Excellent statements made here. I was a Guardian Angel in Atlanta in my younger years and so much of what he said resonates truth. Thanks for sharing this!
Glad to hear someone else carries a J Frame for self defense. I’ve had similar experiences to yours when in DC and handled it pretty much the same way, except I gave the order; “Keep away from me” in my best police voice (retired since ‘97).
I didn’t need to go further than stern verbal, but last week I had a parking lot beggar ask for a favor and I bluntly said no and got in my truck and I watched him until he was a few aisles away.
In October 1994, I was a 39 year old Officer of the California Highway Patrol. My wife and I had tickets for the Rolling Stones Voo Doo Lounge Tour at the Oakland Coliseum. Got a motel about a half mile away from the concert. I was also a prior active duty Marine of 6 years and 6 years in Marine Reserves (12 years total) with 10 years as a CHP Officer. We lived 2 hours away in rural northern California. I had a fanny pack with my 5 shot S/W .38 Chief Special with two extra speed loaders. I was able to slip past the event security with my gun, they were mainly looking for alcohol. I had my police badge and I.D with me, but didn't need it. We left the concert early at around midnight to beat the crowd (mistake). Walking back to our motel I see a group of 4 dudes/ thugs. I slipped my revolver into my hand. I am 6 ft 3 in. tall and my hand can easily hold that gun without sering it. I stepped between the dudes and my wife. One of the guys asked for a dollar for gasoline for their car. I did not say a word. The guy asking was the "distractor", the guy next to him was bigger and I knew he was going to be the first to attack. So I had my gun at waist level pointing directly at the big guy's chest. I made eye contact with him, he saw the gun, but the guy doing the talking did not see my gun. Big guy tells the "talker" and nudges him, saying "Let's go, let's go". The talker finally sees my gun, backs off. I just stood there and waited for them to walk away. I knew I was going to be able to shoot at least two of those guys and at least allow my wife to run off to safety. Her and I were both very physically fit. She was a body builder and had won Miss California in rhe AAU (Amatuer Athletic Union) and in 1995, she won Miss USA. She probably would have stayed and helped me fight those guys. The entire encounter was a "Non-Event". No shots fired, no physical fight as there are probably tens of thousands of ""Non-Event" self defense encounters in the USA every year. If my story can help at least one person reading this, I hope the best for you.
I love it this will forever be a classic video . And even though I live by the motto that💩 ain't right . I will up my creep alarm just because mistakes happen once victims happens twice if you live through the situation . Once going into the situation and the second time while you're involved in the situation.
I'm with you! I might disagree with some of Grossman's or de Becker's stuff but there is still some great material! It's almost as good as this video series that I've been watching by some guy named "Chuck"
The Best Self Defense Technique for Parking Lots and Public Places | Hard2Hurt Lists multiple ways of nonchalantly avoiding encounters & evading potential pursuers. Best of both worlds, you can avoid potential problems without appearing impolite with a little "Hollywood" playacting.
You want the absolute best revolver training currently available go to Hardwired tactical class where DB, Wayne, and Chuck are teaching together! Absolute phenomenal trainers.
I can't believe the excuses I'm reading here in the comments. Fireworks all year, don't want to be labeled as racist. Who cares? This boils my blood. Look, survive by learning the lessons, or be a 5 star victim. Your choice. Your excuses.
Good lesson. Coming from a big city like nyc my antennas are always up with a far frequency. Move out of the big city after 55yrs living there, move to a small town in south and my antennas are still up but i am more protect it now with the 2nd amendment🇺🇸
A friend of mine did Craig's course and blogged about it. She's a BJJ purple belt, is "switched on" and can handle most attackers. What I found interesting about her perspective is she's female and approachable. She has to cipher intent. I'm not approachable. No one approaches me who isn't on either the seriously in need of help end of the spectrum or is looking for serious trouble end of the spectrum. Very little gray area for me. Her Blog entry: preparationpracticeandpositivity.com/?p=280&fbclid=IwAR0HyOlR3_hnJW7Dn19DQzqgSZVd68gL30c1HqXYfGkm51x7uOxbRkrig2I
How would you STOP someone from approaching you on a public street? You can't draw on everyone heading your way. And I can't imagine saying "Stop" to everyone who gets close...
Just here to ask a serious question, through active self protection I remember several videos where a person who displays their firearm before there was a deadly threat issued, dont you lose your right to be the defender? I just remember seeing videos of people who display their firearm, and then in turn being shot, and in those times hasnt John said that the one who drew without a deadly threat was in the wrong?
I try to be aware of my surroundings. With that in mind, I'll remember to add the new statement into my thinking and act on it. That @#$& don't look right!
No offense Chuck, but here where I live in the south we do hear fireworks all year long. Every holiday, and every day/night of the week preceding and the week following every holiday. And then randomly when someone realizes "Oh hey, I forgot I had leftover fireworks from the last *insert name of holiday here*.
But don't let fireworks be your only, "take away" from this lesson. Don't fixate on fireworks and how you live in a place where fireworks are set off year round. That is not the lesson. The rest of the video can save your life.
Hey, let me share a tip that works. You’re approached. “hey, buddy gimme a dollar”. You withdrawal a money clip with a $10.00 showing. Toss it to him. Maintain distance. Look nice but firm. For 10 dollars you can avoid a shooting and the litigation as well. The object of this game is to avoid a conflict that is otherwise imminent. I’m not telling you to throw money at random shady looking people on the street, but this is for that one special guy. This works. This is not conceding to the enemy as much as conflict avoidance from that one guy you know who is past his limit. Yes he is likely going to go shoot up, but he isn’t going to try to smash your brains in for three dollars to buy a hit of black tar. At worst, you tossed him money. He catches it. He looks up at you, and you have your primary defensive platform in your hands. He got a 10, and got the message. He leaves. says “Thank you, Sir...” as he goes.
Scott. Very true. I have a few friends who carry a “fake” wallet. It has some dead cards in it and like 50 bucks. Just in case someone tried it they give them that.
Papi Maximus I am describing what happens when the no thanks doesn’t or won’t work. The distance has already closed. Of course you are correct on the first stage of the encounter however if that no thanks is breached the 10 dollars in a money clip provides 1, gives the potential aggressor a chance to deflate and 2, provides a distraction that allows you an extra second to draw. If you’re on your own, ok fine but if you’re walking your mom or wife down the street this will give you what you need not for yourself, but for them. Either way, this is worth discussing regardless of what point a person takes. It worked for me when I was with my wife.
Papi Maximus Yes but you’re forgetting about half the things I said... honestly, at best you skimmed over my comments if not outright did not read. Whatever though.
I am certainly not saying what you did was wrong but couldn't what you did be considered brandishing a weapon in an anti-gun democrat controlled area such as DC. If there is no clear threat just an indication of a potential threat and you put your hand on your gun in preparation for a fight or to try to prevent a bad situation from happening by warning them that you are not an easy target aren't you risking being charged with a crime? I would think an off duty law enforcement officer could certainly get away with it but what about the non LE CCW holder?
What I've come to realize watching his vids is to take what he says & post-process it away from the cop lens he's seen / experienced everything thru. From his own words a lot of his actions/reactions are exactly the way cops are trained to do things, which is obviously no surprise, but nonetheless not always the best option for a CCW'er.
Ur no chuck John...I’d prefer your day job anyhow. Don’t quit it- amazed to see such negative feedback about your 1500$ course....actually after faithful years of ASP I’m admittedly disappointed. As always, bless you and your family
Active Self Protection Extra I just jumped on the wrong thread the other day trying to suggest a vid as I sometimes do. (Police shooting where a Trader Joe’s worker was killed in their backstop) People were ugly...hate to see that. You work hard, HARD, and don’t deserve it. Good luck friend on ur endeavor....pleased to hear it’s not the norm. Honestly very pleased
Ya it’s called instinct, God put it in all of us, I believe this guy handle it all wrong because the time spent talking to his girlfriend could of been his first reaction of immediately saying to his girlfriend Cross the street in order to confirm that these 3 men was targeted him and his girlfriend then show force. For all he knows they could of just did something wrong and was looking to get away and to see who was around. Just because a person is a police officer doesn’t mean they know how to handle a bad situation just because they have military background doesn’t mean they know how to handle a bad situation. I have all types of family members in the military and law enforcements and they will say the same thing. I’ve seen deputies freeze out of fear, but this guy who is speaking his reaction was to fast indicating that he reacted out of fear.
It's sound's like you wouldn't be there at that time with your grocery bags without your gun ? I guess NO, so you are violating on of my principle " Don't go or don't say anything you would'n without your gun " otherwise you are looking for trouble. If you telling me you would be there without your gun, then I'm wrong.
There was nothing in this video about managing unknown contacts. Just a long rambling (too many side tracks) story about how he pulls his gun every time someone seems suspicious. This is not the least bit helpful it terms of learning how to manage unknown situations particularly in the case that its just an innocent person asking for directions. "figure out ahead of time if it's a bad guy and grab your gun" is not useful advice.
Boiled down: Humans are equipped with a built in 'creep alarm'.... DO NOT IGNORE IT.
"Humans are equipped with a built in 'creep alarm'.... DO NOT IGNORE IT.". I ignored mine twice, that's why I have two ex-wives ) :
More Chuck Haggard please!

