Great review, I just finished rereading the book and I enjoyed it so much more the second time around. It really got under my skin this time and I found myself getting kinda obsessed with it. Definitely one of the most fulfilling books to read like you said. The complexity of the narrative style is definitely merited with this one.
thank you! i'm glad you enjoyed it ☺️ the narrative style is what kept bringing me back, but i can totally understand why it puts people off. i feel like if you're willing to "play the game" that faulkner sets up in the writing, it's so much fun. and definitely discussing the book while reading it enhanced the experience so, so much.
It's really great that you managed to approach this truly difficult book just by your own, making your annotations and keeping a reading diary. However, for your next reading of the novel I would highly recommend you to read the unbelievably helpful commentary by Stephen M. Ross and Noel Polk: 'Reading Faulkner, The Sound and the Fury, Glossary and Commentary'. I believe that this is a must read for anyone who wants to approach this novel. Then you can check if your own reading was fairly enough to understand what's going on in the novel or if scholarly research is also needed for us casual readers.
thanks so much for the suggestion! that’s definitely the plan right now, my next read or the read after that i was planning on using a guide. i’ll check this one out, thanks so much!
@@CallosumBooks Thanks also for the reply! I'm sure that the commentary will give you a much better understanding of the whole novel. Apart from it I also highly recommend the Yale lectures on the 'Sound and the Fury', which you can find pretty easily on YT. Professor Wai Chee Dimock offers great insights into every chapter of the novel and in particular its very ending (!), which I find extremely fascinating and helpful.
