Not that long ago, I would have called myself a petrol head but after selling my M2 and Ducati, then buying a Model 3 LR Dual Motor with Acceleration Boost, I can say I have no regrets. I love the performance and I've made some mods to personalise it. Owned a number of EVs over the last 6 years but the Model 3 was the car that made performance in an EV accessible. As a petrolhead, I was on the fence when considering an EV but since I took delivery of my Model 3 Performance in November 2021, I've never looked back. People ask if I miss anything from my previous cars and I honestly don't. My M3P is quicker point to point, has more space, is more comfortable and is cheaper to run. I don't even miss the sound of a fruity exhaust either. There's something quite serene about making serious progress without a lot of noise. Helps making you fly under the radar as well!
I'm in the same boat. With most cars, there is just lots of noise and very little movement. It just looks and sounds dumb.(not talking about supercars here.) The 3P just gains speed so effortlessly. I still have a softspot for ICE motorcycles, because their performance is so high. And its hard to mask the weight on a motorcycle.
You are a real positive force for the transition to electric cars Richard. I met you a couple of years back and you really sold me on Tesla. It's coming up to two years ownership soon of a Model 3, now with acceleration boost and I'm loving it.
Good video. It's funny seeing the legacy Autopilot graphics alongside the rest of the latest user interface. Here in the states, as an FSD Beta driver, I've become so used to the new visualization graphics that what you are seeing looks antiquated and old fashioned. I hope you get the new visualization soon in the UK!
For those who like to drive, I struggle to think of a better buy than the Model 3 Performance. It's super fun, beautiful (with the right spec), and incredible value. I've got both an RWD and M3P, and they're both amazing daily drivers in their own right. The RWD is as light as a feather, makes every turn pleasurable, and has fantastic efficiency. But the M3P is just unbelievable. It's like a supercar crossed with a go kart. It almost feels illegal to drive. In the Venn diagram of speed, fun, safety, beauty, and value, M3P is alone in the centre. The MYP comes close, but it's still a different league.
Fun is not a word I would use. Zero driver involvement. No sound. Inadequate side bolstering. Poor handling. Its really not a great performance car or particularly special. It's a good EV, reasonable car, poor performance car.
@@stuartbarker6668 - A performance car which does daily duties better than a Corolla, is cheaper to maintain and fuel than a Corolla. Tesla never said it was an all out performance car.
@@stuartbarker6668 its faster on the track than a BMW M3 of the same year. So handling is superb, traction is superb. Only downside, its heavier, so it will lose performance in the 3/4th lap where ICE copes better. Have you driven the M3P yourself Stuart?
It was this channel that confirmed my decision to buy a Tesla. Just a basic Rear Wheel Drive but 42,000 miles in just over a year and still delighted with it and I’ve done to Ferrybridge stop from West Sussex with no problem! As you say the vast majority would never drive for the best part of five hours and you can easily even in mine…
I just traded in my CLA for a 2019 model 3 performance. It's quicker, cheaper to run and a lot more comfortable as well. The cla was of course quicker to fill but also went about 400km if I wasn't too heavy on the pedal with its 50L gas tank so range is really a non issue. The longest trip I had with the model 3 yet was 280km and it used 74% in about 8 degrees Celsius and mostly highway speeds. I charged it to 93 ish before leaving so I had no anxiety at all, arriving with 19% left.
Richard, I have a 2018 performance with 230,000 km. 9% degradation. Nearly all supercharging. It is truly exactly what you said. It's a massive steal at 35k dollars. I'm nearly certain it's the greatest performance bargain ever.

As you know I was a big petrol head before and thought I would miss the roar of the V8 from numerous cars I previously had but in fact I don't. The silence of it all makes it an effortless pleasure and in August I am driving across Europe to Budapest which should be a great test in every aspect. Great video as per usual .........
I’ve had an 2019 M3P for a month now and it’s so easy to drive with one pedal and knowing you have that acceleration is very smug… no brake dust on the wheels and the sound system is outstanding… well happy
Great "slice of life" drive to show how EVs work in the real world. Agreed on roadtrips, I need to stop & have breaks myself, as much as the car does... so NO wasted time charging. Recently I drove 3hrs from 100%, stopped for quick bite to eat (take away, ate in car listening to music or watching videos), and... 18minutes quick bite later, car was MORE than done... 10%-70%. More than needed. Basically, a fill-up.. < $20USD... and on the way for another 150+ miles. re performance petrol-head driving: engine note/noise might be gone, but... the acceleration AND deceleration control, with one-pedal driving and the motor instant torque and regen braking, is just phenomenal. It's so fine and sensitive, it reacts almost to your subconscious... think pressure on pedal, not position... and steering too. It's like you are one with the car. Then, on downhills, especially curvy ones... wow! Regen braking is like low-gear stickshift, but infinite-speed/RPM... you just drive, and pressure on the pedal does what you want. You can focus on the road and the fun, not rowing all the gears and watching RPMs... though if you enjoy that physical hands-on part, well,.. that goes away... but the thrill, makes up for it. (and, the same applies to the cheapest RWD model, not just Performance!) As you said, all that performance and fun,.. in a daily driver too. Take the family, haul groceries, roadtrip, errands.. drive slow & steady & smooth, ... or rip it when the road opens up, and zoooom :) Tesla grin appears on your face. And (free) AutoPilot for roadtrips, taking care of the mundane lane-keeping and speed/separation... reduces driver fatigue so much, it's a huge benefit end of the day, much less tired, drained, stiff & sore. (Forced charging stop rest breaks help w/ that too.) I call it, relaxing exhilaration... or, is it exhilarating relaxation? :)
Like your videos. One of the things that EV channels doing road trips should do is not simply show how long it took to recharge but, to calm the nerves of the doubters, they should always mention how long they've been driving between charging stops. This way the viewers gets a sense on just how long it's been rather than depending on people having common sense. The truth is, most people don't have it despite what they think. Hearing "I'm been driving for driving for 3 hours and 10 minutes," or anything of the such, really puts it perspective for most people. Mentioning the miles driven doesn't seem to register in the minds of most. It definitely isn't as dramatic as the time spent driving.
Had my 23 plate RWD for 2 months now and can already say the best car I've ever owned. Efficiency is insane too I believe I have 60kWh LFP battery and I have done 200 miles using only 75% battery at motorway speeds! Easily see 250 miles out of it and the speed is still great at around mid 5 sec to 60 :)
After having done lots of research and speaking to friends and colleagues with EV’s Tesla EV’s are not comparable with other electric cars, Tesla has a very good network of chargers which is way ahead of every other option on the market, the only EV I would consider would be a Tesla 👏👍😀

