As an American who grew up overseas, it was sad to watch this guy's unease when watching this video, it reminded me of my relatives here a little. I now live in the US, but there are things I refuse to discuss with family members, and when I do and present an argument, let's say, for gun control, they squirm and refer to the immutability of a constitution that's been amended 27 times!?! I feel it necessary to tell you people working in healthcare do not get better healthcare insurance or anything compared to anyone else in the US. Also, no. There is no defending not giving parental(or at least maternity) leave to a full time waitress because she has a shitty job. I have no idea how you lack any and all sympathy for these people. There is no need to defend the fucked up stuff going on in your country.
Re the 2nd Amendment, if it's an amendment can it not be amended further lol love your reactions, bit triggered there. America is a fantastic place with mostly fantastic people as far as I can see. However we Europeans have managed to keep our lunatics in the margins (for now), you seem to have let them loose in the mainstream.
And you mentioned 'its the same as the tax that comes out in Europe". I cant speak on Europe but we in Australia also have a similar healthcare system which is paid for in taxes. It is taken out before you recieve your pay generally and it can vary in amount. Say someones wage is 65k a year, they will pay about 200-300 ish in taxes each week (or $11, 600 ish annually). Also at tax time if you dont have private health insurance, you pay a levy, again dependant on your income. Can be a few hundred again. If you earn under a threshold you can recieve all the tax you paid back. FOR paying all of that, we get unlimited healthcare for most things (not dental for adults etc). But it certainly pays itself even if someone has a child, considering it costs tens of thousands in america to do the same. You seek treatment if you need it, and dont have to avoid it because it will ruin your life financially. As well as many other benefits affored to those living in 'a socialist country'. haha It seems you guys still pay more than that just for health insurance.
"Its pretty clear in the constitution, the 2nd ammendment, the right to bear arms" Yes but ensure you are aware of the whole amendment...for it also mentions 'a well REGULATED militia'. So...theres that.
Yea, that’s what I was going to say. The 2nd amendment is not straightforward at all if you actually read the whole thing. Even the term “the right of the people” has been debated as who “the people” is referring to. Is it referring to the militia? All citizens? All people of the land in general? Bc by that wording you could make a case that not allowing felons the right to carry weapons is unconstitutional, but yet no one is upset about that…. 🤷🏽♀️
“it’s in the constitution” Yeh it also states they should be highly regulated which they are not, and The US are very strange to call EU countries old fashioned and behind the times when americans still sit and listen to the constitution written 200 years ago which was intended to be changed and adapted as the years went by but no one did, So to say having a gun is a right in 2022 because someone 200 years ago said so is honestly ridiculous
1) The phrase is "well regulated," actually. And it directly describes militias, not guns. In fact a lot of the quibbling that goes on is because of the specific wording of the 2nd amendment, since there have been different opinions on how it should be interpreted (i.e. does it grant the right to bear arms to citizens in general, or only in the context of militia groups). 2) It has to be changed through a valid process, instead of trying to shoehorn through laws that are unconstitutional. The first is a valid way of changing things, and the second completely undermines the rule of law. The word "tyranny" gets thrown around too lightly when some Americans try to defend gun rights, but sacrificing the internal validity of the legal system really would leave us vulnerable to it. 3) The constitution has been legitimately amended many times. Saying otherwise is inaccurate, and inaccurate scoffing is just obnoxious. 4) "Because someone 200 years ago said so" is the basis for many rights under our system of laws. Things like the right to free practice of religion, the right of journalists to report truthfully on events, protection against unreasonable searches, and protection against cruel and unusual punishments. Are those rights "ridiculous" too? Or are the only ones that can be dismissed by mere age the ones that you, personally, think are disposable? 5) Women in France are prohibited from wearing hijab, in the name of "religious freedom." Greece has been forcing boatloads of migrants back into the ocean. I sometimes have to wonder if Europeans focus so much on problems in the US as a way of distracting themselves from their own hideous warts, instead of trying to actually do something to fix them. (This is not to say that questioning the way the US does things is wrong, by any means. Question away. But be careful about spreading misinformation, and don't forget to question your own systems too.)
