Verry good test. Tesla did pretty well BMW M2, Renault Megane RS Trophy and then Lotuses are the last sportscars that you really feel when you are driving and they remind you that power is not everything because steering, suspension and stiffness of the chasis is what matters on the track.
Tesla should be proud. The Model 3 is impressively quick, electric is the future. But also unsurprisingly when it comes to track it struggled in handling around corners. And the RS3 suffered from the well known Audi understeer, more than the Model 3. The M2 is the clear victor in this comparison, and impressively it was the manual version which isn't the fastest from BMW. hats off to them
I think Tesla didn't want to make a car to be good on a track like BMW, but to be very good for evryday driving with some sort of extreme power and I think they did it really good and I can't wait to see Tesla roadster
Many said that the suspension is too soft on the Tesla, but that's just because people complained in earlier cars. Tesla already has a in-house dynamic suspension on the Model X/S. I guess they will soon implement it in the Model 3 Performance. But for a n00b company in the car world these are impressive results. I think the M2 would win more easily in a longer track.
@@ReximPL the Model 3 Performance was made with full performance in mind. Musk even targeted BMW M3 when hyping its performance around a track. Tesla definitely made the car to be capable on track just like bmw. It did well tho I agree.
You can thank Randy pobst for the model 3. It didn't used to be that good until mt tested it and he said he could make it better if they let him. So Tesla called him.
@@thoos192that's not true at all. Now tesla model3 performance is faster than Ferrari 458 Italia on some track with track mode v2 which Randy Post was in charge of test driving.
@@RYO12mwos So? Who cares how fast it is, still a shitty car. Bad range, drops roof on highway, panel gaps like the gran canyon, takes forever to charge, paint is bad, 40% less range in cold weather, almost no chargers (at least not in Europe), service is horrible, extremely expensive, battery degenerates over time, sterile interior, design is horrible, front looks like a dead fish. So it might be fast, but it is utterly bad on almost every single other point
@@thoos192 That's far from the truth LOL you don't care all of that if your daily is faster than Ferrari 458 on the track and it only costs you less than 60K. What you saying totally pointless. It still ride nicely for that price, offers tons of strage perfect for daily and it will be fully charged while you doing grocery shopping. Range is at least 450km and you can find so many chargers while the trip ( I live in Japan) and you never lose 40% of lange in even in winter unless you live in Antarctic. I can see why it's selling so we'll.
Holy that Tesla is fast! Amazing how it was so close around the track compared to an M2 with the performance package. And those Audis still are the understeer kings?
The acceleration makes up for it in the Tesla. It also has decent grip. End of the day, it's still not a good car for the track as the handling isn't good. Handling is more than just outright grip.
Agreed. MT's paid subscription video service smacks of corporate greed. I get it, that it's not cheap for them to produce their admittedly excellent content, but I really miss Engine Masters, Roadkill, and H2H. I'm not going to pay for it, though!
Doug Robinson have you ever looked into how much you are paid for views on UA-cam? And then considered the production team required for MT quality videos? Locations? Tracks? Etc? Unless you are a small team, making efficient videos (like Doug Demuro or Matt Farah,) it's unsubstainable. Even crews like Everyday Driver have left UA-cam for television. It's not a coincidence that almost every famous automotive UA-camr has eventually left to focus on other projects or go work for a corporation.
Literally screamed when the M2 won. The suspense was killing me. Definitely my favourite car of the three and my favourite car channel on UA-cam. Keep it up guys!

I chose the RS3 for its AWD as I enjoy winter driving with winter tires. My summer car is a 2020 Porsche Spyder which is due for delivery this August. Keep up the great work men.
It would've been better to compare these two 4door AWD cars to another BMW 4door AWD car. The M2 benefits so much more from lack of weight. That should be a testament to the Tesla Model 3 and the Audi. Great video though. You guys do an awesome job. I look forward to more of your videos.
Great video. It would help to share the Tesla’s state of charge as it is fastest at/close to a full charge. If you spent the day gunning it and didn’t recharge before the hot laps, you may have actually missed out on a significant amount of power. Regardless, well done. Subbed.