Much like yourself Richard, I've had a whole range of ICE performance cars including an Exige and R35 GT-R...but the M3P has been the best daily I've ever owned! You're spot on with all your points about it, it really is a Swiss army knife. For example, last weekend I took it for a lovely coastal drive for some spirited fun, this weekend I've fitted the bikes on the roof for all 4 of us to go mountain biking! Can't wait for the new M3's under project highlander to arrive.....
Picked up my m3p end of 2022 after moving from a 981 cayman S and a 500bhp supercharged v8 jag xf-r and had to choose between the m3p, m2 comp, and nearly new rs3 and am very happy with my choice … the lack of sound does reduce the drama of the drive but the performance is undeniable and the cost savings are around £600 a month relative to the Porsche or jag or any of the other cars I was considering … performance car on a budget in my opinion …
I currently drive a BMW M2.... genuinely tempted by a Model 3 performance as my next car... never thought I would say that. They seem good value in the current car market where other cars seem overpriced. Keep up the content RSEV 👍
Ferrybridge is my usual stop from Newcastle to Reading. 250kw always reliable and quick pitstop. Dashboard change to black alcantara still looking amazing since the fitting last September at your garage! However the middle of dash dip in the trim still there, hope it hasn’t stuck in your head since pointing it out 😂 ongoing issue Tesla say as all the models they checked around that timeframe had it too… aka get used to it! Overall an absolutely incredible car and the performance is just never ending smiles.. range isn’t ever an issue and cost to run is so small!
I am in love with my Model 3 LR: 1,5 yrs, 41000km, and I did not miss my Mercedes one day. For my plenty fast and nippy enough. I still think the LR is the sweet spot
My dream car was a Nissan GTR. Still own 400hp z32TT which is alot of fun. But when I got my MYP I no longer want a GTR or modify my z32 for more power.
If anyone is in any doubt about electric cars then they need to watch your videos. I still get the same old comments about range, hydrogen cars will be the next big thing, the batteries dont last, yawn yawn yawn and I always direct them to watch your videos to get a realistic view on electric cars. Convinced me early on and haven't looked back. Keep up the great work.

Hi Richard @RSymons RSEV - great video as always. The only thing I would take issue with is Servicing costs on EVs. People (reviewwers/press) make this "throw-away statement" about them being so cheap to service, nothing needs doing, nothing ever goes wrong etc... but I haven't yet seen anyone do a video on real-world servicing costs. I think Teslas are the exeption, when you say they don't even have a srvuicing schedule, and you may never need to visit a dealership. I lease a Skoda Enyaq iV60 as a company car, and my service schedule it every 2 years. Mine has done 12,000 miles and it's due it's first service... noting has gone wrong (excep tthe software still locks-up now and again), brakes WILL last longer like you say etc... BUT they want £310! - I don't consider that cheaper than my previous petrol/deisel cars. I'd say that's pretty high. So, what are they doing for this mponey? - inspection, possible software update (if there is one this time, doubt it)... and BRAKE FLUID replacement. That is it! I have shopped around, and this is the SAME price as all Skoda dealerships - it's being set by Skoda. As it's a lease car, AND because Skoda are the ONLY place you can get the software updates, you don't really have a choice to shop local - they've GOT YOU! I wonder if VW group as whole have similar costs for ID3 and ID4?... what are other people's experiences of this?... I also note that BYD in Australia set an ANNUAL service schedule... so that won't be when it comes to the UK proper. I wonder what Hyundai and Kia are like for servicing interval/costs? I just think, the cheaper servicing may be an "illusion" we are being duped into, and it varies by manufacturer massively. It's really almost the ONLY way they can make any money, a smore and more manufacturers ove to selling Online... so they're actually just jacking up the prices of sevricing. I'm sure what you're saying about Teslas is totally correct, but how about doing a video on real-world servicing costs for other EV makes?
OK, i can pitch in here with some user experience also. On a 2021 M3 LR AWD: Positives: 1. Range at UK A-road speeds is enough for 4-5 hours of driving. Range at a steady 80-85mph (continental europe) is around 2-2.5 hrs driving. Long distance driving is very easy - i've done 3000km in 3 days with mine. 2. Fastest A-road car i've ever driven cos it will overtake everything with ease, so I can keep up very high average speeds on long journeys. 3. It is incredibly easy to drive. Just point it and go - traction and stability controls sort out everything, even on a sheet of ice. It's 400HP, but anyone can drive it safely. 4. It really is cheaper to run, but home charging is a critical component of this. Negatives: 1. It is not a B-road car. It is just too heavy and too wide. It is darty and nimble for 2 tonne car, but it is a 2 tonne car. 2. No gears, no revs, none of the extra challenge (and fun) of a manual gearbox. I would note that i have quite a few Tesla-specific negatives, but they don't really apply to EV's as a whole, whereas the above points all do. So when the time comes to change i quite likely won't get another Tesla, but i will get another EV.
Owned one of these bought back in September 2019. Amazing car. Moved on to Model Y Lr for small family which I love....but still miss that amazing performance.
Just for reference, I bought my Model S (P85+!) back in 2013 and I just replaced my front brakes for the first time a couple months ago. That's 150,000+ kms and 10 years on one set of front brakes. My rear brakes are still 80% good, so they will probably outlive me. I also still have all my original lights (headlights, taillights, interior lights), which seems incredible after all this time. I do drive it every day, so the car gets a lot of use. I also only had to replace one of my pop-out door handles (passenger rear). It always irks me when people claim that Tesla has bad quality. This car has been a stunning example of top quality engineering & assembly, considering how long it's lasting, and still feels brand new! No squeaks or rattles after all this time.
Just adding a comparison for my UK to Norway trip last week, over 4 days we did 2089km (1306 miles) at an average 169 Wh/km which according to my maths is 270 wh/mile, 3.7 miles/Kwh, only slightly down on yours and pretty good for what was nearly all long distance motorway/autobahn driving. Plus its a bigger/heavier car (Model S).
I've had many of the hot Japanese sports cars and none of them compare to my 2023 M3P. I do a 400 miles each way road trip every month and it's awesome, it's fit for purpose in every way. I put my phone on the wireless charger with Waze open too, it gives that extra info about events on the road.
Love me M3LR. Quick refined and super cheap to run and so easy on the occasional long run I do. Costing £30-£40pm to charge mine and only pay more for the superchargers on long trips. Range anxiety is not a thing in a Tesla. Makes so much sense in every way and love mine.
It would be interesting to see pence per mile compared to a similar performance ICE. Here's my 2p worth: £39 total cost 354 miles Works out at 11p per mile Comparable ICE BMW M5 CS (0-60 in 3 seconds, saloon car) 25mpg = 14.16 gallons = 64.36 litres Petrol cost 144.64p per litre x 64.36 = £93.09 Works out at 26.29p per mile
Richard you are right in every point that’s why I have one, then sold it and bought another , taking it to the alps in two weeks, after 12 months of Tesla ownership I’d hate to go back to fuel stations, this car has blistering performance and as we have the solar set up literally costs less to run all year than I was paying for car tax on my last diesel car, did I mention the performance Omg, what a car 😊
I love my 2019 Tesla Model 3 Long Range so much that I'm using it as my Driving School tuition car to teach learner drivers. No clutch. No Gears. No Gas. No Fuss. And if they're not asked to carry out an Emergency Stop on the Driving Test... No brakes either! Yep. Pass the entire driving test without using the brakes once! No more heartaches on hill starts, reticence on roundabouts or trepidation at T Junctions! Goodbye petrol & diesel.
I drive daily, ~350 miles per week, so having a car that cuts maintenance and general operating costs low is ideal. This seems to fit the bill and check my boxes…just hard to pull the trigger on such a large purchase
I’m on my seventh Tesla soon to get an eighth. All very different. M3P is a great all rounder but I feel it’s more of a 1/2 person car rather than a family cruiser. MSP will be the one but they don’t do it in RHD…yet!
Love my tesla model y Duel Motor. Do long trips a couple of times a week. For example this week did 269 in one day from 100% to 12% arriving home with no additional charging.

