working on load development for a Staccato XC now and was really intrigued with your method of determining how to determine the balance between working the comp and overwhelming the comp. Would be interesting to see a clip or short video demonstrating this.
I would like to see the advantage of ported pistols. Tier 1 Concealment did an excellent slow motion video that showed that ported barrels had less muzzled flip. What they didn't do, is to determine if it made any difference in performance.
I shoot thumbs forward as I learned from good shooters like you, I've heard all kinds of things for example my instructor told me when I first started gripping my XdM Elite 4.5" OSP I would use the trigger guard as a push/ pull like method kinda like that of a horizontal gas pedal....,😂 But the instructor didn't approve as his argument was I'd start pulling my shots to the left by strong arming occasionally. So ever since then it's thumbs forward and now I have a WML and looking at a Arms Republic compensator. I bought the Griffin arrangement one for $60 but I don't really like it's performance so I'm trying something else.
@TheHumbleMarksman I've been following your channel from the beginning and I've never thought of you as a shill. You are one of the very few gun related content makers that I actually trust with providing real information. I sincerely appreciate the time, effort and expense you put into your content. At one point I worked through all the poly guns while carrying Glocks. I determined I just preferred to stick with Glocks and other than keeping my P10F, I got rid of everything else. This was before Sig came out with the better 320 lowers. I also went through the Glock trigger circus. After going to a red dot years ago I realized the trigger made no difference to me. The dot taught me sooo much. My only mods on my Glocks now are a reduced power safety plunger spring, an Overwatch Precision NP3'd dot connector, and a light polish.
I just bought an overwatch precision minus connector on a recomendation, what's the difference with the dot connector? Also, does the safety plunger make a difference or would polishing the stock one be just as good?
Longer Glocks don’t give me a pull to the support side. For instance, my allowed Glock 17(stock), except for night sights, did well on a timed course of fire out to 25 yards. My BUG Glock 26, definitely pulled support hand.
Great video David!!! I’ve thought about buying a ported barrel for my G34. Previously undecided , I think your data my persuade me. Any way… During the entire intro, I couldn’t help but think of Mr. Levy and his Glock 17. The dude is an animal with it! He is a case study on how shooting well; a “rounded 2x4” with poor trigger ergonomics, is something that is possible with time and effort. I believe that the Staccato XC just barely fits into the CO/ESP box. If it doesn’t it’s really really close and could be modified to do so.. if one doesn’t mind “massaging” a $4300 gun😢😢. As a final note, THEY are pronouncing/spell Shills incorrectly… it’s Scheels . Come on people!😂😂
This video was awesome…at this point your the only guntuber who I feel is truly objective in your reviews…it seems your more focused on publishing the truth rather then gaining view counts with click bait
Really enjoy your channel! I watch all your videos, but I need to get better in commenting. I use a couple of different comps with threaded Barrels and one that attach to the rail. My go to for guns with comps are the Canik SFX Elite Combat Executive and the SFX. Without comps, the Canik Rival and the SIG P320 X5 legion
You mentioned S&B and 115s. I’ve been buying the 124s. Just bought an XC but that’s all I’ve shot though it’s. Are those pretty good rounds for comped pistols ?
Ports are the way to go . More ports the sooner “return to zero” you’ll have . Just saying I’ve been a consumer, since 2017 many regrets, and finally found out after experimentation on products and found ports are the way to go
Just wanna say thank you for updating my knowledge on comps/ports. Switched to shooting some super hot 115 loads a friend of mine loads for me. Also wondering if there is a difference between tuning a load for ported barrels or comps?
@@TheHumbleMarksman got it, I've been using ports for a while, and switched out to a comp pretty recently, any tips are very much appreciated. Thank u 👌
I appreciate the time and effort that goes into providing information like this. I simply tried to post a first impressions of a slide I acquired recently, and it made me realize just how much you must do in order to provide us with these videos. It's not nearly as easy as people would think. Holy smokes you packed so much good information in here! PS. The people who talk smack about competitive shooters, and getting kilt in the streets need to watch a specific video. There's a video of a competitive shooter in Brazil essentially going full John Wick on some hoodlums. His accuracy, speed, ability to transition targets...I assume they come from the time he spent training. Could be wrong, but it sure as heck looked like all those reps for competition paid off.
