I believe you really have an outstanding physical condition ! Honestly I don't know if I could manage one single round galoping without falling off due to exhaustion. And I meen sitting like a classic rider, not with short stirrups as you do ... This is very very impressive !
‘You have to be able to sit through antics and not be scared of being bolted on.’ Sounds like me telling someone why they shouldn’t want to ride one of the horses I work with. His name is Stan and I swear he must’ve been a race horse in a past life. He used to do barrels. :0 I got a heart from Shelby. Thank You!!! I love your videos
I always see these videos just showing the bad side of racing but like with every discipline there are people who abuse there horses and there are people like you who love and care for them with respect
I would think that one would need to be a flexible and patient rider. One would also need to be extremely fit. You are an amazing young woman. You have two careers and go to school all at the same time. Oh I forgot, three jobs. You make UA-cam vlogs and videos and you keep up with instagram. How you manage a personal life is one of Gods own miracles. As always a great video.
Before I hurt my back, I had the opportunity to do this here in the South. I think it’s so amazing and I’m glad you make these videos, because it shows how the industry can actually be.
You are a truly phenomenal rider! Your physical capabilities blow me away! *10 HORSES!!!* 😨 I honestly don't know how you don't pass out from exhaustion after the first lap! You amaze me! ❤
I may not have a job in excercising but I have endless respect for those who do! On both sides of my family we've had excercise riders and I've always had an inkling of wanting to try, though I personally enjoy helping those who need to be healed! Which is why I'm definitely going towards being a veterinary equine specialist, I know quite an obnoxious amount about many other animals as well but horses is where I feel like I excell!
In that type of environment the longer you ride the longer you ride and carrying a whip keeps the horse safe and walking on the track facing in backing them up then jogging off for 7/8ths of a mile and galloping a mile and 3/4 on that surface is amazing
I like when you show some of your work with race horses. It’s an industry that I really don’t know much about, but I know lots of people have opinions about it. It’s nice to see someone’s actual experience.
I very happy to see that you guys train your horses humanly. A lot of the time people use steroids and other bad methods to ‘train’ their horses. Your barn obviously loves horses and cares about them and views them as living creatures and not objects for gambling. Thank you!
I ride track work in New zealand. The way you described it is 100% accurate! I only started in Feb and didnt realise how hard it was! Im only just getting use to riding work now but im loving it!
My Dad was an owner/trainer, and for a number of years he would take his horse to the track every day. I didn't ride on the track much, since I was in school or away, so he had his usual riders to do the job. (Horses he broke in himself had very soft mouths, so that made holding them easier). The horses (we had several one after the other) loved going to the track. As soon as they heard the horse trailer being opened at home, they would neigh and prance in the stable, then charge as fast as they could be led into the trailer. Years later, my dogs would react similarly when they heard the magic word, "walk". Racehorses love work! This is an excellent "first person view" video.
im somewhat early haha dang you have to be strong to ride multiple racehorses per day haha i loved the chestnut who was being really cute in his stall lol :) love u shelby you are my main inspiration and you make me stronger and you are just amazing and so great with horses
im rewatching all of your racing videos and I love all of them! it looks like such a fun and awesome job. I'd love to train with them like you do one day! :)
Depends on the person some yank on the bit and hit and kick and walk by some build bonds so there horses know what to do and respect the owner... also some just do it for miney
Love your pro am videos, I was Owner/Trainer for a few years, had others horses to gallop ect, loved it, but went onto Nursing school at 29. Loved that job 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎❤️🙏👍🥰
Shelby Dennis yes very stressful sometimes, Thank you 🙏 I love it, so when you get burned out ( stressed ) in one speciality you can go work in another area. I really have loved my career, I only do private duty now. Make my own hours, It also gave me the x funds to have and care for my horses. Your videos awesome, do you ever do ant training out of the gates? Now that’s a ride, like being shot out of cannon, love the rush excitement of it all, especially the horses of course ❤️🐎🐎🐎🐎❤️🙏
i seriously can not wait to finish school and go into the racing industry it has been my dream for ages I have had my eyes on a racing college for years now but sadly I have 1 more year xD but I have a own ex-racer and we both love galloping on every ride and for work experience im going to a retirement yard for ex-racers to work at for a week as sadly I could not find a race yard to do it but im still happy as ill be working with thoroughbreds xD
Those bucks look so hard! How are you able to stay on?! 😂 Thank you for all the information, I think I am getting bigger respect for the racing industry 😇
Hey, I"M 4TH hahaha It's so cool you get to ride/exercise them, I wanna be a jockey when i grow up and I will have to start as a groom to not have to pay money for a college.Love your channel!
