lot of rough that is far too shallow. When I downloaded the design, I was amused that Jeff called it a "Money Cut" because it cut quickly... Just as you mentioned in the video. Thanks much for showing your work. I'll be referring to it when I cut the design.
I love the muted, dark red flashes! I'm a but of a dark person sometimes though. You might want to watch your step when she wears this, and you might just be in for a treat! 😉
@@VintageTimeGems They might not be easy to cut, but Garnet looks classy on a woman of any age. They are a keeper of a gem for a keeper Lady. You made a beautiful present for your Wife. The setting is also perfect.
Talking dark stones, I had, in late 1960s, three orders for " black" smokey quartz faceted stones, due also HAD to be done freehand! These were for 'eastern european' work mates of my father. They actually devalue the stone if ultra precise machine perfect. It seems the men like a large black hunck of polished stone as a ring. Apparently they were most satisfied, just enough manual imperfection yet very close to machine perfect. I mainly did various cabochonp stones as I never acquired a faciting system. Sent hundreds of polished opals to relatives in Europe, some very surprised by valuations by jewelers. I must have given gifts of many tens of thousand value. One large opal got a buy offer of around $7000 when an aunt attended the shop to have an old pocket watch repaired. The shop owner noted the large opal pendant. Sadly a cheap fitting, my aunt almost fainted, but chose not to sell it, but did get it insured, never having realised its value till then. Word spread through the family and others got valuations done. One cousin on a Australia holiday got to try opal polishing in my setup, and ended up buying a quantity of rough here before returning home where he setup polishing in the basement of his appartment block. I sent several parcrls with new opal bits, but recently prices of even lower grade are beyond hobby level and he has back health issues (not polishing related, old work issues) I could send some of my supply but...... I have not done much polishing since 1980s, but stiĺl have opal, sapphire, zircon, garnet, aquamarine, amethyst, citrine, smokey through to clear quartz all of own digging and various other materials , some purchased even about 5 carats of diamond. Now being retired have much temptation to clear access to my polishing corner in the garage and possibly even get a faceting rig. Sadly too many other hobbies also grab my time. Your cutting videos reinforce my temptations. Keep up the impressive work and very good dedication to perfection.
Sweet man, I will be practicing this one. I am new but this looks really nice. I like it because it does not have a bunch of cuts to do and it is a nice looking piece..
Lovely stone Cliff, I am quite sure she'll love it. I think garnets are a fantastic gem, but a shame the affordable ones are usually poor quality. All the same I don't think its quite fair to knock the garnet on the basis of working with dark and included stones. I've had great results cutting these types of shallow designs on stones that are just bit more open and clean. They have nice dispersion and luster, and colors to boot.
Thank you Cliff for another wonderful step by step video. I also liked the final reveal of the classy setting and garnet against the background of rough rock - great contrast. Merry Christmas and here is hoping 2021 will be so much better than 2020, I don't think anything could be worse.
Absolutely astonishing to look at! I love garnets myself because of the deep dark red and the garnet you have there is amazing. I was given a garnet larger than my thumb and am looking to find someone to cut two gems from it.
Your talent is very evident Cliff. You've brought forth the most sparkle possible from a gem so dark and moody. How do you feel a cushion cut checkerboard would turn out for that garnet?
so what you are saying is the cool factor is worth it? i mean i would be in awe of an ashtray on a motor bike, whilst parked anyway. seems very dignified imho
Truly amazing work !!!😍. I would love to learn how to facet stones. Mr Cliff do you have any suggestions for a faceting machine for beginners or a beginners book to study ?
I love all of your videos Cliff but I am curious why you wouldn't have chosen a Lighter background (eg: White) for the Final Reveal ? It doesn't make sense to me that an already dark stone would be presented on a background with no contrast. Is it equally dark on a lighter background ? Thanks in Advance. PS> In case we don't hear from you before Christmas, best wishes to you and your family and friends and have a happy and prosperous new year. I can't wait to see what you cut next.
