The Z6 was my first jump into mirror-less cameras. Coming from a Nikon DSLR, wow, what a difference. I still us my Z6 for streaming and stills work. It is an amazing camera and well worth the investment even today! I did use the Z6 for birds in flight and was able to get many excellent images.
I enjoyed this video. A bit over a year ago I got a used Z6 to upgrade to full frame. I paid about 300 less than the current prices because it had a good sized scuff in the rubber grip. After noticing a internal mic issue near the end of the seller warranty, I asked if it would be covered. Wasn't even sure I'd send it in for it. They replied by sending me a shipping label and all. They sent it to Nikon for repair, who repaired it AND replaced the grip with a new one and new weather sealing gaskets. So, win win for me. Everything you said here I can agree with. I personally shoot for fun. Even the idea of shooting weddings for a job gives me nightmares. Its not a perfect camera, exactly for the reasons you mentioned. But for my use its fun and more than good enough. The autofocus is enough for me shooting portraits and landscapes ect. And with the ease of manual focus on mirrorless I use old lenses a lot too like the old 105 f2.5. A Z6 II would really be no benefit over it for me and would produce the exact same results for more money.
I love using my Z6's Most my videos are captured on my channel on the original Z6 (talking head) the Z6 is the best camera to get your feet wet in mirrorless without spending allot of money. Used deals on the Z6 1 are incredible. Great video ZWade.
Love my Z6. First and only digital camera I will ever need. Coming from shooting film for decades using a F8008s, N90s, F100 and F5 the Z6 was just fine for what I use it for. 24.5 megapixels is just fine. Don’t use auto focus lenses. I have an adapter to fit my old F glass. I typically use a 50 1.8 ai, 35 2.8 ai, 28 2.8 non ai and 135 3.5 ai. I have it set at manual mode and set the shutter speed accordingly. I use what I call automatic stop down and auto ISO control. I focus using the red colored outline on the subject. I wish film cameras had that focus technology.
Thanks for your video. I have the Z6 and for some reason the algorithm suggested your video. I agree with most of your sentiments. The best thing about the Z6 is the sensor. The Z6 sensor produces fantastic files.
The Sony a7rii was my first ful frame mirrorless camera, but i had always been a Nikon shooter. So when the Z6 came out, i jumped on it. Its not the best camera but with a little time you quickly learn how to work around its few shortcomings. I still use my Z6 occasionally as a backup and for studio work. The images that come from this camera is just as good as anything you can get today.
I am an avid amateur who just shoots whatever I want to. A year ago I stumbled onto a deal from a retired photographer who had a Z6 and all the fixings including the FTZ adapter. He had used as a backup and only had 70 clicks on it. I wound up buying it for $1,250 which a year ago I thought was a very good deal. Story short, I love the Z6 and think it's a great full frame starter camera for someone wanting to get into mirrorless.
Great video and excellent points. The Z6 has been my main camera, my second camera, and everything in between for both photo and video. It has its limitations, but I feel like most are not that big of a deal or can be countered (learning how the focus modes work and adjusting/external monitor for video etc). I came from a D750 and upgraded to a Z7. Soon after I bought a Z6 as a second body, but found that I was using it as a primary video shooter more often than not. Even after getting the Z9, I still found myself picking this camera up and being more than happy with the results. Autofocus might not be on par, but that hasn't stopped me from getting clients/paid. Sadly, selling the OG Z6 to pay for the taxes for the upcoming Z8:)
I may be planning to complement my Z6 with a Z8 shortly but that will not make the former any less of a key part of my arsenal. Z6 remains a fantastic piece of kit which will continue to be my go-to solution when high ISO performance and compactness are important, and most street photography
Bought it a month ago for under $900 from mpb. Love it. And like you said, it isn't my work camera and my entry to mirrorless to the Z system so I can build up glass and use for street and travel. Also used for personal projects. I don't do weddings and sports action so no issue for autofocus for what I shoot.
