Yup, all I'd add is that the numbers game is you have to get as close as you can with the numbers given in 30 and the other round is picking a total of 9 letters and again, you have 30 seconds to come up with the biggest word possible, kinda like scrabble

I am from the US, and i have been down the the UA-cam British game show rabbit hole, it introduced me to Jimmy Carr and James Acaster both of them are outstanding comedians.
Jimmy Carr is a little bit forced at times but still very funny. Comedians such as Sean Locke, Ricky Jervais and Frankie Boyle are much more free flowing and satire. But yes all amazing comedians in their own right

Watch white chicks it's an absolute masterpiece of acting, character development with a scintillating original plot.

8 out of 10 cats does countdown is a hybrid of two game shows. 8 out of 10 cats and Countdown. Double the funny as well. This show and Wilty (Would I lie to you) are 2 of my fav uk comedy panel shows.
Note: the show´s title quotes a 1970s TV commercial for cat food: "8 out of 10 cat owners said their cat preferred it."

I think, to understand 8OO10CDC, watch a little of the original Countdown. Susie Dent and Rachel Riley are on that. It's the serious version.
Then watch 8 Out of 10 Cats. That's where you'll find Jimmy Carr, Sean Lock, and Jon Richardson. A Q&A panel show with comedians and TV personalities.
Then 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown is where Rachel and Susie join the boys for a late-night parody of sorts to Countdown.
Then go and watch Taskmaster. And anything with James Acaster. And anything with Richard Ayoade. Who played Moss on The IT Crowd. And watch the old Mighty Boosh.

See the first 8 out of 10 Cats / Countdown Mash-up to appreciate how Catsdown came about. It was such a huge hit it grew and evolved into what it is today. Sean Lock is a treasure - truly.

I love this show and it's always a good laugh as most of the guests are comedians. Plenty of good highlights videos to watch and react to. Jimmy Carr also has some good stand up if you want a good laugh. I enjoy watching all of your reaction videos especially when you both are laughing. Cheers from australia
Channel 4 did a week of show mash-ups and this was such a great idea they turned it into a long running series. 8 out of 10 Cats (named after the tag line from a cat food commercial) is a news quiz comedy show, and Countdown is a serious daytime word gameshow with some maths rounds. One of the running gags is the girl doing the writing Rachel Riley, stole the job from the previous woman Carol Vordeman, because she's younger. It's a brilliant show that'll have you crying with laughter.
I'm joining this channel a bit later in the year, if you haven't worked out what countdown is just yet, as a Brit I will explain it to you... There are three rounds that repeat twice except for the last round, usually the game goes; letter round, letter round, number round, letter round, letter round, number round, countdown conundrum round.The letter round consist of one team picking 9 letters made up of consonants and vowels, the idea is to have the longest word in the round made up of those letters, the team with the longest legitimate word wins 7 points, if both teams for instance get a 7 letter word then they both get 7 points. If you can make a word using every letter on the board, you get 10 points.The number round is the same, sort of, they can choose an assortment of numbers, for example 1 large number, which is 10,25,50,100, and the rest small numbers 1-9. Then a button is pressed and they have to get to that total number if possible, 10 points for bang on, and I can't remember how many points you get for being the closest to the total number. The final round is the Countdown conundrum, which is a 9 letter world scrambled up, first team to buzz in with the right answer gets 10 points.

Rachel Riley and Suzie Dent, are the only members on the Original Countdown, and 8 out of 10 Cats do Countdown. Hope that helps!

9:00 “I embezzled money from the RNLI”. RNLI is a charity whose volunteers save people when their boats are in trouble in the sea/ ocean. RNLI is a very respected charity, and to say you embezzled them is an awful thing to do, which was surpassed by his seal clubbing competition.

There are two main games. The numbers where the players get nine letters and they have to create the longest word possible. For the numbers they get 6 numbers small numbers: 1-10 and large numbers: either a 25, 50, 75, 0r 100 and they have to get the three digit number above using basic arithmetic. They cannot use the same letter twice unless there are two of them and they cannot use the same number twice unless there are two of them. And they are timed 30 seconds for every game.

One of the best shows on British TV. It started out as a charity thing for just one show, combining 8 out of 10 cats (comedy panel show with regular comedians) with Countdown (a serious quiz show popular with the elderly). It was such a success Channel 4 decided to commission a series. It's been going for EIGHTEEN YEARS lol

The R.N.L.I. is the _Royal National Lifeboat Institution_ (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_National_Lifeboat_Institution). It's a Royal Charity here in the U.K. where people donate money to help run a fleet of lifesaving Lifeboats and their volunteer crew, to go out to sea in dangerous conditions, to save sailors etc who are in grave danger.