It's a very different experience in a non-Tesla, though, isn't it? Like having to plan primary and backup charging locations in advance and then the worry that there aren't any available chargers. That's why I sold my 2017 Ioniq and bought a Tesla.
The savings for company car drivers is immense, and can much more than 2-£300 as suggested, especially if you get taxed on free fuel. I went from paying around £700 per month on a diesel Audi, to around £350 for a BMW phev. I’ve ordered a Model Y performance which will save me a further £300 ish per month 😱
I was never a petrol head. Though I did love the odd car and several motorbikes that I've owned. The change to a BEV has been amongst the best decisions I've made. I don't miss my old SAAB 900 Turbo 16, though it was gorgeous, and I still have my beautiful Italian Red 2000 Honda VFR800FiY in the garage, but as the years pass I increasingly feel that I won't ever ride it again. My first ever car, an Austin Mini would be great as an electric. Maybe I could do that?
Across the pond 2018 M3P owner, former ICE-head. The M3P remains the best and easier car I’ve ever owned. No major service outside in the last 56k miles. I will say in full transparency - you really should get the brake fluid checked every two years even without using the brakes as much. Brake fluid collects water over time and you want the friction brakes to be there when you need them. Tesla still uses Dot3 instead of Dot4 which tends to last longer, but point is there’s still some minor maintenance. Also if something major DOES go wrong, it can be expensive and take a while for parts to get to servicing. Just full transparency from an owner, not a deal breaker in any respect though
Some thing I noticed straightaway about that older performance Tesla model three: it made. Did you change the sound of shifting from parking to drive. That feature it was just sent to the cars as an over the air update within the last few weeks. The car is better now than it was before. This has happened in dozens of ways for these vehicles.
@@RJC10101 I made the same switch a few months ago. Don’t really miss the 3P, although mine was 2020 version, so few more bits in the YP, like auto boot and wireless charging. The 3 was a bit more fun to drive, but the Y is more convenient and SUV like, so bigger more accessible boot and easier to get in and out of.
Came fron an audi rs5 2018 model , yeah it was cooler for other people to look at. but there is nothing more fun like the model 3 performance, i just love it!
The Tesla charging experience is so simple and reliable compared to the second rate other and slower charge infrastructure. Just be careful travelling to wales or east of the A1. And don’t attempt any long distance journey in a non Tesla without double planning safely stops and cursing at slow charging or having to queue. Telsa is the only long distance option right now.
Hi Richard really do fancy a M3 performance and have test drove one at Tesla Leeds a year ago but I dare not swap my 2019 Merc B200d just yet as it's a gorgeous car that's great on fuel economy & fuel prices are low too..one day but not just yet..👍
Good overview and video indeed. After fours years in those cars I agree with most of it. Two things though: - it's worth mentioning that a lot of M3P owners get issues with their brake disks when they use Regen braking too much. We've had a lot of Model 3's fail their MOT / technical inspection because of that. - You call the 2022 LG Performance a 79kWh car. The 2021 performance a 82kWh car, then the 2019 is a 78kWh car, not 75kWh. If you count in the battery buffer of -4,5% below 0% you should be consistent. 👍
What are the brake issues then? I’ve never had any. The batteries tend to be known as the 75, 82 and 79 so could be pedantic but that’s just the most common terms for them and this isn’t a video to delve into technicalities
@@RSEV The brakes get rusty and at some point the rust won't be removed just from braking. Parts of the disc will stay rusty, whatever you do. There are long threads in TMC and TFF about it. Only frequent and active use of the brakes prevents it. Also an issue with other Tesla's, but M3P are the most prone to this issue somehow. About the battery pack. Early model 3 from 2017/2018 in the US market had a 75kWh battery pack. When we first got our cars in Europe these packs were already replaced with 78kWh packs (77,8kWh actually). People on the US use the term 75kWh packs, but since we never got this older battery pack, it never applied to European cars. There are two Panasonic packs with 78 and 82 kWh net capacity and two LG packs with 75 and 79kWh here in Europe plus many more. Google "Akkuwiki" if you want to go into the nerdy details. I fully understand that this video was not meant for that.