If you want to correct people, at least get your facts right. Model 3 has one permanent magnet SRM (rear) and one AC induction motor (front). But yeah, they could have given at least a little detail when they do the same with the other two. But i guess for them EV tech is something they are not familiar with and thus have hardly any knowledge about.
streetcred agreed. However the cost of ownership on the audi and bmw is very high with prem fuel and maintenance. Not just slightly cheaper but drastically cheaper. I think if anyone is only interested in track performance than the BMW would be the car to buy. For now.
Noise Control for the initial price it certainly is. Didn’t realize how good it was, just thought it was a slight boost in performance with some badges. I went electric and not looking back, once you experience the instant torque and low cost of maintenance and operating costs. Hard to go back to gas.
@@therealcdnuser I couldn't agree more about electric. I'm converted going forward, even with my built engine A3... just that instant power is contagious. And the cost of ownership, $280 for a flat tire on the Tesla, $3000+ for the Audi normal maintenance.
Man, this is soooo good to see how u enjoy the actual driving and tackling at the corners and fighting against the car for control. Very cool stuff here, many thanks. The M2 Competition is definitely fun to drive just by looking at how excited u were in the driver seat!
The Tesla Performance is probably one of the best all around daily driven cars at the moment but the M2 Comp would be more fun on the track. Both are very well engineered. Great job on the track test!
You guys are the best motoring journalists because of your ebullience and the interplay between the two. Well done guys. Wade Goodwin, The FAIR Digest, South Africa
It would still understeer. I've had 2 Audis and they are great in a straight line but both were horrible in the corners. The noise that came from the front tyres when cornering fast was horrendous. They are good daily drivers but neither of them put a smile on my face.
I own the 2019 RS3, but you really gotta learn how to drift it. But if you know how, boy you CAN drift it. Enter the corner pretty fast, then give the brakes a very short but hard slap while you turn in the steering wheel very fast (like a very exaggerated flick) and then you give full throttle as long as you want to slide, if you want to end the fun just release the throttle a bit and the car instantly straightens out. They modified the Haldex system since the 2018 model so it actually allows nice AWD drifts and powerslides.
The 1le literally has 660 hp. Over 200 more than the M2, which surely lost some tenths if not a second cause of the manual. Why don't you put up the camaro against a 991.2 gt3? It still has 160 hp more but will lose badly against a car which is actually meant to get tracked
TalonTSI95 lots of M cars see the track. By % I’d guess out of total production Porsche, M cars, and miatas see the most track time in the life of a car. I’d bet most M cars touch the track at some point in their life. Basically every e36 has lol.

“You get one car girl and her name will be Damian.”... thanks 👌💅🏼
Finally somebody drives cars on a track as oppose to so called reviewers driving them straight line in an allegedly competition....
You guys are getting better and better every episode. So much love and respect for doing what you do - and proud you're also from Ontario!! :)
Nice job guys, and thank you for including the list of your tested car lap times at the end!
Tesla should be proud. The Model 3 is impressively quick, electric is the future. But also unsurprisingly when it comes to track it struggled in handling around corners. And the RS3 suffered from the well known Audi understeer, more than the Model 3. The M2 is the clear victor in this comparison, and impressively it was the manual version which isn't the fastest from BMW. hats off to them
And this is the rs3. It even worse in lesser models. I found as soon as you really start pushing an Audi, they kind of give up.
@@kriss2005 the Audi would win too in a race. the Tesla cant keep up highspeed for long because of cooling problems.
@@ReximPL the Model 3 Performance was made with full performance in mind. Musk even targeted BMW M3 when hyping its performance around a track. Tesla definitely made the car to be capable on track just like bmw. It did well tho I agree.
We all appreciate Your effort to bring such an amazing content. You are really pros. Thank You.
As a recent 2020 M2C buyer, this is the video that finally made me a subscriber. I was in suspense waiting for those lap times :)
Great content, excellent production, FUN to watch!
Way better than any top gear or other show, because it feels genuine.
Keep it rolling!
You can thank Randy pobst for the model 3. It didn't used to be that good until mt tested it and he said he could make it better if they let him. So Tesla called him.
Thank him, for what? Tesla is a shitty car for environmentalists who have no perception of what a good car is.
@@RYO12mwos the Ferrari 458 is still a way better track car
And those Audis still are the understeer kings?
lostchildren well the m2 did have less hp but the tesla is still quite fast
@@blackfire_x2964 well the m2 is lighter? You can make these kinds of excuses all day long, this is a game of tradeoffs.
It's only fast in a straight line, around corners it's garbage. The handing on a Tesla is worse than in a base model 2 series.
bundu bashing dude i like tesla’s dont get me wrong
The acceleration makes up for it in the Tesla. It also has decent grip. End of the day, it's still not a good car for the track as the handling isn't good.
Handling is more than just outright grip.
You guys are becoming the new MotorTrend on YT... love this Head-to-Head-to-Head Haha
It's not a coincidence that almost every famous automotive UA-camr has eventually left to focus on other projects or go work for a corporation.
throttle house vids are the only ones I can stand to watch all the way through!

