Senior, retired copper, "IDPA purist" here. As a two division MA who has enjoyed some successes at major matches, this is excellent advice for folks looking to bump up their performance / classification. Thanks for posting!
I see crowding the walls and ports a lot in USPSA. Steve Anderson had a podcast where he pretty much said that 'anything you get into you must get out of' and that boosted my movement skills a lot.
I've been shooting IDPA for about a year. USPSA was just a bit much for my 60 year old body lol. I have noticed the same things. I'm starting to train IDPA with USPSA tactics and seeing immediate improvements on time. Thanks for the confirmation that I'm moving in the right direction
I know this is an older video, however I came across it & recently had an opportunity to apply the concepts you rolled out. It made a significant positive difference (3 second Stage average)on the overall outcome of the match, providing that you make the effort to avoid violating any IDPA Procedural penalties. Great video! A lot of hard leans in my area which force crowding cover and heavy weight on one foot to get the shots on target. This makes very difficult to explode out of position to next spot. This is one of the major differences I see between IDPA and USPSA.

Good stuuff. And for the non believers, i shoot mostly USPSA, todays IDPA match I shot like a USPSA match and even tho i'm fat and slow, my raw time was 8th out of 40 shooters. We wont talk about hits...

I’m currently working on some of those things. Movement is the next low hanging fruit for me. Would love more deep dives on movement in general. Love the walk and talk format by the way.
I'm getting tuned up on my movement before I go deep on that stuff. It's a process I'm a good bit of the way to getting where I need to be but am not there yet.

Damn this looks like so much fun! It's non-existent in here Hawaii. Well, there is a Facebook page but no activity. We're moving to Washington, and soon hopefully. I have a CZ and my Walther PDP that I haven't even shot yet. I hate the only public range here where you can't load more than five rounds or draw from a holster, and forget rapid fire. Unless all you want to do is waste ammo and get your gun dirty, I'd rather stay at home and dryfire. However, the Police Departments range is next door and we get to listen to all the explosions and rapid fire and live vicariously through them. You are my primary source for USPSA information and instruction so please just keep doing what you do. I appreciate your style and quality of content you put out.

You are a qualified great pistol shooter with credentials, no doubts about it, above 99% of your followers (me, one of them) and your nemesis, critics too. AND YET, I have seen some "gun buffoons" talking smack about you, criticizing your reviews and personal assessments. It is ridiculous, and funny too. Those type of guys fall for the long bearded guys with tattoos all over, wearing 5.11 tac pants, and, Ta Daaa! A Shemagh around the neck (that's an Arab scarf for you). They shoot fast, don't show the targets, talk sh💩 and their followers go: "Wooow!" To each their own. I stick to the knowledgeable experienced with actual practical worthy advise. I started in IDPA, and stepping into the big leagues of USPSA was an eye opener.
Good movement and soft entry into position, is Yuuuge. In my two day classes we spent about 70% of day two on just movement and position entry. So many have no system and haven't spent any time analyzing it.
Sneak in, gun up and be ready to shoot as soon as the rear leg breaks ground. You should be shooting as you gently place that front leg.
For me, visualization takes practice to develop as an on-demand capability.
The one thumbs down is some dude shooting a 1911 in a leather holster

Nice work breaking the fundamentals of competing. Every time I watch one of your presentations it reminds me of boxing. Ring size, ring speed, gloves being used, mindset (visual preparation), and environment.

Wasn't there a recent IDPA rule change making fault lines no longer extend to infinity?
They came out with a clarification to that rule. You just can't expose yourself to another array/target if you back up away from the fault line.

Dumping rounds and brass WMLs are both (to my mind) great examples of how well meaning rules can produce stupid results. Some sort of rule to prevent a long trail of half full mags on the ground might be a good idea for IDPA, I don't think I've ever seen a defensive or LEO shooting video where non slide lock reload was performed during the shooting, and if IDPA wants to focus on realism, that might be worth taking into account. But of course some people think "oh I'll just fire more rounds than necessary so I can do a running reload without getting a penalty." Same with the weapon mounted lights. There's probably significant overlap between people who shoot matches just to get practice with their defensive weapons in and people who have WMLs, and it's nice to accommodate them. But of course some people just thought "ah, a brass light would go nicely with my thug plug, brass base pads and tungsten guide rod."
If you understand how the rules got to where they are now, you might see that things are a bit more complicated when you are trying to have a fairly judged, smooth competitive match while trying to hang on to defensive pistol tactics as much as possible. Compromise in the rules is inevitable to keep the sport alive and thriving and they have gone through quite a continuing evolution. Also, not sure what you have against people adding weight to very light guns to help them shoot better. As long as it makes weight, fits in the box, and shoots well, I'm not sure how modifications like a mounted light are "stupid"
@@NDcompetitiveshooter I don't think a WML is stupid, I think tailored to rules mods like brass WML are pretty silly though. Like I said, I think it's nice for match rules to accommodate people who use weapon mounted lights and want to shoot with something like their CCW or duty setup. But then people figure out how to make the heaviest light possible as if a TLR-1 isn't already heavy enough, just to get as close to max allowable weight. It's a little goofy.
@@6236003 I compete with a Glock. It comes with a significant disadvantage in that the gun is too light. Ben Stoeger feels that most people shoot a 42-43 oz gun best. My Surefire 300 doesn't add much weight. If I could add something useful and legal to get my gun to weigh 43 oz, be well balanced, and shoot better--I want it on my competition gun and my carry gun (which are the same). One man's treasure is another man's silly. I did look up the brass WMLs after seeing your comment and was disappointed that they are not really functional as lights (only technically functional to meet the letter of the rules). That was a missed opportunity for them IMO