Tempted to change to a Tesla, after watching this! (almost lol). TBF the mapping & software is the best in a Tesla. Most Electric cars have great acceleration compared to petrol cars!, more than happy taking our EV on long journeys too.

So thanks for the video and the ride along. I’ve been to the UK, and driving on your roads is absolutely scary, but I am glad to see that you’re driving a Tesla. LOL! So what I find interesting in watching a lot of videos about Tesla, and other car companies cars, and I thought about the fact that no one seem to care about how much it cost to drive from one place to another until Tesla came along. So I still have an ICE car that I barely drive anymore, I don’t even know why I still have it, however, I never calculated how much it cost to fuel up the car, and now that I have a Tesla, I sure as hell never think about how much it cost to charge up my car, because to me the value in owning a Tesla versus an ICE car is that I am doing my small part in supporting trying to save this planet, because we cannot continue driving, and using energy the way we’ve been using it, despite what these climate change deniers continue to say that they don’t believe in climate, change or global warming, that’s it’s all a hoax, it’s just made up and my question to anyone who is in the flat earth society‘s camp on this, is ask your self this question. What would happen if you woke up 50 or 100 years from now, and you realized that the scientist was wrong and the naysayers were right, but the world went to an all electric strategy in terms of powering our homes, businesses, and our motor vehicles, but the byproduct was that, even though we were wrong about the causes of global warming and climate change, our air was cleaner, we were using energy more efficiently, and energy was so inexpensive that it became something that we never even have to think about, because energy is ubiquitous in the universe, and so our kids were healthier, people in general were healthier, and because of the technology that’s in these vehicles, e.g. (FSD) full self driving/autonomous driving cars, as well as buses, trucks, trains, aircraft, etc. robots that do all the dangerous work that people used to do, now they no longer have to do, and by and large, people were living longer. They were healthier and they were happier, that they suffered far less anxiety, less frustration, less injury because of not having to engage in physical manual labor that people use to do, freeing up time to cultivate personal relationships, spending more time with their families, and taking care of each other, and living in harmony and peace, with time to pursue those intellectual activities that a lot of people don’t have time to pursue because they were always required to be at work doing some type of manual, physical labor related a job. So pursuing your dreams and living in harmony, with nature you would think should be something we all value, and should be something we would all be interested in preserving one would think. So wouldn’t that be worth it? I think so. Cheers 🥂
I'm off to Cornwall next month from Yorkshire, 360 miles. Will be my first real long trip in my M3L. Videos like these make me feel less anxious about using the public chargers. Not sure I have the balls to let it go down to 2% like Richard does though 😄
We recently did Derby to Cornwall. No issue at all other than the quick tour of John Lewis car park in Bristol trying to find the superchargers on the ground floor. Enjoy your trip!
Yeah cribs causeway chargers are awkward to find. I wouldn’t usually pick those if just running down M5. But yes the trip will be easy! 300 miles to Exeter services non-stop from N Yorkshire?? I’d have a go at that 😂
@@RSEV yes those were the ones, I couldn't remember the name. Annoyingly they're the 250kW ones in the area. Worst experience was the Woodhall chargers as for some reason the first one we tried didn't work properly and started at 25kWh and we walked off the fairly long distance to the services building. I checked in the app to find that charging had stopped and wouldn't restart so had to walk back and move the car. Then I got an email about being charged for overstay not charging.

Great video. I'm very interested in buying a Tesla Model 3 but Im a bit confused regarding charging. The general advice seems to be to not charge beyond 80% and not let the battery drop below 20%. I notice that you regularly charge into the 90s and run it down to below 5%. Does that damage the battery?
I have watched many youtube videos and I find the crucial point of time is often glossed over. The whole "I will just go in for lunch, go to the toilet, walk around the services" bit is just so unappealing to me. I am a person who wants to get in and get out as soon as possible, go home and spend time with my family. I have no interest in waiting around, having lunch in some run down motorway services. Also, dependant on the facilities and time you visit it could be busy so additional time waiting around for someone who is taking their family for lunch or dinner at the services to return. Many people are not very thoughtful and don't care who is waiting and will take their time and that would really frustrate me waiting in my car. Then you might have some bozo push his way in line after you have waited an hour, what can you do? Have a fist fight at the charging point? I even see this situation at petrol pumps so a similar experience when there are limited charging points along with the non superchargers being slower puts me off greatly. I understand the point of the video and appreciate the viewpoint. Please don't take this as criticism but I think this is the fear or disapproval most people have right now with electric cars especially if you can't charge at home. As more people buy electric cars it's going to get worse and the fear that the infrastructure is going to struggle to cope.
I sold my M2 comp for a Tesla M3 performance just over a year ago, and sadly it was a mistake.. First problem I had was dealing with Tesla. I booked a service and had software issues. I booked a date, and with just a days before said service, Tesla changed the date to a day earlier.Why ? Secondly why are the Tesla chargers at service station miles from the entrance of toilets eateries etc etc I struggle walking as I am disabled, that`s a bloody pain. And unless you charge at one of the new fancy tailor made charging stations, All other charging stations have no cover from rain as you see in this video. And lastly my tesla lost 19 grand in a year, and would have been more if I had bought one new.. Just one other matter, There is no point in buying fast electric cars as after a while you end up driving like a vicar/ nun as you want the maximum amount of range when driving any distance!!
Hi Richard, as a UK-specific dealer, how much of an issue is a failed PTC heater element (that manifests as a 12V issue) in these earlier cars? It’s something that I’ve seen reported on Reddit for pre-2021 M3’s and is giving me pause for thought. Any input appreciated! 👍
Had a deposit down on a Model S Plaid. My old boss also owns a Model S Plaid. He hit a deer last weekend. Tesla said 4-6 months to repair. That was enough for me to look elsewhere.

