This is a detailed tutorial for knitting a ribbed hat. I tried to develop a pattern that is both easy to knit and has a modern look. This hat (or beanie as some call it) is knit in the round on circular needles using the magic loop technique, but you can knit it with dpns as well. In fact, I usually switch to dpns for the last few decrease rounds.
This pattern is more of a recipe, meaning it shows you exactly what you need to do to make your hat fit - no matter your yarn or needle size. Since you would have to knit a swatch anyway, I personally don't feel its more complicated anyway. I will show you the tubular cast-on but you can use a longtail cast-on or any other method you prefer- as long as it's stretchy. There's a section where I show you how to determine when you can start decreasing the hat, and of course, I'll also show you how to finish things, weave in the ends and block it into perfect shape. Enjoy.

This tutorial was a serious rollercoaster of emotions.

Popping a stich marker on every 20 stitches when casting on is such a good idea especially for people like myself who have very poor vision. I can't believe that after over 60 years of knitting I never thought of doing that. Even when I started to lose my sight the idea never occurred to me. It will save me a lot of frustrating counting and recounting of stitches.

Great idea to add markers for every 20 sts of cast on. For all the years I've been knitting, I've never done this but rather keep casting on until I think I have enough. Then end up counting and recounting! I'll train myself to do this from now on and I know it will save a ton of time :)
I am a beginner knitter and have always wanted to knit a beanie but I am always intimidated by the “difficulties and complexities” of circular needles, using dpn to decrease and just the sheer fear of starting a project which I may abandon later. But whenever I come across your tutorial videos, I gained some confidence in tackling the new project because you make it seemed so simple and doable. Extra plus point is your tutorials are always very clear. Will definitely try this as my first beanie project. Thank you very much for putting these videos for free especially for us beginners who may not want to spent more money buying patterns when we are spending a lot on buying the initial materials.
you can do it! go slowly and I'm sure you'll be able to tackle this beanie as well. It's easier than it may look. Maybe you will have to redo the first 10 rows once..but hey..that's what I call a learnin experience

Thank you for your wonderful videos. Im a crocheter and am so intimidated by knitting but i have used your videos to teach myself how to do it. I love how you are to educational for beginners but still teach us how to make things look nice and well made.
I now do hats in the same pattern as the scarves for sets, usually a reversible stitch. I also fold over the brim and knit together to keep ears warmer and produce a nice clean edging. This is a good pattern and I made my first hat using it. The recipient loved it. Thanks!

I have found a lot of other knitting tutorials difficult to follow. Yours are the best! I am a brand new knitter and this hat is my very first project. I have started and stopped to unravel a couple of times, but am now 12 cm into it and my stitches finally look good. Thanks again for being there for me!

Your tutorials are always so clear, thank you! I think of myself as an intermediate knitter, but the hat I made for myself still seemed a bit 'wobbly'. Thanks to you, I now know why: I used the wrong cast on! For the things I make it usually doesn't matter that much, but if you fold a beanie up and the line is not straight that's quite noticeable (to me, anyway). do try. I think it makes a lot of sense for a hat. Though, I got a lot o hats with a an alternating longtail cast on and feel that can look nice as well after blocking

I'm following this pattern using a different wool and needles. The instructions are so great, I've adapted them. In case others want to know what I'm using... Medium (4) 80% acrylic, 20% wool blend and 5 mm circular needles. I cast on 102 stitches and in the decreasing rows I used 5 instead of 7 between the two stitch markers because my wool is bigger. Thanks again. I'll finish it just in time for Christmas.