@ZWade Photo they rated it in excellent. When I received it, I would swear it was new. Zero scratches, nicks, etc. Shutter count barely 10k. Last firmware update was 3.0. Updated with the latest firmware, zero complaints for what I shoot.
@ZWade Photo thank you. I'm still in play mode. Me and a friend who works at the camera store did a shoot out between the 85 1.2 for both Canon and Nikon vs the Sigma 105 to see if it's worth the price to get the 85s or just do the 105s. The color tonality on the 85 just couldn't be matched by the Sigma. So I'm saving money to get the 85.

Excellent points, spot on. I absolutely love my Z6II, I’d only part with it for the likely-upcoming Z6III. I have a Z8 on order, so the Z6II will make for an ideal secondary body. Deciding on whether to keep the grip, or swap for the Z8 grip (no need for 2 grip’d bodies). Thanks Z!
This is my 3rd year with the z6. I still love it. The files are soo great. Very good low light performance perfect for nightscape images. I almost always use the single point af with back button. Focus recompose boom. Barely had a missed shot, but i can understand that for sport photographers it's not the best af performance. Can't wait to see what the z6lll will be like, but maybe I'll just keep the z6 and buy lenses instead!
I watched this video because it appeared in my feed and you are fun to watch. Plus i would like a z6 innthe future. Say a year from now. I have the d7500 and 3 lenses. One full frame and i like to hear what people say about different cameras. I want to make sure i am making the best decision.
Well welcome to the channel Carols! I’m glad to hear the UA-cam algo is getting my small channel out people! I hope my content can help! See you around the Tube 🤘
I literally just subscribed to your channel because you described my shooting style to a T; hates shooting sports or wildlife, would never shoot weddings again and usually only shoots in single point AF. I'm looking at the Z6 specifically as a walk around camera for photos and videos on vacation. My cameras for paid gigs are a D810 and a D700. I'm a fashion photographer, I don't do video for work. I do find myself hating carrying around my big heavy DSLRs when I'm just out and about but I like to take video of my kids so I use a GoPro... Long story short, here I am. I figured a used OG Z6 would be a good walk around and vacation camera and double as a backup to my D810 so I can finally retire my D700. Thanks for the info.
I'll probably keep my Z 6II forever since I love the files from it, especially in low light. However with the recent advancements in software, the advantage is negligible if you're willing to add an extra step to your workflow. I've been seeing used Z 7's on FM for under $1000, talk about an amazing bargain for landscape, street, portrait, product photography, astro... you know the majority of use cases in photography.
I just got a z6ii for $900 that was in mint condition and want to take pictures as a hobby and family photos. I was so close to buying a z6, but i think it has a cost that has flattened out to $750 or $800 for near mint condition
I bought a Z6 about 4/5 months ago and so far I can't say that I have much complaints about the camera. It's fine for all my event work, it does video excellently (especially in regards to autofocus), and I know that if I ever need a top tier quality video camera... I can simply slap a recorder on there and record 10bit 4.2.2 footage without having to buy a new camera. That's something I don use yet, but that I'm definitely grateful for (something that a few of my friends rockin a Sony A7III would have liked... they all needed to go to an A7IV when they needed 10 bit !) Otherwise, coming from a Fujifilm X-T2, I gotta say that the autofocus never let me down, even shooting stuff like wildlife and sports events. If you don't rely on subject detection too much, the camera is actually the best AF system I've used to date (with my previous two systems being the X-T2/H1 and the Nikon D700. Yeah, oldies I know). I have absolutely zero issues bringing the Z6 to a pro gig, and it didn't cost me more than my car. Overall just positives ! Few nitpicks here and there, but it was a much better compromise than paying more to get less like a Sony A7III or Canon EOS R. Also when it comes to the sensor performance, well even the Zf uses the same sensor, you wouldn't get any advantage when it comes to image quality by going for a newer sensor, which in my opinion makes the Z6 an even better value.