Not that long ago, I would have called myself a petrol head but after selling my M2 and Ducati, then buying a Model 3 LR Dual Motor with Acceleration Boost, I can say I have no regrets. I love the performance and I've made some mods to personalise it.
Owned a number of EVs over the last 6 years but the Model 3 was the car that made performance in an EV accessible.

As a petrolhead, I was on the fence when considering an EV but since I took delivery of my Model 3 Performance in November 2021, I've never looked back. People ask if I miss anything from my previous cars and I honestly don't. My M3P is quicker point to point, has more space, is more comfortable and is cheaper to run. I don't even miss the sound of a fruity exhaust either. There's something quite serene about making serious progress without a lot of noise. Helps making you fly under the radar as well!
I'm in the same boat. With most cars, there is just lots of noise and very little movement. It just looks and sounds dumb.(not talking about supercars here.) The 3P just gains speed so effortlessly.
I still have a softspot for ICE motorcycles, because their performance is so high. And its hard to mask the weight on a motorcycle.
You are a real positive force for the transition to electric cars Richard. I met you a couple of years back and you really sold me on Tesla. It's coming up to two years ownership soon of a Model 3, now with acceleration boost and I'm loving it.

Here in the states, as an FSD Beta driver, I've become so used to the new visualization graphics that what you are seeing looks antiquated and old fashioned. For those who like to drive, I struggle to think of a better buy than the Model 3 Performance. It's super fun, beautiful (with the right spec), and incredible value. I've got both an RWD and M3P, and they're both amazing daily drivers in their own right. The RWD is as light as a feather, makes every turn pleasurable, and has fantastic efficiency. But the M3P is just unbelievable. It's like a supercar crossed with a go kart. It almost feels illegal to drive. In the Venn diagram of speed, fun, safety, beauty, and value, M3P is alone in the centre. The MYP comes close, but it's still a different league.

Fun is not a word I would use. Zero driver involvement. No sound. Inadequate side bolstering. Poor handling. Its really not a great performance car or particularly special. It's a good EV, reasonable car, poor performance car.
@@stuartbarker6668 - A performance car which does daily duties better than a Corolla, is cheaper to maintain and fuel than a Corolla. Tesla never said it was an all out performance car.

@@stuartbarker6668 its faster on the track than a BMW M3 of the same year. So handling is superb, traction is superb. Only downside, its heavier, so it will lose performance in the 3/4th lap where ICE copes better. Have you driven the M3P yourself Stuart?

It was this channel that confirmed my decision to buy a Tesla. Just a basic Rear Wheel Drive but 42,000 miles in just over a year and still delighted with it and I’ve done to Ferrybridge stop from West Sussex with no problem! As you say the vast majority would never drive for the best part of five hours and you can easily even in mine…
I just traded in my CLA for a 2019 model 3 performance. It's quicker, cheaper to run and a lot more comfortable as well.
The cla was of course quicker to fill but also went about 400km if I wasn't too heavy on the pedal with its 50L gas tank so range is really a non issue. The longest trip I had with the model 3 yet was 280km and it used 74% in about 8 degrees Celsius and mostly highway speeds. I charged it to 93 ish before leaving so I had no anxiety at all, arriving with 19% left.
Richard, I have a 2018 performance with 230,000 km. 9% degradation. Nearly all supercharging. It is truly exactly what you said. It's a massive steal at 35k dollars. I'm nearly certain it's the greatest performance bargain ever.

As you know I was a big petrol head before and thought I would miss the roar of the V8 from numerous cars I previously had but in fact I don't. The silence of it all makes it an effortless pleasure and in August I am driving across Europe to Budapest which should be a great test in every aspect.

I’ve had an 2019 M3P for a month now and it’s so easy to drive with one pedal and knowing you have that acceleration is very smug… no brake dust on the wheels and the sound system is outstanding… well happy
Great "slice of life" drive to show how EVs work in the real world. Agreed on roadtrips, I need to stop & have breaks myself, as much as the car does... so NO wasted time charging. Recently I drove 3hrs from 100%, stopped for quick bite to eat (take away, ate in car listening to music or watching videos), and... 18minutes quick bite later, car was MORE than done... 10%-70%. More than needed. Basically, a fill-up.. < $20USD... and on the way for another 150+ miles.
re performance petrol-head driving: engine note/noise might be gone, but... the acceleration AND deceleration control, with one-pedal driving and the motor instant torque and regen braking, is just phenomenal. It's so fine and sensitive, it reacts almost to your subconscious... think pressure on pedal, not position... and steering too. It's like you are one with the car. Then, on downhills, especially curvy ones... wow! Regen braking is like low-gear stickshift, but infinite-speed/RPM... you just drive, and pressure on the pedal does what you want. You can focus on the road and the fun, not rowing all the gears and watching RPMs... though if you enjoy that physical hands-on part, well,.. that goes away... but the thrill, makes up for it. (and, the same applies to the cheapest RWD model, not just Performance!)
As you said, all that performance and fun,.. in a daily driver too. Take the family, haul groceries, roadtrip, errands.. drive slow & steady & smooth, ... or rip it when the road opens up, and zoooom :) Tesla grin appears on your face.
And (free) AutoPilot for roadtrips, taking care of the mundane lane-keeping and speed/separation... reduces driver fatigue so much, it's a huge benefit end of the day, much less tired, drained, stiff & sore. (Forced charging stop rest breaks help w/ that too.)
I call it, relaxing exhilaration... or, is it exhilarating relaxation? :)
Like your videos. One of the things that EV channels doing road trips should do is not simply show how long it took to recharge but, to calm the nerves of the doubters, they should always mention how long they've been driving between charging stops. This way the viewers gets a sense on just how long it's been rather than depending on people having common sense. The truth is, most people don't have it despite what they think.
Hearing "I'm been driving for driving for 3 hours and 10 minutes," or anything of the such, really puts it perspective for most people. Mentioning the miles driven doesn't seem to register in the minds of most. It definitely isn't as dramatic as the time spent driving.
Had my 23 plate RWD for 2 months now and can already say the best car I've ever owned. Efficiency is insane too I believe I have 60kWh LFP battery and I have done 200 miles using only 75% battery at motorway speeds! Easily see 250 miles out of it and the speed is still great at around mid 5 sec to 60 :)
After having done lots of research and speaking to friends and colleagues with EV’s Tesla EV’s are not comparable with other electric cars, Tesla has a very good network of chargers which is way ahead of every other option on the market, the only EV I would consider would be a Tesla 👏👍😀

