Guys, I got goosebumps just watching, imagine being there. I've seen hikers who wear a neck protector that proves the bite of wild animals, like that arm protector to train dogs, and also carry a trail machete, in case they suffer an attack, they can use the knife to cause some damage to the animal, while it will be distracted attacking the neck probably, every feline attacks prey in the same way, focus on the neck, it is no different if they attack humans, incredibly they know where the neck is.

I took a spare room many years ago in a young couple house once who had this cat from hell. On every occasion when I came to the house it wouldn't let me enter even though I was paying rent. It was even openly hostile when I looked at the place. They were real dismissive about it and just told me to not worry about it, walk in and claim my space. So, one day, I come home and this infernal cat is hissing at me again before I even cross into the house. It's jumping at me with it's claws and digging at me. At the time I was just getting into Cradle of Filth and I had had enough. I thought of them telling me to claim my space. So, I kinda squat down half way, open my arms real big and lunge at the cat while doing my best Dani Filth rasp/growl. That cat took off like a shot, ran to the back of the house and jumped out the window.
My heart is pounding watching! I have grown kids that also go on trails in forest. My son had a bear run in front of him last week. Thank God it was fine too. We have bobcats as well.
lol bobcats are far less dangerous than any puma, let alone a mother with cubs who is watching you move towards her young! i just wouldn’t leave young children unattended and not within reach when outside, but hey no smart and responsible person lets that happen anyways especially if they live in a region with multiple apex predators! but to any grown human? yeah ur fine unless you’re walking up on it and trying to grab or attack it or their young. we are way bigger than bobcats. they don’t want to eff with us

@@travis8504 you’re definitely right people always forget that although humans are pretty badly equipped for fighting off large animals with our bare hands we are still an apex predator certainly no push over. I doubt that mountain lion knows about anatomy but I guarantee that guy knows all the right places to attack that animal. I’m entirely convinced you could strangle one of these to death I heard of men doing it to smaller ones. Otherwise you could pick up a rock and bludgeon it to death I doubt the mountain lion is capable of using tools.
Looks like you caught them by surprise. When hiking in bear or couger country it's always good to alert animals to your presence so they don't get spooked and attack you when they're startled. Playing music or attach a bell so that animals can hear you coming is something that can help them avoid you so you don't come across them in the first place.
Interesting way to put it. I'm in Australia so the major worry we have when hiking is snakes. Assuming you see them, grab a stick and bang it on the ground so the vibrations cause it to get off the trail. I am fascinated by mountain lions. They are incredible creatures, and absolute death machines. Cougar screams send chills throughout my body. Bears are frankly easier to manage. A cougar who is hunting you though? That thing will be hidden amongst the trees, and by the time you know it is there? It's been watching you for quite a long time. Let me put it this way, in Australia you really only need to worry about snakes (basically everywhere) or crocodiles (If in their territory). Snakes you just need a stick. Crocs can absolutely rip you to shreds but you're less likely to bump into one. In America? Bear mace, and better yet a gun is a necessity for in the backwoods. To all who think Australia has dangerous animals, they have no idea just how vicious the wild in America is.
@@jayfrmshington6506 Yeah, cougars only act aggressively like that if they think they can run something off. If it had had any real intention of getting him he almost certainly would not have seen it until it was on him and actively mauling him to death. The ambush thing doesn't just apply to prey, if a big cat is truly intent on killing something in the wild it's going to do everything that it can to insure that something has zero clue it's even there until it's far too late for it to do much more than die. Glad this worked out for him and the cats and I hope it reinforced that when you observe animals in the wild you should do it at a decidedly safe distance and not attempt to approach if you can help it! Observe and enjoy but generally speaking the critters are best left alone.
I´m proud of her. She´s such a good, protective and brave mother. She handled the situation wisely avoiding a major confrontation. She pushed him away from her cubs and avoided unauthorized pictures of her babies. Nobody got hurt. I´m glad that he cooperated.
I’m not an expert but both parties are definitely terrified. The only difference is that we as humans have a larger cerebral cortex. If he throws a rock, the creature will react. Making himself look bigger and making loud noises is the better course of action.
Bro, it's easy to say when watching this vid laying on the couch 😂I thought the same, but no one know what would've happened if he threw rocks close to the cubs. And when it a distress situation, your blood starts boiling, making your muscles to stiff and your brain to focus on basic critical thinking and survival mode. If not trained to monitor mental stress or LIFE or DEATH situations, the time to calm yourself and get your critical thinking to hit back at your brain is quite long. Dude did amazing to protect himself and assess the situation: Never give your back, walkout slowly without losing eye contact, scream and make yourself bigger. When he understood that it was more a bully than a death threat situation, he acted and he's alive. Big bravo