Yes I'm thinking of buying it. I have a D7500 and lots of lenses. I'm doing some projects, like shoots for a yoga studio and for a motortouring company. I hesistate because of the price for lenses. I need an allround lens for travelling anyway and 50mm f1.8 for real nice headshots. I want a more sensitive sensor because I like ambiance light. And it needs to be compact and sturdy because I take it on my motortrips
@@nolanryan2003 sure. But if you’re buying a Z6, and the individual above doesn’t have a 50mm 1.8, might as well make that their first Z lens. It’s what I recommend as anyone’s FIRST mirrorless lens. If they already had a 50 1.8 I’d say worry about lenses later
Another huge plus of Z6 sensor is its high ISO performance, it is nearly a stop better than Z5 and much better than Canon R and RP , which are regular CMOS sensors
Although I do have a question. I have a sony rx100iii and shoot with it quite often. More often than the d7500. Thst is why i do not whether to sell everything and get a z30 o or a z30 and a z6. I like the pocketabilkty and i don't see anyone with a 6 in a a pocket. I was interested in the a6000 series but i hate sony's color. They are really hard to work with. The d7500's colors are beautiful. 😊
If you like Nikon colors and usability, stick with it because Nikon has never lost their focus on great color. From DSLR to Mirrorless, beginner to pro, crop sensor to full frame, I feel like you can always rely on great files with Nikon
I'm looking at a z6 because I'm trying to get a good deal on a mirrorless camera with a good viewfinder to use with my nice set of vintage Minolta lenses. I shoot video too but I'm mostly interested in good photos. I recently tried a zfc at a local camera shop and was impressed by the colors.
The Zfc does have a good sensor. The z6, btw, great build, and for whatever reason, when files are rendered black and white, it has some extra sweetness. Idk why, but many Nikon user agree that the Z6 sensor is just better than the 6ii
Right on Meraki! I’m ready for a version 3 that will enough of an upgrade for both Z6 and Z6ii owners to raise an eyebrow. If Nikon Kills it with a Z6iii that will be a VERY good seller
@@ZWadePhoto me too!! I am really wondering if Nikon is trying to make the stacked sensor and non mechanical shutters across the board. Because that would be amazing and ahead the competition.
I have a D500 that I use almost exclusively for sports. I have yet to hear a plausible argument for any other camera being better for that purpose. I use the Z6 for everything else. It's hands down the most intuitive camera I've ever used since my Canon AE-1 almost 40 years ago. But like this guy says, it does help if you know what you're doing and what you're using it for. In the end, though, I think the Z8 will replace I later on this year.
I have no use for the Z6, but man! With the prices I am seeing in almost brand new condition with box, inserts, cables, and all accessories under $1,000, I am just tempted to try it for the sake of the sensor. Interestingly enough, I hate the way the camera handles. My purlicue just gets destroyed because of the tension it causes on my thumb. Another thing is that it has a battery grip that has no shutter release button! Why Nikon thought this was a good idea is beyond me! I saw an offer recently on one in immaculate condition with the 24-70 F4 S, box, accessories, and even a memory card for $1,200! Crazy deal!
Z6 is still a decent camera. I was looking for a Z 35mm 1.8 S lens only and came across a Z6 and 35mm 1.8 combo for a decent price, offered $900 and they took it. Considering how expensive that lens is solo, I now how a backup camera for very cheap.
I bought the Z6 when it came out as a lighter alternative to my D850 for general photography and it’s been great. The picture quality is fantastic. However my passion is wildlife and birds in particular and the Z6 is just not good enough for small fast moving subjects. When it nails a shot the results are perfect but it misses more often than it hits. So for now I’m sticking to my D500 for my nature photography and waiting for Nikon to bring out a Z500
Right on. I don't do much wildlife. I'm not sure about the time frame in which we could see a Z500, but if you're happy with what you have for now, no worries about the wait. If you get tired of waiting, Z8/9 are about the only game in town to pull that off "easily" in the Nikon ecosystem anyway
I am currently using a sony apsc (alpha a37) for my family photos, and would like to upgrade to either fuji xs10/20, nikon z6 or Panasonic s5. Since i shoot indoor also i think about z6. I am in confusion, please guide. No pro. works. I kept fuji, because of the form factor.