I like no comp and i like to ruj any kind of ammo with no failures ill use my grip . Maybe would be different if i was shooting 40 or 45 but i dont need for 9mm
I qualified using an EAA/Tanfoglio Witness 45 with an integrated compensator, in the police academy in 2001. I don't know if the compensator helped or not, because my only experience with pistols prior to that was annual qualifying in the Marine Corps with (for the first year) a Colt 1911, and then the M9 Barretta after that...and obviously neither had a compensator. At the end of the day I shot 299 out of a possible 300 with that pistol. I haven't had a compensated pistol again, since then.
I am conducting a similar expertment this year but with weapon lights. I have a journal with every competition I have ever done and have notes on places I've messed up or done well. Next Saturday will be my first IDPA match with a TRL1 attached to my Canik Rival. I am very curious to see if there is a difference
I bought a Timney Alpha Trigger for my Glock 19. Then I upgraded it with the Johnny Glock combat kit. It did "feel" nice but created nothing but problems. So much so that I realized I could no longer carry the gun and trust my life with it. And since Im one of those rare people that likes to carry every single handgun I own, whether big or small, this really bothered me. Having a "nice" trigger reminds me of someone who sucks at golf buying a $3,000 set of golf clubs. That person will not play those clubs any better than they would play a 20 year old set cobbled together from various garage sales. It takes a tremendous amount of experience and skill until the equipment you are wielding can begin to factor into improving your results. Once I realized this I swapped back to an OEM Glock trigger. Wish I had spent the $400 in trigger upgrades on something else.
trigger upgrades are very low ROI as far as performance is concerned. Some double/single guns sing with the upgrades - but even most of them are so good now that you don't need to do anything - really.
Raise your hand if you felt personally victimized by THM’s “trigger snobbery is dumb” comment 🙋🏽♂️ You’ll never take muh triggers away from me. Great video. It’ll be interesting to see if comped guns make an impact on results at the next IDPA major I go to.
If the pistol has a decent trigger isn’t not needed. If it comes with absolute garbage then yea get something better. I’ve only ever swapped springs on pistols for lighter triggers with factory parts. My AR had what felt like an 8lb trigger…. Got Geissele ssa-e and couldn’t be happier.
@@zen-Tii I don’t think he’s far off the mark tbh. I have a p365 with a trigger I absolute hate. The triggers in the Sig striker fired lineup just don’t do it for me. But every now and then when I take it and shoot and IDPA match with it, I don’t even notice how much I don’t like the trigger. That being said, I like that my main CO gun has a really nice trigger. I get all giddy when I start my dry fire session and that makes it more fun.
Yeah, that comment hurt me in the feels, but it's true. With the proper solid grip, upgraded triggers aren't really necessary. As you can tell, I don't have a proper grip. 😂
I want to get a steel frame Jericho 941 with frame safety. Lowish slide mass and very similar and compatible with tanfoglio parts. Then I want to machine a compensator in the style of some rare ones made by IMI for the compact Jericho's. Maybe also cut it for a red dot. Can take the comp off if needed and use it as a carry gun with a weapon light
So you really like the Shadow Systems. I was interested in it but, saw videos that said they were having malfunctions with theirs. It is the Navy Seal guy from Georgia that has long hair. Can't remember the channel name. I thought it was strange that it wouldn't be reliable because it is just a Glock with improved ergos.
@TheHumbleMarksman Well right. I guess at the end of the day my thought. As a none competition shooter, I would want what makes me go faster if accuracy doesn't suffer. I guess there is acceptions, price being one. But to Quote Eleanor Roosevelt, It is all about SPEED.
@FishFind3000 That maybe or don't they supply Pmags with their gun? Now I haven't had issues with Pmag Glock style mags but, don't think they are as reliable if dirty etc.
That is a great review. Thank you for putting the time and effort into that. Am trying to get my hands on a Bul aramy sas tac 2 5 inch with the v8 ports . Would like to know your thoughts on the verses original tac ii ?
Awesome video! Would like to see a comparison from you on ports vs comps. T1C made one, but that didn't take into consideration tuning ammo to the comp/port.
