In this episode of Legends of Nikon we pay our respect to the Prince of Bokeh, the Nikon 105mm f/2 DC
The Nikon 105mm f/2D DC (Defocus Control) is a unique and iconic portrait lens, renowned for its ability to produce beautifully soft, defocused backgrounds and stunning subject isolation. Featuring a bright f/2 aperture, this lens delivers incredible sharpness and creamy bokeh, making it a favorite among portrait, wedding, and fine art photographers.
What sets this lens apart is Nikon's innovative Defocus Control (DC) system, which allows photographers to adjust the degree of spherical aberration in either the foreground or background. This feature provides creative control over the quality and style of the bokeh, offering a dreamy, artistic aesthetic that elevates portraits to a new level.
Designed for Nikon F-mount DSLRs, the 105mm f/2D DC delivers flattering compression and a natural perspective, perfect for headshots and medium portraits. Its advanced optical design ensures sharp, vibrant images with minimal distortion and chromatic aberration. The lens's sturdy, professional-grade construction ensures reliability for demanding shooting environments.
Compact and lightweight, the lens is easy to handle, making it an excellent choice for on-location shoots. The manual aperture ring and smooth focusing mechanism offer precise control for photographers who value hands-on creativity.
The Nikon 105mm f/2D DC is a timeless lens that blends exceptional optics with innovative design, providing unmatched versatility and artistic expression. Whether you're capturing classic portraits or experimenting with creative effects, this lens delivers stunning results that stand out in any portfolio.

    Unfortunately it is in my experience not really usable with autofocus with dc control settings other than zero, because the dc control causes a lot of focus shift on dslrs and as an effect the focus is incorrect. You might not see that on analog cameras, but on digital cameras with more than 12mp it's clearly visible. And for mirrorless cameras (that do not have issue with focus shift) there's (to my knowledge) currently no Nikon adapter that supports af-d lenses.

    I bought one for myself as a Christmas present just a few weeks ago as it was cheap on ebay. Looked like it had taken a few knocks but is optically fine. I haven't had a chance to play with it but I have this crazy idea to shoot some video with it on my D780.

    These lenses, the AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D; AF DC Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D; AF DC Nikkor 135mm f/2.0D are so good. I used everyone of them. I wish someone would make an adapter for the autofocus. This is one reason to hold onto the D850 or the F5. I still have a passion for the F2a when I started shooting. Worked in a custom B&W Lab mostly when I was young. With Durst 8x10, Leica 35mm, and Omega 4x5 enlargers. Had a 20x24" process camera for orthochromatic film to make masks. This was before photoshop.

    Hmmm, after ranking the 85mmf1.2, 135mm f1.8, 50mm f1.2 as 1st, 2nd, & 3rd respectively (wished Nikon had a 35mm f1.2 instead of the 50) I would've prioritize versatility with the 24-70 & 70-200 f2.8. But I am glad for this listing, I can also interpret it to showcase the lenses wasted their time making. You determine from what place in this line up I'm referring to.

    • @ZWadePhoto

      I always prioritize in optical performance, which is easy because I’m inherently a prime guy so I’m lucky with my preferences haha. Also, the 35mm 1.2 is still supposed to happen. Unless Nikon is trying to sweep that under the rug. lol it WAS a roadmap item

  • @jpdj2715
    @jpdj2715 19 годин тому

    I probably have said it before, but the Z 7ii in DX mode would be a replacement as it's about the D500 size (smaller without lens). I feel Nikon could have made the DX firmware run much faster than the FX firmware as there are much less MP. It seems like the is not much benefit in speed from going DX in an FX camera. If you want D500 sharpness from your lenses, then you need to go above 36MP FX format in the case of Nikon as this Eliminates the OLPF from the sensor (this idea started in 2012 with the launch of the D800E FX format camera). No OLPF opens potentially up to less good deBayerisation, resulting in residual noise, and that's not a camera/sensor thing but bad raw processing. In recent years, fixes got offered by 3rd party raw processing apps. Nikon may still need to improve their NX Studio. This explains why a D500 is about as sharp as a Z 6ii.

    • @ZWadePhoto
      @ZWadePhoto 10 годин тому

      The Z7ii is quite a bit smaller than the D500, but the Z8 feels more DSLR than any other non Z9 lens. Same MP, albeit more expensive

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 6 годин тому

      @@ZWadePhoto - Z 8 has become totally my thing. The sensor in the Z 8 is very different, though. It runs at a very high frame rate and has a very fast readout of its memory cells.No, D500 is not a lot larger than Z 7(ii), it's in the few mm order. But the mirror house makes it look larger, true.

    Thank You, ZWade, for your appreciation of my DC-Nikkor photos on Flickr! Sadly, I sold the DC-Nikkor a few years ago when I invested in the Nikon Z6. I was afraid that F-mount lenses with screw-drive AF would lose a lot in value, seeing as the FTZ adapter didn't support screw-drive AF. I sold that lens and many others. Would love to see you review the actual lens. If you don’t have access to the lens I would gladly send you my copy to review. I would see it as contributing to your channel which I love ! Another lens and it’s kind of a niche lens is the ais 105 F1.8. The 2.5 gets all of the applause and rightfully so but man I have the F1.8 version and the black and whites times are astonishing at least to my eye. Its worth pointing out the D850 was released in 2017. The Z8 in 2023. If we take the same time line and compare older nikons, its not uncommon to see notable technological leaps in that time. But there is the additional factor, in that the last mirrored camera Nikon released? was the D6, in 2020. There has been no investment or production of new mirrored cameras for 4 years, and if we are honest? 7 years+ In a more interesting world we may have seen these technologies being carried over into the mirrored counterparts where suitable. But theres no intention as a manufacturer to do so. Now that most of the early adoption bugs seem to have been zapped, the systems matured as well as parts to go with it? I switched over this month. Hate some aspects, love others. Still getting to grips with the scope of use in my hands. But, if not acting as a professional needing to progress? The entire eco system, price and accessability in second hand markets will be great for people just doing stills.