Nice video thanks! What's your experience/thoughts on the Z6 AF keeping up with fast moving erratic subjects like kids & dogs? Can it keep up with the action or is it not very good, even in 2024 after all the firmware updates? Many thanks!
I have not used any of the recent firmware as I have not had this camera in some time. But in It’s early existence I would consider it sub par. Even the Z6ii had struggles imo
I want to change from the Fuji system to full frame and I’m looking around having the Z6 ii on the radar. I don’t need crazy resolutions, 24mpx is pretty fine for me, but I will appreciate more color depth and a higher dynamic range as well as a better over all low light performance, since do shoot in poor light a lot. And there is a sentimental reason: I like Nikon. I still own my trusty FM2 I got as a birthday present back in the early 80’s.
I'm looking at the Z6 because of the high frame rate. I don't need focus tracking, the thing that I'm shooting at high speed is staying at a constant distance from the camera so focus tracking is not required. I'm doing hobby photography so one card slot is OK with me.
I came here looking at recent reviews of the Nikon Z6 as a budget hybrid shooter alternative to the Fujifilm X-T4, especially considering how hyperinflated used prices are currently.
Searched this topic because I'm looking to step up from the Z30. I'm planning to get a Z6ii or iii next year but I have the opportunity to purchase a Z6 now for a great price. Next year seems too far 😅
@@shadowmaster41 if you don’t need the crazy subject tracking, I’m happy to say that the Z6 sensor is pretty awesome. So is the Z5 sensor. You should watch some of my Z5 videos
@@ZWadePhoto appreciate it. I've been considering the Z5 as well, full frame, dual cards it's not back side illuminated but I was willing to make that compromise but I feel like it's priced too close to the Z6 which is supposed to be superior based on what I've gathered
Recently got my own Nikon Z6 and with its latest firmware update is great for wrestling photography. Though the use of an XQD/CFEXPRESS TYPE B card can definitely be a deal breaker.
Many people will say yes, but side by side the Z6 to me seems a little sweeter for some reason. The performance on the Z6ii would be better, so maybe it’s not worth the difference. If you’re a shingle shot photographer, the Z6 sub $1000 is an absolute steal
Hahaha!! sorryy, my bad! So, you say you high recommend the Z5. It is comparable Z5 with Z6? I ask because the Z5 is presented like "entry level in full-frame", and Z6/Z6 II as for higher quality, more for experimented shooters. The results of 2 sensors are similar? As I know the Z6/Z6II has BSI sensor, and Z5 not
Looking to upgrade from d7100. Found a 2nd hand z6 with 51k actuations. Would it still be worth it to buy? Will use it mostly for photography with active kids, and landscapes.
@@GnarutaM the Z6 has a great looking sensor. But you may find it doesn’t meet the industry expectation in terms of autofocus compared to other mirrorless brand cameras in that price range.
what would you say are the key benefits of the Z6 ii that the mark i doesnt have? Is it worth to consider if im doing bird photography and group pictures?
For birds, it probably won’t impress you. Z6iii, Z8, Z9, are what I’d recommend. And honestly I think biggest difference between Z6 and Z6ii, is the insurance of a second card slot. In terms of speed they are negligible and as far as focus performances they are both fine but don’t reach consumer expectations of mirrorless cameras compared to other brands. ZF, Z6iii, Z8 and Z9 do are what people “expect” out of Mirrorless technology
Perhaps Nikon was able to shrink enough stuff in the time between the Z6 and Z6II to fit the second card slot and processor? It's easy to say, "They could have done it" without being in the design meetings. The F4 with the MB-23 looks more like subsequent vertical grips. But sure, hate on the epic F4! 🤣🤣🤣
@@ZWadePhoto No sneeze is going to move the F4! Use the MB-23 instead, avoid the slant. If the F4 does tip over, it simply shakes off the dust and stands up again. No harm, no foul.