Much like yourself Richard, I've had a whole range of ICE performance cars including an Exige and R35 GT-R...but the M3P has been the best daily I've ever owned! You're spot on with all your points about it, it really is a Swiss army knife. For example, last weekend I took it for a lovely coastal drive for some spirited fun, this weekend I've fitted the bikes on the roof for all 4 of us to go mountain biking! Can't wait for the new M3's under project highlander to arrive.....
Picked up my m3p end of 2022 after moving from a 981 cayman S and a 500bhp supercharged v8 jag xf-r and had to choose between the m3p, m2 comp, and nearly new rs3 and am very happy with my choice … the lack of sound does reduce the drama of the drive but the performance is undeniable and the cost savings are around £600 a month relative to the Porsche or jag or any of the other cars I was considering … performance car on a budget in my opinion …
I currently drive a BMW M2.... genuinely tempted by a Model 3 performance as my next car... never thought I would say that. They seem good value in the current car market where other cars seem overpriced. Keep up the content RSEV 👍
Ferrybridge is my usual stop from Newcastle to Reading. 250kw always reliable and quick pitstop. Dashboard change to black alcantara still looking amazing since the fitting last September at your garage! However the middle of dash dip in the trim still there, hope it hasn’t stuck in your head since pointing it out 😂 ongoing issue Tesla say as all the models they checked around that timeframe had it too… aka get used to it! Overall an absolutely incredible car and the performance is just never ending smiles.. range isn’t ever an issue and cost to run is so small!
I am in love with my Model 3 LR: 1,5 yrs, 41000km, and I did not miss my Mercedes one day. For my plenty fast and nippy enough. I still think the LR is the sweet spot

If anyone is in any doubt about electric cars then they need to watch your videos. I still get the same old comments about range, hydrogen cars will be the next big thing, the batteries dont last, yawn yawn yawn and I always direct them to watch your videos to get a realistic view on electric cars. Convinced me early on and haven't looked back. Keep up the great work.

The only thing I would take issue with is Servicing costs on EVs. People (reviewwers/press) make this "throw-away statement" about them being so cheap to service, nothing needs doing, nothing ever goes wrong etc... but I haven't yet seen anyone do a video on real-world servicing costs. I think Teslas are the exeption, when you say they don't even have a srvuicing schedule, and you may never need to visit a dealership.
I lease a Skoda Enyaq iV60 as a company car, and my service schedule it every 2 years. Mine has done 12,000 miles and it's due it's first service... noting has gone wrong (excep tthe software still locks-up now and again), brakes WILL last longer like you say etc... BUT they want £310! - I don't consider that cheaper than my previous petrol/deisel cars. I'd say that's pretty high.
So, what are they doing for this mponey? - inspection, possible software update (if there is one this time, doubt it)... and BRAKE FLUID replacement. That is it!
I have shopped around, and this is the SAME price as all Skoda dealerships - it's being set by Skoda. As it's a lease car, AND because Skoda are the ONLY place you can get the software updates, you don't really have a choice to shop local - they've GOT YOU!
I wonder if VW group as whole have similar costs for ID3 and ID4?... what are other people's experiences of this?... I also note that BYD in Australia set an ANNUAL service schedule... so that won't be when it comes to the UK proper. I wonder what Hyundai and Kia are like for servicing interval/costs?
I just think, the cheaper servicing may be an "illusion" we are being duped into, and it varies by manufacturer massively. It's really almost the ONLY way they can make any money, a smore and more manufacturers ove to selling Online... so they're actually just jacking up the prices of sevricing. I'm sure what you're saying about Teslas is totally correct, but how about doing a video on real-world servicing costs for other EV makes?
OK, i can pitch in here with some user experience also. On a 2021 M3 LR AWD:
Positives:
1. Range at UK A-road speeds is enough for 4-5 hours of driving. Range at a steady 80-85mph (continental europe) is around 2-2.5 hrs driving. Long distance driving is very easy - i've done 3000km in 3 days with mine.
2. Fastest A-road car i've ever driven cos it will overtake everything with ease, so I can keep up very high average speeds on long journeys.
3. It is incredibly easy to drive. Just point it and go - traction and stability controls sort out everything, even on a sheet of ice. It's 400HP, but anyone can drive it safely.
4. It really is cheaper to run, but home charging is a critical component of this.
Negatives:
1. It is not a B-road car. It is just too heavy and too wide. It is darty and nimble for 2 tonne car, but it is a 2 tonne car.
2. No gears, no revs, none of the extra challenge (and fun) of a manual gearbox.
I would note that i have quite a few Tesla-specific negatives, but they don't really apply to EV's as a whole, whereas the above points all do. So when the time comes to change i quite likely won't get another Tesla, but i will get another EV.

