The Literary Medal of Honor goes to you⚛❤
Infinite jest is my favorite book of all time. Im on my second read right now -- having started it right after i finished my first read; i believe to get enough out of the book it needs to be read at least twice -- and i am absolutely loving it! every time i see someone on youtube talking about it it is an instant click for me. im glad to find a community of people who enjoy decocting this book as much as me; it makes me feel less lonely :).
it’s a great book to connect over! arguably the point of the book in the first place 😅 happy reading! i have my 2nd read in my calendar for 2034 hahaha
Great content!
So I got this on Audible and find it easier. The footnotes are auto so not difficult they just flow. Also I read a lot and other life things so Im about 20-25 percent and not worried.
🐈⬛Your cat is the cutest thing 😍
bit slow on the but your really hot
One of my favorite books! Congrats!
Just finished this novel. Stunningly good.
This is perhaps the best description of Infinite Jest. It's an interesting book that is immersive, and is so a reflection of David Foster Wallace.(I like that you said that it reads the way DFW talks/thinks). I know in the future I'll reread it as it is one of those books that you can come from different angles. The dialogues to me at several points sounded like one of those 1950s dialogues. Very interesting. Anyway, thank you for your analyses.
hey i'm honored! thank you so much! i'm glad you enjoyed the video
Some recommendations… There Are Rivers in the Sky…James by Percival Everett…Martyr!…Another Country by Baldwin (not Alec)…Piranesi by Susanna Clarke…V by Pynchon… Bleeding Edge by Pynchon… so many books so little time… & at a certain point you oughta check out Celine (not Dion) … Oblomov…

Booktubers are so hot 🫦
I just tried, for the third time, to get into this book. I appreciate Wallace's talent as well as the complexity of the text, but it's not for me. No major regrets, but never say never as far as a reread.
hahaha it's not for everyone and that's ok! unfortunately i think the major payoff comes when you get really close to the end, so it's a bit arduous to get there
8:46 best part
😂
you're cute
Im currently finishing in search of lost time and I followed the blog “182 days of Proust” guideline. It’s roughly about 20 pages a day.
oh good luck! to be honest it's hard for me to do more than 5ish pages a day, each page is so densely packed
YES YES YES loved your review and thoughts, lots I could I.D. with ;)
thank you! glad you could Identify
It's a polarizing book for sure, you could only ever recommend it to perhaps roughly half of all readers, but that half doesn't forget it. The sheer mass of information literally repels the bulk of readers, so it's no surprise that the next book is about ... how sheer masses of information repel people. True story, the popular dislike points of Infinite Jest are the main focus points [of why people dislike these things] in The Pale King, it's the most elegant tectonic-scale joke in literary history, all told with the same intense intra-/inter- character depth and even the footnotes. Highly recommended whenever you are ready for another DFW adventure. Also, well played with the bookshelf, the single greatest-hits unit is more thoughtful than the wall of books-I-haven't-read-yet 📖👍
i will definitely get to TPK one day! definitely need to let my brain relax for a bit before i tackle another 1000 page DFW novel haha. thanks for the comment :)
Completed @ 2/3 of IJ. The book seemed like one colossal exorcism of his mind, warts and all. I felt I got whatever I could from his story. Enough was enough. I got the point that tennis is not for everybody. I hate tennis. Other demons out there to fight, ones I can relate to better. Made me think of crazies who with paper and pencil design a fantastic maze of intricate complexity then use an eraser to find their way out. DNF.
You nailed this one, bud, bringing me straight back to the text as if I were reading it again. I'm glad it grew on you-or that you grew with it-and that you found worth amidst all your various rightful critiques.
ah, man, thank you so much. i know you love this book so it means a whole lot coming from you! would love to hear your thoughts on it sometime :)
@@CallosumBooks Someday I'll be covering all of DFW's works in one go (or at least split in two vids between his fiction and nonfiction). A bit of a project. Your vid is helpful in bringing me back to that headspace.
@@ToReadersItMayConcern looking forward to it :)
Amazing video, Matt! Thanks for sharing! Cheers from Brazil! 😊
My heart still aches with longing when I think of this book. It's really something special.
it’s always there for a reread ☺️
Great review. Now, I want to revisit it. I agree that it is a human book.
thank you ☺️
Great video! Labeling IJ as a book about how hard it is to be human is the most compelling pitch I've heard. Maybe I'll get around to this behemoth one day.
so glad to hear that ☺️ if you do end up going for it have patience!! it’s worth it i promise
You motivate me to finish ❤ 🐈
you got this!
Matt thanks so much for this review. Infinite Jest is giving me Magic Mountain vibes - no review before yours has helped me understand what David Foster Wallace is attempting to do
magic mountain is one of the books i've always wanted to read! this makes me excited to get into it
Matt? do you accept suggestions?
I've never seen someone ask this in UA-cam comments - how nice of you. 😊
of course! what’s up?
@@CallosumBooks 🥰🥰 it is a brasilian book The Hour of the Star from Clarisse Lispector. She is one of ower best
absolutely!! in 2025, i promise
@@CallosumBooks 🥰🥰 i hope you like it
To be human is to err, which, it sounds like the author did a lot of. Happy Thanksgiving :)
I agree wholeheartedly! The plot (or 3 overlapping sub plots) are secondary to Wallace's profound reflections - often personal - on addiction and depression. I found his satire and cultural commentary throughout both hilarious, but also ominous and portentous for where he saw entertainment/consumerism/egoism leading America. The hyper self-consciousness you touched on was also a key feature of this work (and much of Wallace's other writing) that I enjoyed. There's definitely parts that are an absolute slog (especially the eschaton chapter...) and I suspect 250-300 pages could've been expunged without any negative effect on the novel. Wallace's pretentious style and extensive vocab is definitely something to adapt to. I plan to give it another read in the future (maybe 2026?) and wonder what I'll make of it then!
hahaha dude i actually loved the eschaton chapter! i think at that point of this book i was really in a rhythm with his writing style... i also think that the first 300 pages (to me) felt like a necessary evil. IMO it made the end feel like a payoff. however it definitely could easily have been like 200 pages shorter. crazy to think that his editor made him cut out like 300 pages of the first draft!
@@CallosumBooks Haha damn. Maybe I was too fatigued to enjoy it, but in all honesty I skimmed through the eschaton part. Interested to hear your thoughts on The Pale King if/when you get around to it
@@TheActiveMind1 hahaha to be honest it’s mostly likely because i was pretty caffeinated and on a flight when i read that part - nothing else to distract me. definitely really struggled through the first 300 pages and im definitely interested in the pale king, ill get around to it eventually haha. one 1000 page DFW is enough for the time being 😅 have you read it?
@@CallosumBooks It was my first DFW work I read, which I don't recommend, but it's structured similar to IJ so you won't be as jarring. He incorporates some of the same themes into TPK along with reflections on boredom, choice, and the banality of existence. You hear the nascent version of these idea in his "This is Water" speech. Of course, the novel was posthumously published so it leaves you a little unsatisfied
@@TheActiveMind1 woah - TPK as a first DFW! that's so cool - especially since you ended up reading IJ! that makes me want to get into it haha