Ok, so Cats does countdown, as other people have said, is a spinoff of 8 out of 10 cats and the series countdown. One is a comedy panel show, the other is a serious daytime quiz show for the elderly. There are two types of round. In the first type of round they get a series of numbers and they have to add them up to total the same as the random number at the top of the board. In the second type of round, they are given 9 letters, either consonant or vowels - that they pick at the start. They've then got to make the longest word they can with the letters on the board.
The mixing of the two genres makes some real comedy gold.

Countdown is a game show on channel 4 where people do letters and numbers rounds to a 30 second clock. Quite intelligent game. 8 out of 10 cats is a comedy panel show hosted by jimmy Carr. This is a mashup of both.

It’s very tough for Americans to get this we have very subtle ironic/ sarcasm that is seeped in British history traditions and personality , I’ve yet to see any American get this humour and no doubt they never will fully understand, this is a cultural difference, I watch comedy from the US and have a similar problem, I know a lot of the best stuff goes over my head ,🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪👈🎅.
If you think the maths bit is hard have a search for the proper countdown clip, I think it's called impossible countdown numbers round or something, it's insane how he gets the answer.
You should check out Michael McIntyre. A couple of great places to start are his bit on names and his bit on the dentist. Search for ‘Ackle Ackinckacker’ and ‘why do people with the same name spell it differently’

Diago Maradona was the Argentinian player who scored the winning goal against England in the 1986 world cup by hitting the ball into the net with his hand, seen on camera but apparently the ref thought it was a header.
Yeah Diego's 'hand of god', seen by everybody except the Ref, even people who wasnt watching seen it, same with the french footballer Thierry Henry in the World Cup against Ireland who stopped the ball going off the pitch with his hand and lead to a goal, again only it the Ref alone that didnt see it.
Two Ref's that may have side bets on the match, controversial but match fixing happened a lot publicly.
It's quite ironic that the 'comedian' (and I use the term very loosely) who uttered that piece of social commentary happens to have attended Cambridge university. What a hypocrite.
The number game - they draw random numbers and a target number and you have to reach the target with the numbers that are on the board ....

Here's how the Numbers Round works:
They have to create a sum, using as many or as few as the numbers on the board, which equals the large number at the top. The can use basic arithmetic ( + − × ÷ ) to do it.
Suppose the 5 numbers on the board were 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Let's also suppose that the number they need to arrive at is 10. Using the numbers given previously, we could say 2+3+5=10.
Obviously in the actual game it's much harder. The contestant who can get closest to the number given (and explain how) is the winner.
There used to be a competition in one of the newspapers called rear of the year they would judge which celebrities had the nicest asses Sean is mocking it with the rectum of the year joke
Theres a regular game show called countdown and then this comedy style show called 8 out of 10 cats that have countdown episodes. For the game itself half the game is trying to get the target number from 6 random picked tiled numbers and then the other half of the game is teams drawing a combination of 9 randomly lettered tiles sorted in two piles (they choose a vowel or consonant) and having to come up with the longest word with the 9 letters.
The joke about the RNLI is that British pubs often had or have Royal National Lifeboat Institute charity boat placed on the bar so when you are ordering a beer or even often pissed in my case you are tempted to give to Charity but more than often than not prefer the next pint.
The joke after the seal joke is he won 'asshole of the year', but literally. And went to the world finals, defeated by Diego Maradonna (former soccer player), who bent over and set off the fire sprinklers.😅

With the number game, they have to reach the target number (like 666) by using the numbers, multiplying, adding, dividing etc displayed below it. Can only use each number once though. Closest who gets to the target number wins!

it's two shows mixe into one... so one was a comedy show (8 out of 10 ats) hosted by Jimmy Carr, the other was Countdown which was a daytime show about words and numbers that was popular with older people and students, and Rachel Reilly did the number calculations. Basically it the same game as Countdown and same studio but they just have a load of comedians doing it instead of menbers of the public. Mostly they just have a laugh and make jokes but it's really funny yet educational and entertaining all at the same time. It's one of my fav game shows.

She gets told the answers in an earpiece. She admitted it herself in an interview. That's why she was stuck on the answer to the math puzzle in this video, because the earpiece malfunctioned and she had to wait for the answer.