Might be a stupid question... Is it possible to CNC or automate the cut? Maybe to rough 90% of the cut and finish by hand to a perfect facette fit? I understand that you do this as a true passion... Your work is amazing. Alex from Montréal, Canada
Will the 600 / 800 polish leave an uneven surface on a copper disc or is it a case of not working one area too much. Excellent video, as a beginner I found it easy to follow.
hi sir, i am uninformed on ths topic but would like to ask if dark garnet is worth finding and collecting? i live in an area with creek beds literally full of garnet that is so dark you dont know its raw garnet till you shine light thru it. i have in the limited research i did come to the understanding dark garnet is not worth cutting. can you elaborate? is this garnet i have locally of no use other than my own projects should i pursue gemcutting in any capacity for my own items and artistic purposes?on a related note if the large deposits of "worthless" garnet are so obvious near me is it likely to find clearer more valuable garnet amongst the darker garnet? my final question is would a 7" makita gringer say mounted and a dremel 4000 series be enough to at least get an "ancient" looking facet on a stone? not looking to sell or profit but curious if its worth my time to polish and facet these garnet with the tools i have that are not for gem cutting
Hello Cliff, i have a bunch of small garnet that i would very much like to cut on this design, how would i go about getting it or purchasing it , the design is awesome.
Yeh, great job. But you were right. It’s to dark. Not much can be seen through. By the way could you please suggest a Australian Faceting machine for buying. May be the companies official website or something like that.
WOW! Stunning! Wish I could apprentice with someone as knowledgeable as you! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Juanita.
Yes, I can see the beautiful light play that you were speaking of as necessary to bring out the beauty of such a dark rich gem!!
Yes, not very light, I agree - but on the other hand, the colour is so warm and deep I'd hardly miss the light. Wonderful present for someone who loves garnets!
Thanks Kathy.
Love that garnet with the wine red flashes in it. Was a lovely design for the pendant. Thank you Cliff
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey Cliff. Garnet was my late mother's birthstone. You did a wonderful job with this one; that deep blood red is a stunner!
Thanks imari....My wife is a huge fan of garnet even this darker variety. It's a popular color, but I prefer lighter gems.
The color reminds me of SkyWing Dragons, nvm the WoF reference.
Nothing wrong with that Cliff its stunning, i love to cut garnet always suprised at the final color some red some purple some almost black but ever beautiful.
Thanks.
I know you think it is too dark but this stone has brilliant flashes of fire due to your choice of cut and setting. I'm sure your wife will love it!
Thanks...It has some nice flashes in it. My wife likes dark gems.
The setting is gorgeous! Love your humor!
Thanks Beth
I have a better understanding as to the high price of cut gems. Thank you. Alot of patience and knowledge.

that cut bring in some light to a dark stone
Yes it brings in light from the sides of the crown. I'm not a fan of Pyrope Garnet. Cheers
Looks great even though dark, in fact depending on setting and where/when worn the dark can be an enhancer.
Wow..I see what you mean...it looked like it wasn't going to be that dark but when finished it darkened greatly! How frustrating for you! Still a beautiful job !!!
I love garnet! I’ve got a beautiful 12 ct umbalite ready for the chopping block. I’ve got a nice bubblegum pink mahenge too. Great job mate, cut well!
Oh wow! Sounds like you'll be cutting some nice gems. Cheers Cliff

Hi John, this a Money Cut. Dead easy to facet and fast...Well worth it...Cheers Cliff

Buy one that is made in your country...
Hi cliff I have the bekely blue color change garnet from Madagascar
To be honest id rather have a deep red garnet then a pinkish ruby.

Thanks Jeff...I think the gem is too dark. So typical of Pyrope.
What if there was a light built into the dop stick? Would that help with darker gems?
Great video :) What is this software you are using to view the pattern?
How do you get the superglue off the stone after faceting?
Hi Cliff, where can i get copies of some of your designs, like this one.
Sir, what is the name of this machine? What is the price of this machine? Please tell me.