T1C does cool stuff but a lot of people in the carry comp know how to make comps but not sure it translates to understanding how it works - a lot of comp makers give bad advice
@humblemarksman Have you put rounds through a Strike One / Archon pistol? Any recoil / muzzle flip advantage over the other polymer frame full size handguns? I'm seeing the strike one back on the US market.
What about weaponlights on Idpa guns now. I’m running a Streamlight Trl1HL on my G17 Mos with an Optic. From my duty gun experience, I know the weaponlight weight makes the gun shoot noticeably softer, similar to having a comp. 😁
@the humble marksman for jus mainly fun but also some competition here n there and speed, would i be better off going with a tanfoglio witness clone or a 2011 style pistol?? As in which one is faster or better?? Also with 2011 are commanders or govt length guns better for adding a comp to?? Ive seen several ppl on UA-cam sayin that commander guns are actually some how faster something about the slide cycling faster?? Im thinking of jus going with the tanfoglio clone since i already have one 2011 style pistol that i coild compare to and then decide which platform i wanna put real money in to and customize to the way i want it although im sure theres not many options for threaded barrels and comps for that gun but ill jus have to see i found a list on a forjm of all the possible upgrades for the gun and its only like $700-$800 so its not like ill be out a ton if i dont like it or it turns out to be a crap gun even tho all the reviews so far have been good theres some negatives like the trigger sucks but that can be remedied, any help is greatly appreciated man!!!
Hi David, do have any suggestions for a load recipe for the DR920P? What were you running in it at the match? Just bought one based largely on your reviews.
What did you feel was the flatest shooter between the axg legion, spectre comp and the shadow comp?? Persomally I would think with the shadow being so light in weight that the felt recoil and muzzle flip would be more then a heavier one????
Glock does come out the box with not great ergos but if you are good with a dremel or have flo you can make it the best very easily double undercut and some gas pedal cuts .
@13:10 "Generally speaking, heavier projectile loads use faster burning powders which generate less smoke. The lighter for caliber projectiles usually use slower burning powders that require higher charge weights and generate more smoke." Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant here, but this isn't true, in terms of projectile weight, powder type, and powder charge. At least not with any 9mm load I've done or any load data I've read. - *Heavier projectiles use faster powder* You can use a wide range of powders for heavy projectile loads. However, using faster powders for heavier projectiles usually results in much lower muzzle velocity. Using slower powders, especially in longer barrel pistols, results in higher muzzle velocities. While developing loads for my 5" Rival and XFive, a 147gr load at near max pressure using a faster powder barely reached 900fps. Using the same projectile but a slower powder, I can easily reach 1000fps without going over pressure. - *Lighter projectiles use higher charges of slower powders* This is half and half. Again, you can use many different powders, and just like heavier projectiles, using a slower powder usually results in higher muzzle velocity. But with the lighter projectiles, the difference in velocity is much smaller. Saying lighter projectiles require higher charges of slower powder is true, but it's also true when using fast powders. In 9mm, ANY given projectile will use a higher charge weight of slow powder compared to fast powder. It also means with any given powder, the charge weight will be higher with lighter projectiles. Otherwise, great info and content as usual.
@@TheHumbleMarksman I don't understand what muzzle flash has to do with powder burn rate or muzzle velocity. I use Vihtavuori mostly in my 9mm, and all their powders, fast and slow, have very little muzzle flash. Titegroup is a very fast powder, and it has LOTS of flash. But HP-38 is close in burn rate and it has much less flash. Did you mean muzzle flip instead of flash? Autocorrect typo? I shoot slower precision, not fast action, so I don't notice flip so much as overall recoil impulse and how "pleasant" something is to shoot ( for when I'm teaching a new shooter ). For most of my shooting, the only pistols I notice as flippy are the tiny compacts. With full-size pistols, there's not a lot of difference to me, unless you're using a steel frame vs a polymer. I find 147gr around 950fps a very pleasant round to shoot, followed by normal 115gr loads next. For whatever reason, 124gr loads feel the most snappy to me. Next time I load up some rounds, perhaps I'll try to see if I can tell a muzzle flip difference in slow vs fast powders.
Great video - thank you. Comparing the P320 AXG Pro and AXG Legion, what if you got the barrel of the AXG Pro ported. Could you have the best of both worlds?