“Keep away from me “ thanks in train to yell this . There is always room for improvement in our self defense plan
This is one of the best video's I've seen on UA-cam.
I attended Chuck's course two weeks ago. I highly recommend it. This is part of his OC spray class. Take it if you get the chance.
I didn’t need to go further than stern verbal, but last week I had a parking lot beggar ask for a favor and I bluntly said no and got in my truck and I watched him until he was a few aisles away.

Chuck: WE JUST GOT QUICK PEEKED!
Gamer: correction! I think you mean you got “quick scoped”.
Please more of these. Excellent work.
This is excellent. I'll be watching the other uploads in this series.
Proud to be a member or your new channel. Great content!

Def wanna see more of this stuff. And he’s right. If that shit don’t look right/feel right. Don’t do it
The gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker is a great book. So is Left of Bang is another good one!
Ebong, thank you for the Left of Bang recommendation. I have The Gift of Fear but didn't know Left of Bang was a book.
"That don't look right" happen a few times when I was in the Middle East and DMZ Korea. Probably saved me from injury or being kiIIed.
Awesome stuff, already sent it to my wife and several friends. Great food for thought
Chuck is definitely the man!
Outstanding talk. Right on the money.
Great conversation.
I thank you for the great speech/ lesson makes you think for sure
I called my boss, told him I couldn't make it to work, I told him I broke my arm in three places, he said "Stay out of those places" (:

C'mon! way too short. I wanted to hear more! Chuck is awesome!
Kinda hard to believe a guy such as yourself got stalked by 5 different groups in one night..
It's DC.
Chances are that not all of them (maybe even none) were actually hostile or dangerous, but why take the chance?
@@Brainwashed101 I disagree with you. The chances were that they were hostile.

This is an area of difference in state law. VERY much depends on where you are in the moment.

Small complaint. Do we have to have him censored? Seems silly. Takes away from his point.
It's our ethos on the channel to bleep curse words out of courtesy to those who might be in earshot but who have not chosen to watch the video.
No "shit" !
To be honest it didn't really bother me since the curse word were not the point of the video.