Now if the guy misses the shot then he’s screwed but don’t make it seem like these cats are immortal when in reality, theses cats are more scared of us than we are of them.
What most people don't seem to realize is that cougars normally don't see humans as prey, if anything they see them as predators as well. Since predators don't along at all in the wild, cougars will naturally be on the defensive when they see humans. This also means much like bears (even black bears), they can actually be scared off by humans. Mother animals in general will always be on the defensive against any other animal near them and their babies.
@@JacobA6464 you don’t think a gun would kill this animal..? Maybe the dumbest thing I’ve ever read, yeah because getting shot with a lead bullet going 102mph from point blank range won’t stop a mountain lion..

The way the puma just cuts and runs when you throw that rock is as if you broke its state of mind in stalking you rather than simply scaring it, like it’s going “Oh, my gosh, I forgot about my babies, oh I hope I wasn’t gone too long!”
He actually did try chucking a few rocks earlier, but it was ineffective. Every time he bent down to pick something up, that's when the cat charged at him. It sounds like he threw a handful of gravel the last time and that's what got the cat to run away. When a bullet doesn't work, try birdshot.

Not really a thing about being funny, usually when encountering wild dangerous animals such as Bears or Big Cats you have to make yourself look big and scary, be very loud and demanding, and back away slowly maintaining eye contact to show you’re not a threat
As a certified mountain guide the safest method is leave area backing up sideways until away from lion cubs. It's interesting how she'll do a short charge at you every now and then. Almost like she's trying to bait you into running away, because that would be safer than attacking you head on.
Well to be fair, she considers him a threat to her cubs, and predators want to avoid injuries as much as possible l, so hence if she drive him off without getting hurt, that's what she's going to do

She is a female Cougar and not that big. Humans have killed Cougars who attacked them - with bare hands. In this case she has no moment of surprise and he is a young male. If she had been absolutely sure, she would have attacked, but she was scared too, that why she "threw" rocks and tried to appear bigger und more dangerous. She never really tried to get closer...all she wanted was to "push" him away from her cubs. Facing her and while slowly retreating was the best choice. www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-28941519 This is a small Indian woman in her 50s who was surprised by a much larger leopard and survived the attack. She fought him down in a 30 minutes long fight. Yes, she got hurt too, but the Leopard died. This Cougar is much smaller, while the guy is much taller and stronger, and there is no moment of surprise. A large branch, heavy rocks and or a knife would be the certain death sentence for the feline. In Africa they were used to kill lions only armed with a shield and a spear. Of course only well trained warriors, and surely often the lion got the better ending - at least that's my guessing. edition.cnn.com/2017/02/07/africa/maasai-tanzania-wildlife-warriors/index.html "Maasai lion hunting The Maasai people have traditionally viewed the killing of lions as a rite of passage. Historically, lion hunts were done by individuals, however, due to reduced lion populations, lion hunts done solo are discouraged by elders. Most hunts are now partaken by groups of 10 warriors. Group hunting, known in Maasai as olamayio, gives the lion population a chance to grow. However, in Kenya, where this practice is illegal, olamayio may be used as a reason for retaliatory killing against lions suspected of killing livestock.[7] Maasai customary laws prohibit killing a sick or infirm lion. The killing of lionesses is also prohibited unless provoked. At the end of each age-set, usually after a decade, the warriors count all of their lion kills to compare them with those hunted by the former age-set in order to measure accomplishment." They killed so many of them, that they do not hunt them individually, because there are not enough lions for all...from 1.2 million down to 20,000. So, don't panic. We are the apex predator for our intelligence and the capability to use tool with great precision. Your own panic would be your demise, not this animal. So this Cougar was the lucky one...