I've built so many tract homes like those in that neighborhood. Most of the time those things are no different than a standard 3 bedroom apartment, with an added office.. lol.. They get spruced up with a porch, steep roofs and fake dormers on the attic and maybe a couple of vaulted ceilings--- but It's amazing to me how overpriced they can get (compared to the cost of building them), even though it's cheap here.. I've seen these sell new for as low as $150k.. . and in better locations, sell for as high as $300k (here in Oklahoma).
when these were built they were pretty reasonable in 2008. Scarcity being a thing - they're like 2x what they were new back then. They're up like 20% in the past 3 years. The real estate market in NTX is stupid right now. Makes no sense.

So much so that you guys actually gained congressional seats and both of those states lost seats.. Cali is about to lose their governor and it's glorious.
Hey Dave, I recently read the 2023 IDPA and found one rule that seemed ridiculous. No air gunning (finger pointing) during a walk threw or standing in course of fire..

IDPA generally gives you less time and opportunity (air gunning) to develop a mental rehearsal of your stage plan than USPSA. I believe the original idea is based on testing a little more of your defensive firearm skills which can require more conscious shooting; however, I don't think competitors really like that rule at all. It also makes it tough for people crossing over to an IDPA match, because they will invariably need to be reminded of this rule which makes the whole experience more annoying than it really needs to be.

Off topic but not that much. Any suggestions or big cons to dovetail mounted red dots? I was thinking about putting a dot on my Shadow 2, but in IPSC a milled slide is not legal for Carry Optics (and a Shadow 2 OR is too expensive lol)
Height over bore definitely sucks ass. Yes it's just a quarter of an inch, but that's enough to mess with your trained draw and fishing for the red dot.
And i have no idea about reliability. But i see none of the top competitors doing it. So buy once cry once and get the real deal Shadow OR.
@@texasranger24 makes sense. It’s the first one so no training to mess up, and it doesn’t look worse than a Glock MOS for height over bore. I know the OR is better but my interest is only in starting to get the feeling of a dot, not to be a top competitor.
@@stevailo I installed an Outer Impact Universal Dovetail Mount on my Shadow 2 to see if I liked it with an optic - no big expense as I have a few optics laying around already
It works just fine IMO and is easy to install - I followed instructions and used a torque wrench etc - it came with all the right screws included - just have to be careful removing the S2 rear sight
I ran timed speed drills with it from my IPSC rig and with the HS507C V2 and had no issues presenting or tracking the dot - stayed zero after about a 300 round test
I actually prefer shooting OR poly striker fired pistols , so it may not see too much action but it’s an option if you have a dot already and just want to test it out
Long term dovetail mounts often fail on high burn guns - great way to dip your toe in the water though

You can but would probably force more recovery on the sights
@@TheHumbleMarksman hmm... I hadn't thought about it that way, also I imagine you're using some of the time it takes to slow down to recover the sight and not having to add any vertical adjustments to the mix, would be more efficient. Thanks.
It’s funny how IDPA cultural dogma if you will, ends up being less efficient even when considering defensive/tactical applications. Being fast and effective/accurate always trumps slow and inefficient even when it’s supposedly “mo’ tactical.”

"Shooting community?" ... USPSA thinks that they are right, just as IDPA, IPSC, police officers, and military veterans. Since it is still a relatively free country, we can all have our own opinions.
eh - but they'll literally give you a gun and a belt to wear if you come compete. Everyone has opinions on why their favorite brand is the best - increasingly - I see less hostility between the two as there's plenty of cross over.
@@TheHumbleMarksman Well I am glad you have seen that. I have never seen it. Not once. As soon as the snobs with their race guns find out that you are new and you do not have a reloading bench at home, you are treated like a second-class citizen.
This game has a lot of turnover in people who dabble and never come back. relationships are built from continued exposure - I have no doubt you're not going to get hugged the same way you would if you've been showing up and participating for a long time. Especially if your'e helping show up early and build or volunteer.
I have literally lent magazines and even guns to new guys who showed up to shoot matches, most recently a guy I lent a spare pair of expensive eye pro simply because he made the comment he had heard good things about it. I've seen people give new guys ammo when their janky ammo didn't work. Plenty of serious gun smithing taking place in the safe area.
All of that to say - I'm sorry your experience wasn't great - I have seen a lot of veteran shooters do a lot of nice things for strangers and I've been doing this a long time. that's across probably 7 clubs in two states.
Speaking candidly - your comments on "snobs" and "race guns" make me suspect if some of your problem isn't in the mirror. I have no doubt there are people out there like that do exist - but it's been very far from the norm I've encountered in doing this a long time all over the country.
@@TheHumbleMarksman I have been handling firearms for 51 of my 61 years. In the Army and in other settings. That is to say, I am not novice that just purchased my first hand gun. Some folks are easy-going and some are not. I call them as I see them.
What’s a good divisions for someone who hasn’t done any of this. I am interested in trying these competitions but I don’t know where to get started.
If you don't have a red dot - assuming you mean IDPA - Stock Service pistol if you have a mostly stock glock styled gun. if it's customized - you'd be doing Enhanced Service Pistol. If you have a red dot - it's Carry Optics. If it's glock 19 sized with irons - then Compact Carry Pistol .