    The problem is that Nikon hates DSLR users. In all those years, why is there hardly a firmware update for both d850 and d780 while Nikon is still selling both cameras at a significant price? They could for instance have improved face and eye detection when using the screen, such as include dog and cat faces, but they refuse so they can make money from the cameras when people want a DSLR, while earn heavily when people go for the z system and buy all the new gear. Mirrorless is the way forward, as DSLR will disappear, and the hit rate for sharp pictures and better videos is larger. But Nikon should have shown respect for all its customers. If I go mirrorless, I may leave Nikon for that reason: it is only about the money, not for the respect for people who want to use their equipment. But, I'm only an amateur, so Nikon will certainly not mind as many more will buy the Z50 II.

    • @ZWadePhoto
      @ZWadePhoto 3 дні тому

      @@pleclere that’s dramatic. The D850 is very unique in that it never really needed an update for bugs. Meaning they nailed it. What features do you want added to the D850 because they aren’t nearly as expandable as mirrorless via firmware.

    • @pleclere
      @pleclere 2 дні тому

      @ZWadePhoto as I mentioned, the face and eye detection could have been improved (at least dog and cat recognition) so it would be better for video. I understand DSLR will never be at the same level of mirrorless, but at least certain improvements could have happened as done with other cameras. It is not only about fixing bugs, or the Nikon z9, and other z system cameras would have been a disaster during their release, while they still receive updates to get even better.

    Are you able to do the other f mount Nikon primes (1.4 and 1.8) and rank them? From what I heard most of the 1.8 are amazing (20 & 85 are notable) whereas the 1.4 are a bit hit or miss. I’ve heard the 24, 35 f/1.4 aren’t the best while the 105, 85, 28, 58 are good.

    • @ZWadePhoto
      @ZWadePhoto День тому

      I’m not able to easily compare them. The 35 f/1.4 G is actually rad. It kicks ass. But generally: In the F mount days 1.4 was an expensive upgrade and often would result f/1.4 being really not that good, perhaps “artistic”. This started to change a little in the G days with the lenses you mention, including the 35. In Z mount, the 35 and 50 are inferior optically to the 1.8, by design. The Z 1.2 are even finer than G mount 1.8s and 1.4s wide open

    It all depends on what you wanna do. For me, photography is capturing a moment not video recording. At least so far there is no camera yet satisfying me with the fun of DSLR use. I still cannot find a better DSLR than the D810A for astronomy with my Russian MTO 1100mm f10.5. Of course, D850 is the king for portraits and D500 for landscapes. The noise of the mechanical shutter of DSLR is like the noise of V12 compared with the electric car when you listen to Z9. For me, photography is a hobby that involves relaxation and fun. I tried mirrorless but couldn't enjoy it. Nevertheless, I've got almost 90 lenses from 52mm f1.2 nocte made in 1977 when I was born and given to me by my father when I became 40, to 600mm f4. I cannot change the whole gear just for the marginal benefit of new lenses in the Z series. As you know sharpness is not everything. Older F mounts with fewer elements had less light distortion and color saturation was much better. I compared my Nikkor 52mm f1.2 nocte with Z series 52mm f0.9 and the size of the lens and its price cannot justify its sharpness over the function of my oldie. Of course just my opinion.

    Mmm…I have had the 3500, and the 5600. As far as picture quality, they’re the same. The 5600 has far more creature comforts. It also allows you to access settings far faster. And if you put your right eye to the OVF, instead of your left, the right side of the touch screen can be used like a second programmable dial, swiping left and right, to soft in as small as 1/3 stops. I use it for ISO adjustment. I use my fn button, for focus points. The proximity sensor cuts off the screen when putting your eye to the camera, keeping you from touching the screen with your nose, etc, and adjusting settings. It’s a great travel DSLR.

    True - valid, relevant. Shooting Z 8, myself, I still think the D850 is great indeed. Absolutely fabulous. Lens selection for the D includes the screwdriver Nikon F-mount AF lenses, but it can never mount Z lenses properly. The other way around, I can use about all G and E F-mount lenses on the Z with the FTZ. It's really a pity that Nikon never made a screwdriver version of the FTZ. That said, yes, the Z 8 increases the hit rate and it puts a smile on my face. If you do landscape, architecture, product, a pre-owned Z 7ii would be fabulous too. An overlooked feature of the IBIS in the Z 8/9 is that the sensor has a lot more rows/columns outside the effective image area. A few additional rows got introduced into the Bayer cameras as a way to no longer need a separate edge-deBayerisation algorithm. Adding a lot more, Nikon enabled to move the image crop around the sensor and i that way stabilize in the sensor plane in software. This then happens in the processing pipeline to the memory card and that adds no IBIS latency.

    I have both and still use both for Aurora Photography. The D850 does not change the focus when the lens is on manual focus when you turn the camera off like the Z8 does. The Z8 lasts longer at low temperatures than the D850, only if you turn the monitor off, but I need it on to monitor the camera. The D850 will tell you when it is going to fail at low temperatures, but the Z8 hasn't failed yet. I tested the Z8 and the Z6 II at -43C taking photos every 20 seconds for 1.5 hours and both worked flawlessly, the D850 would have failed after about 30 to 40 minutes. It has to do with the lubricants in the shutter. I still have a lot of F mount glass for Aurora so I am keeping my D850 and my D810A. I use 2 to 4 cameras when shooting the Aurora and I like to have spares.
