Great Q&A! You are certainly an interesting fellow! Good bass players are in SUCH high demand! Sadly, more than once I had to cover it in my bands with keyboard bass, which is just not the same! 🙂. Had you gone the music route in life, something tells me you would have been successful! Great to see you. Hang in there, I imagine you are already making a difference where you are!
Hey man! Really appreciate all that you do. Got into your stuff through your East of Eden videos. That book is amazing and easily one of my top five books I’ve read. Keep up the great work man.
dude congrats on the move & hope it goes well for you in nashville! haven't read either Deltora Quest or A Series of Unfortunate Events but they seem like they'd have been core memories. I think growing up my cousin had the GameCube game of A Series of Unfortunate Events so you just unlocked that memory for me :) also sick that you play bass, hope you get it back from new york soon!
Haven't gotten to that part in the video yet, so maybe you already answered, but have you seen the anime based off Deltora Quest? SUPER underrated show and gave me such nostalgia for the books. Heavily recommend it!
You're killing it, bud. Glad you got so much going on-powerlifting!-and you're maintaining your balance along the way. Love the background shelf (and of course the superstar kitty). And thanks for the kind words!
Ohhh, I love Nashville! What a cool place to settle down for a while. Parnassus bookstore is a must. :) Awww Coco. I'm with you on Dune. It was just ok. Being an academic myself I get that work/life balance challenge. When I started I had an advisor tell me "academia is a lifestyle, not a job." OOOF. Cool you're a power lifter. I'm an athlete too--equestrian (competitive trail class). Happy 1k!
i went to parnassus last weekend! it's a cool little place. it was so crowded when i went haha - i'm hoping to go back when it's a bit less busy. and equestrian!! that's so cool! pet some horsies for me haha
thanks for taking the time to respond ☺️ really admire your content and work ethic. i always end up binging your videos this time of year. hope things are well! maybe a book review one of these days? 😁
I was disappointed by Child of God as well, and I'm a huge McCarthy fan. What shocked me was how dull the prose was, which is funny because his previous book Outer Dark, while not perfect, is beautifully written and more indicative of the author he'd become. I spent a summer in Tuscany over a decade ago and still think about it regularly. In my mind it was golden hour 24/7, haha. I'm glad you and your family got to experience it together! It's nice to see you and Coco settled in, and I hope the transition's going well! I must have missed the Q&A announcement, so I'll ask my question here. What are some of your favorite movies?
absolutely agree about the prose! at the risk of sounding too critical, it felt like a college student read blood meridian for the first time and did their best to emulate it kind of amateurishly. i’ve never read outer dark tho, i hear you can really tell his faulkner influences in that one. im not HUGE into movies, but my favorites in no particular order off the top of my head are: no country for old men, the godfather, good will hunting, the vvitch, halloween, and rockys 1-3 haha thanks so much for your comment and nice words :)
Life is really moving on for you Matt ! Congratulations!! Would you ever put any of your empty journals out for sale ? I will be needing a new one soon? I will purchase !!
thank you! haha not any time soon. i still have way too much to learn and wouldn't feel right about selling these journals yet because i'm not totally satisfied with them.
Great answers and it was really fun to learn more about you! Thanks so much for the sweet words about my channel, you totally made my day! ✨ That’s so fun that you got to experience visiting Italy with your extended family! I hope you get to go back someday! Your kitten is so adorable and it’s almost like he knows how to ramp up the cuteness when you put him on camera 😻. I’m the same way with my channel as well, only my immediate family knows about it and it’s fun to have something just for yourself. That is really cool about powerlifting! I watched a lot of that during the summer Olympics and it’s pretty amazing what our bodies are capable of doing. Glad to see you settling into your new home, and if you miss the snow this winter, NY will always be here to welcome you back for a visit 😄 ❄️☃️
thank you so much for your nice comment and your questions!! i'm definitely gonna miss the cooler weather as we transition to fall... it's supposed to be 80 degrees for the next week or so hahaha, totally different from what i'm used to. and yeah, coco is a total ham hahaha, he knows when to turn up the cuteness for sure.
Good to see a fellow lifter in the literature space - although I'm no PhD and your numbers make my 500 lb deadlift feel amateurish haha Looking forward to more of your content!
@@CallosumBooks I’ve been lifting with a bodybuilding or hypertrophy focus for ~10 years, although I had a 3-4 year hiatus with 50% of my training being spent trail running. After finishing a 100-mile race, I’m transitioning back to primarily lifting as it’s way more enjoyable 😂
100 mile race!! what the hell hahaha, i get winded walking to work 😅 that's insanely impressive. but i'm with you, there's nothing like lifting weights. maybe think of doing a competition one day! 500lbs deadlift is likely way rarer than you think, and i think you'd enjoy it!
Congrats on the move and I really hope you end up liking Nashville. I am from almost 2 hours north of Nashville and lived there for 6 months. So I have grown up going there pretty often and its one of my least favorite cities I have ever been in.
The people are not nice, the traffic is abysmal, and every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and football games, holidays, and random concerts the city is overrun by people wearing fake cowboy hats and fake boots falling down drunk on the streets. It's become about nothing but tourism. Many places in Nashville are also super run down and the city isn't willing to do anything about it, but they will continue to throw money to tourists. (For reference, I am no stranger to big cities. Chicago is my favorite place on earth. I have also solo traveled to places like St. Louis, Louisville Ky, etc and never felt so negatively as I do about Nashville.) I know plenty of people who love it there though. Different strokes for different folks.
Thanks for answering my questions! Sorry that my username confused you, those are my initials 😅 I've never been to Maryland, I'm actually Canadian! If you're looking for horror and sci-fi recs I recommend checking out Willow Talks Books here on youtube. She has a lot of great recommendations for horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and translated fiction. Glad to see you're liking your new place/area and that Coco seems to like it as well. Such a cute little guy he is!
Oh Matt... I forgot to ask. What did you name that lovely darling kitty ? AND.. (grin) I want to recommend my favorite book from this year. Natalie Haynes Stone Blind. Do a little Amazon read and see if it grabs your interest. This lady is amazing, I wish I lived next door to her so we could eat cookies and laugh. If you decide to read it please let me know what you think.
Michael McDowell , "The Elementals"-- very good, very different horror. And for sci-fi, J.G. Ballard's long short story "The Voices of Time"...and Arkady Martine's "A Memory Called Empire." A horror short story I think you can find online-- Douglas Winter, "Less Than Zombie". It's very disturbing, and all the more so because you realize that it's *not* really a zombie tale. It's...scarier than that.

Thanks for answering my question! Yes, read that Ellison story. Glad you like your new location.
Deltora Quest!!! Holy crap that's a blast from the past. I used to binge read those on road trips as a kid. loved them!
barda the GOAT!!
