There’s an actual show in the UK that’s called countdown where general public contestants compete but this is just a comedy version where the panel is just comedians and it’s more about the jokes around it that it being serious

‘Would i lie to you’ is another British comedy show u should watch
So basically Sean Locke and John Richardson are the team captains who work on the show each week. As you can see the guests change each week. Apart of the fun is for the captains to bring in 'mascots' each week (like those headphones for example) but unseen in these clips is that they always give a backstory on why they braught it. You really need to see the full episode. The number game they have to use all the numbers below the top number to get as close to the top number as possible. This is just a load of clips together so its not easy to see whats going on
Point of the original game is to select 9 letters and try and make a word, the longer the word the more points you get and you've 30 seconds to do so, dictionary corner verifies the words, the numbers game, use the available numbers and any mathematical equation to find the selected number also in 30 seconds. The original game show is called countdown, this is a comedy version called '8 out of ten cats' ( an opinion poll game show ) does countdown
Countdown is the actual show. It has letter and number rounds. Letter rounds involving you trying to get the biggest word from the 9 letter selection. Numbers is trying to reach the target number. 8 out of 10 cats is a separate show which is brilliant, and this is the very popular crossover they do... hope this helps.

Countdown - a sensible afternoon quiz show where people try to make the longest word or solve maths problems - loved by pensioners and has been on TV for 38 years. 8 Out of 10 Cats - comedy game show with questions based on strange public surveys. Take the cast of comedians from Cats, add Suzie and Rachel from Countdown, mix in the a good dose of total madness and there you go you have the mad show you are now watching
Since I haven't seen the comment yet -- there might be a method to the silliness that often goes on during each round, as the clock counts down. Jimmy Carr hosted a game show briefly called "Distraction." Four contestants began the show, answering trivia questions. The answers were relatively easy, but buzzing in was not -- hence the name. For example, the buzzer might be surrounded by a cluster of cactus, or you might have to attach clothespins to your face during the round, or you might be wearing a shock collar that goes off when you buzz in. The "distractions" that occur during the rounds might be a callback to that show.
Countdown is a show for smart people.( taken seriously)

There are numbers and letters rounds. In the number round they can choose how many large numbers and how many small they want up to 9 (including them all). Rachel then presses the button which generates a number and then they have to get closest to that number using the ones they picked (they can add, subtract, multiply, divide) but they can only use each number once. The letter round they choose how many vowels and consonants they want and have to make the largest word from them. Hope this helped haha

I just saw this in my suggestions, gonna watch now, this is my fave panel show ever, and I'm American. Been watching this for about 4 years now. I binge watch all the episodes over and over.