I actually just knitted my first hat on circular needles with a very similar pattern called "Ribelation" by Anne Gagnon. I'm going to give your pattern a try next!
yeah, that looks very similar. Certainly give it a try. if you download the pattern there are a couple of other options included.
The how to calculate the number stitches to cast on is very helpful. Love the look of the tubular cast on. I would like to know more that, especially recommended uses. Also how to know when to start decreasing is good info, instead of a row count which rarely works for me. I use the Norwegian purl and it looks like it will make 2nd set up row faster. This looks like a great basic hat pattern for us beginner knitters. 🧶💕🧶.
if you have a look at the pattern, I go a bit more into detail when it comes to different kind of fits and when to start decreasing. At the end of day, I feel it's an error and trial process as tastes AND head forms differ a bit..so anything like "knit 30 rows or knit 20cm" is bound to not work out for most.

That's a Lamy pen. they are quite affordable (like 10-20ish euros here in Germany). Don't know if the golden ones are still available tho. this one is quite old.

Hey, just wanted to stop by and say thanks for such a great tutorial. This is my first bigger project after following your dishcloth video, and I've been slowly but surely making progress on my very first hat. It has taken me way more than a few hours, but I'm a handful of rows away from starting my decrease, and the hat is already looking fantastic.
The cast on was quite nerve-racking, because I was constantly struggling to avoid twisting the stitches. I only had to re-start a few times before I got it right, though 😂.
The true challenge to this project was for me to avoid making careless mistakes. I somehow managed to add a stitch and not notice until a couple inches of knitting later, when I thought I actually slipped a stitch and tried to add another one and just keep knitting. Eventually I realized my oopsie and decided to unravel below the mistake and try again (that was such a hard decision, lol).
I'm glad I did it, though, as I would never have been happy knowing there was a random little hole in my hat where I made the mistake, and I got to learn how to correctly add stitches back to my needles. I also got to have much neater results using DPNs with all of the extra practice (I transitioned to DPNs after an inch or two because my circular needles were just barely not long enough, so it was inconvenient and slow).
You'd think I'd have paid better attention after losing at least ten hours of work the first time, but sure enough I ended up messing up my ribbing pattern after a double knit and didn't notice for four rows somehow. But that was also a learning experience, because after the painstaking process of adding so many stitches back to a needle I learned how un-knit 1x1 rib stitch. It was slow at first, but after a row or two I was nearly as fast as slow knitting. So at least I have that in the tool belt 😂. Having to figure out and fix my mistakes has given me a better understanding of how the stitches work.
My most recent mistake was yet another double knit stitch, but since I caught it after the first row it was super easy to fix with a crochet hook.
I'm looking forward to screwing up the decrease and learning something else new 😂. But mostly looking forward to wearing my new hat.
I have definitely grown to like the DPNs more now, and thanks to your video on DPNs (and my overly-tight beginner knitting) I have no ladders :)

you might also want to look into ways to embroider knitting, like the duplicate stitch: nimble-needles.com/stitches/how-to-do-the-duplicate-stitch-in-knitting/
Maybe you can cover some up if it's a bit more noticeable? But just a thought! I'm sure these mistakes are actually barely noticeable for a non-knitter!

Thank you for making this video, as I see lots of hats on more heavy yarn and I strangle to know the size when I use DK instead of heaver weight. Your explanation on how to measure to get the proper size was super easy to understand. For me a light bulb went on and I was ohhh that is how is done.
just be careful when you transfer this pattern to super bulky yarn (say 10mm) Then the 7 stitches kept in the middle will probably be too much.

But I found the tubular cast on DIFFICULT. I attempted it seven times at least. The pearl bumps and stitches kept twisting all around my circular needle cord and because of this I struggled with recounting stitches and also knowing how to do my back stitches (from which side of the twisted stitch). I tried watching your video on the tubular stitch but found it hard to apply the concept when I had MANY more stitches to deal with than the little swatch you made as an example.
as I said in the video, you don't have to start with the tubular cast-on. I am personally not the biggest fan. An alternating long-tail cast-on can work just as well.
So informative! I always learn something from you, thank you! I would love to see a video on different cast on techniques and when they are used. The same for a video on different bind off techniques and when to use them. Just a suggestion. ❤️