I know this is so completely unrelated to the video, but I love your intro so much! Me and my friend used to watch your videos together on the way to our 4h horse meetings and sing it together😂
You don’t make much money in the horse industry either sadly, it’s very hard to make a name for yourself and if the economy starts to decline, horse related careers are generally one of the first to be affected as are other not as “important” jobs. You really need to know what you’re getting into and make sure it’s what you want and to have a back up plan for finances. There are a ton of options though! You could be a large animal vet, equine dentist, massage therapist, chiropractor, farrier, exerciser (not sure of the proper name😂), trainer, metal worker, saddle (or anything leather) maker, tack/clothes in general, hippotherapist, groom, judge, horse trader, you could even show in the olympics if you really wanted to! The majority of them don’t pay enough to make a living, but you could always have a second job separate from the horses or even several within the industry.
@@leafygreen9036 Your reply is seriously appreciated, Im wanting to get in as a horse trainer, i have such a passion for starting babies! I am younger and your reply simply reminded me of all the variables and such i forget about. I just want to train horses and i get so excited about it I forgo any other important details 😂 You reminded me of all the other jobs and im seriously gonna look into them, i dont live in a very horse area and forget about all the things you can actually have done for your horse!
I really want to get an OTTB some day, do you have any tips or anything I should know? I’ve ridden TBs before but I didn’t think to ask if they had ever raced. Your videos are really awesome by the way!
I like your video, I didn't know all of what you do for excersizing race horses but I did know that you don't breeze them everyday, also my mom has an off the track thoroughbred and she paws at the ground alot and is very impatient, and walk on top of us when leading her, do you know what we could do about that?
So does she ride with short stirrups or just normal?? I don't know much about racing but when she was mentioning why she brought the stick with the second horse I just had a thought how like short their stirrups are x
what would you say differentiates a good strong rider from an exceptional rider? You mention this around 11:20 and I'm curious what your opinion on this is :) Especially since you say these could be riders who don't work out/don't need to work out, what do they do differently that makes this possible?
You are a very good Rider I guess it helps if that's all you've ever wanted to do since she was little LOL definitely a tough job you're a smart and tough cookie you are 👍💯🐝
If you want to be a rider, keep your feet small, and practice rolling off the porch. If you do these things, till you are 16, l'll talk to your parents, about getting exercise license. It's a great job, especially if you have the talent to ride races, but that's after you get some seasoning. Easiest, to learn on young horses. Not so racey! Older horses, can tell, if you're experienced, and will try running off. That's why you learn, at a farm. Whenever applying for a job, with any stable, if they ask how much experience you have, the answer is, " enough, to find out what l'll get paid, before l start".
Do you have any tips, I ride a lovely mare with impeccable ground manners, but when you get on her to ride she goes slow and completely ignores any leg aids or whips etc. but as soon as you get to the furthest side of the school, she darts of with you and likes to get very giddy and bucks. I get nervous around the lower half of the school now since I badly injured my hip from coming off from one of her silly bucks, but the problem is that she only does it now because I start getting tense when asking her to slow down with out even realizing. Any exercises that we could try to get over this?
How many times a week do you actually gallop your horses per week. We do two or three fast days for the horses in full work per week 🥰. Love your videos.
They only have a half tree so, no, not really. I have a video on racing tack or you want to see what they look like..some horses who are broader and flatter need different types of saddles but race saddles are not as hard to fit as other times of saddles.
I'm pretty sure youve answered this before but I dont remember where. Why do their halters stay on when riding? Is it because they can be super high strung?
It's easier for them because they are riding several horses one after another and then someone else will take off the tack. Have a wonderful day/night. -Shelby's moderator

Something Random hi ava
Hi Lulu
This comment confused me...
Something Random I support things like this, but big league racing can be very sketchy. 30 horses died in 10 weeks at one track, it’s a bit sketchy.
Yeah only issue with racing is that often horses get raced at 2 y/o wich isn't great

Great video! How is the footing on the training track in the winter? Does it ever become frozen and too hard to ride on?
So cool, wondering why you keep the headcollar on them whilst having a bridle on as adds extra pressure? X
Their bridles have no nosebands so really doesn't add any extra pressure at all, just makes it easier for untacking purposes
Anyone else see phoebe and then the next second there was a sign that says "death from the ankles down"?😂
Very interesting to see that racing is just a dicipline as dressage and not abuse as people aften say.
That’s cool. I might do that when I’m older

How old do you have to be to be an exercise rider, it’s my number one dream job but I can’t find much on it.
It depends, usually 18+ but some may hire 16 year olds. Times usually conflict with school though
Ok, thanks for responding!