Love my Z6 and the firmware updates really improved AF. I think the one in October really helped out tracking mode as it seemed a little wonky prior to it. I found that getting things done is a lot easier on Z6 vs. D7100 when it comes to AF. The sensor is amazing and video quality is quite awesome for being 8bit. Sucks that 120fps is limited to 1080 but that 1080 is pretty fantastic!
I have a D7100 and many gopros for video. I am considering a Z6 for hybrid use (photo and video). D7100 rubbish in video, but will the Z6 be a good choice mainly landscape and trip video? Thanks.
@@lelezoli Yes, I've traveled with my Z6 extensively and it has been great. I also shoot hybrid when traveling (walking/hiking) and it's amazingly easy to go back and forth. Video quality is also fantastic. The 1080/120 is a very nice oversampled image. The II will get you more AF features in video and lil better AF performance overall.
It always tickle my pickle when people complain about af. People love their af porn I've shot very fast moving subjects with no issues I don't really understand what the complaints are it kinda baffles maybe my technique is better maybe I bought the 26ii after firmware was updated a few times and improved but man some ones face could be so small in the frame and it locks to the eyes no problem and doesn't really get confused in the odd chance it did I just use manual focus override and pull the focus where I want and it's locks back on instantly easy peasy if I missed a shot it was always because I wasn't ready not the camera
People have a little bit of point when they complain about AF as it relates to the competition. If your ecosystem is underperforming, to a big enough degree, versus the competition in a given price range can be frustrating.

That’s an absurdly good price for a 6ii
I bought a Z6 about 4/5 months ago and so far I can't say that I have much complaints about the camera.
It's fine for all my event work, it does video excellently (especially in regards to autofocus), and I know that if I ever need a top tier quality video camera... I can simply slap a recorder on there and record 10bit 4.2.2 footage without having to buy a new camera. That's something I don use yet, but that I'm definitely grateful for (something that a few of my friends rockin a Sony A7III would have liked... they all needed to go to an A7IV when they needed 10 bit !)
Otherwise, coming from a Fujifilm X-T2, I gotta say that the autofocus never let me down, even shooting stuff like wildlife and sports events.
My favorite thing about it really the sensor. It just really excellent in what it renders. I'm glad you're enjoying it. Thanks for watching!
The 50 f1.8 Z used is an EXCELLENT value.
@@ZWadePhoto you can use a FTZ adapter
@@nolanryan2003 sure. But if you’re buying a Z6, and the individual above doesn’t have a 50mm 1.8, might as well make that their first Z lens. It’s what I recommend as anyone’s FIRST mirrorless lens.
If they already had a 50 1.8 I’d say worry about lenses later
Another huge plus of Z6 sensor is its high ISO performance, it is nearly a stop better than Z5 and much better than Canon R and RP , which are regular CMOS sensors
I didn’t know that it was clocked at a stop better than the R and RP, but, there you go!
What are your thoughts on the Nikon Z8? It sounds like a pretty darn fine camera. Are you going to buy one? Thanks
I’ve got a video coming up soon 🤘🤘🤘 I internationally stayed silent on it throughout this whole long rumor cycle leading up to its announcement haha.
Great video! I currently still use a z6. I definitely will upgrade This year though!!!!
Crazy deal!
Hey hey Yamen! Yea the battery grip was such a stupid a$$ move lol
Z6 is still a decent camera. I was looking for a Z 35mm 1.8 S lens only and came across a Z6 and 35mm 1.8 combo for a decent price, offered $900 and they took it. Considering how expensive that lens is solo, I now how a backup camera for very cheap.
Yoooo that is a heck of a deal 🤙🤙🤙🤙
If you get tired of waiting, Z8/9 are about the only game in town to pull that off "easily"
in the Nikon ecosystem anyway
I still have my Z6 as a second body to my Z9.... when it comes to events , my Z6 is a work horse 🙂
Nice buddy! Thanks for watching
I haven’t used any of those except the Z6. I would try and rent before you buy. I can tell you for sure that Nikon Lenses are Reeeeaaaaaly good
@@ZWadePhoto thanks
I got an FM2 myself! I tell you what, I think you’ll like the Nikon files. They’re awesome !