Owned one of these bought back in September 2019. Amazing car. Moved on to Model Y Lr for small family which I love....but still miss that amazing performance.
Just for reference, I bought my Model S (P85+!) back in 2013 and I just replaced my front brakes for the first time a couple months ago. That's 150,000+ kms and 10 years on one set of front brakes. My rear brakes are still 80% good, so they will probably outlive me. I also still have all my original lights (headlights, taillights, interior lights), which seems incredible after all this time. I do drive it every day, so the car gets a lot of use. I also only had to replace one of my pop-out door handles (passenger rear).
It always irks me when people claim that Tesla has bad quality. This car has been a stunning example of top quality engineering & assembly, considering how long it's lasting, and still feels brand new! No squeaks or rattles after all this time.
Just adding a comparison for my UK to Norway trip last week, over 4 days we did 2089km (1306 miles) at an average 169 Wh/km which according to my maths is 270 wh/mile, 3.7 miles/Kwh, only slightly down on yours and pretty good for what was nearly all long distance motorway/autobahn driving. Plus its a bigger/heavier car (Model S).
I've had many of the hot Japanese sports cars and none of them compare to my 2023 M3P. I do a 400 miles each way road trip every month and it's awesome, it's fit for purpose in every way.
I put my phone on the wireless charger with Waze open too, it gives that extra info about events on the road.

Love me M3LR. Quick refined and super cheap to run and so easy on the occasional long run I do. Costing £30-£40pm to charge mine and only pay more for the superchargers on long trips. Range anxiety is not a thing in a Tesla.

Richard you are right in every point that’s why I have one, then sold it and bought another , taking it to the alps in two weeks, after 12 months of Tesla ownership I’d hate to go back to fuel stations, this car has blistering performance and as we have the solar set up literally costs less to run all year than I was paying for car tax on my last diesel car, did I mention the performance Omg, what a car 😊
I love my 2019 Tesla Model 3 Long Range so much that I'm using it as my Driving School tuition car to teach learner drivers. No clutch. No Gears. No Gas. No Fuss. And if they're not asked to carry out an Emergency Stop on the Driving Test... No brakes either! Yep. Pass the entire driving test without using the brakes once! No more heartaches on hill starts, reticence on roundabouts or trepidation at T Junctions! Goodbye petrol & diesel.
I drive daily, ~350 miles per week, so having a car that cuts maintenance and general operating costs low is ideal. This seems to fit the bill and check my boxes…just hard to pull the trigger on such a large purchase
I’m on my seventh Tesla soon to get an eighth. All very different. M3P is a great all rounder but I feel it’s more of a 1/2 person car rather than a family cruiser. MSP will be the one but they don’t do it in RHD…yet!

It's a very different experience in a non-Tesla, though, isn't it? Like having to plan primary and backup charging locations in advance and then the worry that there aren't any available chargers. That's why I sold my 2017 Ioniq and bought a Tesla.
The savings for company car drivers is immense, and can much more than 2-£300 as suggested, especially if you get taxed on free fuel. I went from paying around £700 per month on a diesel Audi, to around £350 for a BMW phev. I’ve ordered a Model Y performance which will save me a further £300 ish per month 😱
I was never a petrol head. Though I did love the odd car and several motorbikes that I've owned. The change to a BEV has been amongst the best decisions I've made. I don't miss my old SAAB 900 Turbo 16, though it was gorgeous, and I still have my beautiful Italian Red 2000 Honda VFR800FiY in the garage, but as the years pass I increasingly feel that I won't ever ride it again. My first ever car, an Austin Mini would be great as an electric. Maybe I could do that?

Across the pond 2018 M3P owner, former ICE-head. The M3P remains the best and easier car I’ve ever owned. No major service outside in the last 56k miles. I will say in full transparency - you really should get the brake fluid checked every two years even without using the brakes as much. Brake fluid collects water over time and you want the friction brakes to be there when you need them. Tesla still uses Dot3 instead of Dot4 which tends to last longer, but point is there’s still some minor maintenance. Also if something major DOES go wrong, it can be expensive and take a while for parts to get to servicing. Just full transparency from an owner, not a deal breaker in any respect though

Some thing I noticed straightaway about that older performance Tesla model three: it made. Did you change the sound of shifting from parking to drive. That feature it was just sent to the cars as an over the air update within the last few weeks. The car is better now than it was before. This has happened in dozens of ways for these vehicles.
No mention of either Navigate on Autopilot or FSD for ease of motorway or dual carriageway driving.

@@RJC10101 I made the same switch a few months ago. Don’t really miss the 3P, although mine was 2020 version, so few more bits in the YP, like auto boot and wireless charging.
The 3 was a bit more fun to drive, but the Y is more convenient and SUV like, so bigger more accessible boot and easier to get in and out of.
Came fron an audi rs5 2018 model , yeah it was cooler for other people to look at. but there is nothing more fun like the model 3 performance, i just love it!

The Tesla charging experience is so simple and reliable compared to the second rate other and slower charge infrastructure. Just be careful travelling to wales or east of the A1. And don’t attempt any long distance journey in a non Tesla without double planning safely stops and cursing at slow charging or having to queue. Telsa is the only long distance option right now.

Good overview and video indeed. After fours years in those cars I agree with most of it. Two things though:
- it's worth mentioning that a lot of M3P owners get issues with their brake disks when they use Regen braking too much. We've had a lot of Model 3's fail their MOT / technical inspection because of that.
- You call the 2022 LG Performance a 79kWh car. The 2021 performance a 82kWh car, then the 2019 is a 78kWh car, not 75kWh. If you count in the battery buffer of -4,5% below 0% you should be consistent. 👍
What are the brake issues then? I’ve never had any.
The batteries tend to be known as the 75, 82 and 79 so could be pedantic but that’s just the most common terms for them and this isn’t a video to delve into technicalities
@@RSEV The brakes get rusty and at some point the rust won't be removed just from braking. Parts of the disc will stay rusty, whatever you do. There are long threads in TMC and TFF about it. Only frequent and active use of the brakes prevents it. Also an issue with other Tesla's, but M3P are the most prone to this issue somehow.
About the battery pack. Early model 3 from 2017/2018 in the US market had a 75kWh battery pack. When we first got our cars in Europe these packs were already replaced with 78kWh packs (77,8kWh actually). People on the US use the term 75kWh packs, but since we never got this older battery pack, it never applied to European cars. There are two Panasonic packs with 78 and 82 kWh net capacity and two LG packs with 75 and 79kWh here in Europe plus many more. Google "Akkuwiki" if you want to go into the nerdy details. I fully understand that this video was not meant for that.