No he didn’t…. He was backing away the entire time which is bad and dumb… it means he’s more scared of it than it is of him and that encourages the cougar to be more aggressive. At the time I was just getting into Cradle of Filth and I had had enough. I thought of them telling me to claim my space. So, I kinda squat down half way, open my arms real big and lunge at the cat while doing my best Dani Filth rasp/growl. Guys, I get goosebumps just watching, imagine being there. If it were a wild canine, like wolves and wild dogs like in Africa, it would be more difficult to escape, as canines can feel the fear of pheromones, released with adrenaline.
I’ve seen hikers who wear a neck protector that’s bite proof of wild animals, like that arm protector to train dogs, animal, while distracted attacking the neck, every feline attacks the prey in the same way, focuses on the neck, it is no different if they attack humans, oddly enough they know where the neck of all beings is.

If it had had any real intention of getting him he almost certainly would not have seen it until it was on him and actively mauling him to death. What most people don't seem to realize is that cougars normally don't see humans as prey, if anything they see them as predators as well. Since predators don't along at all in the wild, cougars will naturally be on the defensive when they see humans. In Africa they were used to kill lions only armed with a shield and a spear. Of course only well trained warriors, and surely often the lion got the better ending - at least that's my guessing.

"Maasai lion hunting
The Maasai people have traditionally viewed the killing of lions as a rite of passage.
At the end of each age-set, usually after a decade, the warriors count all of their lion kills to compare them with those hunted by the former age-set in order to measure accomplishment."
They killed so many of them, that they do not hunt them individually, because there are not enough lions for all...from 1.2 million down to 20,000.
So, don't panic. We are the apex predator for our intelligence and the capability to use tool with great precision. Your own panic would be your demise, not this animal.
So this Cougar was the lucky one...
@nøsťaļgīa If the human has a weapon and acts with relative calm the story changes. After all human and neanderthals extinguished Sabertooth who are fucking massive with spears.

Your attempts at communication had me giggling through the whole video.
Negotiating, pleading, growling, hissing....all of it was absolute gold! 🤣
This guy did the right thing, if he would have tried to run the cougar would have pounced on his back, taken his neck, and that would be that. Props to him for staying calm and not panicking in this dire situation.
I heard that’s what you’re supposed to do until it either backs off or you can get away. And I also heard - and got from this - you need to look big like you’re ready to fight
No he didn’t…. He was backing away the entire time which is bad and dumb… it means he’s more scared of it than it is of him and that encourages the cougar to be more aggressive. He was right to not turn his back to it but still, if he just stood there, made loud noises and flared his arms about then that cougar would have probably screamed at him then backed away, once it was out of sight he could slowly walk backwards to his car.
the average man could snap this cats neck in half if he was fighting for this life
@@reddman2401 Dude do you have any idea how powerful those cats are? Cougars hut mule dear which can weigh over 300 pounds. The average man stands no chance against one of those cats unless they are armed.
Incorrect, he was backing away which allowed it to assert its Dominance and he should have turned away as soon as he saw a kitten down the path
Imagine what would have happened if he tripped and fell while walking backwards...
He'd die, she'd pounce...
it would probably be up on LiveLeak
Like in movies x)
I'm pretty sure he kept swiveling his head, and that the camera/phone was on his chest.
@@Shadow-ft3sz It's already on live leak though.
I love how he stood his ground and acted like he wasn’t scared. If you do encounter a mountain lion or any lion whatever you do DONT TURN YOUR BACK ON THEM! They can kill you in half a second.
If you encounter African lion it does not matter if you turn back or not :P Only matters if you have serious firearm which is only way to save your life.
I would never go in such places with out some defense device like peper spray or something similar.
Look up the Dorobo hunter lol@@sawomirmiszczak134
You also don't keep walking toward kittens to get a good video of them as this dimwit did, which caused the whole situation.

dude so true
The way she constantly was looking behind her back thinking about her cubs. Scary moment, but that's a good mother right there
That's all this was tbh. If a Mountain Lion/Cougar/Puma is hunting you, by the time you see it, it's too late. This was CLEARLY just a mother telling another predator to stay away. Using the word "stalked" is disingenuous.
Every time the cat stopped and looked back, he would yell again and shed continue the pursuit.
How the fuck is she a good mother? She left her Cubs unprotected