Man that spoiler killed me 🤣
A win is a win but that's mighty close. The TM3 deserves so much more credit than it gets.

Seriously shocked that you two create such a quality viewing experience alone. Well done, love the channel.
All those 4WD super high tech double clutch state of the Art cars, but in the end is the old school light weight RWD, manual car that wins the day. This makes me happy.
And congratulations guys, your 2 man budget show kicks the ass of 95% of UA-cam’s car channel portfolio. Keep going you will double your subscriber count in no time
Wins what? Wins at lap times on a perfect conditions track run? Surely.
Thanks Jonny!
Love these guys. They redeemed themselves in my book after that M2C vs Tesla video which was brutal.
Def my fav channel
Great review. BWM leveraging decades of chassis refinement and experience. You have to give kudos to Tesla - only the 3rd car they've ever designed themselves and already a winner.
First time I've seen a video from you guys or heard of you, but nicely done, great quality editing and presentation. Will have a look through your past videos.
I chose the RS3 for its AWD as I enjoy winter driving with winter tires. My summer car is a 2020 Porsche Spyder which is due for delivery this August. Keep up the great work men.
This is easily the best car review show on any platform
WOW, Finally the track test we were promised... I have resubscribed and thanks a lot, tesla track tests videos are very very rare.
I am addicted to these videos. Seriously... good work
Fantastic comparison. Dispelling the myths that the model 3 can’t track. Well done guys.
it cant track on large tracks with long straights. it just doesn't have the top speed and overheats too easily. still a nice car
you must have missed everything Thomas said.
M2 is RWD, Manual, and 70hp down on the Tesla and still won , shows to show what suspension tuning and weight can do for a car......
I'm actually surprised you guys do this yourselves, it's actually incredible you can do this at such a high quality just the 2 of you
You are doing a better job than a lot of big teams. Keep going 🙌🏼 I'm a inline-6 guy to 😅
I appreciate your guys' hard work bringing out content we all want and need as an audience... electric cars can be fun, who knew
I'm a fan. You guys are THE NEW top gear. Great content AGAIN. 🤘🏾
That last shot of the three cars is gorgeous!
It would've been better to compare these two 4door AWD cars to another BMW 4door AWD car. The M2 benefits so much more from lack of weight. That should be a testament to the Tesla Model 3 and the Audi. Great video though. You guys do an awesome job. I look forward to more of your videos.
Audi: lets put a bandage on the Understeer problem.
Car Enthusiast: We’re not dumb
That m2 looks and sounds awesome, what a car 👍👍
Great video. It would help to share the Tesla’s state of charge as it is fastest at/close to a full charge. If you spent the day gunning it and didn’t recharge before the hot laps, you may have actually missed out on a significant amount of power.
Regardless, well done. Subbed.
Ariff N yes, I saw it was 65% before hit laps
Hot laps
At 7:36 it clearly states 325km
I'm a fullon Tesla fan boy, and I really like this video. You guys are clearly well informed, very skilled and you did everything fairly and without any bias. Even with your limited budget (which is not noticable at all) you provided a far better and fairer head to head than whatcar, top gear, any of those folks. Bravo.