I have the GA micro carry comp on a few guns like my g19 and 92x centurion and I have been pretty happy with them, but I can see how if you don’t already have good recoil control, you might not think it is doing anything.
Your knowledge and insight are highly appreciated, David. Very enlightening information, thank you! By the way, I live in Houston, TX. Do you live in Texas?
So I have a fnx 40 that's quite snappy which doesn't bother me, though I would like to upgrade it with mods like a comp, swp makes a really good threaded one that I would like to apply, my question is should I go through with it or just leave it
Just wondering what you say Max modified with his grip? If the mod you refer to is removing the mag well? He removes the mag well for competing legally in IPSC production optics which I’m sure you are well familiar with?
Great vid as usual but I'm going to dock points for the lack of 80's synth music. BTW, is the SS DR920P IDPA legal? Those new rules are confounding and confusing. Also is it legal if you get the DS9 ported?
I enjoy your content but am curious because I thought the pressure was the gas like when they say this is a hotter load and the helps with the bullet and compensator
pressure is higher on powder puff loads - a fast powder creates a pressure spike at the point of ignition and most of the combustion is complete before the bullet has moved down the chamber - slower powder has a lower initial pressure and continues to burn as the bullet moves down the barrel. The slower powders keep pressure lower because as the bullet moves the space for combustion is expanding - so higher velocity ammo almost always is achieved with slower burning powders with higher charge rates. At some point - barrel length enters the equation as any unburned powder exits the muzzle non combusted doesn't convert to gas to push the bullet. Gas is a factor of how much gun powder is burned - you can have high pressure rounds with low gas (most competition 147 grain loads are high pressure, low gas). High velocity ammo almost universally has more gas - which is why muzzle flash with 115s is usually a bigger fireball than 147s.

Awesome BDE content as usual!! 🙌
Any way…
During the entire intro, I couldn’t help but think of Mr.
Thanks for doing the work on this. You basically did a “Mythbuster” test on Comps
Great as always, Would be neat to see the comp gun vs the same model ported.
that's a mighty heavy lift and is a one way trip for 1000s of $ in equipment. I'm probably not going to be doing that.
@@TheHumbleMarksman But wait!!! Arnet you a shill that gets everything for free??? :)
Good video as always and been watching for yrs now and that's for a reason. Always good info
Ports are the way to go . More ports the sooner “return to zero” you’ll have . Just saying I’ve been a consumer, since 2017 many regrets, and finally found out after experimentation on products and found ports are the way to go
I am very interested to see how the new BUL Air with the optics mount and the new Tac II Pro would fair against the P320's
Just wanna say thank you for updating my knowledge on comps/ports. Switched to shooting some super hot 115 loads a friend of mine loads for me. Also wondering if there is a difference between tuning a load for ported barrels or comps?
Ports vent less gas than a comp and are overwhelmed quicker
@@TheHumbleMarksman got it, I've been using ports for a while, and switched out to a comp pretty recently, any tips are very much appreciated. Thank u 👌
I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the Zev hypercomp pistol?
For comparison, the area of the IDPA "Down Zero" circle is 50.265 sg in., USPSA "A" zone is 66.
Yeah - but USPSA target is much easier to hit
This is the best compensator review I have ever seen
Great info here. Thanks for all the hard work.
Another great video - thanks!
I’ll have to try a Shadow Systems DR920P…
I love the channel but being new it took me a couple episodes to figure out that the "humble" is sarcasm at it's finest.
hey I was pretty well behaved in this one.
Raise your hand if you felt personally victimized by THM’s “trigger snobbery is dumb” comment 🙋🏽♂️
You’ll never take muh triggers away from me.
Hand raised. I thought Humble’s trigger comment was off the mark. It’s hard to shoot well with some shit Glock trigger.
The rules now allow weapon mounted light, in a way it somewhat works like a compensator. The muzzle flip is more subdue in a polymer frame.
Thoughts on the Johnny Glocks trigger systems? Are they reliable long term?
Shadow 2 with brass or tungsten grip panels. If you aren't getting your arm workout done while shooting, what are you even doing? Do you even lift?