Now a Zf is your best buy
@@bobamarmstrongis it though?
I'm looking at the Z6 because of the high frame rate. I don't need focus tracking, the thing that I'm shooting at high speed is staying at a constant distance from the camera so focus tracking is not required. I'm doing hobby photography so one card slot is OK with me.
You will love the sensor on that thing. And the value in used excellent condition.
I came here looking at recent reviews of the Nikon Z6 as a budget hybrid shooter alternative to the Fujifilm X-T4, especially considering how hyperinflated used prices are currently.
I've seen used "on sale" prices just sub $1000 at points this year which is absolute stupid value.
Right on my friend. Enjoy the he z6!
Does the Z6 have a better sensor or same sensor as the Z6ii?
Many people will say yes, but side by side the Z6 to me seems a little sweeter for some reason. The performance on the Z6ii would be better, so maybe it’s not worth the difference. If you’re a shingle shot photographer, the Z6 sub $1000 is an absolute steal
Great video! However, at 06:18 you mentioned Nikon Z5 II (!!!). I don't know to exist a Nikon Z5 Mark2 😄
Z5 too, not Z5ii. ! Lol Z5 too as in Z5 “as well”
Hahaha!! sorryy, my bad! So, you say you high recommend the Z5. It is comparable Z5 with Z6? I ask because the Z5 is presented like "entry level in full-frame", and Z6/Z6 II as for higher quality, more for experimented shooters. The results of 2 sensors are similar? As I know the Z6/Z6II has BSI sensor, and Z5 not
Wow Zwade nice studio!!! I love my Z6
Thanks John! Where you been? I’ve made tons of videos in here lmfao. 🤘🤘🤘
@@ZWadePhoto I was in Hong Kong visiting my mother in law. I never forget you my friend! Your killing it Zwade !
@@Photojouralist123 right on dude. Get ALL the photos up of your trip
I am looking for a backup camera and a low light shooter. Have you noticed any increased improvement with the AF on the new firmware?
I haven’t had the Z6 for quite sometime now my friend. Single point AF can work in almost black though. Which I could conduct live years for you 😕
Perhaps Nikon was able to shrink enough stuff in the time between the Z6 and Z6II to fit the second card slot and processor? It's easy to say, "They could have done it" without being in the design meetings.
The F4 with the MB-23 looks more like subsequent vertical grips. But sure, hate on the epic F4! 🤣🤣🤣
The F4 is amazing. But the slant on the grip is so silly looking. Like it’ll tip over if you sneeze. Haha
@@ZWadePhoto No sneeze is going to move the F4! Use the MB-23 instead, avoid the slant.
If the F4 does tip over, it simply shakes off the dust and stands up again. No harm, no foul.
@@UnconventionalReasoning I don’t have a F4, what’s the name of the slanty one? In case someone comes in and is looking for it
@@ZWadePhoto The MB-21 is the slanty one. The F4 looks very normal (today) without any grip.
I will be updating to a Z8 so my Z6 will be up on sale soon
Right on brother 🤘🤘
Z6 with F Mount on 85mm prime is a god.
I love the Z6 sensor. Just a litta extra sweet! Looks excellent when rendered B&W
I haven’t shot one since 2020, but Ive heard a lot of Z6ii users who own a Z6 mention how much better the AF is now. 🤘🤘🤘
People complained about one card slot but ignored the reality that XQD is way more robust, practically fail proof, over SD cards.
I never once had me fail. 🤷♂️
In my country the price of nikon cameras if way high than the priceo of Sony cameras.
That’s so crazy that price ratios are so different in another country
If your ecosystem is underperforming, to a big enough degree, versus the competition in a given price range can be frustrating.
z6 till i die or z6 dies on me
I love that sensor! Thanks for watching Avinash! Hope to see you more around the channel!
Love the images from the Z6.
For video I usually grab the Z6 over my Z9.
But whats wrong with the F4 - It set the layout for most modern cameras ...🦘
Only that particular extended grip haha. It’s silly. Great camera.