Don't forget the Model 3 is powered by 2 Permanent Magnet Alternating Current motors, if your gonna be descriptive with the other two powertrains.
And a motor controller to fool the motor that it’s acheiving ac current, when it’s actually dc current.
Love the BMW but I would take the Tesla for the cheap cost of ownership.
Have you tried the Mountain Pass suspension for the model 3? Game changer!
its like putting NTR / AST / Ohlins / KW on the M2C also game changer
streetcred agreed.

Great work boys, as usual. BMW still the drivers choice.
Everyone hates you bmw drivers
I feel like a tuned RS3, with a stiffer rear anti roll bar, and pilot sport 4s's or cup 2's, would really make it a much more capable car.
It would still understeer. I've had 2 Audis and they are great in a straight line but both were horrible in the corners. The noise that came from the front tyres when cornering fast was horrendous. They are good daily drivers but neither of them put a smile on my face.
Shame the Model 3 didn't have the carbon fibre spoiler maybe it would made a difference!
To make it even uglier...good one

Audi RS3 with an ECU & TCU tune is my favorite
I own the 2019 RS3, but you really gotta learn how to drift it. But if you know how, boy you CAN drift it.
Enter the corner pretty fast, then give the brakes a very short but hard slap while you turn in the steering wheel very fast (like a very exaggerated flick) and then you give full throttle as long as you want to slide, if you want to end the fun just release the throttle a bit and the car instantly straightens out.
They modified the Haldex system since the 2018 model so it actually allows nice AWD drifts and powerslides.
RS3 is a beast from launch but the M2 turns in so much better.
Finally, someone knows how to drive the RS3. These idiots need to learn how to drive one. Specially the first guy driving it..facepalm
On the money, fellow Rs3 owner here.
Add a tune to the RS3, bye bye Tesla lol.
Kristopher Keller and only for 1g
Crazy to see how much faster new Camaros and mustangs are!
Yea and almost 50% cheaper. American v8s have come a long way
It is, but still not that fun and refined.
The 1le literally has 660 hp. Over 200 more than the M2, which surely lost some tenths if not a second cause of the manual.
Why don't you put up the camaro against a 991.2 gt3? It still has 160 hp more but will lose badly against a car which is actually meant to get tracked
User 1888 That was an SS 1LE. It has 455hp, so only 50 more than the M2 comp.
User 1888 Also that 911 is more than double the price of the ZL1 1LE, and almost quadruple the price of the SS 1LE .
Awesome review!!! I must admit that the results were both surprising, but also to be expected.
One of the best car chanels!!!
Game of trade-offs aside, how many people buying any of these cars will ever take them to the track? 15%? Less?
TalonTSI95 lots of M cars see the track. By % I’d guess out of total production Porsche, M cars, and miatas see the most track time in the life of a car. I’d bet most M cars touch the track at some point in their life. Basically every e36 has lol.
People forget that with just a stage 1 tune on the rs3, your gonna be almost in p100d territory. With stage 2 and couple of bolt ons you can runs 9’s in 1/4 mile.
You're not going to reliably run 9's, and the few times you do it's going to be like 9.8-9.9.
Jacob Truelove That doesn't change the fact that the RS3 chassis is nose heavy garbage.

In defense of the RS3.... virtually nobody, even track warriors, are wrecking their rear tires doing long power slides. The RS3 probably balances better with a simple rear sway bar upgrade, as most Audi/VWs do.
Agreed, I did that to my Golf R and made a very nice improvement to the understeer issue.
The 2.5 in the rs3 is the new German 2JZ of the tuner world. Just a tune puts this car in the 10s and it can run 9s on stock turbo. The car is insane.