Great Info..! I think I’m leaning towards my first Gucci Glock..!😂
I love you the humble marksman!!!🎉 you have fans world wide 🔥
First Shooter DESTROYED THAT HOSTAGE!
There is a shoot target about the no shoot - tough to see how they presented it
comp vs practice... im not a fan of comps
but you like im a fan of the 2A so we can always agree!!!!!!!
im talking from a normie. no pro like you good sir!! like the channel
Their manufacturing isn’t keeping up with demand so their quality has started to slip.
I have heard that as well - this video isn’t about me liking them - but it got me better scores both comped and non- comped
@@FishFind3000 Not true, their quality has always been hit or miss. Source, I’m an early adopter - 2 guns in, neither are 100% reliable.
Ohhhh, so you chose to send mpa a check instead?
Niiiice..
👍🏽
That is a great review. Thank you for putting the time and effort into that. Am trying to get my hands on a Bul aramy sas tac 2 5 inch with the v8 ports . Would like to know your thoughts on the verses original tac ii ?
Great video…lots a great info and work went into this.
I have one in now that I haven’t shot yet
Sweet, looking forward to the review. Always thought it was an interesting design.
What about weaponlights on Idpa guns now. I’m running a Streamlight Trl1HL on my G17 Mos with an Optic. From my duty gun experience, I know the weaponlight weight makes the gun shoot noticeably softer, similar to having a comp. 😁
0:39 freaking win 🏆 ❤🥇
Great comparison video.
They help enough to definitely ad one to your edc.
Im thinking of jus going with the tanfoglio clone since i already have one 2011 style pistol that i coild compare to and then decide which platform i wanna put real money in to and customize to the way i want it although im sure theres not many options for threaded barrels and comps for that gun but ill jus have to see i found a list on a forjm of all the possible upgrades for the gun and its only like $700-$800 so its not like ill be out a ton if i dont like it or it turns out to be a crap gun even tho all the reviews so far have been good theres some negatives like the trigger sucks but that can be remedied, any help is greatly appreciated man!!!
picked up a 10fo Defiant Stock Master..
Hi David, do have any suggestions for a load recipe for the DR920P? What were you running in it at the match? Just bought one based largely on your reviews.
I honestly can’t remember - It was a 1250 FPS 115 I think
What did you feel was the flatest shooter between the axg legion, spectre comp and the shadow comp?? Persomally I would think with the shadow being so light in weight that the felt recoil and muzzle flip would be more then a heavier one????
WOW, an amazing comprehensive, all-in-one video! Thank you creating this.
Glock does come out the box with not great ergos but if you are good with a dremel or have flo you can make it the best very easily double undercut and some gas pedal cuts .
@13:10 "Generally speaking, heavier projectile loads use faster burning powders which generate less smoke. The lighter for caliber projectiles usually use slower burning powders that require higher charge weights and generate more smoke."
Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant here, but this isn't true, in terms of projectile weight, powder type, and powder charge. At least not with any 9mm load I've done or any load data I've read.
- *Heavier projectiles use faster powder*
You can use a wide range of powders for heavy projectile loads.
- *Lighter projectiles use higher charges of slower powders*
This is half and half.
Which has more muzzle flash in your experience? It’s true enough to be generally true
Love the fishing vest in the matches lol.
Excellent video with awesome explanation.
Really great content and production
Your knowledge and insight are highly appreciated, David. Very enlightening information, thank you!
By the way, I live in Houston, TX. Do you live in Texas?
DFW area - was in Eagle Lake thursday/Friday
@@TheHumbleMarksman Great! I would love to watch you shooting in a tournament here in Texas.
hey HumbleMarksman, love your channel. Do you own any 40's, 10mm and or 45acp? Which do you prefer? Brand?
I have some 45s. I don't have any 40s or 10s right now.
Do you think it's possible with spring tuning to get the AXG Pro to shoot as soft or softer than the AXG Legion?
Unlikely - it’s not a hammer fired gun
Yes and yes
Excellent video! Did you have any malfunctions with the shadow systems while out that day? It seems a lot of folks have had issues.
No I haven’t - I use the light RS and it did stovepipe for two mags while breaking in but has been 100% since
@TheHumbleMarksman thank you for the feedback Brother.