Most Electric cars have great acceleration compared to petrol cars!, more than happy taking our EV on long journeys too.
Your videos are a real insight to why EV are the future. How much does it cost at a supercharger compared to a generic (Motorway services) charger per se?
Charging cost per station power hour is visible on the phone app. If you avoid peak 5-7pm, you get the best rates from what I have seen.

So what I find interesting in watching a lot of videos about Tesla, and other car companies cars, and I thought about the fact that no one seem to care about how much it cost to drive from one place to another until Tesla came along.
So I still have an ICE car that I barely drive anymore, I don’t even know why I still have it, however, I never calculated how much it cost to fuel up the car, and now that I have a Tesla, I sure as hell never think about how much it cost to charge up my car, because to me the value in owning a Tesla versus an ICE car is that I am doing my small part in supporting trying to save this planet, because we cannot continue driving, and using energy the way we’ve been using it, despite what these climate change deniers continue to say that they don’t believe in climate, change or global warming, that’s it’s all a hoax, it’s just made up and my question to anyone who is in the flat earth society‘s camp on this, is ask your self this question.
What would happen if you woke up 50 or 100 years from now, and you realized that the scientist was wrong and the naysayers were right, but the world went to an all electric strategy in terms of powering our homes, businesses, and our motor vehicles, but the byproduct was that, even though we were wrong about the causes of global warming and climate change, our air was cleaner, we were using energy more efficiently, and energy was so inexpensive that it became something that we never even have to think about, because energy is ubiquitous in the universe, and so our kids were healthier, people in general were healthier, and because of the technology that’s in these vehicles, e.g. (FSD) full self driving/autonomous driving cars, as well as buses, trucks, trains, aircraft, etc. robots that do all the dangerous work that people used to do, now they no longer have to do, and by and large, people were living longer.
They were healthier and they were happier, that they suffered far less anxiety, less frustration, less injury because of not having to engage in physical manual labor that people use to do, freeing up time to cultivate personal relationships, spending more time with their families, and taking care of each other, and living in harmony and peace, with time to pursue those intellectual activities that a lot of people don’t have time to pursue because they were always required to be at work doing some type of manual, physical labor related a job.
So pursuing your dreams and living in harmony, with nature you would think should be something we all value, and should be something we would all be interested in preserving one would think. So wouldn’t that be worth it? I think so. Cheers 🥂

I'm off to Cornwall next month from Yorkshire, 360 miles. Will be my first real long trip in my M3L. Videos like these make me feel less anxious about using the public chargers. Not sure I have the balls to let it go down to 2% like Richard does though 😄
We recently did Derby to Cornwall. No issue at all other than the quick tour of John Lewis car park in Bristol trying to find the superchargers on the ground floor.

Yeah cribs causeway chargers are awkward to find. I wouldn’t usually pick those if just running down M5.

@@RSEV yes those were the ones, I couldn't remember the name. Annoyingly they're the 250kW ones in the area. Worst experience was the Woodhall chargers as for some reason the first one we tried didn't work properly and started at 25kWh and we walked off the fairly long distance to the services building.
I checked in the app to find that charging had stopped and wouldn't restart so had to walk back and move the car. Then I got an email about being charged for overstay not charging.
Great video. Really timely actually. Considering an M3P, 20MY. Was wondering if there’s much update between a 19MY and 20MY. Also, any particular features you would say are a must have, enhanced autopilot? Also, there’s are ways you can get Apple car play for your teslas now. Just search on UA-cam. Great video. I'm very interested in buying a Tesla Model 3 but Im a bit confused regarding charging. The general advice seems to be to not charge beyond 80% and not let the battery drop below 20%. I notice that you regularly charge into the 90s and run it down to below 5%. Does that damage the battery?

I have watched many youtube videos and I find the crucial point of time is often glossed over. The whole "I will just go in for lunch, go to the toilet, walk around the services" bit is just so unappealing to me. I am a person who wants to get in and get out as soon as possible, go home and spend time with my family. I have no interest in waiting around, having lunch in some run down motorway services. Also, dependant on the facilities and time you visit it could be busy so additional time waiting around for someone who is taking their family for lunch or dinner at the services to return. Many people are not very thoughtful and don't care who is waiting and will take their time and that would really frustrate me waiting in my car. Then you might have some bozo push his way in line after you have waited an hour, what can you do? Have a fist fight at the charging point? I even see this situation at petrol pumps so a similar experience when there are limited charging points along with the non superchargers being slower puts me off greatly. I understand the point of the video and appreciate the viewpoint. Please don't take this as criticism but I think this is the fear or disapproval most people have right now with electric cars especially if you can't charge at home. As more people buy electric cars it's going to get worse and the fear that the infrastructure is going to struggle to cope.
I sold my M2 comp for a Tesla M3 performance just over a year ago, and sadly it was a mistake.. First problem I had was dealing with Tesla. I booked a service and had software issues. I booked a date, and with just a days before said service, Tesla changed the date to a day earlier.Why ? Secondly why are the Tesla chargers at service station miles from the entrance of toilets eateries etc etc I struggle walking as I am disabled, that`s a bloody pain. And unless you charge at one of the new fancy tailor made charging stations, All other charging stations have no cover from rain as you see in this video. And lastly my tesla lost 19 grand in a year, and would have been more if I had bought one new.. Just one other matter, There is no point in buying fast electric cars as after a while you end up driving like a vicar/ nun as you want the maximum amount of range when driving any distance!!
Hi Richard, as a UK-specific dealer, how much of an issue is a failed PTC heater element (that manifests as a 12V issue) in these earlier cars? It’s something that I’ve seen reported on Reddit for pre-2021 M3’s and is giving me pause for thought. Any input appreciated! 👍
I’d like to know the difference in Power 20-50% charge compared to 80-100 % as you can def feel the difference below 40%
Had a deposit down on a Model S Plaid. My old boss also owns a Model S Plaid. He hit a deer last weekend. Tesla said 4-6 months to repair. That was enough for me to look elsewhere.
